Article 40 of the newly amended Traffic Law states that throwing rubbish or anything from a vehicle in non-designated areas is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 days or a fine of up to OMR300. An official at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) said, “The new Traffic Law will help fight bad habits, such as throwing trash on roads.” “However, the fines should be slapped depending on the trash thrown, location and violation,” added the official. The official added that people should know by now that littering is wrong and welcomed the new penalty. “This is an extremely civilised law. This makes it mandatory for people not to litter, which should be considered a civilised act (not

to litter),” said a Royal Oman Police official. He compared the law to Japan, where people who litter face severe consequences if caught. The Environmental Society of Oman (ESO) said it will aid the authorities in keeping Oman clean, which in turn would lead to a healthier environment. “It’s important for Omanis and residents to ensure that they keep their surrounding environment clean, and take responsibility for

the waste that they generate,” said Suaad Al Harthy, ESO’s programme director. When asked whether the penalty is harsh for a simple act, such as littering, she replied, “It is for the government to decide what the correct amount for a penalty is, but I do believe that people need to take ownership and responsibility of their surrounding environment and of being fined for littering, which would push people to think about what they throw away.”>A6

tation of women workers leaving for employment to Gulf countries. “Therefore, a decision has been taken to make recruitment of female workers for ECR countries mandatorily through government agencies,” the minister said. According to the minister, Indian Missions and Posts abroad are regularly in contact with the host government concerning welfare and protection of Indian emigrants including women workers.

“Multi-lingual helplines and emergency contact numbers are also operational in India and in Gulf countries to assist Indian emigrant workers in distress and in emergency situations,” the minister added. India’s Emigration Act, 1983, provides that no citizen of India shall migrate unless he obtains emigration clearance from Protector of Emigrants and currently 17 countries, including all GCC countries, have been categorized as Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries. Indra Mani Pandey, the Indian ambassador to Oman, confirming the decision, said that all Indian women seeking jobs in ECR countries have to migrate through government agencies. “We have shared the list of agencies with the government of Oman. We will work together with the Oman government for smooth implementation of the decision,” the Indian ambassador said.>A6

BARKA INCIDENT

Strict action against accused for selling rotten rice: PACP Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Those responsible for trading in rotten rice in Barka will be deported for life, two years in jail and fines of more than OMR80,000, the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) said in a tweet on its official Twitter account. The primary court in Barka had confiscated the items to destroy them later at the expense of the defendants. The court ordered the shop where the crime was committed to be closed and the storage to be shut for three months. Out of the six people arrested, the court declared the fourth defendant innocent of the charges filed against him. Five others, however, have been convicted for trading rotten foodstuff and other offences. On May 10, the Times of Oman had reported that the consumer

protection authority in Barka raided a major company for supplying rotten rice. According to the PACP, 22 tonnes of rotten rice were seized. Following the raid, social media was abuzz with pictures of the rotten rice and a group responsible for selling it being named. However, on May 12, the traders posted a notice on their official Twitter handle, stating that they had never sold rice of this (rotten) quality, nor would they do so in the future. No information was available about the identity of the accused caught by the PACP.
