A PROMISING LIFE CUT SHORT REJIMON K reji@timesofoman.com
While relatives in India were buying gifts and preparing for Chikku’s arrival in September for delivery, now in a state of shock, they are waiting to collect her body
MUSCAT: Five months pregnant, a loving husband and good job caring for others. Life for Chikku Robert held so much promise, but that future has been robbed by a shocking and violent end. “She used to send money every month, asking us to buy gifts for her expecting baby and the entire family was excited. Sophia Issac (Chikku Robert’s mother) had bought some too. We were waiting for her arrival in September for the delivery. But fate is against us and now we are waiting for her mortal remains.” These are the words of Shaji Issac, Chikku Robert’s uncle,
who said he is still in shock after hearing the news that his niece was found dead in Oman following a stabbing incident. Robert, a nurse from the south Indian state of Kerala, was found dead in her apartment in Salalah with stab marks on her body, late at night on Wednesday. She was supposed to be on duty by 10pm on Wednesday, but as she did not turn up for work, Linson Thomas, her husband, who is also working in the same hospital, went to the apartment to look for her, where she was found her lying dead. Robert and Thomas had married in October and she was five months pregnant. “She used to call Sophia daily.

A film-maker’s love for Oman
MOBIN MATHEW BLESSON mobinmathew@timesofoman.com
MUSCAT: Oman’s diverse natural beauty contributes to it being a destination for film production and cultural tourism, says Sudha Sha, a film-maker in Oman. Sudha is planning to shoot a film to promote the natural beauty of Oman for international audiences. “I know this place, the same as my native home,” Sudha told Times of Oman. Sudha is an Indian expat who has lived in Oman for the last 18 years. “The cultural and political history of this land is quite interesting, and the landscape of Oman is
encouraging to any film-maker to find inspiration,” she added. “It is my privilege to use this opportunity to promote the unique characteristics of the Sultanate through my film,” Sudha continued. According to Sudha, movies are life that has been retold
through a media. “We have to tell our stories, the life around us, and movies are a universal language to tell these stories to the world,” Sudha said. “Being a film-maker from Oman, I am trying to explore the possibilities of indigenous films to tell stories from the region to international audiences,” she explained. Speaking about the themes of the movie, Sudha said, “The life and culture of Arabic regions are mostly interpreted through western movies, and they portray it according to their conception and imagination. Those movies are less artistically motivated.”>A7
That day, she didn’t. Sophia was a bit worried then itself. However, later on, we told her that Chikku had met with some accident and had been admitted to hospital. That itself had devastated her. She had fainted and was rushed to hospital,” Shaji, who flew to Kerala from Kuwait following Chikku’s tragic death, told the Times of Oman over phone from Chikku’s home in Kerala. “Chikku was a state-level basketball player. She had won several trophies and medals. I have put them all in a cupboard and locked them. Seeing them again and again is worrisome,” Chikku’s uncle said, adding that the entire village was still not out of the shock.>A6
MUSCAT: A child who went missing at the Saham beach was found dead, the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) tweeted. In a tweet posted on its official Twitter handle at around 11pm on Friday, PACDA said the missing child’s body has been found. Earlier in February, two young Omani siblings had set off on a fishing trip and had gone missing and their bodies were found later on. Last December, an 18-yearold Jordanian girl had drowned in the Al Mughsayl waters, some 40 km from Salalah and in September, two girls had drowned in a wadi in the Sohar province
while out for an afternoon swim, which was left unsupervised during a sightseeing trip. Both children, who drowned in September, were not more than nine-year-old, PACDA had said at the time. The children were holidaying with their family in Wadi Jizzi, where a number of small pools had sprung up after the area received heavy rainfall last week. The family pulled out one of the children from the water, but couldn’t revive her. Civil defence personnel retrieved the other child’s body later. According to reports, nine children have drowned in Oman between 2014 and in 2015, with seven expatriates drowning in Yiti in Muscat and the Mughsayl beaches.
