rahuldas@timesofoman.com fahadnews@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Hospitals evacuated, cars swept away, lives at risk and emergency services stretched to the limit protecting citizens of Muscat. It’s a familiar tale every time the sky darkens and rain falls on the

capital, the heavier the downpour the greater the disruption. While the recent tropical storm Ashobaa passed by Muscat, the scenes from the last bout of bad weather remain fresh in many memories. But maybe that is all about to change. Drainage system Muscat Municipality has initi-

bra and Al Athaiba, the two areas below sea-level with a multitude of roads and numerous wadis but without a drainage system, which often leaves the areas waterlogged and prone to flooding. The municipality has also initiated a study for mapping the wadi networks, measuring their total volume and the amount of rainwater they receive, rating their efficiency and basically surveying the existing drainage system to prepare a new plan that fits the needs of the governorate. “We are working on something that will help us to solve the drainage problems in the governorate,” he said. The project will also include work on a hydrological model to track the movement of storm water and finding ways to properly drain it. “Every city in the world has a process to drain the storm water and right now we are working on that plan,” he said. >A6

Issuing an alert, the Indian meteorology department has said that Sunday night’s low-pressure area over the northeast Arabian Sea has already intensified by Monday morning. Meanwhile, Anthony Sagliani, international meteorologist at Accuweather.com, said that the system will not bring rain to Oman or impact the country. Most of the rain will fall in southern Pakistan and Northwest India. The Joint Typhoon Warning Centre said the area of convection is located 295 nautical miles South of Karachi, in Pakistan.

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Rain clouds are moving towards the Oman coast following the formation of a depression over the Arabian Sea. “The skies will be partly cloudy along the coastal areas of Dhofar and adjoining mountains with chances of intermittent drizzle. Areas adjoining Al Hajar Mountains may also receive isolated rain. There will be a dust storm in open areas too,” said the Oman meteorological department in its 48-hour forecast. Film on Oman beauty goes viral REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A four-minute video titled 12 days in Oman, which has captured the beauty of Oman over 12 days, has gone viral on the web. Directed and edited by a German freelance filmmaker and uploaded on Vimeo, the video has been seen by 58,700 viewers in eight days. “We drove over 4,200 kilometres across the unexplored and beautiful country of Oman. We made friends with young and old Omanis, discovered absolutely stunning landscapes and captured our entire experience in this film,” Marko Roth, the German filmmaker told the Times of Oman. “Together with my friends Lucas, Dominik and Vivi, we explored Oman in 12 days. On our way from the north to the south, we came across deserts, beautiful beaches, high mountains and amazing wadis,” said Marko, adding that he

visited Muscat as he wanted to discover a new place. “My favourite spots were the wadis. I have never seen something as gorgeous and natural in my life before,” added Marko.

The breathtaking beauty of Oman was captured with Canon 5D, GoPro, Iphone 6 and a Glidecam HD-4000. According to Marko who has done similar projects in Norway, France, Tunisia, Denmark, Argentina and Brazil, the Omani people were very friendly. “Everything was possible. Normally I have to watch all my camera equipment carefully, so it does not get stolen. In Oman, I never had to worry about my stuff. We felt really safe,” said Marko. “More than 50,000 people have viewed our film. Two Omanis have invited us for dinner and we have received more than 60 overwhelming comments and messages and plenty of institutions, including the Ministry of Tourism, have supported this film,” added Marko.
