TO OPEN NEXT YEAR

Muscat airport work on the right track MUSCAT: Work at the Muscat International Airport is progressing well and the authorities are hoping to “open it early next year.” Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the launching ceremony for new non-stop flights between Kuwait and Muscat, a senior official of the Director General of Civil Aviation Regulations, Anwar bin Abdullah Al Raisi, said that the runway is open and so are all operational facilities. “Only the terminal building is left to be opened which, too, will happen soon,” he said. He also said that the deadline is

approaching soon. “We are near our deadline but initially, it was a big challenge,” he said. Admitting that there has been a delay, he said, “Yes, there is some delay as we were constructing five airports at the same time. We are now done with the Salalah International Airport and are focusing on the Muscat International Airport currently so that we can complete it very soon. It is towards this purpose that we are working round the clock,” he said. On the illegal expatriates caught working at the Muscat airport, the official said that the work has been affected slightly because of this. >A4

Hakeem Al Ojaili, Acting CEO of BankDhofar at the Saraya Bandar Jissah site near Qantab. Sheikh Hamood, CEO of Saraya Bandar Jissah, shared his thoughts at the signing ceremony, noting, “The agreement between Saraya Bandar Jissah, Bank Muscat and BankDhofar, is of great strategic importance. The pact with the two banks provides an ironclad guarantee to our customers that their properties will be delivered within the stipulated deadline irrespective of the market dynamics.” See also >A6

to be put into force after children died recently through adult neglect

FAHAD AL GHADANI

fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: After a number of shocking deaths of children due to adult neglect, top lawyers have called for new Child Law regulations to come into force urgently. In the most recent case, a fouryear-old girl was allegedly left unattended in a bus owned by a training centre and reportedly died of suffocation in Bid Bid. That followed an incident earlier in the year when two boys,

aged five and six, died after locking themselves in a car in Ibri when the parents of the boys were at home. The Child Law was adopted by the Sultanate of Oman in early 2014 but speaking to the Times of Oman, Ahmed Al Mukhaini, a senior lawyer, said, “The Child Law is not clear yet. I believe the implementing regulations are important. The Child Law regulations should identify violations of the act and consequent punishments.” Complaints “The Child Law as of now faces two challenges which currently prevent implementation of the child right protection. The first one is, of course, that Child Law is not ready to be applied in certain cases and the second one is the fact that people in our society do not come forward to complain,” said Al Mukhaini. He added that the Omani society is a reserved society where people invariably prefer to remain silent even when they witness such cases. >A6
