FROM THE WORDS OF HIS MAJESTY THE SULTAN

On the occasion of the 18th National Day

‘His Majesty’s Wisdom’ In our view, it is one of the utmost duties, as we enter this new century, that all countries should work to fight tyranny and despotism, confront the policies of ethnic cleansing and the humiliation of human dignity. They should work, as well, to oppose the occupation of others’ lands and denial of legitimate rights. Also, they should strive to balance the scales of justice so that security, peace and tranquility shall be established throughout the world.

exactly one month from the Sultanate’s ultimate day of pride, National Day Staff Reporter MUSCAT: “All we ever seem to read these days is bad news.” It’s a familiar comment from consumers of news both online and in print all around the world. And it’s true that the media’s role is to hold a mirror to the society it covers, reflecting both the good and the bad, the praiseworthy and the issues where matters can be improved. So why does it seem like the bad news outweighs the good? Often it’s because those engaged

in kind acts, initiatives of charity, examples of individual bravery, simply do so not for publicity but because it is just the right thing to do, and therefore are often quiet about their achievements. The news isn’t all bad of course, in the pages of the Times of Oman recently you will have read of little Basma Mohammed Faisal. The critically-ill girl is now preparing for life-saving medical treatment abroad thanks to donations from readers touched by her story. Kindness of members Or last week we brought you words, pictures and video of the kindness of members of social media group What’s Happening Muscat Oman who donated a mountain of toys for sick children being treated in hospital.

If you pour though the pages of the Times of Oman or online at timesofoman.com you’ll find inspirational stories from Omanis and expats alike almost every day, but it is time for us to do more. And we want you help. Today the Times of Oman launches its #OmanPride campaign, fittingly exactly one month from the Sultanate’s ultimate day of pride, National Day. We want you to help us celebrate all that is good in Oman and we’ll report on it with #OmanPride being our dedicated banner for good news. Share with us anything you feel promotes what’s best in the country we all call home. It can be beautiful photographs, a video of a sunset, pictures of the past. You might want to share with us a story of unsung kindness or bravery against the odds. Tell us about the things and people in your life which inspire you and why. Write a poem praising His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, pen a letter thanking the Royal Oman Police officer who helped you, lend your support in words, pictures and video to the brave men and women of the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance. >A5

be stopped by force from crossing wadis. They don’t have to risk their lives and the lives of others, including their family members

and the members of PACDA rescue force,” said Amir Al Rahbi, a Samail resident. He added that the authorities concerned should combat such actions by force. “There must be a rule enforced in each wadi, especially those crossing main roads during rainfall, to stop such motorists and issue heftier fines when they resist,” said Salah Al Hanshi, a Behla resident. Al Hanshi added that the fine is not enough, but such people should be legally questioned by the public prosecution. “It is risking other people’s lives and they should face legal actions,” said Al Hanshi. A source at the ROP said it was quite difficult to assign monitoring forces in each and every wadi. >A6

Expatriate recounts brush with death REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: “I was swept away by the strong currents in the overflowing wadi (valley). My neck got entangled in the branches of a flowing tree. But I was swept away from their too. For those 45 minutes, I saw death from close quarters.” Anil Kumar, 40, an Indian expatriate, narrated how he was swept away in a wadi near Nizwa at around 7pm on Thursday and later saved by Omani citizens at around 8pm. Meanwhile, Kumar’s friend Jayachandran, also an Indian expat, was swept away by wadi from his vehicle along with Anil around the same time, and his body was

recovered by police on Friday. “We were on our way back to Jebel Akdhar from Nizwa. While we entered the wadi, the water level was quite low. However, a car in front of us got stuck in the middle. It stopped us from moving further. I couldn’t reverse the vehicle because there were vehicles lined up behind me. Soon, the water level started to rise,” Kumar said. As the water level rose, Kumar and Jayachandran climbed on top of the vehicle. But due to the strong current, they were swept away. “I could see Jayachandran for a few minutes, struggling to keep himself afloat but after a few minutes, I lost sight of him,” he said. >A6
