reji@timesofoman.com/ fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Despite repeated warnings to public to remain cautious during rains and flash floods, police rescue teams had to attend to 31 drowning cases, including 19 in Muscat alone and 12 in northern parts of Oman, following two hours of rain on Friday. Police are still looking for two people who were swept away by flash floods triggered by rain, which has so far claimed five lives. Three members of one family, their housemaid in Rustaq and a youngster in Muttrah were swept away in the flash flood. Their bodies were recovered later.

However, police are continuing their search for a man missing from Ibri and another man missing from Wattayah. Following the Friday rains, police had to rescue an Omani bus driver and a Pakistani truck driver who were trapped in their vehicles in a wadi in Muttrah. The police also had to rescue four nationals from an overflowing wadi in Muttrah. In Bausher, an Asian man who was trapped in his vehicle in a wadi managed to escape on his own, while five other Asians and three nationals were rescued by Major Ahmed Al Shajbi. In Amerat, three nationals trapped in a wadi were saved by the police. Another Omani was trapped in

wadi Al Sahtan in Rustaq and was saved by the police. In Sohar, four people were rescued after being trapped in a wadi in their vehicle. A national drowned in Wadi Al Jahawir in Suwaiq and was rescued by the police. Risking lives “People who are venturing into flood waters are not only risking their lives but also the lives of others. People, who do this deliberately, should be penalised strictly,” said Salim Al Ghammari, a Muscat Municipality Council member. In June, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) had warned the public that those found crossing the wadis during floods would face strict legal action. According to the police, most of the deaths and injuries recorded during adverse weather conditions were a result of people trying to cross wadis. Meanwhile, Mark Pudwell, business development and training manager of Competence HR, said the most important aspect of safety during stormy weather was to obey all instructions from the ROP and Civil Defence. >A6

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Following the death of a four-year-old girl child from suffocation after being left unattended in a bus in Bid Bid, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has come up with an online campaign to ensure the safety of children. “Bus drivers should make sure that all the children have disembarked from the bus before they lock and leave the vehicle,” the ROP tweeted on its official Twitter handle. This is the second such incident. Last year, two children died in similar incidents. Extra care “Transporting children is a job which needs extra care. The children always need some help, and only few of them can handle the situation alone. So, we should be more careful and alert,” N S Rajeev, a transporter working for the last 30 years in Muscat, said. According to Rajeev, an assistant is a must in school buses. “However, the ministry does not provide visas for this, leaving us in a dilemma. Think about a situation where the driver stops at every point and himself helps children to get down. If we have an assistant in the bus, he can

Parents concerned about the safety of their children said it’s the responsibility of the transporters to ensure that children are dropped home safely take care of each and every child. So, we plead with the ministry to provide visas to recruit assistants for school buses,” Rajeev said. Meanwhile, a group of parents concerned about the safety of children while being transported to school and back home said that with or without assistant, it’s the responsibility of the transporter to ensure that children stay safe.

“Last year, a child in an Indian school had to face a similar situation. The kindergarten girl child was reportedly left unattended in the school bus for nearly three hours. The bus didn’t have any assistant. “It was a parent who came to pay fees at around 10am when he saw the child banging on the bus windows and rescued the child,” the parents said. “This child was lucky that she was rescued. However, we cannot take the issue of safety of children lightly,” the parents added. Replacement of buses Recently, the Ministry of Finance has allotted OMR9.8 million to the Ministry of Education to replace the mid-sized 25 to 35-seater old model school buses by new-model school buses. The move comes in the light of the recommendations made by a committee formed vide a ministerial decision to address the issue of school transport. The committee came up with three proposals including replacing old buses, the financial cost of renting new-model buses equipped with safety features such as the front and rear sensors, extinguishers, first-aid kits, cameras, etc. TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES
