ECONOMIC VIABILITY

Mining body to examine gold worth found in North Batinah MUSCAT: Reacting to the news that a company had found a large amount of gold in Oman, Hilal Al Busaidi, CEO of the Public Authority for Mining (PAM) said preliminary information gained from samples collected from the site reveals that it is not of much ‘economic value’. Talking to Al Shabiba, he said, “The PAM officials would contact the company to discuss the discovery of gold and determine the final commercial value of the element. We have yet to be sure of these discoveries and their commercial viability.” Al Busaidi was reacting to an interview in which David Archer, the chief executive of Savannah Resources told Proactive Investors that they were extracting copper in North Batinah Governorate when they accidentally struck gold.

“According to the law and contracts with the mining companies, the initial announcement of any mineral discovery should be done only through the PAM. Only after this procedure is followed, mining companies can make announcements of their discovery,” he said. He also said that the company should have referred it to the authority before making any announcements. Assurance Al Busaidi explained that the mining contract was for copper discovery by an Omani company and they had requested assistance from Savannah. Al Busaidi told Al Shabiba that he had given an assurance that the authority would initiate all steps for the benefit of the Sultanate if commercial quantities of gold ore were found. He said that the certificate for

discovery and prospecting is different from the one for mining, and the Omani company possessed the discovery and prospecting certificate. They are given priority in discovering large quantities of gold, and according to the terms of the contract given by the government, the company and government both receive a share. The only other gold mine was Rakah gold mine in the Yanqul region. It produced over 4.25 tonnes of gold in the 1990s. “According to the samples obtained by Savannah, around 60 grammes of high grade gold were discovered with 9.1 per cent zinc and 1 per cent copper,” he said. “When people talk about high grade gold discoveries these days, they mean about three to four grammes. In this case we are talking of double digits in the 18-gramme range,” said Archer.

MUSCAT: Omani students can now legally work part-time, under a new ministerial decision introduced this month which is aimed at protecting the rights of students. It was previously illegal for students to take up work unless they transferred their sponsorship to their employer. The new part-time work permit decree was issued along with the teenage work permit that allows those between 16 and 18 years of age to be employed only between 6am and 6pm with stringent guidelines. The ministerial decision was issued on April 30 and came into

effect the next day. However, this part-time work permission is restricted to citizens only. Expatriates “It would have been better if expatriates were also allowed to work part-time,” said Rashid Khalfan, the owner of construction company. Tonia Gray, general manager, Competence HR, said, “As a mother of students over the age of 16, I would have liked to see this extended to expatriates, as I am a great believer in youngsters gaining experience and taking some responsibility. However, I do understand that this opportunity

Grab the chance “It is very common in most parts of the world for students to work for a maximum number of hours per week and during certain hours, and the government has covered this well. I am unsure as to the restrictions on the type of companies that students can work for. I would have thought excluding any hazardous work would be obvious, but why not office work and for example a clothes shop? I hope youngsters take this opportunity to develop their skills and gain experience for their future,” she said. Welcoming this decision, university professors said that it was a good move as students can earn while studying. “I think a student holding a part-time job spends his time productively. The benefits include learning to handle responsibilities, manage time, interact with adults, get a peek at the working world and also occupy time in a worthwhile activity other than getting into all kinds of mischief and trouble,” said Indrani Basu, head, Department of English, Waljat College of Applied Sciences, Rusayl, Muscat. >A2

PUNITIVE MEASURES

Steps being taken to keep prices in check during Ramadan: Official Times News Service MUSCAT: There will be no increase in prices of commodities during the Holy Month of Ramadan, assured Hilal Al Ismaili, director of market regulation and control at the Public Authority for Consumer Protection (PACP). Talking to Al Shabiba, he said, “The market will see stability in prices as we are taking specific measures. We will monitor prices during Ramadan and there will be a decision to control any hike in prices. In case we find any increase, we will take necessary action and impose a fine of OMR800 on the trader or seller.”

A week before Ramadan some traders hike the prices of commodities and this becomes a major cause for concern for every citizen. “The PACP is following up on the issue through their inspectors and will take action,” added Al Ismaili. “Citizens have to communicate with the PACP through its website or on social media, or they may call or approach the PACP office to lodge a complaint,” said Al Ismaili. Sheikh Ibrahim bin Nasser Al Sawafi, secretary for fatwa at the office of His Eminence the Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamed Al Khalili, said, “The greed of traders contradicts Islamic teachings. As per Islamic teachings and the

Sunna of the Prophet (PBUH) they are not allowed to indulge in such practices.” “The rise in prices is common during Ramadan and it worries us. Traders try to make huge profits by increasing prices and residents have to bear the brunt,” said a housewife. Some citizens ascribed price hikes to the rise in consumption of certain items during Ramadan, while others said it was usually the price of vegetables and fruits that went up. He also hoped that traders would fix prices before Ramadan to enable citizens to schedule their budgets and expenses. Other citizens claimed that as

the consumption of food items increases during the Holy Month, customers have to visit the market regularly for shopping of commodities for preparation of meals and suppliers take advantage of this situation by increasing prices of essential items. The demand and supply gap is used by sellers to increase the prices of essential items. Some people have complained that the rise in prices is more on vegetables and fruits. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the PACP have to follow-up on the issue and look into the complaints of citizens to ensure stability in prices.
