CEO’s Message Dear patrons, The recent passing of our founding Prime Minister left us with heavy hearts and much to reflect on. As National Day draws near, we look forward to marking a new milestone as a nation, filled with our deepest gratitude for his lifelong contributions to the country. This quarter, Esplanade brings our Singapore story to the fore, in a meaningful way through the arts and with a multitude of expressions that capture the meaning of home and belonging. We invite you to join us, to be one in heart and spirit, as we share in the values and memories that we hold dear. This July, a month of free jazz performances, featuring veteran and young homegrown musicians, looks at the past, present and future of Singapore jazz. We also join the Singapore Chinese Orchestra as they explore cross-genre collaborations with homegrown musicians and personalities such as MICappella, Lim Kay Tong and Robert Fernando. Delve into the creative journeys of some of our much-loved singer-songwriters Dick Lee and Jimmy Ye as they share their stories with us. This season of Pesta Raya – Malay Festival of Arts and Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Festival invites you to treasure our heritage and cherish the traditional arts, respectively. At Pesta Raya, discover the story of Singapore’s first President, Yusof Ishak, in a theatrical production helmed by Zizi Azah. Pay tribute to the living fashion and music icon of the 1950s, Nona Asiah, in a concert and exhibition dedicated to her. Bringing focus to family and tradition, immerse in a weekend of Chinese traditional arts at Moonfest and enjoy the art of storytelling over a range of theatrical productions for the young and old. We hope the programmes this quarter will help you take stock of the recent past and reflect on what the future holds for us. Most importantly, may the arts remind us to cherish what we have, that no matter where we might be, Singapore will always be a place we call home.

The inaugural Singapore International Choral Festival in 2014 was a truly humbling experience, given the number of participants that took part. With 47 choirs and over 2,200 participants from China, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, it was truly a smorgasbord of cultures and music.

What makes someone Singaporean? Is it constantly striving to be the best at everything? Is it enduring the daily squeeze on the train? Is it the collective pride people feel during National Day, or could it be something more that goes beyond situations that are typically Singaporean?

Join us again this year at the closing ceremony concert of the 2nd Singapore International Choral Festival, and catch the top performing choirs from the choral competition. Enjoy a night of song and watch them compete for the judges' vote in the Grand Prix round and find out who walks away with the award

Join the protagonists in this forum theatre performance as they navigate their way through the multi-layered issue of identity.

One of the most unique characteristics of time-specific ragas is that they reflect the cycle of emotions experienced by us throughout the day. Part of the ongoing Chakra series, Prath Sangeet – Music of the Morning features a series of hindustani ragas written for dawn. Fresh and uplifting with a slight shade of darkness, Natbhairav depicts the end of the night as the first rays of sunlight fill the sky. It is the best raga for the early morning. A prominent raga following the bhairav melodic structure, Ahirbhairav is soothing and serene, peppered by folk elements that whisk listeners away to the countryside. Serious and contemplative, Bairagi expresses the fiery colour of the sky at the crack of dawn. When played, the pancham note in the composition brings calmness to the ears. Featuring Sunil Avachat on flute, Sarang Kulkarni on sarod, and Nawaz Mirajkar on tabla.

Recital Studio $38 Student, NSF and Senior: $30

Rick Smith, composer, guitarist and creative director Yong Kailin, violin and composer Yap Shu Mei, violin Lim Chun, viola Robert Choi, cello Felix Phang, double bass Richard Jackson, vocals and percussion Pablo Cazaldo, percussion Kamini Ramachandran, narrator “Jazz On Strings” was conceived as a departure from the traditional role of strings as a mere compliment to a typical Jazz trio but instead, this ensemble mirrors a classical chamber group, featuring the colours and textures of each instrument as individual voices. The melodic and harmonic language are based in jazz but the form and development takes much from classical music. In this sense, it’s in the tradition of Gil Evans and Third Stream movement of the 1950’s; and the contemporary work of the Kronos Quartet. PROMISE – Jazz on Strings is a celebration of life, a heart-warming journey that captures on life’s bittersweet moments and experiences. In a union of the classical string quartet and jazz guitar trio, the concert draws on the harmony and improvisational quality of classical textures and virtuosity, which allow each player to express their individuality in the context of the group.

A man of ideals who dared to dream of a peaceful and successful nation after 200 years of colonial rule, he spoke of how democracy could transform Singapore into a country of great unity and solidarity. This new play traces his humble beginnings as a journalist to his becoming of Singapore’s first head of state, while offering a rare glimpse into the life and times of this extraordinary leader who dedicated his life in service of his nation. The Rain, The Story December Rains, a story weaved by tenderness and hope. Amidst the tumultuous '50s was a pair of young lovers whose innocent relationship was convoluted by social unrest, a marriage out of convenience, and great parental expectations. The downpour of pain drenched the lonesome messenger who lingered in between the lovers, holding on to his unrequited love as he, too, was caught in the whirlpool. As the rain season continued decades later, past grievances and mistakes surfaced, forcing decisions to be made. One cannot help but wonder if it is a sweet drizzle or a dire storm waiting.

The

Mad

Speaks: With

Chinaman an

Dick

Interview Lee

Following 2011’s sold-out The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman at Esplanade, Singapore’s celebrated singer-songwriter Dick Lee returns with more stories and songs to share. We catch up with the Mad Chinaman himself as he talks about the Singapore music scene and what you can look forward to in his upcoming upsized sequel.

Tell us about the ‘madness’ behind your Mad Chinaman persona. How did he come to be and where is he heading? From my time as a child growing up in a home filled with music, to when I was confronted by my lack of identity in my explorations writing music, it was through this journey and search for self that I discovered the Mad Chinaman in me. How has Singapore’s music scene grown since you made your debut, and in what way has it inspired or affected the way you write and produce music? What else are you inspired by? In some ways, the local music scene has plateaued if not declined since the early 1970s. After the amazing run it had in the 1960s, the clampdown on long hair on men in association with drugs and rock ’n’ roll led to pop music being seen as undesirable. While the few brave souls like myself, who struggled to continue doing what we loved, have kept the scene going, local support is just not enough to make this a profitable industry. These days, my music career is largely supported by the musicals I write, as well as commissions. As always, I am inspired by the emotions I experience in life, and continue to try to capture all their nuances in my songs. You’ve written a great number of songs over the last four decades. If you had to pick an all-time favourite, which is it and what is the story behind it? I guess it would have to be Home because it is a summary of my life, my home and what it stands for.

57 / JUL – SEP 2015 / www.esplanade.com

Three things I have to do before I go on stage...

a quick run-through of lyrics, deep breathing and a prayer of thanksgiving.

Of the many characters and personas you have created for the stage and yourself, who do you identify with the most and why? None of them and all of them! They are all figments of my imagination and extensions of my persona, though the mad chinaman is probably the truest. Is there anything special you would like to say to the people coming for The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman Upsized? Besides taking the audience with me on my musical adventures, I’ll be a sharing a bit about my personal life, as well as paint a picture of the Singapore that I grew up in. The concert will be as colourful as my clothes and filled with music, laughter and fun. Catch Dick Lee in The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman Upsized! on 3 Sep, Thu, 7.30pm at the Esplanade Concert Hall.

Known for their majesty and contemplative nature, the compositions of Muthuswami Dikshitar are beloved for their ability to capture the essence of the ragas, or melodic modes. So important are his songs in carnatic music that he is renowned as one of the ‘musical trinity of carnatic music’, along with Tyagaraja and Syama Sastri. Dikshitar’s journey is remarkable. When he was still in his teens, he was sent on a pilgrimage with a wandering monk to expand his musical knowledge. It was a feat at that time, as he travelled over 400km across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, to some of the most important temples in Southern India, including Kanchi, Chidambaram, Tirupathi and Tiruvannamalai. There, he composed some of his celebrated pieces, many of which are still widely sung and performed in carnatic concerts. Upcoming vocalists Sai Vigneshwar, Sudarshan Narasimhan and Nishanth Thiagarajan trace the temple pilgrimages of Dikshitar, exploring compositions dedicated to the temples.

Adapted from the classic Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion, Peony My Beauty is a refreshing adaptation of the touching love story between Du Li Niang and Liu Meng Mei. The elegant movements and stylised singing on stage emphasises the earthshaking, epic struggles faced by the protagonists Du and Liu. The production boasts a star-studded cast, featuring Plum Blossom Award winners Li Shu Qin as Du Li Niang and Liang Yao An as Liu Meng Mei, as well as veteran Cantonese Opera performer Peng Zhi Quan as the Supreme Judge. The stage design of this production is exquisitely designed and meticulously crafted, transforming the stage into an immersive setting that includes a garden with a beautifully detailed pavilion, complete with flowing streams. Together with a gripping storyline, elegant acting and melodious songs, it is little wonder that Peony My Beauty has been well-received at its performances in different cities in China and Hong Kong. About the troupe The troupe is currently headed by award-winning Cantonese Opera artist Li Shu Qin. She is a National First Grade Performer, and among the many awards she has received is the prestigious Plum Blossom Award. The troupe was formed in 1957, and since then, it has nurtured numerous Cantonese Opera luminaries. Their repertoire has received recognition and acclaim, with many of their productions receiving numerous awards. The troupe has also toured extensively to countries such as America, Canada, France, Germany, Korea and Hong Kong. The troupe is now recognised as a Cultural Beacon in the city of Foshan, China. Their variety, earthy simplicity and colourful imagery relate the stories of the people from rural China. Be transported to faraway lands through the hearty songs from sweeping prairies, the exuberant songs of traditional festivities, and the passionate songs of love, as three of the best folk singers from China—Sa Ren Hu of the Mongol people, Su Du A Luo of the Yi people, and Yang Qian Lin of the Hani people—mesmerise you with their exquisite singing. The programme includes the lyrical yet stately Mongolian folk song Song of Praise, the joyful Yi folk song Return from the Marketplace, and the sentimental The Flowers of Romance. / VISUAL ARTS – AN INVITATION TO BE HERE Celebrating Singapore’s 50th birthday, Esplanade Visual Arts invites one and all to be here—to be present and to be in the moment. As we gather local artists from different disciplines to share and reflect with us, we invite you to also contribute to the multitude of interpretations—to stand before each art work and engage your mind and spirit… to put it simply, to be here.

SG-X

Wong Wei Loong 17 Jul 2015–3 Jan 2016 Upper Concourse 30 Jul–6 Sep Community Wall SG-X is a futuristic look at Singapore’s ongoing progression into a hyper-efficient and interconnected city-state in which the distinct characteristics of its various neighbourhoods are maintained. It is also a celebration of the nation’s cultural achievements and comprises many familiar cultural landmarks amidst fantastical imaginary architecture, and features a plethora of activity and diversity fuelled by a highly systemised network of highways and skyscrapers.

Like one who sows and nurtures seeds with love and care, Han has pursued her art-making with perseverance and dedication.

Han Sai Por 1 Aug 2015–3 Jan 2016 Upper Concourse

Han’s signature stone sculptures always exude an intense, quiet determination beneath the solidity of the material; a sense of undying love for and obligation to the natural environment is apparent and the hard rocks are softened by their forms through her delicate hands. Her work has always centred on man’s rapid destruction of the natural, native environments in harsh, urban landscapes.

HARVEST

Approached to work with Esplanade once again for the occasion of Singapore’s jubilee year, Han has adopted a lighter and more celebratory note, gathering a fruitful Harvest to mark Singapore’s golden 50th anniversary and the new beginning of the next 50 years to come. 77 / JUL – JAN 2016 / www.esplanade.com

I See You See Me by Mrydette reminds fellow Singaporeans to recognise the uniqueness in one another, to go beyond superficialities and to understand one another a little more through their art. This is an initiative to give value to human interactions and the manner in which we appreciate and honour one another. The final assemblage is a consolidation of both the artist and community’s efforts, representative of a community’s shared vision. After all, “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people,” said Mahatma Gandhi.

PING-PONG GO ROUND Lee Wen 9–31 Aug Forecourt

As a sport, ping pong is said to be as much a woman’s game as it is a man’s. In this work, the structure and rules of ping pong are reinvented in the context of possibilities as the artist seeks alternative models of interaction. By reinventing the shape of a traditional ping pong table to present a version without borders, Lee offers a different perception of its limitations and creates multiple possibilities for broader dialogue. Ping-Pong Go Round is a multi-player game and a dialogue between numerous people, regardless of gender and age around a donut-shaped table. As Ping-Pong Go Round continues to be featured in exhibitions around the world, the work has invited and encouraged dialogue and challenge through sport and games.
