Officials will help find work for those from war-torn regions and ask them to sign a pact promising to stop begging

tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Expat beggars from conflict zones will not be sent back to their home countries unless they are caught a second time, authorities have said. A clampdown on beggars during Ramadan had resulted in 31 children under the age of 12 being rounded up with their parents. Most of them were from outside Oman and from countries that are conflict-ridden. Faced with the choice of

repatriating them to their war-torn countries, Omani authorities have instead chosen to ask them to sign an agreement promising to stop begging. The authorities will also help parents find work so that they can earn money legitimately. When a prison sentence is required, mothers and their children are kept together in special “mother and child” detention units in Oman. Only after a second offence is committed do the authorities consider deportation, according to a spokesman

which the ministry takes action, based on the individual’s circumstances. Beggars are assessed and if the study shows that the beggar is in fact in need of social help and is eligible for social welfare, the ministry guarantees that they receive welfare. If the study finds that the beggar is capable of working, but does not have a job, the MoSD will coordinate with the Ministry of Manpower to find a job opportunity for him. Those who have a good social and economic situation must refrain from begging and the ministry will refer them to the appropriate authority to help them get involved in a commercial project to increase their income. A small number of beggars, who do not follow the law and repeatedly beg, end up with a fine and jail time. >A3

Call for clean-up as plastic from sunken vessel lands in Masirah Times News Service MUSCAT: Hundreds of plastic bottles have turned Masirah beaches blue and green. Since last Sunday, plastic materials from a sunken vessel near the turtle nesting beaches have been washing ashore. Environmentalists are now gathering for a massive clean-up on the Omani island. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA) confirmed the small ship was not carrying any hazardous materials. The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) called via their twitter for an urgent cleanup campaign which started on Thursday morning and end Saturday to pick up the plastic trash. In a post, ESO asked volunteers to arrange their own transportation and accommodation.

from the Social and Welfare Department. ‘Struggling with life’ and ‘poor’ are some of the reasons beggars cite in the Sultanate when they resort to asking for money from the public, said an official from the Ministry of Social Development (MoSD). Last month, MoSD had arrested 330 beggars in different wilayats in Oman. Most of them were men, but some were women with their children. When asked about the reasons for resorting to beggary, some said they were facing difficult circumstances and others said they were just poor. A MoSD spokesman said: “They are mostly foreigners from war torn countries nearby. They said they are struggling and are poor.” MoSD has a system in place, which assesses the beggar’s situation, after

MUSCAT: Lower temperatures experienced over the past few days in Muscat will rise during this week, meteorologists have predicted. “There will be a slight increase in temperature from today until Wednesday. We are expecting the maximum temperature to touch around 37 degree Celsius. The internal areas will be hotter than coastal areas,” a senior meteorologist at Accuweather.com told the Times of Oman yesterday. The Oman Meteorological Department had also said in a recent forecast that the mercury will rise again by three to five degree Celsius until Sunday. The BBC’s Weather forecast stated the temperature level for next week will hover between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. Temperatures in Muscat had slipped since last week due to the heavy rainfall that was reported in many parts of the Sultanate. The temperature recorded in Muscat on Friday was 32 degree Celsius, according to meteorological websites. As per the statistics of Accuweather.com, this is the first time that temperature levels have been recorded below 35 degrees during this summer. “Weather is very pleasant now; we can easily enjoy the daytime under the sun without any harm,” Sunil Kumar said.“A few days back the weather was just opposite.” “I was happy to see the weather is so good this weekend, which will help us plan an outing; last week planning an outing was not at all possible,” Aneesh Thomas said. The Oman Meteorological Department also predicted that the skies over the coastal areas of the Dhofar governorate and adjoining mountains will also be cloudy.
