The girl climbed inside the freezer and could not get back out after the door closed. The freezer was not switched on but police say the girl suffocated as her parents franti-
cally searched outside for her, unaware she was still inside the house, trapped inside the old, unused freezer. The tragic accident happened in Suwaiq. A Royal Oman Police spokesman said: “A girl died in a freezer in her house. She was four years old. She entered the freezer and got stuck inside and died. The freezer wasn’t working, and the girl died as a result of suffocating.” >A6

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Binu John, the wife of missing fuel station employee John Philip, has pleaded with Omani authorities to help find her missing husband. “Find my missing husband as early as possible. It is the fourth day now. I don’t have anything else to say. Please find my husband and return him safely,” Binu told Times of Oman over the phone from India. John Philip, an Indian fuel station employee at Sunaina near Ibri, some 217 kilometres from Muscat, has been missing since Friday night. According to John’s company officials, money between OMR4,000 and OMR5,000 is missing from the station, there were blood stains inside the office and CCTV cameras were damaged. John hails from the south Indian state of Kerala, and has been working in Oman for the

Jacob Philip, the brother of John, said that they all are worried about John’s whereabouts. “Binu is not having proper food. She is always in the prayer room. Children are not going to school. We are praying for his
safe return. We have approached the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Kerala government to find him as soon as possible,” Jacob said. “He is a good person. Some in Muscat are saying that he may have run away with money. He will never do that. He is a god fearing person. Why should he do that? He loves his family too much. He has never given an opportunity to anybody to say that
he is a bad person,” Jacob added. John’s eldest son is a Class XII student and younger daughter studies in Class V. Meanwhile, John’s friends in Oman said that they have not received any update from the police officials about the case. “The colleague who informed the police was taken into custody and was released on Monday. Other than that, there are no other updates,” John’s friends add-

Police are telling us that the probe is on. We are praying that nothing bad happens to him. He was a good person,” the manager added.

Storms likely to hit Oman next week REJIMON K
reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Storms are likely to hit Oman and Yemen later next week, global meteorology models indicate. According to a meteorologist at Accuweather.com, the Sultanate of Oman could experience showers and storms. “With some help from a major fluctuation in tropical weather, scattered showers and storms could return to Yemen and Oman
later next week. The exact timing is a bit uncertain, but it is likely to be around the 24th of this month at the earliest,” Jason Nicholls, a senior meteorologist at Accuweather.com said. “It is not a tropical cyclone bringing the threat of rain; it is somewhat an extension of the South West Monsoon expanding. Several models show chances of rain. However, models differ on timing. We are talking nearly two weeks out. It is very hard to nail
down details that far in advance,” Nicholls added. While Muscat is currently under the grip of a sweltering heat wave, residents in Salalah are enjoying cool weather. Last Sunday, the temperature in Muscat hovered at around 46 to 47 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in Suwaiq was 50 degrees Celsius. In many other places it hovered around 49 degrees Celsius. According to global meteorolo-
gists, temperatures have risen on an average by about 1.5°C above the pre-industrial average—a threshold that is being considered by international negotiators as the new goal for limiting warming. While an exceptionally strong El Niño weather phenomenon has provided a boost to temperatures in recent months, the primary driver has been the heat that has built up due to decades of unabated greenhouse gas emissions.

MUSCAT: Oman Air has suggested people to undertake a three-hour bus journey to Sohar from Muscat after suspending its flights to Sohar. The national carrier said passengers can take a Mwasalat bus to Sohar from the Muscat International Airport. The statement was issued after flight operations to and from the Sohar Airport were temporarily halted by Oman Air. “Mwasalat is operating more than eight daily bus services to and from Sohar, which connect our passengers with our domestic and international flights around the clock to and from the Muscat
International Airport. This shall provide alternative transport services to passengers to and from Sohar,” Oman Air said in a statement issued on Tuesday. Eight buses Ahmed bin Ali Al Balushi, chief executive officer (CEO) of Mwasalat said they are currently running eight buses to Sohar from Muscat. “While two buses drive directly to the Sohar Port, six buses connect with Sohar city,” he said, adding that there are no plans to increase the bus service now. Meanwhile, business people in Sohar said Oman Air’s halting the Sohar-Muscat flights would definitely have an impact on them. >A6
