Clampdown on vice as 43 Asians held Under new curbs, an Asian female will have to show a return ticket and will be given a 10-day visa

Staff Reporters MUSCAT: Thai embassy officials have met government ministry advisors to discuss restrictions imposed on female Thai tourists coming to the Sultanate, according to a senior embassy official. Restrictions on females from Thailand and some other Asian countries coming to Oman are now being enforced by the Royal Oman Police (ROP), after a vice clampdown led to the arrest of a number of Thai nationals. Dozens of women – many of them Thai – were detained after an undercover operation mounted by police recently. A total of 43 females were detained for prostitution on the streets around Bausher and Al Khuwair in Muscat. All of those arrested were in the Sultanate on tourist visas. Officials announced the arrests and restrictions yesterday.

Mega theme park to be built in Barka REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A world-class, 1.5 million square metre theme park will be built in Barka, the Muscat National Development Company SAOC (ASAAS) has announced. It will boast of an integrated theme park, a wildlife and waterpark, an equestrian centre and edutainment centre as well as multiple hotels, a residential zone and retail areas that will offer a range of retail, leisure and dining options, according to developers. “The result of extensive local and regional research and consultation, this entertainment and leisure destination, in common with all ASAAS projects and investments, will support the Sultanate’s agenda to diversify the economy and drive societal progress,”

Now, anyone from Thailand or some other Asian countries must show a return ticket and will only be given a 10-day visa, if they can show that they will be living in a four-star hotel or above during their stay here. The visa cannot be extended and any female from Asia hoping to return to Oman quickly must now wait at least a month in their home country before re-applying. Female tourists found breaching their tourist visas in Oman will also have their names added to an “unwanted to enter the country” list, the Royal Oman Police said. land’s embassy officials to meet with the ministry officials to discuss solutions. Royal Oman Police had been monitoring the Al Khuwair and Bausher areas for some time after complaints from local residents about women selling sex on the streets there. Undercover officers approached girls and when they offered their services arrests were made in 10 cases. The remaining 33 Thai nationals had been observed by police in the act of soliciting people on the streets in various other areas of Muscat, according to sources. The ROP arrested the women in Wilayat Bausher in Muscat Governorate for practicing prostitution and violating the residency law. Investigators, in cooperation with Special Tasks Police, raided several locations in Al Khuwair where 10 women were caught. The remaining 33 were arrested in three different locations. The new rules on tourist visas followed the arrests of Asian tourists for allegedly being involved in human trafficking, prostitution and drug abuse crimes, the force said in a statement. Hotel apartments and motels do not count, according to the new restrictions. Under the new rules, the visa length has also been reduced to a maximum of ten days, non-extendable. >A6

Eng. Khalid Al Yahmadi, ASAAS CEO.

Eng. Khalid Al Yahmadi, ASAAS CEO, said. “It will, without a doubt, add new vitality and impetus to Barka and the surrounding area but the immense scale of the destination means that its impact will extend

well beyond the immediate vicinity of its operations. Indeed, benefiting the country as a whole, it will deliver sustainable economic returns, attract investment, stimulate development and enterprise, and create a multitude of direct and indirect job opportunities,” he added. The Muscat Finance Corporation Limited (MFCL) has transferred, through one of its group companies, the 1.5 million square metre plot in its project, previously known as Blue City, to the ASAAS. The ASAAS has identified a renowned American company, based out of Orlando, Florida, to operate the theme park and wildlife park. The names of other partners in this mega-project will be announced in the near future. “The family-oriented destination in Barka will be able to strong-

ly communicate its unique offerings to the public and also leverage the beauty of the natural landscape to showcase Oman’s heritage and traditions, honouring local culture and history through its design, architecture and activities,” Khalid added. Built on a high-profile premium destination stretching approximately one kilometre on the beach front, the project will offer both lifestyle and educational aspects for children and adults. Among other attractions, visitors will enjoy an innovative, learning-focused dimension at the Interactive Science and Technology Edutainment Centre, designed to be an inspirational knowledge hub for Oman’s young. In addition, celebrating Oman’s famed horsemanship will be an Equestrian Centre.>A6

CHECKED-IN BAG

Cheaper baggage fee planned by Oman Air REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: From January, Oman Air passengers will be able to check in only one 30 kg suitcase per person, but the price for being overweight in your luggage will be slashed. All passengers travelling on Oman Air flights can carry only one checked-in bag weighing no more than 30kg, the airline has announced. “This 30kg cannot be split into two or three pieces,” an airline official clarified. Passengers turning up for flights with excess baggage will be charged OMR20 for the first additional 20kg of extra weight, or a reduced tariff of OMR16 if the additional baggage is paid for in advance online. That’s around OMR1 per kilo. Currently, excess baggage fees are much higher.

“Passengers travelling in business and first class will be permitted one extra bag with a maximum weight of 20kg, increasing to 30kg for passengers with valid Gold and Silver Sindbad cards,” the official said, while passengers travelling Economy class with valid Gold and Silver Sindbad cards will be permitted one extra bag with a maximum weight of 20kg. >A6
