MUSCAT: Fire safety experts and rescuers have called for smoke detectors to be made mandatory in all Oman homes after a 7-monthold baby was rescued from an apartment without fire safety kit. Fire fighters and paramedics raced to the family home on Sunday night and rescued the young child and its parents. The incident has sparked calls for a scheme to install smoke detectors inside every residential home. That call has been backed
by doctors, fire safety experts and insurance firms. Even the firefighters - who attend an average 10 call-outs every day - say they should be fitted inside homes, especially as the summer temperatures continue to climb and fire danger escalates. The baby was rescued from a house in North Al Hail, Wilayat Seeb, in Muscat. There was no update available on current condition but the injured baby was given medical treatment for smoke inhalation. According to tweets by the Pub-
lic Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance, (PACDA) the house was on fire with some occupants trapped inside. “The firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and a 7-month-old in medium condition was given first aid as a result of inhaling smoke,” the rescue service stated in a tweet. PACDA has been handling ten fire incidents on an average every

New mobile numbers starting with 7 soon Times News Service MUSCAT: New eight-digit mobile numbers starting with the number 7 instead of 9 will be launched on July 17, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman announced on Monday. The numbers will be available to subscribers through telecom operators, except for special numbers, which will be electronically auctioned in a transparent manner. “The allocation of these numbers will take place later through licensees once the auction hosting scheme is prepared,” the Telecommunications Regulatory
Authority said in a statement issued on Monday. Hamdan Moosa Al Harasi, acting vice president, corporate strategy at Omantel, confirmed TRA’s plan, saying this would be the second major change in the numbering plan after the full overhaul that occurred in 2004-2005 when mobile numbers were changed from seven to eight digits and fixed numbers from six to eight digits. Thanking TRA for this initiative, which will ensure operators’ ability to meet the rapid growth in mobile subscribers, Al Harasi said this change will not have an impact on the existing numbers, nor the services offered to customers. >A5

day since 2011. Car fires have also increased in the past month as temperatures rise. The service has issued an infographic warning motorists about the dangers of driving unserviced vehicles in extreme temperatures. James Raft, a licenced fire protection engineer from Aman Fire Protection Consultancy, said that installing smoke detectors should be mandatory in all homes
in Oman due to unexpected fire outbreaks. “The standard places to install smoke detectors are in sleeping areas, the hall and outside the kitchen door. If the alarm goes off, it alerts the occupants to evacuate the house immediately and could allow them to go back inside to extinguish the fire if it is a small one,” said Raft. He added that smoke detectors are inexpensive and work 100 per cent of the time. A spokesman for PACDA said: “We highly recommend that each house has a smoke detector installed as a precaution to be safer in case a fire breaks out.” Several experts – including PACDA – have, however, also cautioned that the tradition of burning incense or frankincense indoors could mean smoke detectors are constantly triggered. In that case, fire extinguishers should be fitted. >A5

MUSCAT: A safety expert has called upon Omani drivers not to play Pokemon Go while driving. Based around Nintendo’s popular video game franchise, the augmented reality app allows users to catch imaginary creatures in real-life surroundings using their phone’s camera. Although the game has not been officially launched through Oman’s Apple Store, Pokemon fans are downloading the game from stores in different regions. Meanwhile, traffic safety expert Wahid Al Kharusi said that using such games on the roads can lead to accidents.
However, while he advised that the location-based game should not be banned, awareness about using the game responsibly must be raised by the authorities. “If people are educated about how to use the game, and taught about its dangers, they will react to that and play it in a responsible manner,” Al Kharusi added. While traffic safety experts around the globe criticise the game, it does, on the other hand, encourage users to go outside and explore their surroundings. Popular landmarks, such as The Child Museum in Al Qurum, some roundabouts in Ruwi and other public locations, are being used as Pokemon centres for app players to buy virtual items for their beloved Pokemons. >A6
