tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Details of the forensic police operation that prevented a gang’s audacious plot to spirit OMR1.4m in gold out of Oman have been revealed. The investigation, by a squad of detectives within the Royal Oman Police Directorate General of Inquiries and Investigations, involved Interpol and catching
suspects attempting to flee by sea and by air. Two of those arrested were taken off an international flight as it was about to leave Muscat International Airport. Others were caught trying to flee by sea, police confirmed. Officers spent more than six weeks forensically tracking movements of vehicles used by the gang and discovered that on the night of the heist they drove a car full of
37kg of gold straight past the Royal Palace – one of Oman’s most heavily protected areas. The jigsaw puzzle for the police team was finally completed when they tracked the gang to an address in Hamriya, just a short drive from the jewellery store in Muttrah Souq they raided. Officers within the Directorate General of Inquiries and Investigations hunted down six of the nine criminals – all of whom are of Asian nationality – and have alerted Interpol to help catch another three men they believe were involved. The ROP revealed exclusive details of the Muttrah case to Times of Oman. On August 4, police first received a call at 8:15am about a rob-
bery in one of the jewellery stores in Muttrah’s Gold Souq. The gang ransacked the store in Muttrah after using a blowtorch to cut open the chains that secured the metal grates. They hauled 37 kilograms of pure gold from the store valued at OMR 1.2 million, according to the police report. Detectives and forensic specialists tracking them down were stunned to see that the route the gang took back to the rented apartment in Hamriya meant they were hauling over a million rials worth of gold while passing through one of the most secure areas in Muscat, where Al Alam Palace, National Museum of Oman and the State Council are located. >A4
OMR300,000
Expat dupes many in Oman, vanishes REJIMON K
reji@timesofoman.com
MORNING MINUTE
MUSCAT: An investor from the south Indian state of Kerala is allegedly missing in Oman after he failed to pay OMR300,000 to at least a half a dozen businessmen since the last week of August. According to the duped victims, the three mobile phone numbers of SK, the investor, are not reachable and he is missing from his place of residence in Muscat. “He took money from me by
handing over cheques and other bonds to start a joint business in Oman. Long back, I had worked with him in the same office. So, I thought he is a genuine person. I trusted him,” a businessman, who has lost OMR50,000, told the Times of Oman. “However, after investing money, I found that nothing was progressing on the business front. So, I produced the cheques in the bank, and found that they were fake ones. Finally, I filed a case with the police in August,” the
businessman said. According to a legal advisor, who is handling the duped businessmen’s cases, there are six complaints lodged against SK with the police in Muscat. “Day by day, the number of people approaching us for assistance to lodge complaint is growing. It seems the amount will go up further,” the legal advisor added. Another businessman said that when he had launched an individual probe after losing money, he had found many others had loaned SK huge sums of money. >A6

APPLE LAUNCH
Latest version of iPhone draws mixed reactions in Oman DEEBA HASAN
deeba@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Apple fans in the country have reported mixed reactions to the launch of the iPhone7, even as they anticipate the product’s official launch in Oman. Despite the phone not being officially launched in the country, Apple product admirers in Oman rushed to stores on the first day of the release to buy the latest handset. Some were able to buy it because of availability in the grey market, however, many chose to purchase it from the official Apple store in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
or elsewhere abroad in case they were travelling. Sufyan Mahmood, an Omani cricket team player is a regular user of the iPhone, said that although he rushed to buy the latest model and that the phone works well, he is disappointed that the features in the new phone are not very different from the previous version, especially in terms of looks. “I bought my iPhone7 from one of the stores in Ruwi for OMR310. It has a 32GB memory and honestly speaking I am disappointed with this latest launch by Apple. There is no big difference, mainly when it comes to the looks, no one can differentiate an iPhone6 and
iPhone7 is available in grey market for around OMR300 in Oman and Apple lovers are going for it
an iPhone7, looks totally the same. To that extent I have to actually tell everyone that this is an iPhone7.” Adnan Ilyas, another cricketer from the Omani national team, bought the iPhone7 plus for OMR360 from a shop in Ruwi, and
said he is pleased with the phone. “I love this new phone, the iOS10 is great and also very user-friendly, the phone also has two cameras, which is amazing.” Rida Shehzad, an MBA student at the Sultan Qaboos University
bought the iPhone7 as a present for her father from a store in a mall in Qurum, and said it is not different from the iPhone6. Similar features “Although the phone works great with the software and everything, I don’t see any reason for people to move from iPhone6 to the iPhone7, because they are very similar with no major improvements. “I use the iPhone6, but my father used the iPhone5 previously, so for him it’s a good change, with the screen size and the updated operating system and a few other features.” “I bought the phone for OMR300,
and before going to this store, I went to some of the bigger stores in Oman, but they said that they are expecting the stock only by September 25,” Shehzad said. As the phone has not been officially launched in the country, prices vary from one store to another. An Apple fan told the Times of Oman that although he has not purchased the phone yet; he intends to buy it from Dubai as prices in Oman are much higher, “I got a quote for OMR500 from a store in Qurum for the iPhone7 with a 256GB memory, which I can buy for AED3,399 or OMR356 from the official Apple store in Dubai.”>A4
