CEO’s Message Dear patrons, How time slips past us unnoticed! It seems not so long ago when we ushered in 2014 yet here we are again, soon to welcome another. With the season of celebration and reflection upon us, we hope you find inspiration and the occasion for gathering with loved ones through the arts This quarter, we welcome the return of two internationally renowned companies. Led by conductor Valery Gergiev, the London Symphony Orchestra performs Russian masterpieces, while the Stuttgart Ballet presents one of their signature pieces, Onegin. At da:ns festival and Kalaa Utsavam – Indian Festival of Arts, we bring to the fore the spirit of innovation with an array of artists who investigate traditions and engage with contemporary themes. Returning for its second edition, Voices – A Festival of Song spreads the joy of singing together with performances by vocal groups from Singapore and around the world, with opportunities for you to participate in workshops and sing-along sessions. As 2014 winds down to its final moments at Marina Bay Singapore Countdown, we bid farewell to the recent past and kick off our 50th year of national independence with a yearlong celebration through the arts. During this golden jubilee in 2015, Esplanade invites you to join us as we reflect on our past, share what being Singaporean means to us while we envision a future that embraces everything we hold dear. We look forward to presenting a thoughtful curation of programmes that not only bring you a sense of pride for our country but also fuel your imagination with endless possibilities of what we can achieve. With the many festivities ahead, we welcome you to Esplanade where the arts invigorate weary souls, inspire curious minds and arouse a sense of fun and adventure along the way.

Esplanade Presents

Pole dance champions Daniel Kok and Eisa Jocson storm the stage with intense physicality and presence. Together with the kinetic force of computercontrolled LED lighting from Takayuki Fujimoto (Dumb Type/ Kinsei R&D) and the vibrant soundscape by Marc Appart, director Arco Renz (Kobalt Works) turns the principles of ‘verticality’ and ‘circularity’ of pole dancing into a highly-embodied expression set in a synaesthetic environment. ALPHA deploys the visceral and sensorial minefield of pole dancing, provoking questions on the politics of gender and desire, and the complicity of seduction and manipulation.

Wayne McGregor and his company make their long-awaited debut in Singapore with FAR. A prolific dance maker and the first contemporary dancer to hold the position of Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet (UK), McGregor’s anatomy-defying choreography, which brings together dance, science and technology, has fuelled a string of truly unique works. FAR is no exception. Inspired by the Age of Enlightenment, FAR mines an era where mind-body relationships were examined in a new light, a time where reason and science prevailed. McGregor translates this rich period into a dance of pure physicality, with heart-stopping tension, sensuality, beauty and ineffable delicacy. Light and shadow (by rAndom International and Lucy Carter) are equal performers in shaping FAR’s mesmerising environment. Against a pulsating circuit board of 3,200 LED lights, 10 incredible dancers confront the 18th century’s searing contemporary sensibility against a haunting score by the critically acclaimed composer Ben Frost.

Gunther Herbig, conductor Ray Chen, violin MENDELSSOHN SHOSTAKOVICH

Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 Symphony No. 8 in C minor, Op. 65

Twenty five year old aiwanese-Australian violinist Ray Chen, winner of the Queen Elisabeth (2009) and Yehudi Menuhin Competitions (2008), joins Gunther Herbig and the SSO for Mendelssohn’s last large orchestral work, the Violin Concerto in E minor. One of the first of the great Romantic violin concertos, it has been enduringly popular since its 1845 premiere. German maestro Gunther Herbig will also conduct Shostakovich’s lesser heard Eighth Symphony of 1943. Together with the Seventh, Shostakovich considered both symphonies his Requiems for those who had suffered during the war.

Art songs, folk songs, new songs, old songs – for them, from them, for us, from us, for you. Before embarking on a road trip to Spain, the SYC Ensemble Singers presents a programme of songs for the 46th Tolosa International Choral Contest. The concert also features a selection of the choir’s songs for friendship concerts in the Basque region – commissions and dedications, both old and new, that have shaped the SYC Ensemble Singers’ sound and psyche.

MARINA BAY SINGAPORE COUNTDOWN 2015 31 Dec, Wed Esplanade Waterfront and Marina Bay Free

In 2015, Singapore marks its 50th year of Independence and we at Esplanade want to commemorate the occasion in a meaningful way to kick off the year’s celebrations. As part of the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown festivities, we would like to invite Singaporeans to reflect on all that we hold dear and to express our hopes and wishes for our nation and fellow citizens on the wishing spheres. It is our hope that by taking a moment to reflect on what is precious to us, we will better appreciate our lives and celebrate what we have as a nation and as a community. On the eve of this momentous year, we invite everyone to Marina Bay, to gather around the wishing spheres that will carry our collective hopes and dreams. Illuminated by fireworks, and against a backdrop of pulsating music and drums, together, as members of this nation we call home, we can look forward to a new year and a significant milestone for Singapore.
