MUSCAT: While tropical storm Ashobaa brought heavy rain to Sur and Masirah, it gave the capital area a miss. On Friday, the Sultan’s Armed Forces, Royal Oman Police, Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance, and the National Committee for Civil Defence personnel together rescued 109 people in Sur and Masirah. Police helicopters rescued 28 people, including children, who were stuck in flooded areas in Sur. While damage to property and vehicles were reported from dif-
ferent parts of Oman, several people were rescued by civil defence personnel as Oman received light to heavy rains through Thursday and Friday. Till 4.00 pm on Friday, the Oman meteorological department recorded 231mm of rain in Masirah, which was reportedly very high. While Sur recorded 53.2mm, Guba 56.4mm, Ras Al Hadd 53mm, and Qalhat received 47.8mm, apart from Bidiyah 12.2mm and Quriyat 5.2mm. The rain, which started on Friday early morning in Sur and Masirah, became heavy by 11 am inundating low-lying areas.
“In Sur, the village of Bilad was badly affected as it is a low-lying area. People had to be rescued from there. Police and civil defence officials did a commendable job,” residents in Sur told the Times of Oman. In an operation, personnel from Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) rescued 15 people from one of the houses. “They are in good health,” said the PACDA officials. In a tweet, the PACDA officials advised people who stay near wadis to move elsewhere or to a government shelter. Urging residents and citizens to co-operate, the PACDA officials said this would make it easier for the personnel to rescue the needy.
Apart from the rescue operations, the PACDA tweeted safety instructions in different languages for the benefit of expatriates. Since the water in the wadis will take time to recede, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has urged citizens not to risk their lives and check the water level before crossing a wadi. ROP also urged parents not to allow children to play near wadis or ponds. There were rumours that a girl child had gone missing but police denied it. In a tweet on its official twitter handle, the police said that the child was safe and with her parents. “So far, there is no report of loss of life. We are alert and doing our job without a break,” a doctor from Sur hospital also confirmed to the Times of Oman. Meanwhile, Masirah residents said rain was still continuing. “A majority of the low lying areas are inundated. Life is out of gear and there is disruption in power supply too,” said the residents. >A3
MUSCAT: In what is good news for residents facing water shortage in Muscat, engineers working in the Ministry of Defence have started digging wells in different areas of the governorate. The ministry’s personnel have started digging wells in Mawaleh, Al Khoud, Seeb, and Bausher along with Ghubra and Ansab that could provide drinking water in these areas. Engineering services of the ministry, in co-operation with the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW), are proceeding with these plans and intend to extend coverage to areas affected by the water shortage, according to the ministry. Civil officer Eng. Khamis bin Jamil Al Badri, associated with public health and environmental safety in the engineering services of the ministry, confirmed the plan. “The wells will be fitted with pumps and other utilities needed to ensure that citizens and residents receive clean water as soon as possible,” he said. In a recent interview to the Times of Oman, Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Mahrouqi, chairman of the PAEW, had said that the armed forces were assisting the PAEW with logistical details of the affected areas, providing them with equipment and human resources wherever needed, and also helping them to dig more wells to meet the needs of people. Al Mahrouqi said that the army supplies water in “big tankers” for specific consumers such as hospitals, schools and other ‘critical’ facilities that provide essential services and cannot do without uninterrupted supply. The army is a big supporter of the PAEW, he added. -With inputs from ONA

ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN: Sheikh Kahlan Al Kharusi, Oman’s Assistant Grand Mufti, has joined over 100 international delegations of religious and political leaders in Astana, Kazakhstan at a congress aimed at promoting peace and tolerance. Al Kharusi and the other leaders are attending the 5th Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions hosted by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The congress has brought together leaders from different religions and philosophies, including Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism and the Baha’i faith. Opening the congress in the Kazakh capital on Wednesday, Nazarbayev told the delegates that such a gathering was proof that differences and disputes between people with different belief sys-

tems aren’t irreconcilable. He said people from around the world have much in common and their basic tenets of their faiths are similar. “The goal of our faiths is to return individuals and humanity to the path towards lost perfection.
This, too, is the aim of the Astana interreligious summit. The events of the contemporary times make our congress an important element of global dialogue,” Nazarbayev said. Ban Ki-moon said the congress provided an opportunity for religious leaders to find common ground and seek solutions together for international problems such as terrorism, organised crime, an ever-worsening environment and divisive politics. “We meet at a time when dialogue is needed more than ever,” he said. He said religious leaders must set positive examples for their followers and speak out against those who choose to commit violence in the name of religions. He described such violence as crimes against religion, not just against the individuals who are targeted. “It’s not religion that causes violence. It’s not religion that kills people. It’s just individuals
who choose to espouse violence, wrongly and cynically invoking faith to do so,” Ban said. Al Kharusi spoke during the panel titled “Religious and Political Leaders: the Responsibility to Humankind.” In his address he said the world is undergoing many changes and that this congress was an opportunity to work towards a brighter future for all people and the earth. Al Kharusi spoke of the need for religious morality to combat contemporary problems such as aggressive atheism, excessive consumerism, and scientific developments that threaten natural human dignity. He said religious leaders have a responsibility to God to care for all of humanity, regardless of their cultures or creeds, since all people share common experiences such as feelings. “We must cooperate and... bring together efforts in the name of peace, creation and development,” he said.
