BABA UMAR

babaumar@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman’s crude oil prices fell to $37.81 per barrel on Monday, as reported by the Dubai Mercantile Exchange, after oil producers failed to agree on production limits. Experts, however, say the impact in the drop will not be significant in the Sultanate. “I think prices will remain stable,” Suresh Kumar, research head at Al Maha Financial Services, told Times of Oman. “Kuwait and the United States have cut down costs. Also, it is due to the supply and demand ratio. When production goes up, prices fall,” he said. On April 13, the price of Oman Crude Oil Financial Contract, DME Oman, for June deliveries closed at $40.56 per barrel on the Dubai Mercantile Exchange (DME). DME Oman crude oil is a benchmark for pricing crude oil by those nations that produce it.

Saudi-Iran tension Talks among Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) faltered in Qatar after oilproducing countries failed to reach agreement over limiting production. Saudi Arabia announced it would not restrain its production unless other producers, including Iran, agree to a freeze. Iran, however, did not attend the meeting. “Interestingly,” Kumar said, “Kuwait’s crude production

Oman offers to bridge Saudi-Iran gap in oil output talks >B1 dropped by more than half on Sunday, as thousands of its oil industry employees began an open-ended strike over the government plans to cut wages.” “The output fell to 1.1 million barrels a day, which will help oil prices remain stable,” he said. Price likely to rise Kumar added, “The worst is behind us. From $26 the oil price rose to $40 and by this year we hope that it will be around $50 a barrel.” Others say the deadlock in the Qatar talks is bad news for all oil-producing nations. “It is certainly bad news for all OPEC countries. The failure of reaching an agreement is depressing. In some sense, it will affect the global economy,” N. Gurumurthy, a Muscat-based financial expert, told Times of Oman. >A6

AL BURAIMI INCIDENT

Abandoned girl to stay at care home Times News Service MUSCAT: In case no relative of the abandoned girl child shows up, she will be kept at the child care centre permanently until somebody offers to foster her, the Director of the Child Care Centre in Oman said. The girl abandoned in a public park in Al Buraimi was transferred to the Child Care Centre in Muscat, said the Ministry of Social Development. Many social media users have offered to foster the child and shown sympathy towards her. A citizen has offered via Twitter an OMR1,000 award for the person who can find the abandoned girl’s parents. However, the Ministry of Social Development said it’s too early to hand over the little girl to a foster family. According to the law, she will be kept at the centre until all legal

procedures are over. She will be later kept at the ‘Al Wifaq’ Care Centre. There are criteria to be followed to foster a child, and those who are interested must contact the Child Affair Department at the Ministry of Social Development, the ministry said. The unidentified girl is about two years old, said the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

MUSCAT: People in Oman will be able to observe the transit of Mercury across the Sun on May 9, the Oman Astronomical Society (OAS) said. This will be a rare event, as it takes place only 13 times in every century, with Mercury moving near the centre of the Sun, according to OAS. The phenomenon will be visible in the Muscat governorate before sunset at 6:36pm. Mercury will first touch the Sun at 3:11 pm, and will enter the Sun’s circle at 3:14 pm. However, astronomers in Oman have advised people not watch the event with naked eyes. “It is never safe to watch the transit without taking special precautions as it can cause damage to the eyes,” said Saleh Al Shidhani from OAS. He stressed that observers should use telescopes

with a sun filter to safely enjoy viewing the little planet travel in front of the Sun. According to Al Shidani, the event can be witnessed in all parts Oman. “We are planning to have a gathering at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Nizwa and Bausher to watch the event,” he

added. The Oman News Agency (ONA) reported that the little planet will cover only 0.6 per cent of the Sun’s size. According to sciencealert.com, the transit of Mercury occurs when Mercury passes between the Sun and Earth, and this takes place only about 13 or 14 times

every 100 years. This year, the planet will take around eight hours to make its glorious way across the Sun. However, people in Indonesia, Australasia and eastern Asia will not be able to see the astronomical event. The last three transits occurred in 1999, 2003 and 2006.
