More working days will definitely contribute towards improving the economy,” Philip added. This view was echoed by a top official from an industrial governing body in Oman. A government official also sounded the same opinion. “Long holidays have a bad impact on productivity and hurts the competitiveness of business. This is especially critical now, when we are going through a downturn in the economy because of low oil prices,” the official said, replying to a question on holiday reductions. Unlike in the past, this year will see a four-day holiday, including Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday, Eid Al Adha holidays were declared for the government and private sectors. The holiday will begin on September 23 and continue through September 26, with work resuming on Sunday, September 27. However, the decision also allows employers and employees to agree on work arrangements to compensate for the holiday. MUSCAT: With just four days of Eid holidays, citizens and residents are opting for staycations, where you stay in a hotel in your own country. Maurice de Rooij, general manager, Millennium Resort Mussanah, asked why people should travel when they can enjoy the best of Omani hospitality. “Besides, two days will be lost in travelling. So, it would be wise to spend the holidays here itself,” he told the Times of Oman on Wednesday. Staycations have recently become very popular in the Sultanate whenever there is an extended weekend. “Most of the hotel rooms report huge occupancy figures whenever there are continuous holidays,” he said, adding that he was expecting 100 per cent occupancy this Eid. Marwan Al Zadjali, communications coordinator, Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, said residents of Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council tend to travel during holidays and that is why they have their Palatial
