FROM THE WORDS OF HIS MAJESTY THE SULTAN

Before The Council of Oman, 2001

‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’ We are convinced that all forms and types of terrorism, and from whatever source, is an aggression against peace which all mankind cherishes. We are working with all nations to solidify international stability and security, and upon this conviction we condemn and reject terrorism – as we have always done throughout our Blessed Renaissance. We call upon all to counteract terrorism and remedy its causes.

MUSANDAM

Two Asians arrested for allegedly killing Omani Times News Service MUSCAT: Two Asian expatriates, accused of murdering an elderly Omani national, were arrested after police officers in Musandam received an information about a body inside a well, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) reported on Wednesday. According to the ROP, a citizen while walking along the well found sheep drinking water laced with blood. On getting information, the ROP arrived to the spot and identified the body. “The deceased was an old man living alone with the Asians who murdered him,” said an ROP official, adding that the accused used to share the same accommodation and both took part in the murder and hiding the body.

MUSCAT: Expatriates, who have been unfairly fined for ferrying passengers in their private vehicles, can reclaim the fine if they can prove their innocence, a

senior Royal Oman Police (ROP) official said. “There is no such rule that penalises an expatriate if he is providing a ride to a friend or a relative in his private vehicle. However, they can reclaim the fine if they can prove their innocence,” the police official said. Ferrying relatives Recently, many expatriates told the Times of Oman (TOO) that they were stopped and fined by police officials for ferrying relatives and friends. “I was stopped and fined by a police official on the basis that I was transporting my friend in return for money two days back. I was just helping my close friend to reach airport in my private vehicle. We tried our best to convince the official that we are not doing anything wrong but he

didn’t lend an ear to our requests. We were fined OMR35,” an Indian expatriate working at a senior position in a company in Muscat, told TOO. “I drive a sedan. I annually pay taxes and insurance to have four people in my car. How can the police stop me and slap a fine for helping my friend to reach airport? I was stopped in Al Khuwair and fined,” the expatriate, who was fined, said. A group of expatriates who went in a car to celebrate a birthday party was also fined. “I went to Qurum to celebrate my birthday. My friend was driving the car. My group was stopped by police and we were fined for moving together in one car,” Parth Mehta, told Times of Oman. “While talking to us, the police told us that this is not a new law,” Parth added.

Illegal private operators Meanwhile, the police official added that this has been done to curb illegal private transporters. “We know that many expatriates are ferrying people in private vehicles in return for money. So, patrolling is carried out to catch these violators. However, depending on the circumstances they are caught in, if they can prove they are innocent, then they can reclaim the fine,” the police official added. Tonia Gray, general manager at Competence HR, said she is surprised the ROP is stating that it will refund fines if the individual ‘can prove themselves innocent.’ “Surely, it is the job of the ROP to prove the individual is guilty of any offence before issuing a fine,” Tonia said. >A6

Artist’s efforts to help ‘Star Wars’ versus bead jewellery art ‘Dilwale’ scale global heights Times News Service

babaumar@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: For Nadia Al Shamsi, a timely switch from management studies to the world of arts proved to be a quantum leap. “I am proud of what I did,” she said joyfully. Once a management student at the Sultan Qaboos University and a passionate bead jewellery artist at home, Al Shamsi chose to build her career in the arts by starting a small workshop inside the corner of her home in the Shatti Al Qurum neighbourhood of the capital. “It was like a hobby and I wanted to take it to the next level,” she told the Times of Oman. That next level was quickly getting a degree in Creative Jewellery Design from the London Jewellery School in 2014. With the newly acquired knowledge of jewellery art and her years-long passion, Al Shamsi, now in her late 20s, launched Mazayen or Miss Camel, a small one-man company selling handmade jewellery made of silver and gemstones mostly. The company has started to yield good results. “It’s been so far a one-man army,” she laughed. “But now I am hiring more people for marketing purposes.” Al Shamsi designs the jewel-

lery from beginning to end. For customers, she participates in different exhibitions held from time to time across the Gulf region and beyond. “In my small workshop, I make three to four designs from each design and then I partake in exhibitions across the world. That’s how I meet customers,” she said. Al Shamsi was the only Arab exhibitor at the prestigious annual event held in London earlier this year, where participants that included top designers from 74 countries had come to exhibit their work. >A6

MUSCAT: Hollywood actor Harrison Ford-starrer Star Wars: The Force Awakens will clash with Bollywood’s superstar Shahrukh Khan’s Dilwale, as both the films are being released in Oman today. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a 2015 American epic space opera film directed, coproduced, and co-written by J. J. Abrams. The film is set approximately 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi (1983). On the other hand, Dilwale, which means ‘large hearted’ is an Indian romantic film directed by Rohit Shetty and produced by Gauri Khan. Most theatres operated by City Cinema and Vox are screening the movie in the early hours of opening day on Thursday. “We are getting a good response for both the movies. All the tickets are reserved and we are running more shows than usual,” said Neha Singh, business operations manager at City Cinema. A spokesperson of Vox Cinemas said: “VOX Cinemas is receiving an overwhelming response for the films: Star Wars and Dilwale, releasing on Thursday, VOX Cinemas is expecting a record breaking weekend.”

Oman is not on the list of coalition, according to the list published by Saudi Arabia’s official news agency SPA. According to SPA, the countries that have decided to form a military alliance to fight terrorism led by Saudi and a joint operations centre are, Jordan, UAE, Pakistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Turkey, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, Djibouti, Senegal, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Gabon, Guinea, Palestine,

Comoros, Qatar, Cote d’Ivoire, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Maldives, Mali, Malaysia, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Yemen. Dr Khalid bin Salim Al Sa’eedi, Secretary General of the State Council, asserted that Oman has always chosen to support peace and avoid violence. “His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said made this country an international port of peace for all coun-

tries,” Al Saeedi said, adding that even before 1970, Oman had kept a very visible and clear political stance which promoted peaceful solutions. Leon Goldsmith, who teaches Political Science at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), called the formation of alliance a “very interesting development” in the region. He said the development highlights Oman’s policy of “permanent neutrality”. >A6
