MUSCAT: “Be ready to face strict legal action if you cross the wadis during the storm,” the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned the public. “We have issued an advisory asking people not to cross the wadis, if they do so, they will be violating the rules,” an ROP official told Times of Oman. With tropical storm Ashobaa closing in on the Sur coast, the ROP has asked motorists to stay away from the dangerous wadis. The ROP official said, “Most of the deaths and injuries recorded during these weather conditions have occurred when people were trying to cross wadis.” He added that they put not just

their lives but the rescue personnel’s lives in danger too. A safety expert advised people not to “challenge the nature.” He said, “People try to behave irrationally while trying to cross a wadi forgetting that even an oil tanker can float and will be swept away by water. They overestimate the power of their vehicle.” He added, “We can never understand how a vehicle will behave under such conditions.” In its Wednesday evening’s update, the Public Authority of Civil Aviation (PACA) said that the tropical storm was 220km away from the Southern Al Sharqiyah coast with maximum
sustained surface winds speed between 35 and 45 knots associated with convective clouds band around 120km away from the coasts. “Heavy rains and strong winds are expected in the coming 48 hours. The wave height will be ranging from four to seven metres. The storm will continue to move towards South Al Sharqiyah coastal areas between Ras Al Hadd and Masirah associated with moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds over southern Sharqiyah, gradually extending to northern Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah and Batinah” the PACA statement said. Meteorologists from Accuweather.com said Ashobaa would continue to sit off the coast, remaining stationary through Thursday and drifting closer on Thursday night into Friday. “Our forecast is that the storm will weaken as it drifts towards the coast. The heaviest rain will be right along the Sur coast to Masirah Island, between 25 and 75mm. Rough surf of 2-4 metres is expected with wind speed of 50-80 km/hr,” Anthony Sagliani, International Meteorologist at Accuweather.com, told Times of Oman in an email interview. >A6 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

MUSCAT: While the severity of tropical storm Ashobaa is difficult to predict, safety experts have said it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. “People should be smart and need to be ready for the unexpected,” said a safety expert who has been in the adventure business for many years. He advised people to stock up on emergency supplies. “Preparing your family and your home for a storm that is predicted is your responsibility. Stock supplies such as flashlight, candles, emergency medicines and first aid kits, apart from nonperishable food items, extra drinking water, cash and a gas cylinder,” he said. “I would also advise people not to sleep deep at night. It is important to check if everything is alright. For example, you should check if there is water entering the house,” he said. He also said people must switch off all electrical sockets that are sometimes left on. In other advice, the safety expert said one must keep buckets around to collect water and put a mesh on the tank, so that water can be collected during this crisis. He also asked residents to be alert to their surroundings. An official of the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance on Wednesday said, “We request everyone to remain cautious when it rains and not step out unless there is an emergency.” In a statement, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said that motorists should check their vehicles and

ensure that windscreen wipers and headlights are working. Meanwhile, Mark Pudwell, business development and training manager, Competence HR, said the most important aspect of safety during stormy weather is to obey all instructions from the ROP and Civil Defence. “Those that choose to ignore this valuable information and then require to be rescued are endangering the lives of the rescuers. These agencies are highly trained and experienced in dealing with such dangerous weather, so all their advice and reminders must be followed. Fortunately, most people do heed the warnings. However, in spite of this, some people can find themselves in a desperate situation through no fault of theirs,” he told the Times of Oman. >A6
