MUSCAT: Accident rate in the Sultanate has declined by 15 per cent, along with a decline in the mortality rate by 14.5 per cent and injuries by 68.7 per cent.

The preliminary statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) showed 483 accidents by the end of January 2015, down from 568 reported in the same month last year.

There were 59 fatalities reported in traffic accidents during the same period, down from 69 in the same month last year. The deceased included 39 Omanis, of whom 30 were males.

The number of deaths from traffic accidents involving expatriates in January 2015 totalled 20, comprising 13 males and seven females. Many roads flooded as rain sweeps back into Sultanate Times News Service MUSCAT: Light to moderate rain hit parts of Oman on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation (DGMAN), which monitors weather conditions in the Sultanate. While residents in Buraimi and Musandam witnessed light rains, Sohar and its adjoining areas witnessed moderate rains on Wednesday evening. “Some of the interior roads were flooded,” said residents in Sohar. The meteorological department had forecast rains in Oman as a huge trail of clouds were passing the coastal areas. The weather is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains in the northern governorates as well as poor horizontal visibility. For the next 48 hours, the DGMAN has predicted partly cloudy skies over the governorates of Musandam, Northern and southern Al Batinah, Muscat and Al Dakhiliah in addition to northern and southern Al Sharqiya, with chances of rain, thundershowers with winds and hail. “There are chances of late

The DGMAN has also called on motorists to use extreme caution on wet roads and in areas where there is low visibility, and refrain from venturing into wadis. “The rains will also bring down the temperature significantly in some areas of Oman,” added the official. Meanwhile, law-enforcement agencies have advised campers to follow safety measures during their trips in the next few days. “The measures include avoiding camping near wadis and keeping the children away from troughs,” said an official. Public was advised to follow weather updates issued by the meteorology department.

MUSCAT: Al Nahdha Hospital has issued a notice to the public informing them that it will be closed from Wednesday and that all appointments have been rescheduled. The notice also informed that in-patients have been transferred to Khoula and the Royal Hospitals. Decision The decision has been taken following the prediction of rain in Muscat on Wednesday and Thursday. An official source at the Ministry of Health said that due to the weather conditions affecting the Sultanate these days, it was decided to shut down Al Nahdha Hos-

pital and delay the visiting hours for specialised clinics at the hospital on Thursday as a precautionary measure. Shifted The source also said that some in-patients at the internal medicine ward were transferred to the Royal Hospital and some in-patients at the surgical ward were shifted to Khoula Hospital. Source said that emergency cases for ophthalmology, ENT and dental clinics should proceed to Khoula Hospital while emergency cases for dermatology, internal medicine and paediatrics should visit the Royal Hospital. - ONA

fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Embassies should be educating expatriates about life and laws in Oman before they arrive here to start working, said the Ministry of Manpower. An official from the ministry recently met with the Bangladeshi embassy and discussed the issue, according to a statement by the ministry. In the statement, the official said that embassies should play a major role in educating their citizens and that the ministry is ready to co-operate with them. There are 1,575,298 expatriates working in the private sector in the Sultanate and 59,952 in the government. Out of the 1,575,298

expatriates, 605,543 are Indians, 543,377 are Bangladeshis, 214,106 are Pakistanis and 13,510 are Sri Lankans, apart from 33,221 Ethiopians, 38,144 Indonesians and 31,378 Filipinos. There are also 23,329 Egyptians, 12,751 Nepalese and 59,939 others of various nationalities working in the Sultanate. Welcoming the idea, embassy officials have said that their respective countries have various kinds of programmes to inform citizens of the regulations in the country they are heading to. sist that workers get orientation training in Dhaka before joining the Sultanate job market. All the workers joining the Sultanate have to undergo three weeks of training before taking up any job in Oman, he said. Unskilled and semi-skilled Sri Lankan nationals looking for jobs do have to undergo a five-day training schedule in Sri Lanka before taking up a job in Oman. “For housemaids coming for the first time, the training is for 21 days which is organised by the Foreign Employment Bureau of the Sri Lankan government,” said an official of their embassy in Muscat.
