Community help needed to improve the care of people with special needs
SUNDAY BEAT SALEH AL SHAIBANY
T
he community has been asked to help in the effort to empower people with disability. Making the appeal last Thursday, the National Committee for the Welfare of the Disabled sought the support of the community urging it to play its part in improving the services “provided to people with disability.” The struggle to empower people with disability starts with children born with both physical and mental problems. It goes beyond lip service and the meetings of national committees. There are not enough schools for disabled children. The existing schools that cater to them do not have enough qualified teachers, either. For example, the common types of disabilities in Oman are children born with autism and Down Syndrome. At the few schools that cater to these needs, most of the personnel are “minders” but classified as teachers for parents by these institutions. They are more a day-care centre than an actual place of learning. The other disturbing factor about private institutions for children with special needs is that they charge exorbitant
fees that are beyond the pockets of many parents. Sadly, the birth of a disabled child does not take into consideration the earnings of parents. Hence, young couples with their first child being disabled go through a challenging time. It starts with the psychology of raising such a child, sleepless nights and the last thing they need is to arrange finances they cannot afford on their own for their education. The other common factor is that classes mix up children with different disabilities not acknowledging that each category needs different attention. Most importantly, their needs are separate and cannot be streamlined. Then there are issues of having the right space, technology, specialised playground and extra care. For instance, truly qualified teachers would tell you an autistic child or one with Down Syndrome needs three times the attention one would normally reserve for a normal child. Then they are those with attention deficiencies, development and intellectual delays. But equally important, the few schools that accept children with special needs do not work and collaborate with parents. Neither are any governmental or private agencies. Parents are left to their own devices to deal with the everyday turmoil of raising a disabled child. If it takes a lot to teach such children in just a few hours a day it is certainly a battlefield at home. They need the power of mutual sharing to deal with the feelings of isolation, anxieties, confusion and even bitterness. Emotional and information support is as important as
schooling for their children. Though the common disabilities, such as autism and Down Syndrome, are well known in Oman, many parents have to deal with other severities, such as cerebral palsy, dyslexia and Tourette Syndrome. Some of the parents do not even know that their children have problems because they cannot recognise the symptoms of a child that has more complex problems like temper tantrums or an obsessive compulsive disorder. They just associate it with disobedience or just mischief. As they grow up to adolescence, the problem becomes harder to contain. This is where community centres are badly needed for parents to just step out of their houses and drive a short distance to get help instead for their special need children. When the Ministry of Health introduced the health centres in the communities in the 1990s it has removed the inconvenience of patients driving to major hospitals in Muscat for 800,000 residents. A similar scheme is needed to satisfy the needs for disability for information dissemination, experience sharing, early intervention services, training and therapy. Such disability services right in the communities would make parents cope better with the upbringing of their disabled children and give them hope knowing that help is near.

Manga medium for Omani art Fatima Al Lawati’s Manga creation ‘Black Night Symphony is a story of a girl, who is being exploited at her wizards’ academy for special abilities to perform magic
TARIQ ZIAD AL HAREMI
tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Japanese art and anime (animation) have gained popularity among the Omani youth, with one of them publishing her own Manga (Japanese comic) in both English and Arabic. Fatima Al Lawati was interested in Japanese Manga and anime from a young age and wanted to portray the complexities of the art and its emotions for viewers and readers. On December 20, 2015, she self-published the first volume of Manga, entitled “Black Night Symphony,” which is available in Arabic and English. At four chapters and 212 pages, comedy/supernatural/fantasy Manga is a story of a girl, who is
being exploited at her wizards’ academy due to her hidden, special abilities to perform magic, which prompt her to escape and find the truth behind her abilities and the reason for her exploitation. “This Manga took me eight years when I was working on it by myself since I was a student in school,” said Al Lawati. “I began to write the story at the beginning of 2004 and started drawing the storyboard and main characters in 2009. Between 2009 and 2014, I was learning new techniques and gaining some experience by reading original Japanese comics and participating in Manga contests in Japan,” she added. Al Lawati also published a shorter story prior to ‘Black Night Symphony’ entitled ‘Okami no Kami,’ which translates to ‘The
Fox Hair,’ which is based on the famous fairytale ‘Red Riding Hood.’ “Japanese Manga and anime have a different style than other comics and fine arts. You can express your emotions, feelings and ideas, as well as knowledge of other cultures into this style freely,” explained Al Lawati about Manga. “Reading other people’s Manga work makes you feel what they feel and what they want to say about life, culture or themselves. That’s why Manga caught my eyes and I became interested in mastering the [art] since I was a child,” she added. Since Manga and Japanese art is a relatively new concept for the Omani community, Al Lawati hopes they can learn the culture and accept it as one of the arts to be practiced in the Sultanate. Due to a lack of support, Al Lawati self-published her comic, which gained her more popularity among her readers. Advising youth, who want to chase their dreams, Al Lawati said, “Stop waiting for someone to push you; start moving and chase your dreams even if others see it as fiddling.” “Have the courage to take the first step and never be afraid to try something new—nothing will stop you. Do what you love, love what you’re doing and never look back,” she added. Al Lawati’s Manga is available for sale, to book a copy, contact her at faji.allawati@hotmail.com or send her a direct message and follow her on Instagram @f.jay

Charity golf to raise OMR14,000 for autism awareness GAUTAM VISWANATHAN
gautam@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: The Al Mouj Golf Club at The Wave, Muscat, held its annual Golf Fore Autism charity tournament on the 10th of November to raise awareness about autism in the Sultanate. The tournament was sponsored, in cooperation with the Association for Early Intervention for Children with Disabilities in Oman. Now in its third year, the tournament was begun by Al Mouj’s golf course superintendent Steve Johnson, who has been in Oman for six years. “We hope to raise about OMR14,000 for Autism Awareness this time. We have 16 corporate teams participating, and every team donate done thousand Rials to compete, although some of them preferred to donate items. “Shangri-La, the Ritz Carlton
and the Chedi all have teams here. Muscat Duty Free and HSBC have also sent teams to compete,” he said. Although the tournament is dedicated towards a good cause, for Johnson and his wife, Kylie, it is also a more personal project. “My eldest son, Lachlan, was six years old and had not hit any of his tell-tale development signs of early childhood,” said Johnson. “We had him enrolled in preschool and we realised very quickly that he wasn’t progressing with his peers. “We found out at that stage that there was very little available to us in Oman. We went back to Australia on holiday and the people over there quickly evaluated him and told us he had Sensory Processing Disorder, which is on the autism spectrum. “He doesn’t know how to control his senses,” Johnson explained.
“If you are walking down a dark alley and are startled by a cat, you might get scared, but you will realise what it is and calm down, but he doesn’t have the facility to calm down. We’re very fortunate that he is developing through it, but he does have his own challenges.” On returning to Oman, Johnson realised he had to do something to raise awareness about autism in the region. Later, the Association for Early Intervention for Children with Disabilities, were in touch
with the authorities and organised the tournament on his behalf. Present at Golf Fore Autism were Barka Shahbal Al Bakry, the association’s Vice President, and Sabah Mohammed Al Bahlani, the organisation’s CEO. “Something like Golf Fore Autism is great because it brings awareness to a cause, such as autism,” said Al Bakry, who is also the national representative for the International Association for Volunteer Efforts. “There are more than 3,000 children with autism in Oman. We need to raise as much awareness as possible about this,” she added. “Last year, we had specialists from the New England Autism Centre in Abu Dhabi conduct a workshop in both English and Arabic, and it was attended by about 150 people. At the moment, we don’t have many specialists in Oman to address autism, so we
need to raise funds to bring people from abroad.” “In the first year of this event, we brought in people from Autism Awareness Australia to conduct a workshop,” added Johnson. “It was great to see men, especially Omani men, come forward and talk about the problems they’d experienced, because people in their families have autism.” A single email sent by Johnson requesting memorabilia to be auctioned off to raise funds was met with 18 autographed flags from Adam Scott, the winner of the 2015 Masters Tournament, and Dany Willet, winner of this year’s Masters. More memorabilia poured in from golfers Tom Watson and Jon Daly, while Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Graham McDowell and Henrik Stenson sent him an autographed golfing bag. Also, Champion golfer Rory
McIlroy sent a replica golf club and signed shirt, while more was sent by Padraig Harrington, Kegan Bradley, Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson. Other prizes include return business-class flights to Dubai with flydubai and two season tickets to the DP World Tour Championships Final at Jumeirah Golf Estates on November 17, while signed jerseys from football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also up for grabs. “The response of the public has been fantastic,” said Johnson. “When we first started out, it was really difficult to get teams to come and participate, but now we’ve got people calling us up to be part of this. “I am really happy with the response we’ve received for this and it feels great to give back to the community,” added Johnson.

haitham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Ernst & Young (EY) plans to launch a cyber security facility in Oman to protect organisations in the entire Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region from cyber threats and malwares. Mohammed Nayaz, partner at Ernst & Young, and a speaker at the regional IT security conference in Egypt, citing previous accounts, explained that on multiple occasions organisation systems have been compromised and they can do little about it while during other instances they weren’t even aware of being attacked. “Due to automated and integrated systems along with the emergence of new technologies, organisations are becoming more vulnerable to cyber threats and to address this, EY is launching its first integrated Digital Security Operations Centre (DSOC). It will comprehensively monitor the security of IT systems, Operations Technology (OT) systems and IoT (Internet of Things) of organisations on a 24x7 basis in Oman and the GCC,” he said. IT coverage “We respect the wishes of GCC countries to have their own world leading capability to include coverage of IT, industrial control systems and IoT through the use of advanced Cyber Analytics, and importantly, to have it in the region. rahuldas@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: US-Bangla Airlines will connect to Kolkata, India, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Kathmandu, Nepal and several destinations of Bangladesh from Muscat, a senior official from the airline revealed. In an exclusive interview with the Times of Oman, the Managing Director of US-Bangla Airlines, Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun
said Omani citizens and expatriates can now travel to Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and several destinations in Bangladesh with a brief stopover in the country. “Flights to all these destinations will begin from this year,” he said. The Muscat International Airport welcomed the first direct flight of US-Bangla Airlines on Saturday. Al Mamun also said there are plans to connect Salalah in Oman with a direct flight to Bangladesh. “We are working on this but that may take some time,” he said. He also said they are delighted to extend their operations to the second international destination, the Sultanate of Oman. “We are certain that our services connecting Bangladesh to Oman will be successful,” he said. US-Bangla Airlines, voted as the best domestic airline in Bangladesh in 2015, will fly four times a week from Muscat to Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. “But very soon we will fly daily to Muscat,” he said. Commenting on the addition of direct flights to Bangladesh, Ali Zayed Al Balushi, head of Operations at Oman Airports Manage-
ment Company (OAMC) said, “At OAMC, we endeavour to expand our international relations by attracting more international airlines to operate their flights directly from the Muscat International Airport. The addition of direct flights to Bangladesh is of great benefit to travellers from both countries, and will help raise the profile of the Muscat International Airport.” Office inaugurated The city office of US-Bangla Airlines was also inaugurated on Saturday evening at Hamriya. US-Bangla Airlines has appointed Travel Point LLC as its general sales agent (GSA) in Oman. Commenting on the partnership, Sunil Prabhakar said, “This move is a highly strategic and beneficial decision that will work in favour of the larger community of Bangladesh nationals that reside in Sultanate of Oman. We are thankful to the OAMC for being extremely supportive in bringing the airline to Oman. We are sure this proposition will yield good results for both countries and provide a cost effective service to all those intending to visit or travel to Bangladesh.”
As an inaugural offer, USBangla Airlines is offering fares as low as OMR45 to Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet. US-Bangla Airlines (USBA) Ltd. is an affiliate of the USBangla Group, located in Dhaka. US-Bangla Airlines started its journey in July 2014, and in 2016 announced the operation of its first two Boeing 737-800 aircraft. It also launched its first international flights last May with its flights to Nepal’s Tribhuvan airport. The addition of new direct flights to the Sultanate is a significant step towards OAMC’s strategic goal of placing Oman’s airports amongst the top 20 airports in the world by 2020. The number of international airlines operating at the Muscat International Airport now totals 33 carriers. The US-Bangla Airlines (USBA) Ltd is an affiliate of the US-Bangla Group, located in Dhaka. Iraqi army advances in bid to recapture IS-held Mosul despite suicide bombers BAGHDAD: Iraqi special forces backed by US and Iraqi air power took control of two districts of eastern Mosul on Saturday after heavy fighting in which they destroyed nine cars deployed by IS as suicide bombs, the military said. Infantry and armoured division troops also advanced in a nearby neighbourhood, destroying three rocket launchers and killing 30 militants, it said in a statement said. Iraqi troops have been fighting for 10 days inside eastern Mosul, trying to expand their small foothold in the city which IS has controlled since mid-2014, when its leader declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and neighbouring Syria. The nearly four-week campaign to drive IS out of the biggest city under its control in either country has brought together an alliance of 100,000 Iraqi fighters, also backed by thousands of West-

Rebel gains in Aleppo reversed by Syria forces State television said the army swept the Dahiyet Al Assad district for landmines after regaining full control
BEIRUT: The Syrian army captured the Dahiyet Al Assad district of western Aleppo on Saturday, reversing all the gains made by rebels two weeks into their counter-attack against government-held areas, a war monitor and rebel official said. State television said the army swept the suburban area for landmines after regaining full control. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based war monitor, said the army and its allies made several advances on the divided city’s western edge this week, hampering the rebel offensive to break the siege on opposition-held districts. Syrian government forces took Minian village and nearby positions, which were captured by
rebels last month, the Observatory said. Zakaria Malahifji, head of the political office of the Fastaqim rebel group fighting in Aleppo, confirmed the army’s advances. “Of course, when the regime takes control, it has a negative effect, but there is persistence” among the factions, he said. “And hopefully there will be change in the coming days.” The city has been divided for years between the governmentheld west and rebel-held east. Russia-backed assault Syrian government forces launched a major Russianbacked assault on eastern Aleppo in September after besieging the area, which the United Nations says is home to 275,000 people. On October 28, rebels counterattacked in a bid to break the siege, targeting western districts of Aleppo in an offensive that included extremist militants and rebels fighting under the Free Syrian Army banner. But their progress slowed after early advances. Aleppo has become the most intense front in the war. lation of 1.5 million people still living there, helping it launch surprise raids and ambushes on the troops. The military statement said the Counter Terrorism Service took control of the districts of Al Qadisiya Al Thania, which it moved into on Friday, and adjacent Al Arbajiya.
Further south, but still on the eastern fringes, troops from the First Infantry and Ninth Armoured divisions attacked the extremists in the Salam neighbourhood. Security forces and army troops are also advancing on southern and northern fronts close to the city, aiming to open new fronts inside Mosul to put further pressure on the ultra-hardline extremists. The attacking forces include Iraqi army troops and special forces and federal police units. Kurdish peshmerga forces Outside the city, Kurdish peshmerga forces are holding territory to the northeast and paramilitary forces are deployed to the west. They are supported by USled air power, including jets and Apache helicopters, and Western military advisers who have accompanied Iraqi forces on the edge of Mosul. — Reuters

KOBE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday warned of further action against those with black money once the December 30 deadline expires for disclosing demonetised notes, saying they will have to “pay for” unaccounted cash. At the same time, he said honest people have nothing to fear from the government. He also made a veiled attack on the Opposition, saying a section of the people was “egging” others to speak against him on the scheme. “I want to tell the people again and again that the government will do everything to protect the honest. But the dishonest beware, I will make you pay for it,” he said addressing the Indian community here at a reception before winding up his three-day visit to Japan. In a speech laced with barbs and humour, Modi said opportunities were given to those with black money to come clean. “It is not as though opportunity was not given. Then also if you feel that it will be business as usual, I cannot be faulted. After December 30 scheme (the last date for depositing demonetised notes) if you feel that there will be no ac-
Jaitley regrets inconvenience in changing notes NEW DELHI: Amid rising anger among people across India over exchanging the scrapped currency, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday regretted hardships caused due to withdrawal of high denomination notes but advised the public to be patient as the move will have larger benefits for the economy in long term. the government had not done it all of a sudden. The government, he said, had earlier brought out schemes for declaration of black money, the first of which fetched Rs 670 billion.
“Even then people said Modi has failed. In the last two years a sum Rs1.25 lakh crores has been unearthed,” he said. Modi said what the government has done was not to harass anybody. “Difficulties have been there. I have given 50 days time for people to go and deposit their honest money. But I make it clear, that if anything unaccounted comes up, then I will dig the records since Independence. “I will deploy as many people as required for this. Honest people will not face any problem. No one will be spared. Those who know me, they are intelligent as well... They think it is better to offer it to the Ganges than put it in banks... people would refuse to put even 25 paise into the Ganges,” Modi said. He was referring to reports of the demonetised Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes dumped into the river. Then he asked the audience should stolen wealth not be brought out. Modi termed the demonetisation as “Swachhata Abhiyan” and hailed the undaunting spirit of the people despite their hardship following its announcement on November 8. “I salute my countrymen. People stood in line for four hours, six hours but accepted the decision in the national interest the way people of Japan tackled the aftermath of the 2011 disaster,” he said. “I thought long and hard about the possible difficulties and it was also important to keep it a secret. It had to be done suddenly but I never thought I will receive blessings for this,” he said. “I salute each and every Indian. Many families had weddings, health problems...yes they faced inconvenience but they accepted the decision,” the prime minister said. “Law should be equal to everyone. People are happy about the fact that even Modi’s Rs1,000 notes are not usable anymore,” Modi said. - PTI

Ready to work with all opposition parties, says Mamata KOLKATA: Upping the ante against BJP, Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said she is not averse to working with the Communist Party of India(Marxist) and other opposition parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party to fight against the “anti-people” Modi government which has imposed an “undeclared emergency”. “We may have ideological differences with CPI-M but we are ready to work with it and other opposition parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party to save the country. “The anti-people Modi government has imposed an undeclared emergency in the country,” she told a press conference at the state secretariat. “Congress, Mayawati, Mulayam Singh ji, (Arvind) Kejriwal have protested against the demonetisation issue. Let all the opposition parties work together to save the country,” she said, adding that BJP will lose deposits in upcoming elections. Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of conducting a surgical strike on the common people in the name of unearthing black money, she said that the demonetisation move was taken without any proper planning causing immense hardship. “The Modi government had misled the people on the surgical strikes (across the border). The people do not know what had happened,” she said. Turning to Modi’s statement from Japan on the future steps to curb black money, she said, “Now the Prime Minister is threatening the people of the country from foreign land. What will he do? He can put us in jail or shoot us for raising voice. I don’t care. He can also declare emergency,” she said. -PTI

QUETTA: An explosion claimed by militant group IS ripped through a shrine in southwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing at least 43 people and wounding scores, officials said. The blast at Shah Noorani shrine occurred while hundreds of people were inside, local district commissioner Hashim Ghalzai said. Provincial Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said 43 people were killed and Ghalzai said more than 100 were wounded. “Every day, around sunset, there is a dhamaal (ritual dance) here, and there are large numbers of people who come for this,” said Nawaz Ali, the shrine’s custodian.
The shrine is located in Balochistan province about 100km (60 miles) north of the port city of Karachi, to where rescue official Hakeem Nasi told Geo TV dozens of wounded were being moved. The government dispatched 25 ambulances from the nearby town of Hub to the shrine, said Akbar Harifal, provincial home secretary for Balochistan. The army was called in to assist with rescue operations, given the remoteness of the site, Bugti said. It was not clear if the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or a planted device, according to Bugti. The province has seen some

Controversial story was made up, says Nisar ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said that the controversial story published by daily Dawn last month about a high-level national security meeting was not a ‘leak’ but a concocted report. Reported on October 6 by Cyril Almeida, the story claimed on the authority of unnamed sources that the civil leadership of the country had warned the military establishment against international isolation for not taking action against certain militant groups. The report, rejected by the government multiple times, was dubbed by the army ‘a breach of national security’. The government later announced the initiation of a probe into what was earlier called a ‘leak’ and announced a committee under a retired judge to probe the circumstances surrounding the publication of the news item. “A national security leak would have been something discussed during the meeting. However, it was a false story with two thrusts,” Nisar said on Friday, while talking to media at the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) headquarters. “On the one hand it claimed there was an exchange of harsh words between the Punjab chief minister and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief. Let alone an exchange of harsh words, there was not even a difference of opinion,” Nisar claimed. He said the second part of the story was about Pakistan’s socalled isolation in the international community. He said that during the meeting the foreign secretary had never said Pakistan was being isolated; rather he had talked about realignment of Pakistan. “The foreign secretary had maintained that Pakistan’s foes are giving the impression that Pakistan is facing isolation while in fact it is not the matter,” he said. “He had talked about the opportunities which Pakistan may avail as there are many countries who want to become part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).” According to the interior minister, 34 high-level security meetings had taken place in the past three and a half years about nonstate actors and he was present in

each such meeting. He said Pakistan is very clear about the non-state actors and it has a unified policy against them. “There is no difference of opinion on this issue between the civil and military leadership,” he added. He said Pakistan’s enemies wanted to put blame on Pakistan for their failures. Nisar claimed that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif did not even know the name of Justice (retd) Aamer Raza Khan prior to the proposal of his appointment as head of the committee probing the controversy surrounding the planted story. “When we decided to appoint him as head of the committee, the PM didn’t even know his name. Now they say that he has relations with the Sharif family,” Nisar said. He said during the first meeting of the committee, Justice Raza had expressed serious concern over his appointment. - Express Tribune

The militant group also claimed responsibility for the last major attack in the province, at a police academy last month, that killed around 60 people. Shrines have often been targeted by militant groups. Wasim Akhtar granted pre-arrest bail KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) approved on Saturday the pre-arrest bail for Karachi’s elected mayor Wasim Akhtar in a hate speech case. ATC-I judge approved the bail plea which Akhtar had filed over fears he might be arrested following his release from jail. The court, however, asked the mayor to submit a surety bond of Rs25,000.
This is the 38th case that Akhtar has been granted bail in during the course of a year. A verdict on whether he may remain behind bars or be set free is awaited on November 16. Last week, an ATC reserved order on Akhtar’s bail plea in a case pertaining to facilitation of terrorists, paving way for the Karachi mayor’s release from jail on
November 16. The mayor had been alleged of involvement in the treatment of terrorists at the former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain’s Ziauddin Hospital. The court also approved bail in two cases pertaining to organising and listening to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founding chief Altaf Hussain’s ‘hate speech’. - Express Tribune

WORLD Hundreds of thousands rally in Seoul seeking Park’s exit

‘Russia bans ex-US envoy McFaul entry’
Immediately! Step down! Now!” protesters chanted a few hundred metres (yards) from South Korea’s presidential Blue House
SEOUL: South Korean President Park Geun-hye faced mounting pressure to step down on Saturday as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators marched in the capital to protest allegations that she let a friend meddle in state affairs. Saturday’s rally in downtown Seoul was the largest so far in a crisis engulfing Park, 64, and organisers said some 850,000 people packed streets running through the city centre including a 12-lane thoroughfare. Police estimated the crowd at 260,000. Students, families including young couples pushing strollers and protesters in wheelchairs were among the crowd during the peaceful march, which contrasted with the violence of some previous rallies dominated by militant unions and civic groups that clashed with police. One man travelled seven hours from the southern town of Gimhae to join the rally demanding Park step down a year before her mandate is due to end. “Park Geun-hye! Today! Step down! Immediately! hundred metres (yards) from the presidential Blue House. “I’m here so that this country will be a better place for my daughters,” said Park Min-hee, 34, a housewife who was at the rally with her two young daughters and her husband’s parents.”Park Geun-hye did wrong. She must step down right now.” It was the third weekend protest rally since Park’s first public apology on October 25 when she admitted she had sought the advice of her friend, Choi Soon-sil. Park’s acknowledgement only
served to fuel public anger and suspicion over the secret confidant, who apparently held no official government position. Another apology by Park and an offer to work with the parliamentary opposition to form a new cabinet and relinquish some power also failed to quell the crisis, prompting opponents to say she did not grasp its severity. Park has dismissed some of her most senior and closest advisers, and former aides have been arrested on charges of abuse of power. Choi, the friend who is believed
to have been acquainted with the president since the 1970s, has been charged with abuse of power and fraud. Members of main opposition parties joined Saturday’s rally, suggesting there is growing support in parliament for action to remove her from power, although there was no formal move yet to launch impeachment proceedings. No South Korean president has ever failed to finish their fiveyear term. Park’s approval rating has dropped to 5 per cent for a second
week, according to a poll conducted by Gallup Korea and released on Friday, the lowest number for a South Korean president since such polling began under democratically elected leaders in 1988. Gallup Korea, based in Seoul, is not affiliated with US-based Gallup, Inc, the American firm said. Park is the daughter of Park Chung-hee who took power in a 1961 military coup and ruled until he was assassinated by his disgruntled spy chief in 1979, five years after his wife was shot dead in the head by a killer who meant to shoot him. — Reuters
MOSCOW: Russia has banned Michael McFaul, a former US ambassador to Moscow under President Barack Obama, from entering the country, McFaul and Russian Foreign Ministry sources said. Russia has a travel ban in place on some US officials in retaliation for a US ban on Russian officials entering the United States. McFaul, US ambassador in Moscow from 2012-2014, said he had learnt of the ban when applying for a visa to Russia to help defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton prepare for what he thought would be her transition to the White House. “I have hundreds of friends in Russia. “I’m really sorry that these sanctions will make communicating with people harder,” McFaul wrote on social media on Saturday. In a separate earlier post, he described why he thought he had been sanctioned. George Kennan “(I) was told that I am the Kremlin’s sanctions list because of my close affiliation with Obama. I will take that as a compliment! The US sanctioned Russians close to (President Vladimir) Putin.” “To the best of my knowledge, George Kennan was the last US ambassador to USSR/Russia to be banned from travelling there.” Moscow declared Kennan persona non grata in 1952. — Reuters

ARRESTS OVER ANTI-TRUMP PROTEST

Turkey halts activities of 370 groups as purge widens ANKARA: Turkey has halted the activities of 370 non-governmental groups including human rights and children’s organisations over their alleged terrorist links, the government said as it widens purges following a failed coup in July. Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus defended the ban on the activities of the NGOs operating across the country, which was announced by the Interior Ministry late on Friday. “The organisations are not shut down, they are being suspended. There is strong evidence that they are linked to terrorist organisations,” Kurtulmus said. Different fronts “Turkey has to fight terrorism on so many different fronts. We are trying to clear the state institutions from Gulenists. At the same time we are fighting against Kurdish militants and Islamic
State (IS),” Kurtulmus told reporters on Saturday. More than 110,000 people have been sacked or suspended from their jobs and 37,000 arrested since the failed putsch for suspected links to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for the plot. He denies the accusations. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan calls the exiled cleric’s network the “Gulenist Terror Organisation” and says the unprecedented crackdown is crucial to rid state institutions of infiltrators seeking to topple the government. Of the 370 associations affected by Friday’s ban, 153 were allegedly linked to the Gulen movement, 190 to the Kurdish militant group PKK, 19 to the far-leftist militant group DHKP-C, and eight to IS, the interior ministry said. It added that investigations into the groups were continuing and pledged “de-
termination to fight all kinds of structures, groups and institutions with links to terror organisations.” Among the groups affected were bodies representing lawyers and the Union of Turkish Bar Associations vowed to “take a stand against any unlawful intervention on legal firms.” Without court rulings “It’s impossible for us to find the closure or activity cessation of organisations without court rulings democratic,” it added in a statement. The scale of the purges has alarmed Turkey’s Western allies and foreign investors. Human rights groups and opposition parties say Erdogan, who traces his political roots to a banned extremist party, is using the coup as a pretext to muzzle all dissent in the European Unioncandidate nation. — Reuters
4 Americans killed at NATO base A Taliban bomber managed to enter the heavily protected site, the largest US base, north of capital Kabul, in Afghanistan
KABUL: A Taliban suicide bomber dressed as a labourer blew himself up at the NATO air base at Bagram north of the Afghan capital Kabul on Saturday, killing four Americans and wounding at least 17 people, officials said.
Two US military service members and two US contractors were killed, and 16 other US service members were wounded, along with a Polish soldier who was part of the NATO mission, US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement. Not be deterred “For those who carried out this attack, my message is simple. We will not be deterred in our mission to protect our homeland and help Afghanistan secure its own future,” Carter said. He said the military will investigate what happened to determine what steps could be taken to improve protection for the base. The attack, which was claimed by the Taliban, underlines the foreign policy challenge that will face US President-elect Donald Trump
when he takes office in January. President Barack Obama had originally hoped to have all US forces out of the country by the end of his term, but was forced to abandon that goal as Afghan forces struggled to contain the Taliban insurgency. Under current plans, 8,400 US troops will remain as part of the Resolute Support operation and a separate US counterterrorism mission after Obama decided to slow down a planned reduction of the force, leaving it to his successor to decide future strategy. Waheed Sediqqi, spokesman for the Parwan provincial governor, said the bomber managed to enter the heavily protected site, the largest US base in Afghanistan, and was standing in a queue with Afghan labourers when he detonated a suicide vest.
The NATO-led Resolute Support mission response teams at the airfield were treating the wounded and investigating the incident. German consulate attack It follows a suicide attack on the German consulate in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif late on Thursday night that killed four people and wounded more than 100 others. That attack was retaliation for air strikes near the northern city of Kunduz last week which killed more than 30 civilians. The Taliban’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said Saturday’s attack, which he said had been planned for four months, had caused heavy casualties, killing 23 Americans and wounding 44. The movement often exaggerates the number of casualties caused by its operations. — Reuters

One major casualty of Donald Trump’s victory in the bruising US presidential election is, without a doubt, America’s soft power around the world. For many people, Donald Trump’s surprise election victory was a jolt to very idea that humans are rational creatures. It tore away the comfort of believing that science has rendered our world predictable. The upset led two New York Times reporters to question whether data science could be trusted in medicine and business.

READERS’ FORUM Mentality of drivers need to be trained This refers to the report‚ Calls for safety upgrade of Ibri-Fahud road (November 11). There is a need to teach people how to drive properly. Honestly you see such a change in people the minute they get behind the wheel of a car in Oman they are either on there phone and have no clue about how fast an accident can happen or turn into maniacs needing to race ahead. Change the mentality and also regulate driving instructors as they are culprits also. —Andrew Rumford , via Facebook Scan this QR code to send letters to the Readers’ Forum, containing not more than 200 words with full name, address and telephone number, may be sent by e-mail (akhtar@ timesofoman.com).

Donald Trump’s big win might seem a big loss for China. After spending much of his campaign calling China a cheater that steals American jobs, Trump’s election almost certainly means Washington will take a much harder line over trade, the Chinese currency and other contentious economic issues.

The secret of Dubai’s success A
s governments across the Middle East try to wean themselves off natural resources and build diversified, resilient economies, they should take some lessons from Dubai. It’s a remarkable story. In less than a generation, Dubai has transformed itself into a major centre for investment, commerce, and high-end culture. Although the 2008 global financial crisis hit the city-state hard (owing to its exposure to inflated real-estate assets), it recovered quickly, as evidenced by its bids for events such as the World Expo 2020. How Dubai managed not only to survive, but to thrive, in the wake of the crisis warrants closer scrutiny. So, this past summer, I began investigating the so-called Dubai model of resilient growth, and the challenges that may lie ahead for it. As part of my research, I conducted more than 40 indepth interviews with government officials and business elites, and fleshed out my findings with secondary data sources. Dubai’s growth and resilience is attributable to its “ABS model” of attraction, branding, and stateled development. Just as a car’s anti-lock braking system prevents it from skidding out of control in dangerous situations, Dubai’s three-prong strategy keeps its development agenda on track, even during economic crises. With respect to state-led development, Dubai’s approach is typical of Gulf states. Its society adheres to tribal traditions that afford its ruling elite, headed by the royal family, a paternal and omnipotent role in determining the direction and form of economic development. This means that “Dubai, Inc.” can quickly and seamlessly adapt to changing economic circumstances. Dubai is sometimes called the Singapore of the Desert, because, like Singapore, it has experienced enormous state-directed economic growth, and benefits from proactive, visionary leadership that has turned a small city-state with limited natural resources into an important international entrepôt. Moreover, Dubai has done a good job of branding itself to attract the foreign investment and labour needed to achieve its growth ambitions. Like New York, Shanghai, and Las Vegas, which have all enhanced their images through architecture, Dubai conveys its innovation-oriented identity through its cityscape and skyline, which has around 150 skyscrapers, more than any
other city except New York and Hong Kong. Dubai also has the first 3D-printed office building, stunning manmade islands, the world’s only (self-proclaimed) “seven-star hotel,” shopping malls combined with aquariums, indoor skiing, and skydiving facilities, and an array of iconic buildings and amusement parks. It also hosts the world’s most expensive horseraces and other lavish sporting events. Dubai’s brand is further strengthened by its political stability, safety, tolerance, cultural diversity, and high standard of living, which are a draw for skilled expatriates from around the world. Moreover, the emirate appeals to foreign investors with special economic zones that few other states can match. Two billion people live within a four-hour flight radius of Dubai, so it is unsurprising that it has emerged as a compelling location for visitors and investors alike. As one businesswoman I interviewed put it, “Dubai has all the ingredients of an extremely popular attraction for investors and tourists from around the world,” with “a substantial number of Arab youth aspiring to come and live the ‘Dubai Dream.’” Dubai has complemented its competitive advantage in attracting high-skill workers and investment with labour policies that also bring in lower-skill foreign workers to power its growth engine. But reliance on foreign workers could run into structural problems down the road. While firms can quickly shed workers during hard times, this then results in labour shortages when conditions improve. Higher-skill workers, in particular, take much longer to attract than to let go. Another risk is that, while the emirate has enjoyed a long period of political and economic stability, a significant regional upheaval could cause foreign workers, whatever their skill level, to take flight, regardless of the promise of high salaries and an attractive lifestyle. Dubai’s reliance on foreign labour thus threatens its long-term economic capacity to withstand future shocks. Aware of these potential risks, Dubai’s leadership has just approved a comprehensive plan to overhaul education aimed at developing indigenous human capital. - Project Syndicate

Awareness Matters Story Dr Muhammad Muneer
As we celebrate World Diabetes Day tomorrow (November 14), it is important to know the dangers of living with undiagnosed diabetes. This year the theme is ‘Eyes on Diabetes’ and it raises awareness on timely screening to ensure early diagnosis of Type-2 diabetes.
A
s per the International Diabetic Federation statistics, currently there are around 415 million adults and over half a million children having diabetes. There are still millions who are left undiagnosed, an alarming data that tells that they will end up in complications at future diagnosis. At present the world is witnessing a pandemic outbreak of diabetes and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is no exception. In this region there are over 35 million adults within age 20-79 years who are living with diabetes, which means almost 10 per cent of population are having the disease. There are over sixty thousand children suffering from Type-1 diabetes in this region and ten thousand children are newly diagnosed each year. In 2015, 342,000 people died of diabetes. Prevalence of diabetes is highest among 50-79 age group and it ranges from 18-23 per cent and at all ages females are more prevalent than men. Diabetes is a systemic disorder which affects almost all systems of our body, thus affecting our eyes, kidney, and nerves. All these complications can be prevented or reduced to a great extent with few simple intervention.. 1. Screening high risk group: Type-2 diabetes is family linked, so when parents and siblings are affected, then all members should regularly monitor their glucose. Family members having diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, history of high sugar during pregnancy, history of giving birth to large baby, and irregular menstrual period are few important risk factors and those who are having at least one or more, fall in the high risk group. These high risk groups should be screened and if found normal then one should annually monitor. 2. After diagnosis: Patients with diabetes initially are very reluctant to initiate treatment. If a person is found to have borderline or mild increase of sugar then intensive lifestyle modifications would help revert the high sugar to normal one in a significant number of the cases. 3. Regular follow-up: Diabetes is a lifelong disease. Regular follow-up helps to identify complications at an earlier stage and prompt intervention can delay or revert the complications. In several cases of Type-2 diabetes there are some complications. Some patients visit the doctor with visual problem, burning, and pin and needle feeling in the foot mostly at night, fatigue and lack of energy, skin and soft-tissue infection, loss of libido and more. These show that diabetes had already set in earlier and now complications have started. In Type-2 diabetes most of the cases show no symptoms. 4. Risk stratification: Studies showed that up to 80 per cent diabetes patients end up with heart attack and diabetes patients live 5-10 years less than normal population. Diabetes is equivalent to coronary heart disease in terms of life risk. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are closely related and in most cases they exist together. So along with diabetes control all these risk factors should be addressed to reduce complications. 5. Interlink among complications: Having one form of complication can direct the beginning or presence of other complications. As for example, the presence of diabetic eye disease is associated with an increased risk of other diabetic kidney disease and cardiovascular diseases. Diabetic foot ulcer patients mostly have heart disease as well. So it is important to know the history of diabetes to address its complications. HEALTHY DIET FOR DIABETES
D
iet and exercise is very important in the management of diabetes. A completely different diet is not needed for a diabetic. The nutrient requirement for a diabetic is same as that of a normal person. But a diabetic has to reduce the intake of certain food stuff in order to reduce the sugar level in blood. The calorie intake should help the individual to lose or gain weight as required. It is always better for a diabetic to maintain the body weight 10 per cent lower than the ideal body weight. If the disease is mild a diet restricted in calories and devoid of refined sugars such as sweets, jams, and jellies is adequate. It is better for a diabetic to have calorie intake less than a normal individual. A diabetic should derive 60-65% of calories from carbohydrates, 1520% from protein, and 15- 25% from fat.

Carbohydrates Diabetics should be careful while choosing the type of carbohydrate food. Cereals and pulses are complex carbohydrates that have to be broken down to simple sugars before they are absorbed from gut. Whole wheat is better than rice because of greater fibre content. But refined carbohydrates like sugar, honey, jaggery, and jam, contain simple sugars which are directly absorbed. Diabetics should restrict the intake of these foods. Fruits and milk contain sugars which raise the blood sugar in a slow rate. Diabetics can take them in limited quantity. The total amount of carbohydrates should be divided into 4-5 equal parts. One third (33%) should be served during lunch and one third during dinner. Of the remaining 25% should be served dur-

ing breakfast and 9% during evening tea or bedtime. Protein Diabetics should derive more protein from vegetable sources than animal protein as they contain more fibre and less cholesterol. Fat High fat diet increase body weight, serum lipid level, and adversely affect diabetes. So a diabetic should be careful with the amount and nature of fat they consume. There are commonly three types of fats. Ghee, butter, vanaspathi, and coconut oil contain high amount of saturated fats which increase serum cholesterol. They should be taken only in small quantities. Vegetable fats like sunflower oil, safflower oil contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are considered good for health. Monounsaturated fatty acids present in groundnut, palm oil, and olive oil are not harmful to the body. All these are considered as visible fats. Apart from these, foods like cereals, pulses, milk and milk products, egg, flesh foods, and nuts contain invisible fats. Fats from vegetable sources are better than those from animal sources. Non vegetarians can consume fish or chicken without skin instead of egg, mutton, liver, and brain which are high in cholesterol. Fatty acids in fish are helpful for body. Diabetes can take 20g visible fat based on their serum lipid levels. Dietary fibre Soluble fibre present in vegetables, fruits, and legumes are more effective in controlling blood glucose and serum lipids than insoluble fibre present in cereals and millets. In addition to soluble fibre, vegetables, fruits, and leg-
umes also provide anti oxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. Dietary fibre is also beneficial in the prevention of heart diseases and colon cancer. High fibre foods have low calorific value and low glycaemic index and they improve glucose tolerance. Excess dietary fibre may interfere with mineral absorption and may initially cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as flatulence and diarrhoea in few. It is better that diabetics take 40g dietary fibre per day. Fruits Fructose is the main sugar in fruits and they can be consumed by diabetics in moderate amounts. Fruits are also rich in anti oxidants and soluble fibre. Partially ripe fruits are better than fruit juices. Fibre rich fruits like guava, amla, papaya, pomegranate, and apple are preferred than fruits such as banana, mango, and custard apple. Musk melon and water melon have high water content and consumption of such fruits provide satiety without adding calories. Fenugreek seeds Fenugreek seeds that contain high fibre are useful for diabetics. It contains an alkaloid trigonelline which helps to reduce blood sugar level. Fenugreek also lowers the levels of serum lipids such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Diabetes can be kept under control by making certain changes in lifestyle. Diabetics should take care of his food intake. Exercise should be made a part of life. Diabetics should avoid alcohol. Along with this, use of prescribed medicines help them to keep diabetes under check. — lifestyle@timesofoman.com Jishy Seby, is diet consultant, at KIMS Oman Hospital.

Payment delays still adversely affecting contracting companies Oman Society of Contractors has been discussing with the ministry of finance for smoothening the payment process
A E JAMES
businesseditor@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Payment delays of completed projects are still adversely affecting contracting companies, with a severe hit on the cash flow and liquidity of the entire sector. “Many companies were not paid
for at least six months. The delay in payments is becoming longer (six months can be an average). We are discussing with the Ministry of Finance. The ministry is working hard to make those payments as far as possible in view of present economic conditions,” Shahswar Al Balushi, chief executive officer of Oman Society of Contractors (OSC), told Times of Oman. “When the main contractor is not getting paid, the sub-contractors and vendors will not get payment. The effect is impacting the whole market,” Al Balushi said, adding; “This is really difficult for many companies to manage (liquidity).” “But the Ministry of Finance is working to smoothen the process,” noted the chief of OSC – the representative body of contacting firms, which has 150 companies as members. The budget constraints have affected timely payment by the Ministry of Finance for completed
BASEL 3 NORMS
Oman banks urged to strengthen their non-volatile sources of funds A E JAMES
businesseditor@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman’s central bank has asked commercial banks to strengthen its non-volatile sources of funding in line with Basel 3 norms in an attempt to avoid risk arising from hardening interest rates at times of instability in financial markets. In a guideline to commercial banks, the apex bank said that banks’ liquidity coverage ratio (LCR), which became effective in January 2015, has to be a minimum ratio of 60 per cent, and has to be increased by 10 per cent every year thereafter till it reaches a minimum of 100 per cent by 2019. This ratio, which is an important part of Basel norms, determines how much liquidity assets banks have to maintain and is calculated after giving different weightages to various types of deposits held by banks. Deposits from corporates, which are of highly volatile in nature, are given less or zero weightage, while retail deposits (which are generally less volatile) are considered as strong components in calculating LCR. The liquidity coverage ratio is calculated by dividing highly liquid deposits with net cash outflows over the next 30 days,
which helps in overcoming stress tests among banks. This will contribute to financial stability by enhancing the ability of banks to withstand periods of economic and financial stress. The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) guideline to banks also said that the standard for net stable funding ratio (NSFR) has to be minimum ratio of 100 per cent and will become effective from January 1 2018. This is also in line with the guidelines issues by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (Basel 3). This ratio ensures that longterm assets of banks are funded by long-term and stable funding sources. Sometimes banks offer long-term loans with short-term deposits, in an attempt to get good margins, which may lead to asset-liability mismatch. In fact, the central bank’s measures are expected to affect the profitability of Omani banks as long-term funding cost is relatively on the higher side. “It is also a challenge for banks to get sufficient long-term deposits. The capital and financial markets in Oman is still in developing phase. There are only limited ways in which banks can get longterm funds – term papers, private placement and bonds,” said a senior banker, who does not want to be named.

Al Hassan incurs loss of OMR6.78 m Times News Service MUSCAT: Al Hassan Engineering Co said that the company has incurred a net loss of OMR6.78 million for the first nine months (January-September) of 2016, against a net loss of OMR1.19 million for the same period of 2015. The company’s contract and other income stood lower at OMR69.71 million during
January-September of 2016 against OMR79.33 million for the same period, according to a disclosure statement posted on MSM website. Expenses of the company stood lower at OMR76.50 million for the first nine months of 2016, against OMR80.61 million for the same period of last year. projects and the Oman Society of Contractors has been discussing with the ministry for smoothening the payment process. Oman’s budget deficit Oman’s budget deficit for the first eight months (January-August) of 2016 surged ahead by 63 per cent to OMR4,371.6 million, as plunging crude oil export revenues started affecting the government’s fiscal balance. Al Balushi said that earlier contracting firms had several projects on hand and the interim (preliminary) payment was smooth. “Interim payments and credit facilities from banks used to cover cash flow issues earlier. The problem in the past was in finalising accounts,” he added. “Today, the problem is also in interim payments – periodic payments are not coming,” noted Al Balushi. Al Balushi also said that there is
Oman Society of Contractors moots ‘I-Owe-You’ notes A E JAMES businesseditor@timesofoman.com
MUSCAT: Oman Society of Contractors has suggested the concept of a bond-like instrument called IOU (I-OweYou) to pay outstanding bills of contracting firms by the government, on the lines of a recent Saudi proposal. As payment from the state, contractors would receive bond-like instruments which they could hold until maturity or sell on to banks. “We are trying to negotiate
the concept of IOU again with the Ministry of Finance. But it is still under discussion,” said Shahswar Al Balushi, CEO of OSC. However, he said, the ministry is making cash payments. “That is limited due to fund available for payment on a monthly or periodic basis.” “An IOU will help companies to get credit from banks. At the moment, the Ministry of Finance has not given a clear picture whether this can be done or not,” Al Balushi further added.
a reduction in number of tendered projects due to prioritisation policy of the government due to financial constraints. “We have seen it last year.” Also, contracting firms are now in the process of completing several projects and once these projects are delivered, there will be a drop in work. Further, the crude oil price has not yet moved up extensively to make a change. “If it remains at this rate between $40 and $50 per barrel in 2017, definitely we will see an impact.” However, with the ongoing focus on diversification programme, the country will be able to offset some of the shortfalls in construction activity. Al Balushi added that in case of an improvement in facilitation of investment processes and procedures, it will expedite foreign investment. “This might help the construction companies to find an alternative,” he added.

Kenneth Cole to shut down stores NEW YORK: Kenneth Cole Productions, a fashion house and shoe company founded more than three decades ago, is closing almost all its stores, effectively ending its run as a United States brick-and-mortar chain. The New York-based retailer will shutter its 63 outlet stores over the next six months, chief executive officer Marc Schneider has said in an e-mail. That leaves Kenneth Cole with just two full-
priced stores in the US following an earlier paring of those locations. The company will be focusing efforts on its e-commerce site and international business, Schneider said. Kenneth Cole also will continue to sell merchandise through other retailers. Retailers — both healthy and distressed — have been shrinking and shutting down stores as more spending moves online. Kenneth
Cole opened its first store in 1984 on New York’s Upper West Side, two years after its eponymous founder created the brand. Kenneth Cole, who serves as chairman and chief creative officer, took the firm private in 2012 after years in the public markets. Kenneth Cole’s outlet shops have faced increasing competition from rivals such as Coach and Michael Kors Holdings. - Bloomberg News

Cowen: Given slow middleclass wage growth, it’s a common claim that American politicians oversold the benefits of trade deals to their voters. I take the contrarian view that the benefits of trade deals are more typically underappreciated. The key point is that America’s longer-term future depends on a world that is relatively free and prosperous. The last few decades have been the best for mankind in all of history. For the most part, peace has increased, severe poverty has declined and wealth and life expectancy have gone up for most of the world. At such a macro level it is hard to pinpoint the causal role of trade deals in particular, but a relatively free world trading order has been a big part of this process. For both practical and symbolic reasons, we should do everything possible to sustain and extend those institutions. Consider economic growth in China. It was admitted to the World Trade Organisation in 2001, and earlier Deng Xiaoping derived the inspiration for his reforms from Singapore, a free-trading nation. Americans will regularly benefit from the innovations coming from China, just as the British benefited from American innovations during the 19th century.QuickTake Free Trade Feud Or why has Latin America turned from a region of autocrats to having plenty of vigorous democracies? It is very likely that participation in a broader global economic order has played a key role. I understand full well that such indirect chains of causation, involving foreign nations, are difficult for American politicians to articulate to voters. They are true nonetheless, and these dynamic benefit s are what will go down in the history books.
Cowen: It’s not always so easy to choose a “little less” free trade. Take the integration of China into the global economic order. That was achieved in part by China’s entry into the WTO, which showed the Chinese leadership that world markets would indeed stay open if China liberalised and tried to compete. It worked. But that’s not a process the US government can or should control, rather it was governed by a treaty. We need such treaties precisely because so many governments have their reasons for wanting a “little less” free trade, and then the final result is a lot less free trade. Even without a treaty constraint, do you trust the American system of government to serve up the right marginal adjustments to free trade? I don’t. This is the same government that makes protection for farmers and intellectual-property holders a priority in its trade negotiations. So when it comes to trade, again I say full steam ahead. Sometimes there may be overshooting from a domestic point of view, but the alternative is a lot of reasons never to move away from excess protectionism.
DEBATING FREE TRADE AND THE POPULIST BACKLASH
The benefits of free trade have been a cornerstone of economic thought for decades. Recently, though, trade agreements have become the target of a populist backlash, with opposition to trade deals emerging as a key issue in the presidential race. At the same time, new research suggests that trade led to lower wages and higher unemployment for some Americans, particularly middle-class manufacturing workers. We asked Bloomberg View columnists Tyler Cowen and Noah Smith to meet online to debate the pros and cons of trade.
TYLER COWEN & NOAH SMITH Bloomberg View columnists Tyler Cowen and Noah Smith debate the pros and cons of trade
Smith: I agree about the overall benefits of trade. In China, particularly, there’s a very stark difference —it went from very little foreign trade to a whole lot, and it’s become much more prosperous. Everyone agrees trade was essential to its economic miracle. And likewise, if the U.S. were to shut itself off to trade, it would be a total economic disaster. But economists are trained to think not in terms of overall benefits, but marginal benefits. The question is whether a little bit less free trade might have been better. And it’s here that I think economists have done too much one-way cheerleading and not enough thoughtful discussion of the costs versus the benefits. We know trade can disrupt people’s whole careers and lives. We know it can cause inequality. These aren’t controversial statements in the econ world, and yet economists largely ignored and waved away these issues for decades when talking to the public. Now, as recent research from David Autor and others has shown, we’re paying the price. Trade with China hurt a lot of US workers in the 2000s — it cut off their careers and shunted them permanently into lower-paying jobs or onto the welfare rolls. If the US had been just a little more restrictive in the amount and the kinds of trade we had allowed with China, maybe we could have protected some of those Americans from getting hurt.
Smith: I’m advocating for more-nuanced and realistic rhetoric from economists. I say they shouldn’t just talk about the potential benefits of free trade, but also the potential costs. It seems like you’re saying that if economists are honest and nuanced, the result will be a hopeless mishmash of government pork, inefficient regulations and instinctive protectionism — but that if economists simplify their message and present only one side of reality, government will end up doing mostly OK. I’m sympathetic to the view that economists should take politics more into account when giving advice. But in this case, what seems to have happened is that econ has lost a lot of legitimacy by doing this. People know that trade has big potential costs, and now, thanks to Autor and other researchers, it’s becoming clear that economists knew this as well. So I think a lot of people feel like economists hoodwinked them. That reduces the profession’s credibility with the public, and in the long term leads to people ignoring economists and going with things like Donald Trump. If you ask people why they don’t trust economists, the 2008 financial crisis and free trade will probably be the two things they mention.
Smith: Let’s talk about these “dynamic international properties.” When you talk about Latin America, you imply that trade produces good government. Why haven’t we seen that in China, which has arguably benefited the most from trade agreements? The country seems to have become steadily more repressive since it joined the WTO in 2001. In fact, according to the think tank Freedom House, freedom in the world has been on the decline for 10 years. Why isn’t trade working its supposed magic here? In any case, with these big overall trends, it’s difficult to separate correlation and causation. Anyway, you say economists should tell the truth. Well, the truth is that even the most basic theories say that free trade can have big costs for whole swaths of society. And recent evidence shows that many Americans in fact paid those costs after the “China shock.” If economists are going to tell the truth, I don’t see how they can leave those important truths out of the equation.
Cowen: I think we economists should tell the truth, not present overly simplified statements. And in my view the truth is that free trade has been overall better than what we economists had thought. We hadn’t understood or emphasized its dynamic international properties as we should have. And WTO entry has turned out to be very good for China, though at the time many observers wondered whether the country really could stick to the regime. That’s the true and nuanced view, and the benefits many economists missed turned out to be more important than the costs that were missed. You are correct to suggest the public does not always trust economists. The public also does not always trust the smarter politicians or the better media sources. We economists should try to communicate as accurately and effectively as possible. But winning the trust of the public is not the final standard here.
Cowen: Most of the decline in freedom in China has come in the last few years, when economic growth and foreign trade rates also have been falling. You mention that freedom in the world is down in the last 10 years, but note world trade takes a steep dip almost 10 years ago. I’m not suggesting we understand the cause and effect story here, but the overall pattern fits the standard neoliberal intuition, namely that international trade and freedom go together. That’s been the general connection for most of the past few centuries. I agree that trade with China has lowered and held down some middle-class American wages, and in fact I warned of this myself, even before the research of David Autor, as did many other economists. But Noah, you are my Exhibit A for my claim that many economists are still undervaluing the benefits of trade. You’ve written on losers from globalization, but not sufficiently stressed the point that tariffs are an especially regressive tax. They tend to be applied to food and clothing, which the poor spend a disproportionate share of their income on. A lot of the poor also have service jobs that aren’t hurt so much by trade with lower-wage nations. In other words, free trade is (usually) a good antipoverty remedy.
Smith: It would be odd if continuous increases in free trade are necessary to maintain levels of democracy. If that’s true, then free trade eventually hits a ceiling and democracy starts to backslide. If the governmental benefit from free trade is that ephemeral, it should probably be a minor long-term factor in our costbenefit analysis. As for my own writings, I’ve written in support of the TransPacific Partnership, and pointed out that free trade with other developed countries has few if any downside. I’ve highlighted work showing the potential downsides of trade precisely because I don’t want the public to think economists are monolithic on this subject. Regarding policies to mitigate the impact of big trade shocks, I would try export subsidies before I’d try tariffs. But that is a discussion for another day. — Bloomberg News

that will certainly appeal to safetyconscious customers
MUSCAT: The Ford Edge – the stylish vehicle from Ford is allnew from every angle. The 2016 Edge has been reimagined with a stronger, more athletic shape. It has been retooled to meet higher expectations for quality, and reengineered to add more features and technologies for a more rewarding driving experience, says a press release. Ford Motor Company is leading the way in developing new safety technologies for millions of customers. Edge is equipped with technologies that will certainly appeal to safety-conscious customers. Like all Ford vehicles the Edge too bears Ford’s hallmark safety advancements that make it an ideal vehicle to own. These include Torque Vectoring Control, Roll Stability Control (RSC) with Curve Control, Lane-keeping system and more. Torque Vectoring Control delivers the effect of a limited-slip front differential without the com-
plexity and additional weight. In cornering situations, the system automatically applies the brake on the inside front wheel, delivering more torque to the outside front wheel. The benefit is TVC helps balance torque delivery to help the vehicle track on the intended path, especially on wet or slippery surfaces, and helps reduce torque steer during acceleration. Roll Stability Control (RSC) with Curve Control is an electronic stability control system that helps the driver maintain vehicle stability in adverse driving situations or when making evasive manoeuvres on slippery pavement. The system monitors the vehicle’s cornering behaviour with steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensors, and automatically makes braking and throttle adjustments to help maintain control whenever it detects wheelslip, understeer, or roll motion using ABS and traction
control components. The system activates whenever the vehicle is started, but may be turned off for certain situations such as when ‘rocking’ a vehicle stuck in mud. The benefits are that Roll Stability Control with Curve Control helps the driver maintain vehicle control in adverse driving situations or when making evasive maneuvers on slippery pavement to add stability and confidence to a variety of driving situations. Lane-keeping system includes two key components – Lanekeeping Alert and Lane-keeping Aid. The system uses a forwardlooking camera to identify road lane markings and to track the lane in which the vehicle is currently travelling and is automatically disabled below 64 kilometres per hour or when using turn signal so it does not interfere with stop-and-go around town driving. The benefit is this system is
designed to work in both daytime and nighttime conditions, Lanekeeping System alerts the driver if the vehicle starts to drift out of the current lane above 64 kilometres without a turn signal on. System alerts or warnings consist of a series of steering wheel vibrations that mimic a rumble strip. If the unintended lane departure is not corrected by the driver the aid function of the system actively applies steering torque to help the driver direct the car back toward the centre of the current lane. Enhanced driver confidence and occupant safety are key benefits from the Lane-keeping System. In Oman the 2016 Edge is available in four trim levels. These include SE, SEL, Titanium, Sport and for the first time Titanium series to meet market demand for more premium offerings. The all-new Edge will feature three engine options, two of which are new powerplants– A standard normally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 engine, a twin-scroll 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6. All will be equipped with dual exhaust. All three engines are paired to Ford’s SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission with paddleshift activation. Drivers will have the ability to manually select gears via race-inspired paddles on the steering wheel. The paddle-shift system is standard on all models. In Oman, Ford vehicles are brought to you by Arabian Car Marketing Co.

MUSCAT: His Highness Sayyid Malik bin Shihab bin Tariq Al Said will preside over the 46th His Majesty’s Cup hockey draw on Sunday. This was announced by the OHA Chairman Talib Khamis Al Wahaibi, who also stated that the draw ceremony for the tournament will be held at the Grand Hyatt at 6.00 p.m. Ten teams — Ahli-Sidab Club, Al Nasr Club, Bausher Club, Dhofar Club, Al Ittihad Club, Salalah Club, Seeb Club, Saham Club, Sohar Club and Quriyat Club — are in fray for the prestigious annual pennant. In the 45th edition last year, Ahli-Sidab scored a goal in each half to edge archrivals Seeb 2-1 to lift the cup.
out a strategy to revive the game to the glorious past
T.K. MOHANDOSS
sportseditor@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Dwindling interest has been a major concern for hockey in Sultanate of Oman and resurrecting the fortunes of the game is the prime agenda for the newly-elected Oman Hockey Association (OHA) Chairman Talib Khamis Al Wahaibi. The OHA chief, a man of discipline and determination, has already drawn out a strategy to revive the game to the glorious past. Speaking to Times Sport in an exclusive interview, Talib Al Wahaibi (more fondly called Captain Talib for having served as a sailor) said: “Maybe I have just taken over the responsibility as head of the OHA board, but I have already chalked out my vision and very soon will work towards turning it to reality.” A hockey player in his prime, Talib Al Wahaibi, stressed the need of luring young talents to develop the game and make it regain the popularity of the past. “My first goal will be to reach out to the schools of the country and introduce the students between fifth and ninth grades to the game of hockey,” he stressed.
AMBITIOUS PLANS: OHA’s new chief Talib Al Wahaibi
“The students will be nurtured, trained and provided with all facilities to hone their skills under the umbrella of sports clubs, which are available in all regions,” he added. “The need of the hour is young talents,” he opined. “I will make sure that the grassroots hockey will flourish once again so that we can build and provide strong pool of talents for the national cause.” “We must understand hockey is the only sport and the oldest too apart from football to organise the prestigious His Majesty’s Cup and
my aim is to work with determination to get back all the 24 clubs to the playing field,” he said, thanking His Majesty the Sultan for the continued patronage for the sport. Talib Al Wahaibi also thanked the previous board for the efforts they have done and “I will continue from where they have left.” Stressing the need of better coordination with the Ministry of Education, Talib Al Wahaibi said: “My outlook is to revive the age group competitions with participation of schools.”
He said that each school will be provided with equipments and the services of qualified coaches. “The clubs of the region can then adopt the school teams and enter the age group (U-16 and U-18) tournaments. I hope to expand to 30 clubs, who can compete in these tournaments.” OHA’s focus will also be on Buraimi Club, which has all the modern facilities for the game and “if schools around that region can be tapped it will be a shot in the arm,” he claimed.
‘None from Europe’ With Oman gearing up for the Hockey World League Round 2 and Asia Cup next year, OHA is certainly looking for a coach to fill in the void left by the German trainer Oliver Kurtz. However, the OHA chief said with authority that there is no looking into Europe for a replacement and the next coach will certainly be from the Asian continent, though not divulging from which country the next man will come. “I don’t want to name anyone,
but we are going to start the process of looking out for the new coach and I can assure you that we are not looking to Europe,” he said. Talib Al Wahaibi also hinted at more cooperation with top national associations. “I have started communicating with associations in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to express Oman’s interest of enhanced cooperation in hockey, which I am sure can grant more exposure for the national teams,” he explained. Expat, schools hockey Talib also spoke about his plans to involve expatriates and develop schools hockey across the country. “My plan is to involve all the expat communities in hockey. I want them to come into Oman hockey fold. “Besides our main national championships and league, I would like to have a tournament involving all the expatriates in Oman,” he said. “I would also like to have a schools tournament involving all the expatriate as well as Omani schools. This will help in creating interest and spreading the game across the country,” he added. Meanwhile, Talib Al Wahaibi said that communication with International Hockey Federation, Asian Hockey Federation and other continental federation will be further enhanced so that Oman Hockey’s presence will be felt worldwide. “I am also working on improving the presence of Oman Hockey on social media platforms and an official website will also be launched soon,” said Talib Al Wahaibi. All said and done with focus of the new OHA regime falling on unearthing young talents, the future augurs well for the game in the Sultanate.

India’s Batra becomes first non-European boss of FIH DUBAI: India’s Narinder Batra became the first non-European President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) after he was elected to the top post by an overwhelming margin during the penultimate day of the 45th FIH Congress, here on Saturday. Batra, who is the president of Hockey India, defeated David Bal-
birnie of Ireland and Australia’s Ken Read to become the 12th FIH President — the first Asian to grab the post in the world body’s 92-year-old history. Batra got 68 votes in his favour while Balbirnie and Read managed 29 and 13 votes respectively. Out of 118 voters, only 110 voted while eight abstained.
The voting was conducted via secret ballot through an electronic voting system. Each delegation head of a National Association was provided with a tablet and a unique password by which they voted for their choice. It has been learnt that Batra, who was the official candidate of Asian Hockey Federation, enjoyed
majority support from Asian, African and Central American nations during the voting process. Outgoing President Leandro Negre, with whom Batra shares a very cordial relationship, announced the result of the poll. Batra’s four-year tenure begins immediately, which means he will have to relinquish Hockey India
President’s post with immediate effect. He also is the first Indian to be elected as chief of an Olympic Sport’s international governing body. Batra’s win means the power centre of the sport will now move to Asia from Europe, which had been ruling international hockey for decades. The 59-year old Batra, who be-
came president of Hockey India in October 2014 after serving as its secretary, succeeds Spaniard Leandro Negre, who has been the FIH chief since 2008. Other Europeans to have headed the FIH in the past were Rene Frank, Etienne Glichitch, Juan Antonio Calzado, Els van Breda Vriesman besides Negre. - PTI

Petersen charged over match-fixing CAPE TOWN: Former South Africa test player Alviro Petersen has been charged with contriving to fix domestic Twenty20 matches last year, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Saturday. Petersen, who played 36 Tests between 2010 and 2015, has been provisionally suspended from all cricket activities by CSA’s AntiCorruption Unit. Petersen, 35, said this year that he had blown the whistle on a conspiracy to fix games in the 2015 season which has already led to bans for fellow former Proteas players Gulam Bodi (20 years) and Thami Tsolekile (12 years).
But he now faces a slew of charges, including “seeking to accept, accepting or agreeing to accept a bribe or reward to fix or contrive to fix or influence improperly a match or matches”. Alviro Petersen faces nine counts of failing to disclose approaches by suspected match fixers to Anti-Corruption officials and he also stands accused of hindering the investigation into the fixing syndicate. Petersen has spent the last two seasons playing for English County Lancashire, but has said he is unlikely to return in 2017 for family reasons. - Reuters

South Africa lead by 86 after Australia collapse HOBART: South Africa routed Australia for 85 and then weathered a batting crisis of their own before pushing to a lead of 86 runs after a bowler-dominated opening day of the second Test in Hobart on Saturday. Temba Bavuma, unbeaten on 38, and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock (28 not out) guided South Africa to 171 for five at stumps at Bellerive Oval, after paceman Mitchell Starc threatened to drag the hosts back into the game with a fiery spell after tea. On a gloomy, overcast morning, Proteas captain Faf du Plessis
won the toss and sent Australia in to bat on a green-tinged wicket moistened by drizzle. The call was a masterstroke as his fired-up pacemen, led by a five-wicket haul from Vernon Philander, bowled Australia out in just 32.5 overs, for their lowest total at home since a 76 against visiting West Indies in Perth in 1984. It was also the lowest total of any team at Bellerive Oval and well short of Australia’s previous nadir against the South Africans, a 111 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1994. - Reuters

Hamilton on pole SAO PAULO: Lewis Hamilton took pole position on Saturday for the Brazilian Grand Prix with Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg joining the triple Formula One world champion on the front row. The pole was the 60th of Hamilton’s career, eight short of Michael Schumacher’s record, and his first in Brazil since 2012 when he was at
McLaren. Rosberg will take his first title if he wins Sunday’s penultimate race of the season but Hamilton, 19 points adrift, showed he will do all he can to take the fight down to the wire in Abu Dhabi with another dominant qualifying display. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen qualified third with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen joining the 2007 world champion on the second row. - Reuters

Fatma finishes second in doubles competition of Morocco tournament
CHAMPIONS: The members of the Saudi Arabian team pose for a group photo after winning the 36th Arab Golf Championship at the Ghala
Golf Club on Saturday.
With overnight leader Yassine Touhami of Morocco withdrawing due to injury, Khalid Attieh and Othman Al Mullah went on to win fifth and second places to lead Saudi Arabia to overall championship title
MUSCAT: Outstanding performances by Khalid Attieh and Othman Al Mulla, coupled with pullout of overnight leader Yassine Touhami of Morocco, helped Saudi Arabia emerge the overall champions at the 36th Arab Golf Championship at the Ghala Golf
Club on Saturday. Going into the final day’s action, Yassine Touhami had a sure shot at the individual crown after having led on all three rounds. But unfortunately Yassine Touhami, who was 3-under par 213 after three rounds, had to pull

out with an injury, which also affected the Morocco’s position in the team standings. But all credit to Khalid Attieh and Othman Al Mulla who kept their cool to finish one-two, the former carding a fourth-round 69 for a total of 291 taking the top place and the latter totalling six over 294 after a 73 in the final round for the second place. The duo’s performance, coupled with joint sixth place finish of Saud Al Sharif (305), helped the Saudi Arabia to take the overall championship with a total score of 881. Morocco had to settle for second place with 903 while Qatar took the third place with 916 score. Egypt’s Issa Abou El Ela, who carded 75 on final day for a total of 295, took the third place in the individual category.
Azzan joint eighth Meanwhile, Oman’s top amateur Azzan Al Rumhy finished joint eighth with Morocco’s Mohammed Khallali. Both had indetical scores of 75 in the final and totalled 306 each. The other Omanis in action, Fahad Al Kitani (338), Ahmed Al Balushi (345) and Rashad Al Harthy (356) finished in the 40th, 42nd and 44th places respectively while the Sultanate squad finished in ninth place in the team standings. Dr Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhy, the Minister of Oil and Gas, presided over the final day’s proceedings and handed over the medals and trophies in the presence of Sheikh Fahim bun Sultan Al Qasimi, the chairman of the Arab Golf Federation, and Oman Golf Committee chief Mundhir Al Barwani and other officials.
MUSCAT: Oman’s tennis star Fatma Al Nabhani settled for a second place in the doubles competition of the $10,000 Casablanca ITF Pro Circuit tournament in Morocco on Friday. Fatma and her Spanish partner Olga Parres Azcoitia, who were given the second seeding in the tournament, came up against top seeded Romanians Daiana Negreanu and Oana Georgeta Simion and found the going tough. Though Fatma and Olga tried to match the Romanians they failed to stop their opponents from winning the match and the title with a 6-2, 6-1 scorline. Earlier in the singles competition, top seeded Fatma was beaten in the quarterfinals 6-3, 7-5
by Romanian fifth seed Cristina Adamescu. Fatma will now take part in the $10,000 ITF Pro Circuit tournament in Rabat from November 14 to 20.

Lorenzo smashes pole record CHESTE: Spain’s triple MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo will start his last race for Yamaha on pole position after demolishing the lap record in qualifying on Saturday for the Valencia season-ender. Lorenzo lapped the Ricardo Tormo circuit in one minute and 29.401 seconds, well inside his 2015 record of 1:30.011, with compatriot and fellow triple champion Marc Marquez the only rider close to him. Honda’s Marquez was still
three tenths of a second off Lorenzo’s pace, with Yamaha’s Italian great Valentino Rossi completing the front row of the starting grid in 1:30.128. Lorenzo is moving to Ducati next season with Spaniard Maverick Vinales replacing him. The Suzuki rider was fourth fastest on Saturday. Marquez’s teammate Dani Pedrosa qualified eighth, a month after the Spaniard broke his collarbone, leg and foot in a crash in Japan. - Reuters

Nitin, Suhail win pairs bridge title MUSCAT: Nitin Vaidya and Suhail Khan emerged the winners of the Pairs Bridge Tournament organised by Muscat Bridge League (MLB) here recently. The tournament, organised at Ruwi Hotel, attracted 30 players, including a number of all-ladies pairs. The event was played under full Howell format with each of the 15 pairs playing two boards against all the other pairs. Nitin and Suhail took the top honours with an excellent score of 76 percent. Seasoned pair of Gautam Mukherji and Ashok Sardiwal combined well to clinch second place with a score of 70 perent. The pair of Pei-Lee Wang and Roos Moes came third with a score of 64 percent and the all ladies pair of Neeta Khimji and Sadhana Gupta played extremely
well to take fourth with a score of 62 percent. The prize for the ladies pair went to Devyani and Rashmi while Asoke Das and SK Viswanath secured the consolation prize for being closest to 50 percent. Muscat Bridge league also bid adieu to one of its senior most player Gautam Mukherji, who is leaving Oman after a stint of 25 long years. Gautam leaves behind a legacy on the bridge scene in Oman. He has won various bridge competitions and has kept the torch of bridge alight in Oman by coordinating the regular weekly bridge activities and organising tournaments in the country. MUSCAT: Teenager Himesh Haridas stole the limelight on the final day of the Dalma Energysponsored Annual Badminton Tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC) and cosponsored by Oman United Insurance Company. Himesh won the men’s singles crown and the duo of VD Sajeev and Sanith Kalloth shared the limelight with victory to claim the men’s doubles title. Himesh Haridas was in a class of his own as he claimed the fourth title of the tournament with victory to capture the men’s singles title. In a thrilling and well-contested final, the talented 17-year-old put in a brilliant show of talent and determination to thwart the challenge of Prasad Kulkarni in two engrossing games 21-19, 23-21. It was worth the money for
the badminton enthusiasts who packed the ISC arena as Himesh and Prasad provided them with badminton of a high order. Prasad took the early lead but Himesh made some brilliant retrievals to rally from 6-9 down to 9-all. Prasad planned his moves against the younger and more energetic Himesh and handled every point on merit as scores went neck-andneck until 13-all. Brilliant rallies were a delight as Himesh used the flanks to gain an 18-15 lead. With calculated moves, Prasad levelled at 19-all. Himesh reached game point as Prasad’s next return went long to give Himesh the lead. Himesh took the early lead in the second game as Prasad rallied brilliantly from 5-9 down to level the score. At 12-all, Himesh opened up
and reeled the next five points on the trot. Prasad was equal to the task and got back to level at 18-all. The thrill and excitement was at its peak as Himesh was on the verge of victory at 20-18. The experienced Prasad not only saved two match points but went on to gain game point at 21-20 but failed to convert it. Himesh still had enough energy in him to force himself to the limit, gained a third match point and converted it to capture the men’s singles crown, his fourth title of the tournament. The unseeded duo of VD Sajeev and Sanith Kalloth showed tremendous belief in their capability and repaid the support they received from their supported with a splendid victory to lift the men’s doubles title. In the final, the underdogs defeated the fancied team
of PT Francis and Shabaz Nasar in straight games 26-24, 21-19. After winning a tight first game, Sajeev and Shanith maintained a slender lead in the second before Francis and Shabaz rallied to level at 19-all. Sajeev and Shanith showed brilliant reflexes and a strong defence and gained match point which they converted to record a brilliant victory to win the doubles title. Prizes were distributed by guests of honour Wilson George, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Indian Schools in Oman and Ajay Saraf, Corporate IT Head of Dalma Energy in the presence of Babu Said of Oman United Insurance, Dr. Sathish Nambiar, Chairman of ISC, CM Sardar, ViceChairman and other office bearers of the club.
