GAUTAM VISWANATHAN,
gautam@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman has been ranked 9th in terms of safety and security by the World Economic Forum in its latest biennial Travel and Tourism report. Three Arab nations are listed among the top 10, with Qatar and the UAE ranked 2nd and 3rd behind Finland, the world’s safest nation. The nations were ranked on the basis of “common crime and violence as well as terrorism, and the extent to which police services can be relied upon to provide protection from crime,” the report states. “In Oman, we have good diplomatic relations with our neighbours,” said one expat. “People are cultured and peaceful in Oman and the levels of frustration are very low. The government has always kept security measures strong.”
Media campaign Richard Pakenham, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer for Times of Oman, said: “This is set to be the most inclusive media campaign ever seen in Oman and MMG is perfectly placed to provide all the interactive channels to make it happen. We want this to reflect the huge affection which people feel for His Majesty Sultan Qaboos.” Times of Oman readers can participate by registering their names online via the link

MUSCAT: An Asian woman allegedly sexually abused and assaulted by her manager was found by police lying by a traffic signal in Muscat. The woman, now recovering in hospital, told police she had been sexually and physically assaulted, a reliable source in the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said. “During the investigation, she revealed that she was sexually abused by the hotel manager who also kept her in illegal confinement. Another female staffer of the hotel, accompanied by some female employees, also assaulted her,” the source in the ROP said the woman claimed. He said the woman was found near a traffic signal in Ruwi. “She was first taken to the Khoula hospital on October 6 in an ambulance, and then shifted to the ROP hospital,” the source added. >A4

her friend Ruwane Delsara Samaraweera drowned in the spring in Salalah on Saturday evening, while apparently trying to click selfies. “I never thought this could happen to my child. If I were a little more cautious and had prevented them from taking pictures there, I would not have lost her. I will never encourage any child to be so obsessed with taking pictures, especially at places where this could endanger one’s life,” Rashed said. Zainab and Ruwane, both from Sri Lanka and Class VIII students in Salalah, drowned in the waters of the 0.47-kilome-
tre-long Ain Garziz spring. The girls, both 13 years old, were on a holiday trip to the spring with their parents and didn’t know how to swim.

Too late “I was just a few metres away and had gone to fetch drinking water for them when I heard people screaming. Initially, I couldn’t understand what had happened but then I saw Ruwane’s father trying to pull out the girls from water.
