reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Companies duped by a trading firm in Muscat have calculated their losses to be more than OMR1 million. “As more cheques have started to bounce during the last few weeks, our initial estimate is that the loss would be more than OMR1 million,” the owner of a company who lost OMR11,000 told Times of Oman. During the first week of December, a trading firm which was operating in Al Khuwair and had a warehouse in Barka shut down without clearing its dues for goods purchased on credit. According to officials of the duped companies, the trading firm was stocking goods from tissue paper to steel rods and even the iPhone 6. “We have decided to submit a joint petition to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. including me, have also lodged a complaint with the Royal Oman Police. We are working together. We hope the fraudsters will be nabbed soon,” said the company owners. “We planned to submit (a) joint petition, but we heard that big companies which have lost huge amounts are fighting the case alone,” said one of the owners who had been duped. The trading company was reportedly owned by a young Omani, but the dealings were conducted by an Omani woman and an Indian manager. Many major companies and small and medium enterprises have fallen prey to the fraud. An Omani woman entrepreneur had sold goods worth around OMR50,000 and an electronic gadget sale company lost around OMR65,000. A copy of the fraudulent trading company’s registration paper shows that they were allowed to trade in household appliances, perfumes, cosmetics and toilet soaps in addition to clothing, ready-made garments, novelties and food products. They were also allowed to trade in construction material and even motor vehicle spare parts. While a few have filed complaints with the police, many are waiting for their cheques to bounce before doing so. In 2013 also, a trading company in Ghala had reportedly shut its operations leaving dozens of businessmen in the lurch. In that case, businessmen and companies were duped of approximately OMR150,000.

Four Guantanamo prisoners from Yemen arrive in Sultanate for temporary stay

Belgium foils terror plot

MUSCAT/WASHINGTON: To support international efforts for freeing detainees from Guantanamo on humanitarian grounds, the Sultanate’s Government, in coordination with the Yemeni authorities, allowed four Yemenis to arrive in the Sultanate on Thursday for a temporary stay, a responsible source at the Foreign Ministry told Oman News Agency on Thursday. According to Reuters, the Pentagon sent off on Wednesday five Yemenis held at Guantanamo prison to foreign countries – four to Oman and one to Estonia despite Republican calls for a moratorium on such movements. The Pentagon identified the detainee sent to Estonia as Ahmed Abdul Qader, about 31, who had been held for 12 years at the Guan-

tanamo facility. Those sent to Oman were Al Khadr Abdallah Muhammad Al Yafi, about 44, who had been held for 13 years; Abdul Rahaman Atah Mahmood Shubatti, about 32 and imprisoned for 12 years; Fadil Husayn Salih Hintif, about 33 and imprisoned for 12 years; and Mohammed Ahmed Salam, 34, who was detained for 12 years. US officials said all five Yemenis, held for a dozen or more years at the military prison at a US Navy base in Cuba, had been cleared for release nearly five years ago by a multi-agency task force that included intelligence, diplomatic and military officials. The transfer took place just a day after several Republican US senators, including Kelly Ayotte of

New Hampshire, proposed legislation to place a moratorium on the release of most of the Guantanamo prisoners, saying they posed too much danger to the United States and its allies. US President Barack Obama has promised to close the internationally condemned detention centre, which was opened in 2002 to house detainees in the US campaign against Al Qaeda. His efforts have been blocked by lawmakers who reject the plan, including Senator John McCain, his Republican opponent in the 2008 presidential election, who said this week 30 per cent of the released detainees have re-entered the fight against the United States. Obama recently pledged to step up the closure effort, and the ad-

ministration moved 28 prisoners from Guantanamo in 2014, the most since 2009. 122 detainees remaining The transfer on Wednesday leaves 122 detainees still at the facility. Fifty-four of those, including 47 Yemenis, have been approved for resettlement, while the rest are considered too dangerous to be released. “We take our obligation to assess the security risk of detainees seriously prior to transfers. As a result, more than 90 per cent of detainees transferred during the Obama administration live quietly around the world,” said Paul Lewis, the Defence Department’s special envoy for closing Guantanamo. -Reuters with inputs from ONA
