Negligence, say social media A1 users; call for solutions < FROM
One user tweeted, “Unfortunately these accidents happen as a result of negligence. What is the role of the supervisor? Why don’t they check the buses on arrival and departure?” Another twitter user questioned whether the school had an attendance sheet, “Where is the bus driver? “Why didn’t he check the bus and where is the school administration? Isn’t there an attendance sheet?” Some users called for better training of bus drivers as well as finding better solutions to prevent such accidents from reoccurring. “It is important to have strict safety procedures to train the bus drivers and supervisors as well
as a test to see how efficient they are,” one Omani tweeted. Others called for the responsible people to be punished by law. “The death of this child should open up an ‘real’ investigation against the people responsible and punishing them as well as the supervisors for allowing this to happen.” Suffocation Last September, a four-year-old girl died from suffocation after being left alone on a bus in Bid Bid, near Nizwa. Following the tragedy, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) came up with an online campaign to ensure the safety of children. “Bus drivers should make sure that all the children have disem-
barked from the bus before they lock and leave the vehicle,” the ROP tweeted on its official Twitter handle at that time. In 2014, two children died in similar incidents. “Transporting children is a job which needs extra care. The children always need some help, and only a few of them can handle the situation alone. So, we should be more careful and alert,” N S Rajeev, a transporter working for the last 30 years in Muscat, said. According to Rajeev, an assistant is a must in school buses and he should take extra care over the safety of the children. “Children are of small age. They need support. We have to take care of them, or else such incidents will repeat,” Rajeev said.

SANAA/HODEIDAH: An air raid by an Arab coalition killed 60 people in Yemen, including inmates of a prison near the city of Hodeidah, medical sources said. The prison held 84 inmates when it was struck three times late on Saturday, Hashem Al Azizi, deputy governor of the province of Hodeidah, told Reuters. The Saudi-led alliance that conducted the raid said it struck a “central security building” used as a military command centre by the Houthi rebels it is fighting. Local officials said the prison lies within a security complex but that only prison guards were present during the air strike. “This building is used by Houthi militia and the forces of the deposed president as a command and control centre for their military operations,” a statement by the coalition said, referring to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, a Houthi ally. “The coalition forces’ leadership stresses that targeting protocols and procedures were followed fully,” the statement said. The Saudi-led coalition has been fighting Yemen’s Houthi
movement since March 2015. It wants to restore the internationally recognised president, AbdRabbu Mansour Hadi, who was driven into exile by the Houthis in late 2014. A Reuters witness at the security complex said the building was destroyed and medics pulled about 17 bodies away, many of them missing limbs. Others remained trapped under the rubble. One of the strikes directly targeted the building, the witness said, bringing it down over the heads of the prisoners. Two others hit the gate of the complex and nearby administration buildings. The air attack was one of the deadliest among thousands of bombings. The attacks have largely failed to dislodge the Houthis from the capital, Sanaa, but have repeatedly hit schools, markets, hospitals and homes, killing many civilians. Rights groups have said the raids may amount to war crimes, but an investigative body set up by the coalition largely defended its methods in an August report, which concluded that Houthi rebels regularly deploy to civilian sites. The Houthis deny this, and a
top official in the movement criticised the United Nations and the United States for not doing enough to hold the kingdom accountable for its air strikes. “We condemn the position of the international community and the UN for providing cover for the crimes,” Saleh Al Samad said in a statement late on Saturday. The bombing may signal a renewed outbreak of violence a day after Hadi rejected a new UN peace proposal, saying the deal would only be a path to more war and destruction. Speaking after a meeting with UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed in Riyadh, Hadi said the agreement would “reward the rebels and penalise the Yemeni people and legitimacy”, according to the government-controlled Saba news agency. According to a copy of the proposal seen by Reuters, the plan would sideline Hadi and set up a government of less divisive figures. Hadi’s oponents accuse him of commanding only a small support base in Yemen and of being unable to bring its warring factions together, since he invited the Saudi-led coalition to intervene in the civil war. — Reuters

IS suspects plotting attacks held in Saudi Arabia DUBAI: Saudi Arabia has arrested at least eight suspected militants plotting killings and a car bombing, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday, and authorities were pursuing other accomplices. A ministry statement said those arrested included IS suspects who had planned killings of security officials in the Shaqra district north of the capital Riyadh. Other militants had planned to attack civilians in the eastern city of Qatif and stage a car bomb attack on a visiting United Arab Emirates (UAE) football team at a stadium in the western port city of Jeddah, the statement said. The statement said the eight arrested suspects included two Pakistanis, a Syrian and a Sudanese. Eight Saudis and a Bahraini were among the suspects still at large, it said. Saudi security forces have grappled with sporadic attacks by adherents to the ultra-hardline IS militant group, which is based in Iraq and Syria, and say they have arrested hundreds of its members. Local Saudi affiliates of IS have carried out several deadly shootings and bombings in the kingdom. Many of the attacks have targeted security personnel and mosques. Security officer killed Meanwhile, a Saudi security officer was killed and a second was wounded on Sunday in a drive-by shooting in the Eastern Province city of Qatif, state-owned Al Arabiya television reported. The shooting occurred while the security men were on patrol, Al Arabiya said. It gave no information about the assailants. Gunmen shot dead two security officers last week on a residential street in nearby Dammam. Another two were gunned down in Dammam in September. Eastern Province is home to much of Saudi Arabia’s oil production. Militants have attacked security forces in Eastern Province in the past. — Reuters

remarks while celebrating Diwali with army and ITBP men in Sumdo in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district. Earlier, in his monthly “Mann ki Baat” programme on All India Radio, Modi asked the people and the state governments to find ways of forging unity across the country and work to defeat separatist tendencies and mentalities. He hailed the people including celebrities for sending overwhelming messages to his “Sandesh2Soldiers” campaign. In the wake of ongoing unrest in Kashmir Valley, he said, “Unity in diversity is our strength. It is the responsibility of every citizen and all governments to forge unity and curb separatist tendencies to save the country.” In an apparent reference to tension on the Indo-Pak border, Modi credited the soldiers for maintenance of peace and security in the country and called upon everyone to remember their
gallantry while celebrating Diwali. “In the wake of recent events, our soldiers have been sacrificing their everything for the safety and security of the country. Their dedication and labour has overwhelmed me completely. Let us dedicate this Diwali to our armed forces. “I had invited everyone to participate in the Sandesh2Soldiers campaign and I have been humbled by the response. From students, villagers and traders to political leaders and sports persons, everyone has sent a Diwali message for our soldiers,” he said while referring to the jawans who are stationed in deserts and on the icy heights of the Himalayas and security personnel who are guarding our industries and airports. In a veiled reference to the unrest in Valley, the prime minister also called for forces of unity to be strengthened and those of separatism to be defeated. - PTI

Buckling under relentless pressure, the government on Saturday sent its Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid packing after preliminary investigations established a ‘lapse’ on his part.
SECURITY LEAK
Pervaiz Rashid should have told Almeida ‘not to run false story’: Nisar ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid should have stopped the ‘false’ Dawn report regarding a high-level security meeting from being published, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said. “Pervaiz Rashid should have told the journalist concerned that the story is incorrect, and should not be published in national inter-
est… upon resistance he could have asked the editor of the newspaper, Zafar Abbas, not to run the story,” Nisar told reporters on Sunday. Buckling under relentless pressure, the government on Saturday sent its information minister packing after preliminary investigations established a ‘lapse’ on his part. The interior minister termed the events quoted in the story, i.e.
a dispute between Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the Inter-Services Intelligence chief over action against ‘non-state actors’, as absolutely baseless. “There has always been a consensus between the civil-military leadership on non-state actors,” he upheld. Nisar said the decision to remove the information minister was taken after initial findings
into the matter, with the army being taken into confidence. A complete inquiry is till pending, added the minister. “A high power committee will probe ‘Dawn leaks’ and those responsible will be exposed. No one should attempt to hide behind the right to information act and the right to protect sources… This is a matter of national security,” Nisar said, suggesting Almeida
will be questioned by the inquiry committee. The minister said he was assured by representatives of Dawn that Almeida will be available for questioning. “Else, the law will take its course.” Rashid’s sacking came barely 48 hours after an unusual meeting of senior government functionaries with army chief General Raheel Sharif at the Army House. The gov-
ernment refuted the story as ‘false and fabricated’ not once, not twice but thrice. The repeated denials, however, failed to satisfy the military which called for unmasking those who had planted the story. Reacting to the interior minister’s press conference, Imran Khan said there was a dire need to find out all those responsible behind the security leak. -Express Tribune

With thousands already made homeless, a leading seismologist warned that the earthquakes could go on for weeks in a domino effect along the central Apennine fault system.
Powerful quake hits central Italy Panicked Norcia residents rushed into the streets and the town’s ancient Basilica of St. Benedict collapsed
NORCIA (ITALY): A powerful earthquake struck Italy on Sunday in the same central regions that have been rocked by repeated tremors over the past two months, with
more homes and churches brought down but no deaths reported. The quake, which measured 6.6 according to the US Geological Survey, was bigger than one on August 24 that killed almost 300 people. Many people have fled the area since then, helping to avoid a new devastating death toll. With thousands already made homeless, a leading seismologist warned that the earthquakes could go on for weeks in a domino effect along the central Apennine fault system. The latest quake was felt across much of Italy, striking at 7.40 am (0640 GMT), its epicentre close to the historic Umbrian walled town of Norcia, some 100 km (60 miles) from the university city of Perugia. Panicked Norcia residents
rushed into the streets and the town’s ancient Basilica of St. Benedict collapsed, leaving just the facade standing. Nuns, monks and locals sank to their knees in the main square in silent prayer before the shattered church. “This is a tragedy. It is a coup de grace. The basilica is devastated,” Bishop Renato Boccardo of Norcia told Reuters. “Everyone has been suspended in a never-ending state of fear and stress. They are at their wits’ end,” said Boccardo, referring to the thousands of tremors that have rattled the area since August, including two serious quakes on Wednesday. Italy’s Civil Protection unit, which coordinates disaster relief, said numerous houses were destroyed on Sunday in the regions
of Umbria and Marche, but either they were deserted at the time or most of the residents managed to escape in time. Civil Protection chief Fabrizio Curcio said no deaths had been reported and around 20 people were injured, none of them critically. He said it was too early to say how many more people had lost their homes. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi promised a massive reconstruction effort regardless of cost and took advantage of the disaster to resume his frequent criticism of the European Union’s public finance rules. “We will rebuild everything, the houses, the churches and the businesses,” he told reporters. “Everything that needs to be done to rebuild these areas will be done.” He said he would have “no re-
gard for technocratic rules” and would consider all money spent to make Italy’s schools and hospitals earthquake-proof to be outside EU limits on budget deficits. Local authorities said towns and villages already battered by August’s 6.2 quake had suffered further significant damage. “This morning’s quake has hit the few things that were left standing. We will have to start from scratch,” Michele Franchi, the deputy mayor of Arquata del Tronto, told Rai television. Experts said Sunday’s quake was the strongest here since a 6.9 quake in Italy’s south in 1980 that killed 2,735 people. The destruction of the Norcia basilica was the single most significant loss of Italy’s artistic heritage
in an earthquake since a tremor in 1997 caused the collapse of the ceiling of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, which is 80 km to the north. A number of other churches were also ruined on Sunday, Italian media reported, including Norcia’s Cattedrale di Santa Maria, which was built in the 16th century, while the town hall belltower had deep cracks running through its walls. However, most of Norcia’s homes appeared to have withstood the prolonged tremor, with residents praising years of investment by local authorities in anti-seismic protection. In the nearby city of Rieti, patients were evacuated from a hospital to allow experts to check on structural damage, while hillroads across the region were littered with fallen rocks. — Reuters

The consequences of a Trump shock W
ith the United States’ presidential election on November 8, and a series of elections and other political decisions fast approaching in Europe, now is a good time to ask whether the global economy is in good enough shape to withstand another major negative shock. The answer, unfortunately, is that growth and employment around the world look fragile. A big adverse surprise — like the election of Donald Trump in the US — would likely cause the stock market to crash and plunge the world into recession. There is always a great deal of insight in the International Monetary Fund’s semi-annual economic outlook, which is based on detailed data from around the world. And, because the latest version was published in early October, it is particularly relevant. (I was previously the IMF’s chief economist and oversaw the forecasting process, but I left that position in August 2008.) Table 1.1 of the Fund’s World Economic Outlook covers the main points: a baseline forecast of 3.1 per cent global GDP growth this year and 3.4 per cent in 2017. This represented a nudge down from the projections in April, with signs of weakening perceived in the US, the eurozone, and of course the United Kingdom (grappling with the consequences of impending Brexit — the big and potentially traumatic step of leaving the European Union). The most obvious dark cloud on the global horizon is Europe. The British issues are not helping, but the deeper issues continue to be related to the eurozone itself (Britain never adopted the euro). The headline growth number in Spain is somewhat encouraging, continuing to show some rebound. But the ongoing gloom about Italy – the third-largest eurozone economy, growing at less than 1 per cent per year – is a serious matter. Compounding these macroeconomic issues is the continuing pressure on eurozone banks. These banks have never fully recovered from earlier losses, and their equity capital levels remain low relative to international competitors (like the US) and to what investors regard as reasonable. The bigger problem remains uncertainty about who is on the hook if a bank’s losses imply potential insolvency. These banks are clearly too big to fail – no European government in its right mind would allow a default on bank debt. But there is no agreement on how to share bank losses across
countries. Taken as a whole, the eurozone has enough fiscal capacity to stand behind its banks. But, unfortunately, doing so is still a country-bycountry decision — the collective mechanisms for recapitalizing European banks remain partial and far too weak. Compounding these difficulties, growth in middle-income emerging markets is not strong. Slower growth in these countries is reflected in lower projected imports and lower expected commodity prices, which will negatively affect countries that export raw materials and energy resources. The Nigerian economy, just to take one example, is expected to contract by 1.7 per cent this year. Growth in the US, as reported by the IMF, was 2.6 per cent in 2015, and is forecast to slip to 1.6 per cent this year before rebounding slightly to 2.2 per cent in 2017. There has been a long steady recovery from the 2008 financial crisis, but the effects of that collapse still linger. Trump promises to boost US growth immediately to 4-5 per cent, but this is pure fantasy. It is far more likely that his anti-trade policies would cause a sharp slowdown, much like the British are experiencing. In fact, the impact of a Trump victory on the US could well be worse. Whereas British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government wants to close the UK’s borders to immigrants from the EU, it does want trade with the world. Trump, on the other hand, is determined to curtail imports through a variety of policies, all of which are well within the power of a president. He would not need congressional approval to slam the brakes on the Even in the best of times, US policymakers often do not think enough about the impact of their actions on the rest of the world. Trump’s trade-led recession would tip Europe back into full-blown recession, which would likely precipitate a serious banking crisis. If this risk were not contained – and the probability of a European banking debacle is already disconcertingly high – there would be a further negative spiral. Either way, the effects on emerging markets and all lower-income countries would be dramatic. Investors in the stock market currently regard a Trump presidency as a relatively low-probability development. But, while the precise consequences of bad policies are always hard to predict, if investors are wrong and Trump wins, we should expect a big markdown in expected future earnings for a wide range of stocks – and a likely crash in the broader market. - Project Syndicate

CAR DRIFTING COMPETITION MADE FRIDAY NIGHT A BLARING ONE
T
he tyres on the cars are shrieking as the drivers jerk their car sideways at nearly 90mph on the specially designed track by Red Bull Athlete and Rally Champion Abdo Feghali at the premises of Oman Automobile Association in Seeb. Walls are closing in on either side, leaving no room for mistakes. As the turns near, drivers pump the clutch and pull the hand brake. The rear wheels lose traction, sending the car into a power slide while unleashing a flood of smoke into the packed grandstands. The move brings nearly 1,000 fans and spectators to their feet. This is what they came to see: Drifting. In the terrifying and smoky showdown, Ali Al Balushi was crowned Oman’s ‘King of Drift’ for the fourth consecutive year at the Red Bull Car Park Drift Oman Qualifier. The champion drifter, after taking first place with 387 points, will go on to represent Oman in front of a home crowd at the finals hosted by the Sultanate in December. Second place was awarded to first time competitor Haitham Al Hadidy (385 points) and third
place to Tarek Al Shaihani (382 points). At just 18 years of age, Haitham Al Hadidy took second place just two points behind Ali Al Balushi. Born on the streets of Japan in the 1970s, competitive and street car drifting is quickly becoming a must-have passenger or viewer experience. Drifting has nothing to do with racing. There’s no checkered flag. It’s more like figure skating than speed skating, with a four-judge panel awarding points based on speed, angle of attack, and style. Drifting requires a particular set of skills, including outstanding reflexes, exceptional hand and feet coordination and the ability not to lose focus. They take points away for going off course, running into course
markers — including walls and for driving straight. The goal is to control the car as it slides sideways around turns, as if on ice, at full throttle. The Red Bull Car Park Drift Oman Qualifier, now in its seventh year, showcased 16 of the Sultanate’s most skilful drifters as they battled it out at speed on the twists and turns of a challenging track. For car drifting the Japanese automobile are often favourites such as Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota. Speaking after being announced as the winner, Ali Al Balushi said: “I’m so happy to take home first place for the fourth year. I can’t wait to compete for the regional title in front of all my family, friends, and supporters in December. At the finals last year I came second, I promise this year
it will be first.” “It was an amazing experience and I feel so happy to have won second place in my very first competition,” said the young drifter Haitham Al Hadidy. The drifter’s skills were put to the test as the judges evaluated their every move. The judges looked for an impressive exterior and smoke, how accurately the competitors followed the track, how well they continuously drifted, and much more. Red Bull Car Park Drift is considered as the region’s greatest drifting event and a highlight of the Middle East’s motorsports calendar. It showcases the top drifters from across the region and aims to bring the public closer to the world of action sports. –mobinmathew@timesofoman.com

Brakes Stop Your Car, Brakes Make Your Car Go
IF YOU THOUGHT that brakes only work to make your car stop and can be taken lightly when it comes to maintenance, think again. Brakes are one of the most vital components in any car that not only make your car stop when you want but are also responsible for driver and passenger’s safety. So it is essential to ensure that yours are working properly to ride safely. Brakes are subject to wear and tear like any other car part, just a little more. Brakes are at work every time you slow down or stop. You may be using your brakes even more if you drive in the city or difficult terrain. Fortunately, great auto brands have given us ways and means to identify brake trouble before it takes you by surprise in the middle of the road. Read on to identify the common

signs that the brakes on your car are in trouble and need attention. Brake Wear Indicator Most cars have audible brake wear indicators on all 4 wheels. Brake pads that require to be replaced will make a screeching sound when you stop the car. The screeching will become constant if you leave it as it is. If left unattended for a very long time, you are compromising safety. Brake Fluid Low brake fluid could be the result of leaking fluid or worn out brakes. Moisture in the brake fluid can wear out seals. To prevent moisture, flushing with a good quality brake fluid is recommended. Brake Pads Brake rotors perform optimally with brake pads. This is because
car brake pads are rigorously tested and designed to perform in all environments. They are designed to prevent premature disc wear and minimise noise. If you are looking for best brake pads or other parts, buy only from reputed sellers. Brake Rotors Brake rotors dispel the heat from the pads on application of brakes. Brake rotors are built to last so that they can endure long periods of wear and help prevent overheating and warping. Aftermarket replacements may seem cheaper initially but may not fit well. In addition, they can cause damage to the vehicle and can be a safety hazard too. Genuine parts and accessories are designed to fit your car specifically and perform perfectly with other parts and components in that vehicle. — Artipot

Mergers and acquisitions in Mena region touch $27b Times News Service MUSCAT: As many as 55 mergers and acquisition deals, worth $26.6 billion, have been reported in the Middle East region so far this year, according to Mergermarket, a global provider of M&A intelligence. The values of the agreements have increased by 238.1 per cent, compared to the same period in 2015 (54 deals, $7.9 billion), while the deal count has remained consistent, noted a press release. The latest data has been released ahead of the Saudi Arabia M&A and Capital Markets Forum, to be held in Riyadh on November 16. Value of agreements The value of the agreements was highly influenced by the largest transaction in the region so far this year - National Bank of Abu Dhabi PJSC’s (NBAD) $14.8 billion acquisition of UAE-based First Gulf Bank (FGB) — accounting for 55.6 per cent of the Middle East’s total M&A value, and pushing the Financial Services sector to the top of the industry rankings. The contract will come into effect in the first quarter of 2017 through a share swap, with FGB shareholders receiving 1.254 NBAD shares for each FGB share they hold. At that point, FGB will be delisted from the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange. Even without taking this agreement into account, Middle Eastern M&A activity (54 deals, $11.8 billion) would still have registered a 49.5 per cent value increase, year-on-year. Meanwhile, the transport and consumer sectors saw increased deal values, compared to the previous year. This trend was driven by German-based Hapag-Lloyd AG’s acquisition of United Arab Shipping Company for $5.4 billion, which helped boost the transport sector’s share to 20.6 per cent ($5.5 billion). Nine deals in the consumer sector contributed to a total value of $3.5 billion, up from just $175 million in 2015.

‘New mining law to speed up processing of licences’ It will bring more clarity to help mining firms to avoid project delays, according to a toplevel official of a leading mining firm.

businesseditor@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: The new mining law, which will be announced soon, is expected to speed up processing of mining licences and bring
more clarity to help mining firms to avoid project delays, according to a top-level official of a leading mining firm. “I believe that the ability to get access to new projects is going to be enhanced and speeded up. We would like to have clarity so that we can plan long-term projects,” Dean Cunningham, chief executive officer of Kunooz Oman Holding, told the Times of Oman. He said that a mining licence application processing time, needs to be streamlined and to be reduced to a shorter period as possible so mining companies can plan effectively, which “we believe will be addressed once the new law becomes effective.” Oman’s new mining law, which was recently drafted by the Public Authority for Mining (PAM) and is awaiting approvals from relevant ministries, will help attract investment and develop the

So, international companies can bring their expertise and gain access to the market. Our perception is that the process will be streamlined and user friendly and will enhance competition and access to capital,” noted Cunningham. He also said that when an international investors looks for investment opportunity in Oman, it is simultaneously looking at other projects globally. als like gypsum, limestone and marble. However, to date these assets remain untouched and the investors have significant value expectations that cannot be met or funded due to limited size by the major mining companies here in Oman. The new mining law is expected to be more transparent and clear to facilitate smooth transfer of these licences to companies who have technical and financial capabilities for developing mines. Meanwhile, Kunooz Oman Holding, a leading player in mining, quarrying, transportation and construction material sectors, has applied for mining and exploration licences in three locations from the Public Authority for Mining (PAM). The plan is to go for open-cast mining in all three places, with an extensive downstream project in one location to produce value-added products.

Oman plans to build water project in Khasab A E JAMES
businesseditor@timesofoman.com MUSCAT: Oman plans to build a new independent water project (IWP) with a desalination capacity of 16,000 cubic metres of water per day in Khasab. The Oman Power and Water
Procurement Company (OPWP) has floated a tender on Sunday to pre-qualify companies to participate in the tender. “The IWP is to be developed as a private sector project by an appropriate qualified developer. OPWP is announcing the launch of the request for qualification document,” said
OPWP in a tender announcement. The request for quotation (RfQ) is available for purchase from OPWP until November 13 and the deadline for submission is December 11. The new project in Khasab is part of a series of small and large water projects planned in dif-
ferent parts of the country since there is a robust growth in demand for water. The Sultanate is developing independent water projects in Salalah, Shaqiyah and Duqm, which will together add 52.8 million imperial gallons per day of new capacity to the country’s rapidly expanding domestic
water generation capacity. Demand for potable water in Oman’s northern region, which includes the Muscat governorate, is projected to grow by 6 per cent per annum in the next five years, from 238 million cubic metres in 2013 to 349 million cubic metres by 2020.

Saudi stocks rise Saudi Arabian stocks rose the most among Gulf equities, poised to extend their longest winning streak in more than two years on investor optimism the outlook for the Kingdom’s banks is improving. Four of the five biggest contributors to an increase in the Tadawul All Share Index were lenders, as the main gauge added 0.7 per cent at 1:15 p.m. in Riyadh. The measure has increased 9.5 per cent in eight days, the longest string of gains since 2014, as Saudi Arabia sold the largest international sovereign bond in emerging-market history and said it would boost payments to contractors. The amount banks charge to lend each other in Saudi fell for the first trading week in 14 in the five days through Thursday in a sign the Kingdom’s cash squeeze may be easing after the government pledged to inject $5.3 billion into its banks. The rate had climbed to the highest since January 2009 as the government increased borrowing amid the plunge in oil prices that sent the country’s budget deficit to the widest since 1992. The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, as the central bank is known, said it is introducing 90-day repurchase agreements starting this week to “enhance the domestic monetary conditions.” -United Securities/Bloomberg News

Sohar Freezone CEO Jamal T. Aziz summed up the sentiment at Sohar this week: “It is easy to forget just how far we have come in such a short space of time; our first ship only berthed in 2004,

NOKIA SALES DROP 6% IN THIRD QUARTER Nokia reported a six per cent decline in sales and warned that waning demand for wireless-network equipment will continue to weigh on revenue this quarter. The stock slumped. Third-quarter sales fell to 6 billion euros ($6.5 billion), led by a 12 per cent drop in network revenue, Nokia said in a statement on Thursday. Analysts estimated 5.86 billion euros on average. Earnings of 4 cents a share were in line with predictions. — Bloomberg News

Facebook told to stop exploiting WhatsApp data European Union (EU) privacy chiefs said Facebook must stop processing user data from its WhatsApp messaging service while they are investigating the privacy policy changes the company announced in August. The Article 29 Working Party, made up of privacy chiefs from across the 28-nation EU, told Facebook it had “serious concerns” about the sharing of WhatsApp users’ data for purposes that were not included in the terms of service and privacy policy when existing users signed up to the service, according to a statement e-mailed on Friday. European privacy watchdogs don’t shy away from targeting big US technology firms, as previous probes into Facebook, Alphabet’s Google or Microsoft have shown. Only their fining powers still lack teeth, which is going to change under new EU rules that will take effect across the bloc in 2018 with penalties possible of as much as 4 per cent of a company’s global annual sales. “We’re working with data protection authorities to address their questions,” WhatsApp said in an e-mailed statement. “We’ve had constructive conversations, including before our update, and we remain committed to respecting applicable law.” — Bloomberg News

Apple launches watch with new features The Series 2 is notable for its minimal design around a steel gray aluminium case and clean graphics on the small black mirrored face of the watch. It is markedly pared back in look and less complicated to use than other runningoriented watches.

PPLE has released the newest update to its watch, the Apple Watch Nike+. The new timepiece, in 38mm($369) or 42mm-wide ($399) models, is the latest innovation in the long line of running-related apparatus that Nike started producing in 2006, when runners could connect iPod play lists to devices embedded in their shoes. “We have been working on this project in some way or another since day one,” said Stefan Olander,
The other devices that are out there are pretty techy and geeky—so we wanted to remove everything that was a distraction and keep it clean, elegant and also let it be a delight to use Stefan Olander

the head of Nike’s Digital Sport division. The Series 2 is notable for its minimal design around a steel gray aluminium case and clean graphics on the small black mirrored face of the watch. It is markedly pared back in look and less complicated to use than other running-oriented watches. “The other devices that are out there are pretty techy and geeky— so we wanted to remove everything that was a distraction and keep it clean, elegant and also let it be a delight to use,” Olander said. “We were looking at the aspiring runner and thinking about how can we de-
sign something that looked like an invitation to run.” This next iteration includes all the same functionality as the Series 1 but adds a twice-as-bright display on the screen, plus extended water resistance to 50 metres and waterlock, which prevents false taps on the screen while washing dishes or swimming. It also has a series of weather updates, messaging, and health-monitoring enhancements along with updated routing maps for swimming and other off-road endeavours. One new programme runs through a series of breathing exercises much as the type yogis
use during meditation. You use the Nike+ Run Club app to set the watch specifically to compare your weekly mileage against friends who have the same watch or to set alerts that tell you when to run, and how far, to reach fitness goals—the main idea being to give runners a sense of community even if they typically train alone. You can even activate little soundbite recordings from Nike’s current pet running ambassador Kevin Hart encouraging you along your run. “One of the things that comes back loud and clear from feedback from our runners is that it’s not that easy to stay motivated—a lot of people need a little extra push,” Olander said. “Traditional watches are one-way interactions. They don’t really communicate with you. But we wanted to make this feel like a running partner.” That part is certainly true, as I discovered on a four-mile jog along Manhattan’s East River this morning: Apple Watch Nike+ has builtin GPS system that tracks pacing, distance, heart rate and routes even if you don’t have your iPhone with you. (The two are synced in a lengthy process—too lengthy in my opinion; it took me 30 minutes— when you first buy the watch.) Apple Watch Nike+ is the fourth version of Series 2 Apple watch. It follows the Standard, Hermès, and Apple Edition versions that were launched earlier this year, and it is available in four colour combinations involving black or white rubber sport-band style straps and gray aluminum cases, each with Nike trademark “volt” yellow or gray highlights. Buy it online or at Nike and Apple stores. — Bloomberg News
LinkedIn reported profit that beat analysts’ estimates, as the company works to close a $26.2 billion sale to Microsoft Corporation profit excluding some items was $1.18 per share in the quarter, the company said in a statement, compared with the average analyst forecast for 93 cents. LinkedIn said third-quarter revenue was $959.8 million, up 23 per cent from a year earlier, driven by its business for helping recruiters find talent. The average analyst estimate was $961 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. LinkedIn said it has 106 million unique visiting members a month. LinkedIn is wrapping up its last months as an independent company, planning its integration with Microsoft. The company’s deal is still being reviewed by regulators. Salesforce. com Inc., which was also a bidder for LinkedIn, has been urging the European Union to take a close look at the deal. Still, LinkedIn has said it expects the deal to close before the end of the year. The company sold to Microsoft after disclosing in February that it would grow more slowly than expected. By combining, LinkedIn would have access to more users through Microsoft’s network of business clients, while Microsoft would have information on professional connections it could use to improve its services. “As we look forward, our combination with Microsoft creates the opportunity for us to dramatically increase the impact and scale with which we deliver value to our members and customers,” Chief Executive Officer Jeff Weiner said. — Bloomberg News
Microsoft introduces Windows 10 update with creative focus Microsoft introduced an all-inone desktop personal computer and previewed an update to Windows 10 software that focuses on new creative features for designers of virtual and augmented reality programmes. The new PC, called Surface Studio, has a 28inch display with what Microsoft says is the thinnest LCD screen ever and an Intel Core I7 processor. It will cost $2,999. “We want it to transform the way you create and think about creating,” said Panos Panay, Microsoft’s vice president for devices. “It’s kind of built to pull you in.” The Windows update, scheduled to roll out in the spring, will be free to current Windows 10 users and will include tools to invent and share 3-D objects, said Microsoft Windows chief Terry Myerson at an event in New York. With the PC market in the doldrums and consumers increasingly expecting their operating systems for free, Microsoft is trying to juice Windows sales by offering tools to help users be more creative, playing in particular to its early start in augmented reality, where 3-D objects can be overlaid on what can be seen in real life. With the creative focus in the new Windows version, Microsoft is aiming for a group that has historically been fertile ground for Apple Inc. “We are the company that stands for the builders, the makers, the creators,” said Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella. The larger, sleeker look of the Surface Studio, whose monitor has a hinge that can move, is intended to showcase new creative features and provide highquality design experiences, with 13.5 million pixels of resolution and the widest variety of colours, according to Microsoft. — Bloomberg News

Test as the hosts tied up the series at 1-1. Bangladesh had come close to breaking England’s winning record in the first Test at Chittagong but suffered a heartbreaking defeat by 22 runs. England had looked in control as captain Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett took them to 100 without loss at tea, but the hosts produced a remarkable turnaround, taking all 10 of England’s second-innings wickets in the final session. Mehedi, who took six first-innings wickets and seven in total on debut in Chittagong, once again proved to be England’s nemesis
and picked up six for 77 on Sunday for a match haul of 12. Duckett was dropped at slip on 12 and fell to the first delivery after tea for 56 with Mehedi breaching his defence after the batsman had completed his maiden test half-century. Cook reviewed successfully on 44 to overturn an lbw decision off Mehedi but fell on 59 to a sharp catch at short point off the spinner, who turned 19 last week. England still looked well-placed with Ben Stokes, who also had a successful review after being given out caught behind on 20 off Mehe-
MENA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Tidy Owen goes one clear at Muscat Hills
IN FRONT: Daniel Owen
MUSCAT: Daniel Owen opened with a tidy five-under 67 to seize the early initiative in the MENA Tour Championship as Order of Merit leader Craig Hinton finished the day two shots off the pace on Sunday. England’s Owen mixed six birdies with a lone bogey to move one clear of his fellow countryman Max Williams and Scotland’s Paul Doherty on a day when 26 players broke par. A two-time winner on the tour this season, Hinton led the chasing pack on three under along with his playing partner Zane Scotland, Joe Heraty, Jordan Garnish, all of England, Mariano Ochoa of Spain and Per Barth of Sweden. Owen sounded very pleased with his day’s efforts, saying he struck the ball well and gave himself some decent scoring opportunities there. “I didn’t miss any green and played some solid golf,” said the Englishman who fell just one shy of equalling the course record. England’s Hinton made the
turn at one over and then picked up four shots in a row from the 13th, but a bogey-bogey finish undermined what would have been an excellent round. England’s Williams, who made six birdies against two bogeys, said he holed lots of good putts to keep the round going. “Very happy with my opening round. I made some good par saves, especially the one on the 15th which kept me track,” said Williams, who won the MENA Golf Tour Order of Merit title for amateurs in 2012. India’s Rayhan Thomas, who won the best amateur award at the Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Golf Challenge on Saturday, returned a 71 to lie just one off the pace set by England’s Benjamin David in his division. Morocco’s Faycal Serghini led the MENA Division for professionals, carding a solid two-under 70 while Saudi Arabia’s Othman Almulla opened with a level-par 72 to spearhead the challenge in the region’s amateur division. Among the notables, England’s Andrew Marshall and Scott Campbell carded matching 70s while Germany’s Aaron Leitmannstetter, who won the Ghala Open last week, slipped into a tie for 55th after opening with a 76. Featuring 52 professional and nine amateurs, the MENA Tour Championship will have no cut after the second round.

wickets over the two Tests. Missed chances Resuming the third day on 152 for three, the hosts were dismissed for 296 in the second session. England leg-spinner Adil Rashid took
four for 52. On a surface offering ample turn for the spinners, England made the chase more difficult with a string of missed chances. Imrul Kayes, unbeaten overnight, and Shakib Al Hasan added 48 for the fourth wicket during a chance-filled partnership. Kayes was dropped twice before off-spinner Moeen Ali finally trapped him leg before for 78. Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow missed a stumping chance with Shakib on 16 before Duckett grassed a simple catch in the deep with the batsman on 23. England also missed two review opportunities with replays showing the umpire’s decisions would have been overturned and Shakib continued to frustrate the tourists with a stroke-filled innings of 41. Sabbir Rahman and Shuvagata Hom continued to attack the bowlers in a brisk stand of 30. A few heated words were exchanged between players from both sides during the partnership, prompting the umpires to intervene. Rashid picked up the last two wickets in Bangladesh’s innings after lunch, while Stokes finished with three for 52. - Reuters

ECSTATIC: Indian players rejoice after beating Pakistan.
surmount the challenge from Pakistan
KUANTAN: Favourites India prevailed 3-2 over arch-rivals Pakistan to reclaim the Asian Champions Trophy hockey, presenting a perfect Diwali gift to the nation here on Sunday. Goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute), Yousuf Affan (23rd) and Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) helped India surmount the challenge from Pakistan, who rallied from two goals behind through strikes by Muhammad Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shaan (38th) in the title clash of the fourth edition of tournament. This was the first time the teams were meeting in the final of a continental tournament since India dethroned Pakistan as the Asian Games champions in Incheon, South Korea in 2014. India had won the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy by defeating Pakistan in the final in 2011. Pakistan re-
versed the result in the title contest the next year and went on to retain it in 2013 by defeating Japan in the final. World No. 6 India were the favourites going into the tournament, but were without several seasoned players who had been rested to recuperate from injuries. India went into the title contest at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium without ace custodian PR Sreejesh, who was rested due to pulled hamstring and Akash Chikte took the position under the bar. India earned their first penalty corner in the seventh minute, but failed to make it count. Ace flicker Rupinder was on the spot, but Jasjit Singh Kular was allowed to take the shot in a tactical move. Jasjit’s shot went wide of the left and posed no threat. Pakistan had a chance to take the lead in the 12th minute when Muhammad Rizwan Jr picked up a long ball inside the Indian circle and had only the goalkeeper to beat from close range. Goalkeeper Chikte stepped up to tackle him from close and Rizwan Jr shot wide to muff the opportunity. India broke the deadlock to
score the first goal in the 18th minute on their second penalty corner as Rupinder sent a rasping drag-flick into the left side of the net. This was the 11 penalty corner conversion in the tournament by Rupinder, the highest goal-scorer in the tournament by a big margin. Seasoned Indian midfielder Sardar Singh was again in the picture as India increased the lead in the 23rd minute as he worked up on the right flank and put Ramandeep Singh in possession on top of the circle. Ramandeep’s cross was deflected in by Yousuf Affan into the boards to put India 2-0 up. India had a goal disallowed on review in the 40th minute when the video umpire ruled that Kothajit Singh’s shot from outside the circle went into the goal without a touch. India wrested the lead back in the 51st minute when Sardar again shaped the goal-bearing move by working his way up on the left flank and gave a through pass to Thimmaiah, who beat Pakistan custodian Fareed Ahmed with a diagonal flick that ended inside the right goal-post. - PTI
