gautam@timesofoman.com haitham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Veteran coach Pim Verbeek has been appointed manager of the Oman National Football Team. The 60-year-old will take charge of the national team on January 1, 2017, having signed a two-year-deal with the Oman Football Association. The official announcement about the Dutch tactician’s appointment came at a press conference at the Seeb Football Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. “The goal is to once again ensure that Oman is on the forefront. This will be achieved by leading the team to compete in the Asian Football Cup 2019 and in the world cups in future. This is concurrent with the goals of the OFA, the team, and my own,” Verbeek told the media. Verbeek expressed his admiration for Oman’s national team, and praised the current setup for the resilience it showed in the face of superior opposition. ”During the time when I coached, Oman has been a tough opponent, something rare in Asian football,” he said. Though Verbeek only has until end of March for the first AFC Cup qualification game, he was confident of putting together the best selection of players in that short span. “I had six weeks with Australia before their first match, and we won against Qatar in that World Cup qualifier. My target is to have training camps and identify players’ strengths to ensure we make the best selection for the team,” Verbeek said. His achievements include managing South Korea’s and Australia’s national teams. >A6

Machines to speed up counting of votes in municipal elections HASAN SHABAN AL LAWATI

hassan@timesofoman.com

MUSCAT: A new state-of-theart machine will be used for the first time in Oman’s municipal council elections to count votes. “The new technology will help save time once the voting is over. We typically finish counting of the votes by 3 am but with this new technology, we will be able to finish before midnight as the machine will automatically count the votes,” a source at the Ministry of Interior said. This machine will be available at all the election locations and a voter will have to insert the paper with a tick marked next to his candidate’s name. The results will be announced

on the election day itself. The number of registered voters this year stood at 623,224, recording a whopping increase of around 100,000 from last elections. The official announced that Omanis living in the GCC will be able to vote through their embassies on December 18, while the official election day is December 25 for the rest of the voters.

Voters will get a day off on Sunday, December 25. Around 731 candidates will contest for 202 seats all across Oman, of whom 708 are males and only 22 females. The final results will be revealed and calculated live via the election website and the mobile app. The ministry has allocated 107 election centres across the Sultanate. The municipal councils’ term is four years. The electoral process strengthens the national development efforts being made by the government and plays a vital role in the efforts made by the Council of Oman. The Interior Ministry has also issued leaflets with detailed stepby-step instructions regarding the electronic voting system.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, official spokesperson for the public prosecution and head of its awareness committee, said it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Al Marzouqi said 118 children have been victims of sexual harassment in Oman this year, and experts suggest the real number may be higher than what has been reported. Al Marzouqi said such figures were released for the

first time in Oman, making it difficult to detect any increase or dip from last year. However, he said that some cases are not being reported to the public prosecution as they can take place at homes, schools or in neighbourhoods. “Experts do not see it as a phenomenon in Oman, but they agree that it is indeed an issue that needs to be highlighted,” he said. >A6
