Muscat Media Group wins major infographic honour Times News Service MUSCAT: “On the Ball” graphic published in Times of Oman during the World Cup coverage last year won the prestigious Peter Sullivan Award (Best in Show – Print Category) in the recently concluded Malofiej International Infographic Awards held in Pamplona, Spain. The said graphic was also given two gold medals in feature category and in criteria (innovative format) category, which add up to the total of seven medals received this year by Muscat Media Group (MMG) publications. Times of Oman has also collected two silver medals for “No Country for Bearded/Shaven Men” and for its World Cup coverage graphics, as well as a bronze medal for “The Chart of Catastrophe”, while its sister publication Al Shabiba bagged silver for its feature graphics portfolio and a bronze for “The New Muscat Court Complex”. This year’s win is a milestone for MMG as Times of Oman is the first newspaper outside Europe and the United States to be honoured with the Peter Sullivan Award. Since the “Best in Show “was introduced in 2001, only seven newsrooms or media companies were bestowed with this award, namely The New York Times (US), El Mundo (Spain), El Pais (Spain), BBC (UK), El Correo (Spain), Svenska Dagbladet (Sweden), and The

MUSCAT: Heftier penalties and jail terms in the mining sector against smuggling of meteorites and fossils are being planned in the new mining law that is being worked out by authorities. The mining law will soon see the light of day as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, representing the mining department along with other specialists from the government, is working on the document to make it a law. Dr Ali Al Rajhi, director general of the mining department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry told the Times of Oman, that the new law will include new regulations, heftier penalties and jail terms in the mining sector against smuggling of meteorites and fossils.

“As violations have been registered in the past, the new law will strictly regulate the mining sector in the country,” said Al Rajhi. As the country is keen to check meteorite smuggling, the new law will act as a deterrent. He acknowledged that very few cases of meteorite smuggling via Omani borders had been registered. “A person can take small pieces of meteorite after obtaining permission from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry,” he confirmed. As many as 3,336 meteorites have been discovered in the Omani deserts, mostly in Wusta and Dhofar governorates. Another source at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that the ministry and other government bodies were together keeping a close eye on meteorite hunters travelling to Oman. >A6

32-HOUR KIDNAP RELIVED Mentally and

National Svenska Geographic Times Dagbladet Magazine of Oman Sweden

MUSCAT: A 32-hour kidnap ordeal has been relived after Vamadevan and his family were held captive at their residence by two strangers. “Even now, mentally and physically we are shattered. We live in fear that we may be attacked again. The 32-hour-long captivity still haunts my wife. She wakes up at night crying that somebody is trying to grab her leg,” Vamadevan told the Times of Oman. “After we were untied by my brother and his friends, my wife was rushed to the hospital by the police and our friends. She was kept under observation for days. She is still under medication and we have more consultations in the coming weeks. She is on a liquid

diet as she has developed an infection in the throat after the culprits forced her to drink something,” added Vamadevan. Vamadevan (51), his wife Shubha (45) and their 13-year-old son were overpowered and tied up by two strangers who had stormed into the house armed with knives and clubs. The strangers reportedly came to their home on Wednesday, March 4 on the pretext of returning some money they had borrowed from a relative of the family. “As we knew one of the two men through another friend, we opened the door. We were alone at home as our son had gone to school. The moment they entered the house, they overpowered us and tied us up with ropes and moved us to different rooms. When our son came back they did the same to him. We were tortured physically and were threatened with death if we did not hand over our money and gold. Fearing for our lives, we did what they said,” Vamadevan said. After keeping the family in captivity for 32 hours the men left the next evening, March 5, with the gold and money, leaving the family tied up after injecting them with some drug to render them unconscious. “When they left and I was able to free myself, I untied my son and wife. My son has a VOIP phone with which I called my brother,” said Vamadevan. >A4
