land plots for this purpose is one of the strategies the ministry has adopted to address parking problems, said Salim Al Nabhani, assistant director general of planning and survey department. Parking is becoming more and more limited due to the fact that many households have more than one vehicle these days, he said. Swelling numbers According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total number of vehicles registered until the end of June 2015 stood at 50,802. It was reported in January last year that 90 per cent of Omani households own a vehicle. “Also, when we started planning the areas in the 80s or even

before that, we thought only about two-storey or single storey (buildings), so they did not tell the people to provide parking, but now that everything is changed, there need to be more plots,” Al Nabhani said. Building rules The official noted that the land plots provided by the ministry, which will be developed by the municipality, will conform to the rules and regulations formulated for the developers. The law states that at least one car parking slot should be provided for each villa and each unit in multi-storey commercial and residential buildings, regardless of the size of the building, Al Nabhani explained. >A3 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

MUSCAT: Expatriates working in Oman are struggling to save money for their future, with low pay and rising inflation being the top reasons. It is an extremely worrying situation for most of them since they do realise the importance of putting away money for old age. Even those who have been working here for years do not have enough in the bank to see them off in their retirement period. “We don’t get paid enough to save money. My salary is OMR745 a month and my expenses are around OMR635 a month. I have very little left to send money back home,” Amit Gavaskar, an executive from the Oman Tours Company, told the Times of Oman. One of the biggest costs that expatriates encounter while working in Oman is house rental, according to another expatriate. “I use 40 per cent of my wages to pay the rent of my flat. My landlord has been increasing the rent every two years. By the time I pay for food, transportation, children’s school fees and bills, there is nothing left,” Fairooz Al Khadhary, a Syrian teacher working for a government school, said. Inflation also takes a big bite away from the pay packages of expatriates. In the last five years, inflation in Oman has been rising steadily at 1.75 per cent annually. “The cost of food is increasing every year. Over 35 per cent of my pay packet goes towards paying

His Majesty sends greetings for food. School fees are a big factor. I have three children and parents at home to look after. I find it hard to save anything. The only money I send home is what I put into my parents’ account for their upkeep,” Joe Figarano, a Filipino national working in oil and gas firm, told the Times of Oman. Many expatriates come to Oman for financial gains but once here, they forget that and spend more money than they would have if they had stayed at home, according to financial experts. “Those expats have only themselves to blame. They have the opportunity to save but they go for luxuries instead of just necessity. They buy expensive cars, enrol their children in good schools, stay in luxury apartments or villas and eat out every day ,” George Raja, an Indian financial expert, explained. >A6
