GRAPPLING WITH CRISIS: Water shortage continues in many areas of Muscat and Sohar. –File photo
As parts of Muscat and Sohar continue to suffer amid the cut-off, some water merchants have hiked prices
reji@timesofoman.com fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Consumer protection officials have urged residents, whose water supply has been cut off for days, to register complaints against unscrupulous water suppliers. “If we do not get complaints, how can we intervene? If somebody complains against the water suppliers, we will file a case and fine them,” said an official from the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP). “We are at the scene, but people need to speak up,” added the offi-
cial. As the water shortage continues in many areas in Muscat and Sohar, water tanker owners are charging exorbitantly, people told the Times of Oman. Residents in Ghala said suppliers are asking for OMR150 for a tanker carrying 10,000 gallons of water, which was OMR90 just before the water crisis started. “There are 225 flats in our building. We need around eight 10,000-gallon water tankers per day. Life is becoming horrible. We do not know when this issue will be resolved,” said residents in Ghala. “Our building caretakers are running from pillar to post to obtain water at a reasonable price, but the suppliers are ex-
ploiting us,” said residents. In Ghala, the water problem has been continuing for the past five weeks. Residents in Sohar said that suppliers are asking for OMR40 for 400 gallons of water, when it was just OMR4 earlier. “We have heard that in some areas, water supply is being restored slowly, but in other areas of the town people are still suffering. There are a few wells in some Omani houses and they have been kind enough to help us. For the past week, we have depended on them,” said residents in Sohar. People in Barka have also been facing a similar situation for the past week. “We are getting a few litres of water from suppliers. However, that is not enough, with restaurants being the worst affected,” said residents. Meanwhile, as the water shortage continued in several areas, the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) officials have recommended that people instal water tanks in their buildings to cope during an emergency. >A6 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

Number of amnesty-seekers much lower than expected REJIMON K
reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Even though thousands of illegal expatriates in Oman including absconders and migrant workers, have registered for the immigration amnesty, the number is far lower than what the embassies expected. As the three-month-long amnesty enters its tenth day, around 3,000 workers from five Asian countries have registered with the Ministry of Manpower asking for amnesty. The data on a new ministry website reveals that 3,148 mi-

grant workers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Bangladesh have registered with the ministry. Broken down by country of origin, there are 1,243 Pakistanis, 859 Indians, 855 Bangladeshis, 100 Sri Lankans and 91 Filipinos. “Uploading the data on the official website is a move to maintain
transparency. With the uploaded data, an employer will be able to check whether his employee who has absconded has registered himself with the ministry for amnesty or not. Moreover, the data will also make it easy for the ministry in functioning,” said an official from the Ministry of Manpower. >A6
