CHECK JOB CONTRACT BEFORE VISIT TO OMAN, INDIANS TOLD After a young woman was duped, the Indian envoy has advised countrymen to check the employment offer before boarding the flight REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: India’s Ambassador to Oman, Indra Mani Pandey, has warned Indians travelling to the Sultanate to be 100 per cent sure about the job they have been offered before boarding the plane. The envoy said his department would gladly check, vet and corroborate offers of employment and living conditions arranged by employers in Oman before any Indian national flies here for work. A young Indian woman, who believed she was coming to Oman to work as a receptionist, was put to work as a housemaid in Salalah, prompting the embassy to issue

this warning. She had travelled, unwittingly, on forged documents and middlemen had kept her passport. “Those who wish to seek opportunities for employment abroad have to follow the official process and refrain from travelling abroad on any kind of visa other than an employment visa,” Pandey said. “The system is aimed at protecting the rights of Indians working abroad, including female domestic workers, ensuring their wages, working and living conditions,” the ambassador said, appealing to Indian nationals to follow the right process under eMigrate system. “They should ensure that their

contract clearly specifies their wages as well as working conditions,” the ambassador said, adding that the embassy is ready to provide any information required by Indian nationals who want to come to Oman on employment visas including verification, if required, of the working conditions promised by their employers. After the intervention of embassy officials and social workers, the 22-year-old woman from the south Indian state of Kerala was repatriated back on Tuesday. Talking to the Times of Oman, the Indian woman, who is also a graduate degree holder, was offered a receptionist’s job in Oman and was brought on a tourist visa. “I was given an offer letter and I was told that I would be employed as a receptionist in a company. I paid INR100,000 (approximately OMR577) for the visa and air ticket back in India to the agents. As nobody was there to guide me, I trusted them. They betrayed me,” she said. >A3

TARIQ ZIAD AL HAREMI

tariqh@timesofoman.com

MUSCAT: Slow drivers using the fast (left-most) lane on a highway could face jail term and a fine, according to an Omani traffic law. A common nuisance in Oman is when people drive slowly in the fast lane on the Sultan Qaboos Highway, which results in a long line of vehicles. “Whoever is driving on the fast lane and doesn’t speed much, causing inconvenience to the drivers behind will be booked for a violation,” said a senior official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP). “If the driver wants to drive at his own pace, the middle and the right lanes are there for him,” added the official. According to the Executive Regulations of the Traffic Law, Article 91, a driver shall keep to the further most right side of the road; especially if his or her actual speed is less than the maximum speed limit. Some members of the public have also voiced their frustration over such drivers. “Those people really drive me nuts. The worse is when they don’t want to move. You flash your lights and they don’t want to move even though the middle and

the right lanes are free,” said an Omani national on the condition of anonymity. “Sometimes you see all three lanes driving at the same speed, blocking the road,” he added. Melanie Crasta, an expat said, “We have to be at work at a certain time, so we leave our homes at a particular time so that we can reach our predetermined destinations at the right time without crossing speed limits, but these kinds of people delay us and sometimes even force us to drive faster and maybe even rashly.” Slower fast lane drivers usually force vehicles behind them to break the law by overtaking them. “These types of drivers create anxiety on the roads because some people might be in a hurry or need to get somewhere urgently. God forbid there is an emergency or an ambulance needs to get by.” According to Article 51 of the traffic law, 30 days imprisonment and a fine of OMR150 or either one shall be handed to those who violate Articles (61/part 2, 71, 81, 91) of the Executive Regulations of the Traffic Law. Those who drive slowly on Oman’s highways are advised to drive in the furthermost right lane so as to not cause any inconvenience to other drivers.

termined to work to reinforce the special ties that already exists between Oman and the UK. I would also like to acknowledge the sup-

port of my husband in everything I have done, although sadly he died in November last year,” she said. “Oman is in many ways a young country reborn in 1970 so, of course, there have been challenges and frustrations but I think that being a woman here actually has many advantages in terms of getting things done,” she added. In 1996 she set up Al Manahil which specialises in the supply of books and educational material to the government and private sector. Maggie has run the British Business Forum www.bbfoman.org for many years which aims to promote UK/Oman business links.
