This “Design, Enterprise and Innovation” unit really allowed me to get an insight look into the working world and see how, as a group as well as an individual, we can work professionally to put an event together. Our task was to put together the Graduate Fashion Show Stand as well as the AUB Pavilion Show with our clients being Arts University Bournemouth. With all of us putting in equal work our aim was to produce the space for the Graduate show stand along with creating the tickets and leaflets to create awareness and a buzz around the event. NIL magazine (Not in London) will also be produced by us featuring all of the 3rd years’ work, designers, and communicators, it will be our job to produce the layout, illustrations and writing pieces for the magazine. As part of this unit, I was asked to work on a third years’ social media accounts and help her balance her workload. I thought that this was a really interesting task to undertake and was excited to get involved. In this report, I have documented the progress of this unit and what I have worked on as well as how I feel it has affected my work and benefited my needs.

Graduate Fashion Week is extremely important. It allows for student designers all over the country to showcase their work to the best of Fashion industry’s professionals. Christopher Bailey now esteemed Chief Executive of Burberry won the first ever Graduate Fashion prize back in 1991. He now says, “the importance of Graduate fashion week has never been more significant.” Set up by Jeff Banks Graduate Fashion Week was begun to give the opportunity for individual students outside of the Capital to allow their work to be seen by an elite group of professionals who, without this show, not be seen. Each year the event attracts 30,000 guests and feature 22 catwalk shows and exhibitions from over 40 Universities as well as a Gala Award Show. The sheer masses that attend each year, as well as industry professionals, stresses the importance of the job at hand and how vital it is to get it right, allowing our University to be displayed to the best of its ability.

Our brief was to co-design and produce three fashion events representing Arts University Bournemouth. The first event was the Bournemouth Fashion Show, then Graduate Fashion Week in London and finally the Higher Education show back at University. Our brief was to challenge ourselves to work in a team as well as under our own initiative managing the many different aspects of each event with the pressure of our work being showcased in front of Fashion’s professionals at GFW.

We started the co-design of this unit as a group we began with creating a Pinterest board filled with images inspired by the chosen theme of Industrial Warehouses. From this inspiration, I put together my own board of ticket designs that had inspired me and connected well with our theme. TICKETING To create the ticketing for the event I used my previously known skills on Photos and Indesign to create he tickets for the AUB show, taking inspiration from my Pinterest board. Using the colours that linked with our theme I went with black and white with a small use of yellow linking with what was going to be used in the NIL publication. I started the ticket design with a lettering design on the side creating AUB, having the meeting with the 3rd years they decided they liked the ticket design but not this aspect of it, I, therefore, adapted my design to fit the needs of the third years.

FILM The film we were to create would be shown at our stand at Graduate Fashion Show. To create the film, it took a lot of organisation as a group. Working in a small group the concept came about of turning the film into a zoetrope, having the models walk across the colourama and running shots as well. The photographer then took fast single shots until we got the frame that we wanted. The day was all organised really well. We began the day by choosing which outfits suited which models and then taking each model to hair and makeup. After getting them changed and being shot.

SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT The third year I was working for was called Kerrie who’s brand was called BE.ONE who’s ethos was all about healthy living and healthy lifestyle. She was looking to update her two social media account both Instagram and Facebook as she was soon to launch a website linking with the brand, and as this was her final major project she wanted to continue it after graduation. For her Instagram account, I created these countdown days, for a week prior to the launch of her website with every other day, I also created content with captions for the days in-between.

ARTICLE FOR NIL I was so excited to write this article about Sophie. Her work for her final collection is really amazing and her inspiration for it was incredible, looking at men’s mental health issue. So when approaching the article, I really wanted to get it right. I did some research into articles and interviews that I really liked, looking at the style in which they are written and what elements I would like to take to fit into my article. It was also really nice hearing what Karen and some of the other tutors thought of her work and of Sophie herself, hearing that she is a really bubbly nice person made me more inclined to write the article.

TICKETING There are many different aspects that contribute to this unit, one of the main aspects of the Graduate Fashion show was the stand, this was something that I was not prepared to involve myself in as Visual Merchandising has never been something that I am strong at or something that I enjoy. However, I really enjoy the digital side of putting together this show so I began to create ticket designs for the Arts University Bournemouth show. This was something that I actually really enjoyed. Having the opinion of the third years was actually very helpful, although they didn’t like a large aspect of my design the feedback was all very helpful. Getting the opinion of others is something that I deal well with and feel that this is something that is critical in this industry to develop an idea off someone else’s opinion. Also using the software’s again for this new unit has allowed me to become more familiar with the programs as well as boosting my confidence in the work that I do produce as well as adding to m portfolio which I wouldn’t otherwise do in my free time. FILM Creating the film for the graduate fashion show stand was a really big task that we had to undertake. It would be playing on repeat and featuring some of the third years collections for everyone to see so we really wanted to get it right, as well as having the pressure of a deadline upon us. Working on the film really allowed me to work on my skills of working as a group, pulling in models and working together to make sure

that everything would run smoothly as well as working in a group to achieve a similar goal of imagery that we all have in mind. Overall I really enjoyed working on the film, the hair and makeup and photographer on the shoot were all so lovely and we all worked really well together. SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT I was really worried when creating imagery for Kerrie’s Instagram as I really wanted her to like it as it was her final major project I didn’t want to negatively affect her work in anyway. But the first rough drafts of the countdown days I made I liked them so I was really reassured when Kerrie liked them too. Working with Kerrie was actually really inspiring and the work that she is creating for her Be One magazine based on healthy living and a healthy outlook on life has allowed me to see how to approach my final major project next year and to see the level of quality of work that is expected of you and has prepared me. ARTICLE FOR NIL When preparing to write the article for NIL I was a little cautious and worried, the magazine wasn’t my personal magazine which added the pressure of wanting people to like it. The research that I did for it really helped me become calmer in tackling this interview. Another struggle that I found with writing this article was the short time frame I had to write the article, as well as working with Sophie’s busy schedule and her impending hand in meant that getting the answers for the questions challenging. In hindsight if I were to do this again in the future I would grasp the opportunity to talk to her in person as it is more reliable than over email. But I was very happy with the final article written, I was also very happy that Karen and Ian liked the written piece, as well as Sophie being happy with it!

On the 19th May the AUB fashion show for the third year graduates was held at the Pavilion in town. Overall, I really enjoyed the day, it was really amazing seeing all the work that went into the AUB show as well as being inspired by the communicators work. As Second years we helped people to their seats, checked tickets, poured drinks and help clear up and wash up in between shows and after. Overall I really enjoyed the day, but wish that our whole team had pulled together as throughout the day 2nd Year Communications students slowly left leaving us with more jobs that took more time. Seeing everything together really makes me excited for third year and my final major project.

Working for AUB is something that I have really enjoyed. It has allowed me to work as part of a group alongside course mates I don’t usually work with and has allowed me to see how they work as well as teaching me the things they know on software that I didn’t before. Working in a group that I didn’t choose full of personalities that are all very different has allowed me to get an idea of what it would be like in industry. Although I enjoyed the overall task I feel there was a lack of organization, I felt that although we all worked well as a team as there was a lot of us there may have been too many cooks, people stepping on peoples toes and maybe too many people doing the same job, this meant that sometimes it was challenging to find jobs that weren’t already filled. So if I were to do this task again when the opportunity for a new task came along I would volunteer myself more swiftly, this is something to apply when entering industry as well, taking every opportunity as it comes rather than waiting for someone else to do it first.

The questions and answers from my interview with Sophie Whatling written for the Not in London magazine (NIL). What sparked your interest in fashion? - My interest in music first got me into in fashion, for example I liked punk music as a teenager and became fascinated with what the bands wore- this got me into Vivienne Westwood and it all diaries from there. What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? - I am always fascinated by art and feel it influences my work a lot. Also my collection explores mental health and how this relates to masculinity. I try to raise important issues in my work. Any crazy last minute finishes back stage or faux pas you would rather not relive? - Haha no faux pas! I was just happily sipping a prosecco backstage. What does it feel seeing your final collection on the catwalk? - To see my collection at London fashion week felt amazing! It made all the hard work worth it, also the model casting and music choice really made it! How has your experience at AUB driven you as a designer? - My experience at AUB has encouraged me to continue creating and trying out new things! For example, before this year I had never tried knitting before and now I love it! What advice would you give to someone going through the same process? - Advice wise I would say really fall in love with your concept as it’s something you will be working on for the entirety of third year! Also work hard and stay happy! Balance work and time
34
with friends and family otherwise you’ll go mad. Was it worth all the stress?! - Yes it was definitely worth it! Especially as I have now had an overseas placement opportunity at Missoni. As stressful as the degree is the reward of seeing your work down the runway over rides it all! Why do you feel it is important to raise important issues through fashion? - I think it’s imports to raise issues through fashion as it’s such a visual art form and what people wear and tell the world a lot about them. The fashion industry has become quite corrupt recently (unrealistic body standards, environmental damage, lack of workers’ rights etc..) so I think it’s up to students to highlight these issues and begin to make a change. Where did your colour inspiration come from a lot of Willem de Kooning and Jean Dubuffet work contains bolder colours? - My colour pallet came from the “Late paintings” of Willem de Kooning which use a lot of oranges blues, white and blacks. And what kept you going through all the late nights and stressful days? - Lots of cups of tea and my friends/ housemates who are also on fashion so we’d all stay up late all working together! What design features tackled the issues of mental health? - So my designs represent mental health through various ways. The abstract shapes on the knitwear pieces represent Herman Rorschach and the inkblot test- a theory used by psychologists to test a persons personality. The freyed denim and embroidery/ heavy stitching and patchwork represent repair and healing. The use of multiple faces and line drawings of men show how mental health can effect a wide variety of men. What materials did you use for the coat? - The coat is made from several different types of denim with knit ribs and cuffs. Was there significance in the dying of the shoes? - The shoes were over dyed and painted to give them a more worn in, messy look to fit with the rest of my collection.
