e received a Save-the-Date magnetic postcard in the mail yesterday. It was so colorful and graphic I thought it was an advertisement for a travel agency and nearly tossed it. Turns out it was for a friend's daughter's wedding seven months away. Quite advanced planning, I thought. Was it really necessary? When I looked at the date again I noted that it was for mid June – prime scheduling time on any year's calendar for graduations, bon voyage parties, Father's Day get-togethers, bar-b-ques and, of course, weddings. So much effort, energy and expense goes into making a wedding, why not ensure that those you want to be there know about it in advance and hold the date? Not so absurd if you really think about it. I dug out my trusty appointment book but realized that it only went up to January 7, 2018. I flipped the page to make a note to transfer to my new book which I would be buying in the next few days and saw I al-

ready had written something on the page. Oh wow. On that exact date a summer program I planned on attending in Israel was beginning. When had I entered that information? And what was I going to do? A unique educational opportunity. A trip to see the kids and grand kids. A friend's daughter's wedding. All good things. But all at the very same time. Yes, I know. That should be my biggest problem – choosing between one wonderful activity or another. Like I said. All good things, thank G-d. As we mature and age our schedules and obligations multiply. With life's advances our calendars fill up quickly and, unfortunately, not always with positive activities. Admittedly, some times when we receive an invitation to an event our first reaction is not always delight. The time is perhaps not very convenient. The location is far. We have a conflict. We are just getting back from a trip and expect we'll be wiped, etc. Maybe we are not even that close with

the hosts and wonder why we were included on the guest list. Whether or not we end up attending the event it's important to look at each invitation as a blessing – for those making the simcha being able to celebrate a special occasion and for ourselves to be counted as friends or acquaintances worthy of an invite. The more our social obligations include painful or difficult activities the more we should cherish each opportunity to share and experience joy. When invitations come to our home I enter the date, time and place in my appointment book and verbally tell my husband. Usually within five seconds after I've shared news of an entry on my cal-
endar my husband has already forgotten about it. He relies on me to remind him. A couple of weeks before, a few days ahead and, often the morning itself when he gets to be surprised all over again. In an unusual attempt to be organized hubby asked me this afternoon what we had coming up on our social schedule. I pulled out my book at rattled off eight events within the next couple of weeks. We looked at each other. Perhaps we were wondering how we were going to work out the overlaps and carpools. Maybe we were tabulating the many gifts we would need to give in the coming days. Or the distances

we'd need to travel and late hour we'd be returning the night before a regular workday. Well, I'm happy to report that whatever flew through our minds, neither one of us expressed it. We'll be busy, I said. Nice, he responded. I guess we've reached the age where we are grateful for dates on our calendars that mark occasions to celebrate. So, whether you are the one making a wedding or the one attending one, this issue is for you. Congratulations. Mazal tov. May we all continue to share wonderful landmarks in our lives.

Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: UN PLAZA GRILL
By: Rachel Rosenberg
I
t seems like lately every new kosher restaurant stuns with the most fabulous décor. Perhaps kosher restauranteurs have recognized that the kosher menu is not going to vary much, especially for upscale dining; there will always be an extensive sushi menu and of course, steaks. So how can new restaurants distinguish themselves? Ambiance, service and quality. In this regard, UN Plaza Grill at Trump World Tower on United Nations Plaza between 47th and 48th Street in NYC has truly hit the mark. The restaurant is located on two floors, with the main dining room on the ground level and an exclusive smaller dining room overlooking the main level upstairs. The lighting is dimmed, with huge Oriental style fixtures that rise from the floor to the ceiling, and a large mural of tigers overlooking the red leather banquettes. On the lower level diners can sit at a bar facing an open kitchen area, while on the upper level there is an extensive striking bar with a few small tables nearby. The interesting set up with many walls, fixtures and beams makes for a great place for diners looking for a private area to celebrate any occasion. The sushi at UN Plaza is beautifully prepared, tasty and fresh. A couple of unique rolls that I tried included sweet and spicy flavors such as the Duo Ahi Tuna which has jalapeno and pear together with two types of tuna rolled with avocado and crunch on top. Similarly, the New York roll has spicy tuna and red onion mixed with mango, truffle and ikura. The presentation on a stylized round bamboo plate is a great alternative to the typical long narrow sushi plate. Another great sushi appetizer is the Scottish Salmon sashimi which was presented on the same round plate and decorated with beautifully thin • YA M A Z A K I • O N E I D A • • REED AND BARTON• RICCI • WALLACE • GORHAM • 1 8 / 1 0 S TA I N L E S S & S I LV E R P L AT E D F L AT WA R E

slices of salmon sashimi topped with some rough slices of black truffle. It is accompanied by a small decanter of ponzu sauce which can be poured over the sashimi. My favorite of the meat appetizers was the veal sweetbreads. There were very few pieces of the soft sweetbread, but it was served with cubes of squash, both to be dipped in either a smear of pickled mustard or harissa sauce. The buffalo chicken tenders were bite sized crispy fried chicken that were spicier than most buffalo chicken, with a great kick especially when dipped in the honey mustard sauce. For my entrée I had the crispy Cornish hen which could have been a bit dry but was plated in a deep black bowl filled with a chicken soup-like sauce which kept the hen moist. It was served with large pieces of bok choy and trumpet mushrooms. My fellow diners wisely chose the “Filthy Wagyu Burger”. The combined short rib and beef burger was thick and juicy and the brioche bun tasted like it was baked on site. The steaks we tried were cooked perfectly medium rare and served with a variety of steak sauces. The side of purple eggplants was soft with a sweet sticky sauce and was accompanied by long green peppers. Very often upscale kosher restaurants will order their desserts from elsewhere or stick to very few basic desserts. UN Plaza has its own acclaimed French pastry chef and their desserts make it impossible to skip. I adored the Lemon and Meringue Clouds, a lemon tart surrounded by clouds of meringue with a streak of raspberry sauce and a scoop of coconut sorbet. We asked the server to send the house’s most popular dessert, which apparently is the peanut and chocolate dome. The rich chocolate and peanut butter flavor is truly luscious, but a bite or two is all I could eat before chocolate coma hit me. The restaurant also features a vast cocktail menu with many interesting twists on everyone’s favorite mixed drinks. UN Plaza is a great all around experience and highly recommended for private parties and business dinners.
