MUSCAT: Cricket enthusiast Moula Bakhsh Al Balushi is one of the key figures for the development of this sport in Oman. Today, the Times of Oman (TOO) features Al Balushi and his passion for the “gentleman’s game”, as part of its #OmanPride campaign. Al Balushi considers late Sayyid Abbas bin Faisal from the Royal family as his inspiration for cricket during his childhood days. He is also a hardcore fan of former Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis. Al Balushi is also the founder of the Al Hail School of Cricket in Mabellah, which provides cricket coaching to children of all ages. High quality grass and facilities are available for budding cricketers here. “We have our own grounds and recently we converted it into a grass ground and turf pitch to provide the right kind of facilities for young talented players in my club, not only from a sports perspective, but for the overall personality development,” Al Balushi told TOO.

“We vow to continue improving the quality of cricket in the Sultanate and thus develop the sport in the country,” he said. The vision of Al Hail cricket school is to ensure the growth of cricket and raise its standards. According to Al Balushi, the mission of the school after its formation was to increase the popularity of cricket as a sport in Oman, to discover cricketing talent, and to nurture them by imparting scientific and advanced training. “We have already achieved most of our missions till date,” Al Balushi asserted. According to him, Oman’s cricketing future is very bright. He also praised Oman Cricket’s initia-

tive of developing young talent in by forming national youth team. “The qualification of Oman’s national team in the upcoming T20 World Cup is the best example to show how the sport and cricket are progressing in Oman,” Al Balushi stated. Still, the game requires a lot of development in Oman, Al Balushi noted. “Awareness has to be created at the grassroots level to find young Omani talent,” he added. The Al Hail School of Cricket has set up a cricket academy. It has tied up with international cricket academics in India, the UAE, the United Kingdom and in Pakistan, etc. to develop budding players. “We are also in the process of tying up with former international players, who can help us with grassroots coaching,” Al Balushi said. According to him, Geoff Cook, a former British cricketer, who visited Oman in October, had agreed to impart coaching. Former Pakistani captain Rashid Latif also visited Oman last year to secure a deal with Al Hail School of Cricket and has also promised

to help develop local Omani cricket talent. The Al Hail School of Cricket is currently coaching young locals as well as expatriate players and is using experienced professional coaches. “The best training is imparted on a cricket ground during a live match, which is what I am trying to offer to my academy’s players,” Al Balushi said. “We conduct daily matches for the academy’s players at our grounds. My strategy involves taking the help of professional local and expat coaches to develop my players,” he added. He also praised the contribution of Duleep Mendis, the Oman national team’s coach. “Oman has the fire to beat the major teams under the leadership of Duleep Mendis; the current team is more capable to handle any kind of situation in the T20 format,” Al Balushi said. He also appreciated the team members who had helped Oman qualify for the upcoming T20 World Cup taking place in India next year.
