reji@timesofoman.com mobinmathew@timesofoman.com MUSCAT/THIRUVANATHAPURAM: “His daughter’s education and her getting a good job was his dream. He used to spend a lot on that. Without seeing that success, he has gone.” These were the words of Prakash Kesavan, elder brother of Indian expat cash

collector Satyan, who was murdered on Tuesday in what police believe was a robbery. Satyan, 50, was found by a flatmate sitting upright in a chair in his Muttrah apartment. His throat had been cut. The Royal Oman Police (ROP)said “early investigations” show that the “possible motive was robbery”. The ROP confirmed that two Bangladeshi nation-

als have been detained for questioning over the murder. Police officers detained Satyan’s six flatmates on Tuesday and released them on Wednesday morning. His wife Praseeda, back home in Kerala, India, collapsed when she heard the news and is now in hospital. Speaking from the family home to Times of Oman, elder brother Prakash and neighbours described the murder victim as “a gem” and “a good human being”. The couples’ only child, daughter Swati, has completed Btech and was attending coaching class to appear for Mtech entrance exam in Bangalore. She was returning to the family home in Thirumala, near Thiruvananthapuram,

yesterday. “When I opened the door of our flat, the floor was full of blood and I saw Satyan sitting in a chair with blood on his body,” his flatmate, who declined to be named, told the Times of Oman. “His eyes were open when I saw him and so I tried to call him two or three times, but he didn’t respond,” he added. “There were bloodstains on the walls inside the kitchen too. He was brutally harmed,” he added. Satyan, who was working as a foreman in a company in Oman, was found dead in Muttrah, near the Today Express Hypermarket, on Tuesday evening. According to sources, Satyan’s job was daily collection of cash. >A6

INSPECTIONS

Ministry praised for crackdown on mid-day break violators Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Social workers, companies and residents of Oman have appreciated the Ministry of Manpower’s initiatives to reduce the number of mid-day break violations. According to recent data from one of the ministry officials, only 170 companies were found violating the regulation out of the 1,376 inspections made between June 1 and July 10. Companies in the Sultanate have changed their work timings to provide a mid-day break to their workers. The ministry’s moves to control the violation have suc-

ceeded to a great extent, according to Mohammad Osama Rawat, a social worker in Oman. “If the authorities remain strict about the issue, then things will be much better in the coming years,” he said. “Still, they (outdoor workers) find it difficult to locate a prop-

er place to rest and many of them have been resting under trees and bushes; so the ministry should do something to control this misery,” Rawat added. “It clearly shows the initiatives of the Manpower Ministry are working and many companies are complying,” Tonia Gray, general manager of Competence HR told the Times of Oman. The mid-day break is in place to reduce the potential damaging effects to the health of outdoor workers from high temperatures, Gray explained. She also asked the public to report any violation if they found any through the hotline number.>A6

TARIQ ZIAD AL HAREMI

tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: An Oman Air flight departing from India was delayed on Tuesday night due to a bomb hoax. Oman Air flight WY216 was scheduled to fly from the Trivandrum Airport in Kerala, India to the Muscat International Airport at 8:30 pm local time on Tuesday, but was delayed owing to a security screening and search after airport management received information that a suspected package was on board. “Airport authorities received a call claiming that the Oman Air flight had a passenger on board in possession of a bomb,” said Usama Al Haremi, senior corporate communications and media manager, Oman Air. “The caller specifically named Oman Air, the flight number,

flight time, destination and the name of the passenger on board, which was very disturbing,” he added. Revealing details of the incident, Trivandrum Airport’s manager, the terminal manager and the police were available at the airport. The police disembarked the passengers and unloaded the luggage after which a bomb squad and K9 unit did a thorough search of the luggage, as well as checked the carry-on luggage, while individually frisking passengers. The passenger named by the hoaxer was detained by Indian authorities for further questioning. “The flight was delayed for 77 minutes and after the search was completed and no explosive package was found, the aircraft took off to its destination,” said Al Haremi.
