CEO’s Message Dear patrons, What a year it has been for Singapore. Just months ago, we marked a significant milestone as a nation with a heartwarming display of patriotism. As Singaporeans from all walks of life gathered on National Day to pay tribute to our pioneer generation and regale in our national songs, never had our Singapore spirit shone brighter. And even though the big day is over, the celebrations go on at Esplanade. We continue to invite one and all to join us in expressing our Singapore identity through the arts. da:ns festival commemorates its 10th anniversary this season with a meaningful celebration of the friendships forged with its artists, audience and partners through the years. Returning to our shores are the legendary Sylvie Guillem, on her final tour after almost four decades; kathak maverick Akram Khan and flamenco firebrand Israel Galván, in a new collaboration co-produced by the festival; and Nederlands Dans Theater 2, one of the most innovative dance companies for young dancers. A festival of play and imagination, Octoburst! 2015 brings its young audience a pleasant surprise this year. We introduce the rotund and loveable mascot, PIP, our newest addition to the Esplanade family whom we hope will brighten up anyone’s day. Revisiting the past through the songs and dances of the good old days, A Date With Friends presents its first ever theatre production for seniors, by seniors. Come December, join in the festive cheer as we bring you an exuberant month of free music and choral programmes as part of Voices and Celebrate December. And as the anticipation builds up towards the final moments of 2015, we look forward to celebrating a year well spent and a better one ahead. Head down to Marina Bay Singapore Countdown to watch the sky being painted with fireworks to specially commissioned music, and the bay lit up once again by thousands of spheres that represent our hopes and wishes for 2016. And there is still so much that we wish to share with you. Whether in finding ourselves through movement, connecting with others through music or believing in our shared aspirations as a nation, may this quarter’s programmes carry us into the new year full of hope, positive energy and a reinvigorated spirit.

MAHLER Symphony No. 10 (Performing version by Deryck Cooke)
Back by popular demand, GRAMMY® award-winning ensemble Chanticleer celebrates its 38th season this year, with an evening featuring Over the Moon, a world premiere by Nico Muhly, music by Gustav Mahler, Jaakko Mäntyjäarvi, Mason Bates, Stephen Paulus, Orlando di Lasso, Claudio Monteverdi, Josquin Desprez and others.
Chief Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra Thomas Dausgaard directs the SSO in Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. Composed during a time of emotional turmoil in Mahler’s personal life, the final movement is a passionate reaffirmation of Mahler’s love for his wife Alma. The Tenth remained unfinishe at the time of Mahler’s death in 1911, and it was only in 1964 that Deryck Cooke’s version – the most widely performed version today – was premiered.
“Dausgaard's forces weaved through with authority and luminous beauty” —The Times
Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” the twelve-man chorus is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its seamless blend of voices and for its original interpretations of vocal literature and contemporary composition. This 2015–16 season takes the group all over the world, under the direction of newly appointed Music Director William Fred Scott. Since Chanticleer began releasing recordings in 1981, the group has sold well over a million albums and won two GRAMMY® awards. Join “the world’s reigning male chorus” (The New Yorker ) at the Esplanade Concert Hall as they bring you yet another rapturous performance.

Four intimate dance portraits reveal the deeply personal working lives of choreographers that are negotiating the ever-changing terrain of contemporary dance-making in Asia. Rianto specialises a traditional dance of Lengger and explores the personal and societal tensions of gender in dance-making today. Surjit Nongmeikapam breaks out of conservative Manipuri cultures and questions exoticism when creating dance for the consumption of European audiences. Yuya Tsukahara subjects Choy to a brutal contact improvisation duet, while Xiao Ke and Zi Han reflect on the social and political context of their environment, and experiment with the symbolic tendencies of the Chinese dance-maker. Advisory for Part A: This production contains mature themes and brief rear nudity. Advisory for Part B: This production contains some violent scenes.

This electrifying and testosterone-filled physical theatre ”horror show” exquisitely captures and transcends the spirit of Anthony Burgess’s original literary masterpiece, 50 years on from its publication. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glassedged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. A playtime of orgiastic ultraviolence and sexuality, it is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. The allure of Golden Venus wasn’t just the venue and the music, it was also about the bands—singers and musicians who were instrumental in shaping the vibrant local musical landscape back then. Whether it was the blistering blues solos of The Straydogs, the instrumental jangle pop of The Checkmates, or the inimitable voices of Veronica Young and Vernon Cornelius, these Golden Venus acts left unforgettable impressions on audiences week after week. This November, we pay tribute to the trailblazers of the memorable tea dance era. Come and be a part of Singapore’s music history again with Veronica Young, The Checkmates with Vernon Cornelius and The Straydogs, and relive the swinging ‘60s!

Their beginnings and ends, when seen as a whole, are therefore a representation of infinit .

/ VISUAL ARTS – AN INVITATION TO BE HERE Celebrating Singapore’s 50th birthday, Esplanade Visual Arts invites one and all to be here—to be present and to be in the moment. As we gather local artists from different disciplines to share and reflect with us, we invite you to also contribute to the multitude of interpretations—to stand before each art work and engage your mind and spirit… to put it simply, to be here.
Esplanade Presents
I SEE YOU SEE ME Mrydette Ends 8 Nov Tunnel
I See You See Me by Mrydette reminds fellow Singaporeans to recognise the uniqueness in one another, to go beyond superficialities and to understand one another a little more through their art. This is an initiative to give value to human interactions and the manner in which we appreciate and honour one another. The final assemblage is a consolidation of both the artist and community’s efforts, representative of a community’s shared vision. After all, “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people,” said Mahatma Gandhi.

SG-X
Wong Wei Loong Ends 3 Jan 2016 Upper Concourse SG-X is a futuristic look at Singapore’s ongoing progression into a hyper-efficient and interconnected city-state in which the distinct characteristics of its various neighbourhoods are maintained. It is also a celebration of the nation’s cultural achievements and comprises many familiar cultural landmarks amidst fantastical imaginary architecture, and features a plethora of activity and diversity fuelled by a highly systemised network of highways and skyscrapers.

Like one who sows and nurtures seeds with love and care, Han has pursued her art-making with perseverance and dedication.
Han Sai Por Ends 3 Jan 2016 Concourse
Han’s signature stone sculptures always exude an intense, quiet determination beneath the solidity of the material; a sense of undying love for and obligation to the natural environment is apparent and the hard rocks are softened by their forms through her delicate hands. Her work has always centred on man’s rapid destruction of the natural, native environments in harsh, urban landscapes.
HARVEST
Approached to work with Esplanade once again for the occasion of Singapore’s jubilee year, Han has adopted a lighter and more celebratory note, gathering a fruitful Harvest to mark Singapore’s golden 50th anniversary and the new beginning of the next 50 years to come.

TWENTYFIFTEEN.SG – THE EXHIBITION
20 photographers, 15 images each – that was the key idea behind TwentyFifteen.sg, a project to showcase the work of Singaporean photographers, on the subject of Singapore, to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee in 2015. Curated by the photography collective PLATFORM, the initiative has published a folio for each of the 20 selected photographers since 2013. TwentyFifteen.sg: The Exhibition presents a selection of photographs from this project. Featuring both established and emerging photographers, the exhibition provides a multifaceted view of the complex society that Singapore is today: from intimate family portraits to iconic landscapes and landmarks, from artful explorations of Singapore identity to provocative views from the margin. BALANCE OF LIFE
Kumuda Krovvidi and Shivali Mathur 9 – 29 Nov Community Wall
Balance of Life is based on the Warli style of painting. Warli art is a visual painting style that owes its origins to tribal people living in the western regions of India. The word “warli” is derived from “waral”, which means a piece of land or field. The art form is typically used in decorating the mud walls of the huts in which the people live in. The paintings are mostly done with white rice paste and resemble pre-historic cave paintings depicting scenes of human figures engaged in activities like hunting, dancing, sowing and harvesting. The murals depict the Warli people’s simple appreciation of nature and celebration of life and its surroundings. In Conjunction With

IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT (WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING)
Darren Soh 14 Nov – 3 Jan 2016 Tunnel
While You Were Sleeping is a collection of large-scale nocturnal landscapes of Singapore. Ten years ago, the artist embarked on a journey of discovery, both of Singapore and of himself as a photographer. His first serious foray into photographing landscapes and spaces in Singapore would later become his first monograph, setting the stage for all the work that he has made since. Ten years on, Singapore is a very different place, and many of the spaces he photographed in While You Were Sleeping no longer exist the way they did in his photographs. However, While You Were Sleeping 2015 is not going to be an attempt to photographically update the spaces from the first project. Rather, it is a continuation of his search for the unfamiliar in the mundane, presenting another Singapore that is almost alien, yet very much real.
