drawing the lowest fares pushing up airfares. “The fares will be a little more from this month-end as the number of seats in the lower classes will come down,” Riyaz Kuttery, Jet Airways general manager for Oman said. However, for some carriers, the lean season will continue till May, 2015. “We will be offering promotional fares till May 31, and after that the prices will increase by 10 to 20 per cent,” said Rajan Jayraman, country manager of Kuwait Airways. >A6

MUSCAT: Introducing taxis with female drivers can help shield women from harassment, says the Women’s Guild in Oman (WGO), joining calls by female passengers who demand safer cabs. Susan Flower, the president of WGO, says that she has heard of women being accosted by male drivers and it would be a good idea to introduce female taxi drivers in

Oman for the comfort of women who do not wish to ride taxis with men. “In Dubai they have female taxi drivers with vehicles clearly identifiable as having female drivers,” she told Times of Oman, noting that certain cultures would feel more at ease with a female driver. “I have not personally been in a taxi as a woman by herself, however, if I walk along the street, often taxis pass and beep their horns which I consider a form

In order to end misconduct towards women in taxis, she says that taxis should be metered and be made to display official ID badges in the front and rear of the vehicle and there should be a process whereby women can report taxi drivers for inappropriate behaviour.

“The practice of randomly picking up customers and sharing taxis should be prohibited, particularly where there are women passengers, and women should be able to sit in the backseat in comfort,” she said. >A7

of harassment. I have however been told of many stories by female domestic workers who have had horrific experiences in taxis where they have been forced to sit in the front and physically abused by not only taxi drivers but also by other male passengers who have been permitted to share the taxi,” said Flower.

MUSCAT: A taxi company needs to be established in Oman to deal with issues related to taxis and further regulate this sector, says a member of the Muscat Municipal Council. Mahmood Al Shahwarzi, representative of Muttrah at the Muscat Municipal Council, believes that the whole taxi system in Oman has to be reviewed and revised and taxi drivers should be required to meet stricter criteria. He said that there is a need for the establishment of a taxi company to deal with issues related to taxis, apart from the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the Muscat Municipality, which are currently handling these matters. There should be stricter regulations regarding the type of the car used as a taxi and an age limit should be set for taxi drivers to ensure the safety of the passengers, he said. >A7
