reji@timesofoman.com tariqh@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Hikers exploring unmarked terrain in the mountains and valleys of Oman should be escorted by experienced guides, warned police and experts following the death of a British woman in her thirties who went missing in Wadi Samini near Mahdha, Al Buraimi, on Saturday. “Safe trekking paths on mountains in Oman are marked by the Ministry of Tourism. Those paths that are unmarked are unsafe. Hiking on those unmarked mountain trails should be done only with the help of guides who have safety gears, or else hikers will be risking their lives,” said Khalid Al Anqoodi, an experienced mountaineer who leads bi-weekly group hikes for the Oman Mountain Club and has scaled several mountains in and around the region, during an interview with the Times of Oman. The British woman, belonging to a 12-member hiking group including Arab and non-Arab nationals, had gone missing on Sat-

urday evening in the mountains of Wadi Samini near Mahdha. The Royal Oman Police found the woman’s body on Sunday morning after an extensive search was launched with the help of helicopters. The woman died from dehydration and exposure to extreme heat. An official from the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulances described the area as “a mountainous and rocky region where people can get lost easily if they don’t know the area”.

“These kinds of trips are risky. Adventurers should always go in a group with people who are experienced in these kinds of ventures. They should also collaborate with people who are not part of the group by using social media and let people know where they are. When you feel you are in danger, call the police immediately,” said the official. On Saturday, four of the 12-member group were initially reported missing. However, by late in the evening police had rescued three of the hikers. >A6 TOP THREE INSIDE STORIES

REPORTED CASES

More people take HIV test due to awareness Staff Reporter MUSCAT: Reducing social stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS is one of the factors responsible for higher number of cases being reported in Oman, the Ministry of Health has said. Increased health education at all levels helped reduce the stigma, the ministry stated in its Annual Health Report 2013. “Though Omani cases had decreased in 2013, overall cases of HIV/AIDS increased compared to 2012,” the report said. The total number of cases registered among Omanis during 2013 stood at 103, with 75 of them being males. A total of 127 cases were registered in 2012. The report shows that 31 deaths took place due to AIDS during 2013, down from 36 in 2012. Of these 31 deaths, 23 were related to cases registered in previous years and eight were related to cases registered in 2013. By the end of 2013, 1,511 Omani individuals were living with HIV, according to the ministry’s report. In addition to reduced stigma, the ministry attributed the increase in overall number of registered cases to the application of medical protocols of confidentiality regarding the results of examinations and the use of records only for management purposes. Availability of treatment at health institutions is another factor, the report said, adding that this encouraged patients to visit health institutions for HIV testing. According to the report, continuing high risk behaviour in

certain sections of the community led to an increase in overall reported cases as well. AIDS control programme The AIDS control programme was established in 1987 and 2,394 were registered among Omanis between 1986 until the end of 2013. The ministry has repeatedly warned people against high-risk practices and advises those engaging in such behaviour to have themselves tested and undergo treatment to prevent the transmission of this disease to others. Experts say early diagnosis can result in timely treatment, prevention of complications, and an improved prognosis for people infected with HIV.
