MUSCAT: Majlis Al Shura’s sessions might be broadcast live for the public again, according to a senior Shura official. “This was suggested by one member and it was considered by the council, but there are a number of procedures that should be followed before announcing such a decision,” said Mohammed Al Ghassani, a member of the Majlis Al Shura’s management office. He added that the council shall address the Public Authority for Radio and Television and check the possibility of broadcasting the session of the council live to people. “The purpose of live broadcast to the public is to ensure transparency and convey the information in a better manner to

the public,” said Al Ghassani. Mohammed Al Kindi, a member of Shura, said all the work of members is not conveyed to the public. “The TV shows only a part of the session, which involves the questioning of ministers, not the entire proceedings.” He explained that the council enjoys a number of privileges that needs to be presented to the public.

“When there is a need to stop the broadcasts, the members can vote and decide,” said Al Kindi. He added that there are many people who should be able to see their issues being addressed in the council. The Majlis Al Shura has implemented a new strategy for tackling public interest topics while holding a session with government officials. “The head of each committee invites experts to get detailed information about the topic,” said Al Ghassani. He said such specialists discuss issues from different aspects allowing the members to raise more points during the session. “This will lead to a more comprehensive discussion on topics involving the public which in turn will lead to a better standard of public satisfaction,” said Al Ghassani.

MUSCAT: Stranded expatriate workers at the Al Sawadi Beach Resort are hoping that a meeting on May 30 — when the Labour Department meets their employer— will end with a positive result for their future. “At the last meeting, the employer didn’t turn up. Hope he comes on May 30. It would be quite hard if he doesn’t do so,” Suleiman Khalid Kazi, the manager of the resort, who is among the 28 stranded workers, told the Times of Oman (TOO). The workers were left in the lurch after it stopped its operations on March 11.

Staff Reporters MUSCAT: An amendment in article No. 112 of the Income-Tax will increase the cost of LNG, and lead to petrochemical and mining companies paying more tax. A joint session of the State Council and Majlis Al Shura, based on the Royal Directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, took place on Thursday and voted on the Income Tax Law, which included amendments in some of the provisions of the Insurance Companies Law and the Foreign Capital Investment Law. The session approved the provisions under dispute during the proposed amendments on the Income Tax Law, the Foreign Capital Investment Law and Insurance Companies Law and submitted to His Majesty the Sultan, together with the opinions of the two houses after examining and discussing them during the session. LNG firms will have to pay 55 per cent tax, instead of 12 per cent. Fighting for the implementation of the new tax, the Shura’s proposal won the vote and raised the LNG firm’s tax to 55 per cent while the State Council had suggested hike to 15 per cent . Moreover, the members at the joint session also voted for imposing a 35 per cent tax on both petrochemical industries and non-oil natural resource exports. However, the vote resulted in the refusal of the proposal to impose a 3 per cent tax on insurance. The

joint session vote approved the amendments made by the Ministers Council on Foreign Capital Investment Law to impose tax, except for industries and investments, based on the suggestion of the concerned minister. “The tax on petrochemical firms has been approved,” Tawfiq Al Lawati, Shura member told the Times of Oman. The tax on producers of LNG is currently 12 per cent. Observers said taxes have been raised by many Gulf countries in order to make up for the losses stemming from the sharp drop in oil prices. >A3
