After failing to plug the leak, the Indian sailors abandoned their boat and it was the timely intervention of Omani fishermen who saved their lives and brought them to the shore

MUSCAT: Eleven Indian sailors were rescued from a sinking cargo ship, thanks to the Omani fishermen who saved their lives on Saturday. “At least for four hours, we were in danger. We thought that we all will drown. However, Omani fishermen came to our rescue,” Abdullah Juma, boat captain, told Times of Oman. The cargo ship, which had 69 used cars, cooking oil and tyres on board, capsized 15 nautical miles from Al Suwaiyeh in Jalan Bu Ali on Saturday early morning. There were 11 Indians on board. “At around 2am, our cargo

the situation went out of control. The water was entering the vessel,” the captain told Times of Oman over phone. After they found that they can’t fix the vessel, they took safety boats and waited for the rescue.

“By morning, Omani fishermen on 25 boats found us. They came to our rescue. We all tried to salvage the cargo, but nothing could be done. We waited until 11am and then came to the shore,” the captain added. Meanwhile, members of Pravasi Jalan, an Indian social organisation coordinating the local authorities, said that accommodation for the rescued crew has been arranged. “We have booked hotel rooms for them. They have their passports and all. But they have lost their dress and other things. In coordination with local authorities and Indian embassy, paper works will be done for their repatriation,” the organisation members said. >A6

Boom in Al Mouj Muscat sales abroad SYED HAITHAM HASAN

haitham@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Al Mouj Muscat has sold more properties to clients abroad this year since sales started in 2006, with nearly a third of its properties being bought by people living outside Oman. Such sales accounted for less than 5 per cent until last year, according to Nasser Al Sheibani, chief executive (CEO) of Al Mouj Muscat. Its most expensive villa and apartment, costing more than OMR3 million and OMR700,000 respectively, were also sold to clients overseas this year, Al Sheibani said, adding that the promotional strategies used by Al Mouj Muscat seem to have paid off well and that the economic downturn has not affected their sales efforts so far. “Until 2015, we were promoting ourselves largely inside Oman and nearly 95 per cent of our clients were in the local market. In 2016, we changed our strategy to market ourselves outside Oman and we were surprised to see that most people weren’t even aware of a place like Oman, let alone its beauty and receptiveness.” He said they developed different strategies to promote Oman, some of which included inviting clients in the country. >A6
