Turkey following the failed military coup

Times News Service MUSCAT: A Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) jet carrying 71 Omani nationals from troubletorn Turkey touched down safely in Muscat on Monday night. Some 300 Omanis decided to remain in Turkey following the failed military coup. More than 6,000 Turkish citizens have been detained and 3,000 judges were removed from the office. The Royal Air Force of Oman

plane flew to Istanbul yesterday lunchtime and took 71 nationals on board. Many who had originally opted to leave changed their minds and stayed on in the country, now settling again after a military attempt to seize control. Embassy request No Omanis have been injured or killed in the bloody military coup, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the flight was scheduled at the request of the

Oman Embassy in Istanbul, which had received calls from Omanis wishing to leave businesses and holiday plans behind. The country’s main airport has now reopened, but airlines are still not flying in or out of the troubled nation and flights have been delayed. The rescue flight took off from Ataturk Airport in Istanbul at around 4:30pm local time yester-

day with 71 passengers on board. Evacuation “All the Omanis were asked to report at the airport around 12pm today,” an Oman embassy official in Turkey said. On Saturday, Oman’s Foreign Ministry had announced it would evacuate Omanis via private aircraft. “While around 300 Omani

nationals wished to stay in Turkey, saying that conditions have improved, around 71 Omani nationals left for Oman,” the official revealed. The aircraft sent to Turkey is an Airbus owned and operated by the Royal Air Force of Oman kitted out for civilian transport. Turkey is among the more popular tourist destinations for Omanis, drawing about 15,000 to 20,000 tourists. Travel industry sources said about 200 passengers take flights to Turkey from the city every day for business and leisure. Mehmed Zingal, country manager of Turkish Airlines in Oman, said they also resumed their operations from Sunday. “Everything is returning to normal and we are committed to operating nine flights a week to Oman,” he said.

MUSCAT: Opening your home to tourists without taking permission from the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) and the municipality concerned is illegal, a senior official said. The statement was issued in the wake of the Khareef (monsoon) season in the Dhofar governorate, which will continue until September 21 this year. The governorate has started receiving a large number of tourists. During this season, the Salalah Tourism Festival is also organised, which is expected to conclude on August 31. Already, 58,867 tourists have visited the southern city until July 9, according to National Centre

for Statistics and Information (NCSI). As per data provided by the NCSI, 23,636 Asians visited Salalah, compared with 20,909 Omanis. Emirati citizens topped the number of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) tourists at 5,628, compared with 2,179 Saudis. Terming a common practice illegal, an official from MoT in Salalah said a lot of people sublet their houses as there aren’t many hotels in Salalah. A team comprising of MoT and Dhofar Municipality’s officials is keeping this in check. Not only in Dhofar, subletting homes is illegal in Muscat too. “You should always have an agreement or contract from the owner of the building,” said an official

from the Muscat Municipality. Citing the example of Saudi Arabia, residents argued said that citizens use their cars as taxis as there aren’t enough taxis available during the Haj season. Even popular websites, such as Airbnb.com, are offering some

properties listed for rent in Oman, starting from around OMR4 per night, allowing people to select an entire villa, private room or shared rooms. The Salalah Tourism Festival 2016 has already begun and is based on the theme, “Oman: Love & Peace.” Sheikh Salim bin Ufait Al Shanfari, head of the Dhofar Municipality and the head of the Festival Organising Committee, said the festival this year will hold several activities in various fields, such as economic, heritage, social, cultural, sports and entertainment. The festival will include many activities, such as the traditional village, which will showcase traditional handicrafts, arts, games, local cuisine and costumes.
