A citizen group is lobbying with ministries and authorities for the sake of the disabled

REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: A group of Omanis is working hard to make every beach accessible to the Sultanate’s 60,000 disabled citizens. The group has lobbied with ministries to help with access issues.

At the moment, Oman’s coastline is far from disabled friendly, according to the campaigners. “Disabled people deserve the same rights and respect as nondisabled ones. We need ramps on the beaches for our disabled in Oman, so that they can get to the beach without their wheelchair

getting stuck,” Dr Kawthar Hameed Abdullah, chief executive officer at the Creative Centre for Rehabilitation and a member of the Oman Disabled Association, said. Latest government data reveals that the number of disabled Omanis currently stands at 62,506, or 3 per cent of the total population. Of these, people with walking difficulties constitute 26.8 per cent. According to Abdullah, his group wants to install ramps that can go down to the shoreline as they have in Long Island, New York and some other beaches around the United States and the world. “We plan to install these ramps,

starting hopefully with the Qurum beach. We are in the process of meeting with authorities on how we can accomplish our goals,” he added. Meanwhile, Ahmed Mohammed Al Badi, a board member of the Oman Disabled Association, said all public places in Oman should be made disabled friendly. “Why should disabled people be denied their right to enjoy the beauty of the country? It should not happen. We will try our best to make this plan happen,” Al Badi, who himself is a quadriplegic, told the Times of Oman. A quadriplegic is affected with

paralysis in both arms and legs. Abdullah said they are planning to approach some government organisations to seek help in setting up ramps. “Our plan is to firstly approach the government authorities to see how they can start the project as they will need to give permission for it. Afterwards, we will seek funding for the project. We want to start with the Qurum beach as it is one of the most popular and biggest beaches (in Oman). We would like to put a minimum of three to five ramps in this area, and later add more at other beaches in Muscat,” Abdullah explained. >A3

Oil slip puts construction on the skids Oman swansong for Irish football legend

REJIMON K

reji@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman is facing a construction crisis, according to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of an Omani contractors association. Shahswar G Al Balushi, CEO of the Oman Society of Contractors, said difficult conditions will persist in the construction sector until oil prices — and therefore the economy — recover. “Due to the oil price dip, there are no new projects coming up in Oman. In addition to that, companies carrying out existing projects are facing big trouble with cash inflows, which will eventually lead to salary delays and other issues. “I can’t reveal any numbers, but it is sure that there is a crisis and its worsening when compared with the previous years,” Al Balushi stated. The oil price crisis is hurting cash inflows for construction companies leaving their workers stranded for months without salaries in Oman. A Muscat-based company had to send back 75 workers with oneway tickets without clearing pending salaries and other benefits. At the same company, 125 workers have been stranded without salaries for the last eight months. “Lack of projects due to the current economic conditions led by

the oil price crisis, bills stuck with clients and banks, disputes over ownership and instances of fund misappropriations have put us neck deep in trouble,” the Human Resource Director of the company said, on condition of anonymity. “Meeting daily demands is a big problem,” he added. Staff and salaries, including that of the HR boss, have not been paid since January. When the crisis started, the company had repatriated 75 workers, who were ready to give up pending salaries and take an air ticket home. However, a few who have stayed

back in the hope of receiving unpaid salaries are now worried about food and accommodation. The company had an annual turnover of OMR2 million last year. This year, only one project is running and that too will end in the coming months. “So far, with loans from here and there, we have been able to take care of food for workers. But water and power bills are pending. Soon, they may be disconnected,” the HR manager added. Article 51 of the Oman Labour Law states that employees, who receive their salaries on a month-

Mohammed Farji, a trade union leader in Oman, also said he had come across a similar case last month in Sohar. “Around 150 expatriate workers were stranded without salaries for six continuous months. When the workers approached us, we met with the employer and found an amicable solution to get the workers their dues,” the trade union leader said, adding that workers denied salary and other rights should approach unions and the Ministry of Manpower. >A3

DUBLIN: Irish footballer Robbie Keane will bid farewell to international duty with a friendly match against Oman. The ex-Spurs player announced his retirement on Wednesday after an 18-year career in which he scored 67 goals for his country to put him 15th on the list of all-time international marksmen. The 36-year-old Los Angeles Galaxy striker said in a statement he will retire from international football following Ireland’s friendly against Oman on August 31. “It has been a wonderful journey for me to have played with the Irish team for over 18 years since I made my senior international debut back in 1998,” Keane said. “As a young boy growing up in Dublin playing football on the street, I could never have imaged the path my life would take. It has exceeded my wildest expectations. Keane made his international debut in the Czech Republic in 1998 at the age of 18. It took him just over six years to overtake Niall Quinn as his country’s record goalscorer.
