My daughter came in from out of town for the holidays and, unlike her usual agenda, did not have to leave immediately after they were over, but stayed around for two additional, glorious days. As always when in New York she has countless errands to run and tries as well to make a point of seeing as many of her old friends who still live in the neighborhood as she can. These are not relaxing, “just hanging around” type of days. If anything the opposite. But it is still wonderful having her and her husband and baby around. Today being Sunday I ran around with them. Them being my daughter and granddaughter. You really forget how bringing a baby along with you changes the whole pace and protocol of the day. As you are aware I am a frenetic list-

maker and chore chopper. Few things make me happier - okay, maybe not happier but feeling content - than crossing those to-do things off my list. Drawing a thick neon high lighter resolutely through the task penned into my daily planner can really give me a lift. Well, that doesn’t happen too often when traveling with a tot. First of all, no matter what time you make a plan of starting your day, add a couple of hours. Minimum. It doesn’t matter what time you wake up and make it downstairs. It doesn’t matter if you’re showered and dressed and your watches are synchronized. It simply isn’t going to happen the way you think it will. And that’s just preparing to leave. Then there’s the leaving of the house itself. Just

Leaving the house is a complicated, time-consuming activity all unto itself. Next time I’m putting “leaving the house” down as a goal on my planner. If I’m lucky I’ll be able to at least cross that entry off at some point in the day. It makes no never mind if you are going out for one errand or twelve (ha, twelve). You still need the same truckload of “what-if” supplies

with you on your outing. Because you know, the one time you leave something out - even something odd, barely used, and even if you are planning on going just around the corner and only for a minute or two - it will guarantee to be the very time you really need it. From stroller to snack, from bottle to baby wipes, nothing is unessential. Loading up the car is no small or quick task and you can bet your cute little booties that when every last item is in its place, including baby strapped into her car seat and adults

buckled into their positions, you will hear a hair-raising wail. Somebody who has been smiling and patient throughout the proceedings is suddenly tired and thirsty and very possibly in need of a diaper change as well. Half the day is gone and we have yet to reach a single destination on our list but we have started our engines and are actually leaving our launch pad, turning the corner and heading off our block. Hurray! Ten minutes, a whole bottle and a pacifier plug-in later we pull into the parking lot of our first stop. My daughter and I

get out of the car. I pop the trunk so she can get the stroller. Well, guess who finally conked out and is taking a much-needed nap? We look at each other. So much for the mother/daughter shopping and bonding day. “You go and take your time,” I say. “I’ll stay with the baby,” (who is notorious for her six minute dozes). “Enjoy. I’ll bring her in when she wakes up.” Well, it is nearly an hour and a half later. Baby is ironically still sleeping in the car seat

Technology changes so rapidly. It is amazing in many ways. For example, in a very positive way technology has changed our ability to treat diseases, disabilities and Health Care in general. However, as a psychotherapist in private practice, I see much of the down side of technology. Case 1 - Dovid comes into my office to deal with some of his marital issues. He sits in a comfortable chair and talks to me, but instead of looking at me he is busy with his Blackberry throughout the session. At the end of the session, I ask him if he does the same thing when he talks to his wife. He smiles and says “Yeah it’s a habit - I just keep checking messages, e-mails and news… I love this Blackberry - I can get everything on it!” I think to myself that he is paying for the time and if he wants to talk to me and play with his Blackberry that is his choice, but as his therapist I feel the session is just unimportant to him. I am trying to help him with crucial issues in his life and he is busy with his toy. I am still human and even I can feel unimportant when we do therapy in this manner. I then tell him “You know you are paying good money for this time and I think you would get more out of it if you paid attention to our conversation and did not play with your Blackberry.” And I acknowledge to myself that it would also not make me feel so unessential. He then looks at me and says “You sound just like my wife. She says we would have better conversations if I looked at her during dinner and did not play with my Blackberry. She keeps telling me that my behavior makes her feel so unimportant.” This is our first session so I should be gentle, but I feel like saying ”You know that is exactly how you make others feel. Would you do this to a client in an important meeting?” Instead I tell him, that maybe after telling me about his issues he should go home and eat dinner, talk to his wife while looking in her eyes and put his Blackberry away.” He says to me “Dr. Respler, you have to be

From Soup to Nuts: A Gourmet Gift As the weather turns colder and the trees grow bare, a warm, wonderful soup is the perfect gift we can surprise our families with when they come home from school and work. Some innovative samples follow from Homemade Soups by Sunset (Lane Publishing).

Stir in stock, parsley, port, and cloves. Cover and simmer until

If using dried mushrooms, soak in warm water to cover for 30 minutes; drain. For fresh or dried mushrooms, cut off and discard stems; cut caps into 1/8-inch-wide slivers. In a 4 to 5-quart pan, melt margarine over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, until soft (about 10 minutes). Add stock and mushrooms. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Add potato; reduce heat, cover, and simmer until potato is fork-tender (about 10 minutes). Cut large spinach leaves into strips. Add spinach to stock mixture and cook, uncovered, until just wilted (1 to 2 minutes). Sprinkle individual servings with parsley, if desired. Makes about 6 servings. CREAM OF PISTACHIO SOUP 1 1/2 cups shelled (3 cups or 3/4 lb. in

shell) raw, roasted, or roasted salted pistachios 1/4 cup pareve margarine 1 small onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup chopped celery 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed 2 tablespoons dry sherry 6 cups chicken stock or regular strength canned chicken broth 1/4 cup long-grain white rice 2 parsley sprigs 1 small bay leaf 1 cup pareve whipping cream Whole chives Rub pistachios in a clean dish towel to remove as much of skins as possible; then set aside. In a 4 to 5-quart pan, melt margarine over medium heat. Add onion, celery, and garlic and cook, stirring often, until onion is very soft but not browned (about 15 minutes). Add sherry, stock, rice, parsley, bay leaf, and 3/4 cup of the pistachios. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat, cover, and simmer until rice is tender (about 25 minutes). Discard bay leaf. Whirl pistachio mixture, a portion at a time, in a food processor or blender until very smooth; pour through a wire strainer and discard residue. Return to pan. Stir in cream and heat until steaming. Garnish individual servings with chives and sprinkle with remaining 3/4 cup pistachios. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly; add vermouth. Season to taste with salt and red pepper. Makes 6 servings.

Now I know that the secret to slicing meat really thin is buying a good cut of meat, slicing it against the grain and when the meat is cooked and very cold, and having a regular old-fashioned sharp knife. The Blackberry is great, but gives people internet access and the internet is so accessible in all influences that it often destroys marriages, children and the quality of life for many families. Unfortunately, the problems I treat now with a whole host of new addictions are often related to the internet. The Rabbonim know what they are saying when they tell you to take it out of your home. One Rav said to me, “Dr. Respler, whenever you speak, speak against the internet. Encourage people to have blocks. Being alone with the internet in a private room is a form of Yichud.” Again and again we hear speeches against the internet. Although it has a wonderful ability to educate and help people with research, with its assets come so many detrimental effects that it is clear to me in my practice that we need to rethink its place in our homes and life. So my dear readers, please use technology well. Don’t abuse it in a manner that destroys your life and your family relationships. Hatzlocha!

Continued from page 134 My treadmill. Yet it serves as a great place to hang ironed shirts! A.Z. Definitely the mandolin slicer that I saw in the mall and had to have. I ended up slicing my finger and needed 8 stitches and multiple trips to the doctor. I should forget the healthy vegetables and just stick to making plattentortes, which is certainly not healthy, but much safer in the long run! L.E. My breadmaker. My mother bought it for me thinking I would bake different type of fresh bread every morning. The first time I tried the bread it came out like cement and I haven’t used it since. S.R. When my daughter was younger, she decided she “needed” Dance Revolution which only worked with a certain Playstation system. All the stores were sold out. I finally located one online and got the thing going. She played with it for about a week and that was it. The Playstaion is still attached to the TV collecting dust and the huge colorful mat is taking up valuable space in my basement toy closet. I can’t bear to throw it out because I spent so much time, energy, and money acquiring it in the first place. What a monumental waste! T.B. The jury is still out on this one and I know that many, if not most will disagree, but I have never used my top of the line Kitchen Aid, which sits on its own pop-up shelf in my

renovated kitchen. And it’s been almost four years since I purchased it. I.M. I’m gonna have to say my ice cream maker. It sounds so cool (which is why I bought it)... and then when I opened it and read the instructions it said you had to blend everything first in a blender. So I had to then buy a blender. It ended up being such a hassle I hardly ever used it! E.S. The worst gadget I ever bought was my electric knife! I used it ONCE!!!! The slices were thick!!!! It has been rusting in my cabinet! I think I will go and throw it out after I finish this response. L.M. My mandolin. Love it, but since it is put away, I forget I have it and never use it. S.W. Ah, so many. I don’t know where to begin. The toaster that only takes bread vertically so I can’t make pizza bagels or other quick dishes in it, for one. The bread machine that takes up a ton of room and has never been used. An expresso machine - I don’t even like coffee. Need I go on? M.T. Well, I must say it isn’t an exciting gadget but you’ve got to have one!! An IRON. The only problem for me is that my clothes look the same after I use it as they did before and, quite frankly, I use it as a paperweight!!! Maybe I would do better with a plattentorte maker!!! L.W.
