Auto agencies asked to furnish spare parts list FAHAD AL MUKRASHI
fahad@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: All the automobile agencies engaged in servicing of vehicles in the Sultanate have been asked by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP) to send a list of parts that need to be changed in case of damage without the need of changing the entire unit. The PACP has stated that some workshops belonging to automobile agencies change the entire unit of the vehicle instead of replacing only the damaged part. It leads to huge loss to consumers during the repair of the vehicle. Such a practice is considered

DUBAI/MUSCAT: OMR3.66 million of stolen jewellery and goods have been recovered in Oman and the conman arrested in a joint operation between the Sultanate and Dubai police. The undercover teams of Dubai police discovered that the accused had fled to Oman and was going round the shops showcasing the stolen jewellery at prices much lower than their original prices, reported The National in the UAE. Praising the bond between the UAE and Oman, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Muzaina, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said constant cooperation, coordination and exchange of information between Oman and the UAE led to the arrest of several accused and busting the gangs of high-profile criminals. It is due to such cooperation between Dubai Police and Oman

police, he said, that the accused (M.S.A.), a man of Emirati nationality was nabbed in an operation dubbed ‘Al Barq-ul Khatef’ (Swift Lightning). The swindler had taken advantage of his position as driver of a VIP to buy jewellery worth OMR3.66 million using fake cheques and attempted to sell them in a neighbouring country. Regarding Operation ‘Al Barqul Khatef’, Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief at Criminal Investigation Affairs, said that the Dubai Police had received tip-offs about a person visiting jewellers’ shops to purchase their most valuable pieces of jewellery and then asking them to send the purchased items to topend hotel rooms, pretending to be
the agent of a VIP by producing cards, papers, envelopes and seals with that person’s name engraved on them, and giving dud cheques for the purchased goods. Subsequently, the Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police formed a team to gather evidence and verify the authenticity of the information. During investigation, the CID team discovered that the person was a habitual offender and was also wanted in some financial fraud cases. In a swift move, the team contacted duped shopkeepers and got details of the stolen jewellery and methods employed by the criminal while stealing jewellery from their shops. Consequently, all the stolen items were identified and the operation was successfully com-
pleted even before the case was registered with the police. Maj Gen Al Mansoori confirmed that the Dubai Police uses its databases for analysing information from the quick response teams for the location and arrest of the accused. Maj Gen Al Muzaina confirmed that the CID has investigated several high-profile international cases in the past with active co-operation and true professionalism of its staff and various departments. Though the criminals have employed new methods to evade the law, the wide database of Dubai Police, their sources of information have led to their arrests. The systematic work of Dubai police has led to breakthrough in many cases in the past.

Indian budget airline fares off balance with Kerala fliers REJIMON K
reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Steep fares of the Indian budget airline to the southern Indian state of Kerala from Muscat have shocked passengers in Oman. The average return ticket fare (non-changeable and non-refundable) of Air India Express hovers around OMR180 in July and August, the peak season when most Indians in Oman visit their home country as Indian schools are closed for summer. “When I checked with the Air India office to book a ticket for the end of June to Kerala, ticket prices shocked me. I was trying to book the tickets six months in advance and even then it was beyond my budget. They claim they are the only budget airline. They are not that at all,” Radhakrishna

Kurup, a teacher in one of the Indian schools in the Sultanate, told Times of Oman. As the fares were beyond his purchasing power, Kurup purchased tickets on Qatar Airways. “The tickets I purchased to the same destination on Qatar Airways were around 25 per cent cheaper than that of Air India Express. Moreover, I can carry more
baggage and enjoy a happy journey. The only problem is that I will have to sit in the aircraft for 90 minutes more as the flight will first fly to Doha and then to Kerala,” added Kurup. The fares to most of the other destinations where the budget airline flies from Muscat are also either high or the tickets are already sold out.
A random search by Times of Oman shows that other airlines have either cheaper or somewhat similar rates to the same destination even though they are full-service carriers with more facilities for passengers. “It is a misnomer that tickets are cheaper on budget airlines. Let it be a budget or full-service airline, the operational costs are almost
the same. So, the rates will also be almost similar,” said BP Kulkarni, country manager of Air India in Muscat. “Fuel costs and other expenses are the same for all airlines,” added the country manager. period, surprisingly, the price is around OMR400. “It is not a new phenomenon, it happens every year. This is the time when a budget airline can make money,” said Raji Demonte, general manager at Universal Travels. “Ticket rates for the required period are affordable in fullservice carriers,” added Demonte. Meanwhile, another travel agent said that fares to some European and American destinations during the same period are much cheaper when compared to destinations in India.
