lthough my older daughter and her family have been living in Israel for almost five years now and although I, too, lived in Israel some forty plus years ago, I still can't get used to the six day school and work week. Doesn't everyone need that Sunday to take care of errands, host birthday parties and special events, enjoy family trips or just veg out and relax? Shabbat is a wonderful gift. But while it might be a day to rise and reflect spiritually it is certainly not a day to get all those time-consuming and tedious things crossed off our to-do list. That's, of course, what Sunday is for. When the children were younger we tried to schedule family time - our immediate and extended - on Sundays. It was also a day for replenishing the pantry and fridge, working on school projects, replacing worn clothing or household items. It was a day to get things done. As the children got older it was more a day full of carpools. They needed our driver's license and wheels but not necessarily our company. Still, we were busy - chauffeuring from one location to another, though often we ourselves never got out of the car. Now with our children out of the house Sunday has taken on a different feel. It is not as stressful, filled with homework and school deadlines or juggling the kids' busy schedules but it is still a

day to accomplish. Whether it is finally getting to that attic mess and sorting through it; taking on the garden weeds now that the weather is warm; making runs to various stores for returns, catching up on the bills . . . what would we do without our one "free" day? Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, Sunday arrives and our day planners are blank. No weddings or bar-mitzvahs to attend, no major task to tackle, house and bills pretty much in order. Occasionally we are actually caught up for the moment and we truly have a day off. I have friends whose perfect day off means sleeping in, lounging around in a robe, maybe going out for a late lunch, curling up with a book . . They really know how to take advantage of free time. Other people I know turn to shopping when they have an open Sunday and can happily browse through stores for hours. I'm not very good with too much free time. And I've never been a big shopper. Give me a Sunday with nothing to do and I get a little panicky. I like crossing items off my to-do list and don't do well with a block of too many open hours. I will usually hop into my car and start driving. While I don't take advantage of a day off like most, I still appreciate the oppor-

But that brings me back to the six day work and school week. I may be busy six days a week but it's by my own design and doing. If I didn't have that one potential day to relax I'd feel stifled. When I visit my children and grandchildren in Israel I routinely walk the older ones to school in the morning and pick them up about five hours later. They have school six days a week but are out by one or one thirty. No free day and yet every afternoon home early and in need of supervision and entertainment. I told my oldest granddaughter that if she went to school in America she wouldn't get home until four o'clock but she'd be off a full day once a week. "What do you think about that?" I asked.

20

"I wouldn't like that at all," was her quick response. It's probably because that is what she's used to. We all prefer the familiar. But I thought she'd like the idea of a totally school-free day. Well, by the time you read this schools on both sides of the Atlantic will be out and everyone will be off for a while. Whether your children and grandchildren are in day camp or sleep-away camp, in bungalow colonies or traveling, or simply at home taking a well-deserved break, the change of pace we experience in the summer is always welcome and appreciated. Now's the time to enjoy the longer days and slower motion because before you know it it will be time to pack up those knapsacks, sharpen those pencils and head back to school, however many days a week they go.

Start the School Year Right: A Nutrition Primer for Parents

C

By Anastasia Schepers MS, RDN, CN

hildhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States, affecting 1 in 6 children and adolescents and putting them at risk for poor health. Despite recent declines in the prevalence among preschool-aged children, obesity amongst all children is still too high, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Preventing childhood obesity requires a multifaceted approach. Parents, health professionals, schools and communities can all participate in educating and promoting behaviors and habits that focus on making healthy food and beverage choices and getting enough physical activity. Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program at Cohen Children’s Medical Center provides nutrition and fitness education to support overall health and wellness for youngsters and families throughout our region. Kohl’s has donated more than $4.4 million to Cohen Children’s since 2000 – including its most recent donation of nearly $211,000 to support the program’s obesity prevention efforts. Visit KohlsHealthyKidsNY. com to learn more. Here are some measures parents can take at home to promote health and fight childhood obesity: Don’t Skip Breakfast. A healthy breakfast provides the body with the fuel it needs to stay active and focused throughout the day. Breakfast should include a minimum of two, preferably three food groups. For example, the following breakfasts provide nutrients from the grain, fruit and dairy groups: whole grain cereal with sliced bananas and low fat or fat free milk; a whole grain toaster waffle, strawberries and glass of low fat or fat free milk. Whole grain toast or English muffin accompanied by a scrambled egg or spread of peanut or almond butter and fresh orange wedges provide nutrients from the grain, protein and fruit groups. Pack a Winning Lunch. If your child doesn’t enjoy the foods you send, get their feedback and let them choose between several nutritious options. Children of all ages welcome a change from sliced bread. Try whole grain pita pockets, wraps or whole grain crackers instead. Be sure to include lean protein foods like turkey, roast beef, tuna or hard-boiled eggs. For young children, pack bite-sized foods that are easy and quick to eat. Cut a sandwich into quarters – squares or triangles. Grape tomatoes are easier to eat than stringy celery sticks. Squeeze a few drops of lemon or lime juice on apple slices to prevent them from turning brown. Invest in an insulated lunch bag or box and include an ice pack to keep perishables cold until lunchtime. A frozen water bottle can also act as an ice pack.

28

Follow 5-2-1-0, one healthy habit at a time. What is 5-2-1-0? If there was a secret code to a healthy childhood, it would be 5-2-1-0. This nationally recognized evidence-based campaign was designed to encourage health promoting strategies and behaviors that can prevent childhood obesity. 5-2-1-0 has become a national movement, adopted by hospitals, schools, child care settings and communities. Try to add one new healthpromoting habit each week. 5 – Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day. 2 – Limit recreational screen time to no more than two hours a day. 1 – Get one hour or more of physical activity each day. 0 – Limit or eliminate sugary drinks and juice. Drink more water and low fat milk. Plan Ahead for Heathy After School Snacks. Children arrive home from school hungry. This is a perfect time to serve healthful snacks that incorporate fruits and vegetables like hummus with cut up red and green peppers, baby carrots or pita chips. Try fat free vanilla yogurt sprinkled with cinnamon as a dip for sliced apples. Involve Children in Meal Preparation. Allowing children to participate in meal planning, shopping and simple meal preparation can help enhance their selfesteem as well as help develop lasting healthy eating habits. Check out USDA Mixing Bowl, an online tool featuring a collection of healthy and budget-friendly recipes and resources. https://whatscooking.fns.usda. gov. Think the Drink. Encourage children and teens to drink water and low fat or fat free milk. Enhance the flavor of water by adding fresh lemon, lime, or orange wedges and keep a pitcher in the fridge. Alternatively, mix seltzer with a splash of 100% fruit juice. Limit fruit juice and sweetened beverages. Juice products labeled “-ade,” “drink,” or “punch” often contain 5% juice or less. Sometimes, the only difference between these beverages and soda is that they have added Vitamin C. Monitor Screen Time. Parents are encouraged to monitor and limit recreational screen time to 1 to 2 hours per day. Video and computer games, television viewing, and excessive cell phone use all lead to inactivity and take time away from health-promoting physical activity and outdoor play. Anastasia Schepers, MS, RDN, CDN is a Nutritionist in the Department of Community Outreach and the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Northwell Health.

Every day we make lots of choices and decisions that can impact our health. Some decisions involve what we eat, where we eat, what we drink, how we get to school or work and how we spend our free time. With overweight and obesity affecting so many of our youth today, parents and caregivers need tools to help establish good habits that can have a lasting impact on their family’s health.

JUDD’S MEMPHIS KITCHEN/ JUDD’S HOLY ROLLERS

By: Rachel Rosenberg

FAL L

A

s we head back to school, the students of Yeshiva University and other New York schools are hoping Judd’s Memphis Kitchen/ Judd’s Holy Rollers returns to school with them. Judd’s Memphis Kitchen is a unique traveling kosher barbeque food cart. They often set up on a street corner near YU and other schools populated by kosher eaters. In addition to the traveling cart, Judd’s offers catering services. I was lucky enough to partake recently in some excellent barbeque as Judd’s set itself up in Orlando on erev Pesach, catered a business event in Las Vegas, and then wowed my family at my niece’s poolside birthday party. I witnessed firsthand as Yehuda Joffre a/k/a “Judd”, together with his chief marketer and coordinator, Jack Friedman and sous chef Meir Popowitz, managed to churn out spicy beef burgers, sausages, skirt steak and my personal favorite — grilled lemon chicken — and feed or should I say stuff, dozens of satisfied customers. Incredibly, they cook all their meat from a small traveling barbeque. For health and diet reasons I try to limit the amount of red meat I eat. Until Judd’s Holy Rollers comes rolling in and I can’t resist. Their burgers are mixed with a blend of secret spices that leaves even foodies like me wondering how to replicate them. The most popular of their burgers is the “The 100 Dollar Burger” served on a thick doughy bun topped with smoked meat, house made coleslaw and caramelized onions. After my first bite into this hearty burger, the smoke and heat poured out of the open burger, and I knew I was doomed. There was no way I could only eat one. I did leave out the bun though for my second (and third). Judd’s Memphis roots shine mostly in his wood smoked meats prepared in advance in Judd’s kitchen. I don’t know how he does it but the pulled meat is as soft as butter and the wood smoked flavors abound.

Everything off of Judd’s grill is unique, and very definitely not your typical barbeque. The hot dogs aren’t simple, boring hot dogs. They are thick, extra-long spicy sausages grilled to perfection. Once again, I couldn’t help myself but instead of the added carbs from the bun, sliced up a sausage to share with others. The grilled chicken is ridiculously good. They are spiced with yet another blend of secret spices with a distinct lemon flavor. They are best sampled piping hot right off the grill. Okay, I’ll admit it; I couldn’t help myself and grabbed some off with my bare hands. I highly recommend you all follow Judd’s rolling food cart to its next destination. They can be found on a corner in Cedarhurst in the 5 Towns, different street corners in New York City and, of course, all over Brooklyn. Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney and name partner at Rosenberg and Steinmetz PC, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. She lives in Woodmere with her husband and three sons.

COUNTRY 1 1/2 Lb chicken cutlets 1/8 Tsp salt 1/8 Tsp pepper 3-4 Tbsp oil 2 Large onions, diced Vegetables, optional 3 Tbsp honey 3 Tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp mustard Sometimes I go through recipe phases. I’ll get hooked on one and make it again and again, until a new recipe enters the repertoire for the next couple of months. This is one of the recipes that’s currently a staple in my house. It’s so quick and easy, no wonder I’ve been making it over and over! In the photo, you’ll notice strips of red and yellow peppers. This recipe is so versatile, though, you can use any produce that’s in season or sitting in your vegetable drawer — or none at all! One ingredient you can’t skip, though, are those onions. They get sauteed to the most delicious caramelized goodness that I often add an additional onion to the recipe so peace will reign at my supper table. 1 Cut chicken cutlets into 2-inch strips. Season with salt and pepper. 2 Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. 3Add chicken strips and cook for 5 minutes. Add vegetables, if using. 4 Add honey, mustard, and soy sauce. Cook for 10-15 minutes (stirring occasionally), or until sauce reduces. Serve over orzo or rice.

MIND OVER MATTER:

What Can Your School Social Worker Do For you?

Y

By Robin Daar LCSW, RN

es, it’s that time of the year again. Hopefully, you’ve had a wonderful summer and now it’s time to get the kids ready for school and get the school year on track. Did you get the new knapsacks – are the children prepared with their pencils, sharpeners and lunch boxes? Have you met the teachers or seen the inside of your child’s classrooms yet? The beginning of the school year is such a busy time! I do not have school age children anymore but the beginning of the school year is busy for me too! That’s because for many years I have started the school year with the students as a school social worker. I have found in the years I have worked as a school social worker that parents do not always know if their child’s school has such a professional on staff and if they are aware of it, they usually don’t know how to utilize them. As this is the beginning of the school year I thought it wise and hopefully helpful to tell you what we do in your children’s schools. From years of working in schools I have developed the greatest respect for teachers. I now realize how difficult their jobs are and how invested they are in their students. I have also learned that the best teachers recognize that with all their “bags of tricks” numerous factors may interfere with their ability to reach some of their students. Children today are affected by so many social forces which can make childhood more complicated than we would like. Many families are in a state of change and until it becomes stabilized in whatever form, children’s unmet physical and emotional needs will interfere with their ability to learn and adjust in school. So what is it we do? When I introduce myself to the children at the beginning of the school year I tell the younger children that I’m a “feelings teacher.” What I tell the older students is that I am here to help them deal with feelings/situations that come up that may be affecting their ability to be successful in school. I explain that everything they tell me is confidential and that it is never repeated unless I feel what they tell me is unsafe for them or someone else. The following is a brief description of what School Social Workers do. Keep in mind that our responsibilities may differ from school to school. School social worker is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School social workers bring unique knowledge and

50

skills to the school system and the student services team. School social workers are trained mental health professionals who assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support, consultation to teachers, parents and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling. School Social Workers are instrumental in furthering the mission of the schools which is to provide a setting for teaching, learning and for the attainment of competence and confidence. So how does all of the above translate into what School Social Workers really do? At the beginning of the school year I attend a meeting where I will be given a list of students who are mandated for counseling. These are all students who have IEPs (individualized educational plans). This means they have some learning issues that require resources such as special education, physical therapy, speech therapy and sometimes counseling. These students have been tested and it has been determined that they display some weaknesses and would benefit from such services. At this meeting I am assigned students who will be receiving counseling as a service for the current school year. Some students receive counseling weekly although there are some that are counseled up to three times a week, depending on their needs. All students have different counseling needs. Some common needs include: • Self Esteem • Social Skills • Coping Skills • Anger Issues • Depression • Anxiety • Conflict resolution And many others…. As a School Social Worker I also work with students who do not have IEPs. I work with students who have concerns/struggles and address them as they arise during the school year. I may only see these students once or twice to address something that may be urgent or time sensitive. I come to counsel these children from teacher’s referrals, parent’s requests or a child himself seeking me out. Examples of these types of counseling issues are: • Children with adjustment/separation problems in school • Children who have suffered a loss • Children who have trouble following teacher’s directives • Children who are experiencing teasing/bullying And many more… Other tasks we do include: • Participating in Special Education meetings as well as Individual Educational Planning meetings. • Working with those problems in a child’s living situation that affect the child’s adjustment in school.

Office: (516)-558-3010 Fax: (516)-558-3011 Email: ElieCohenPsych@gmail.com Continued from page 50 • Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability. • Mobilizing family, school and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program. • Assisting in developing positive intervention strategies. • Consulting with parents. • Referring a child to the school psychologist to evaluate student for possible learning issues (This is a process that has to go through the school district). • Working with classroom teachers. • Pushing into classrooms to do programming for students. So how can you best utilize your School Social Worker? First, introduce yourself the next time you are at your child’s school. Having a preliminary introduction will make it easier for both of you to address issues later on. Second, don’t be shy about asking “stupid” questions. There are no stupid questions, just common questions that all parents need to ask. Third, if your intuition is telling you something is off, trust your instincts. Ask the social worker for a private meeting to discuss your concerns. Finally, be an advocate for your child. Here’s to a great school year. Looking forward to greeting you and your child soon!!!

s parents we are always concerned about whether we are giving our children the right opportunities to obtain the skills necessary for them to succeed. In today’s world of technology learning how to Program - Code, as we now call it, empowers kids and gives them the tools to express themselves. For our young children who start using technology with the swipe of their little fingers, going from simply interacting with technology to creating technology and expressing oneself in new ways opens many doors for their future, professionally. We know that when learning a new language it is best to start when you are young. So too when it comes to learning how to code. Learning to write programs stretches your mind and introducing computer programming to your kids can be a challenge, especially for those who aren’t familiar with code. Fortunately, in the last few years, a number of apps, software, and guides have been produced that make the complex subject of computer coding easy to grasp for young learners. So where do you begin? Here are a few resources that parents can share with their kids to help them start learning about programming.

www.tynker.com Tynker’s Hour of Code Free Activities: Tynker is fun and through nteractive games makes it easy for kids to learn basic "computational thinking and programming skills." Their Hour of Code feature is a great starting point and there is a Parents section for ideas and tips to get started. https://www.madewithcode.com/ Google’s Made With Code project has a mission of encouraging girls to pursue careers in computer science. The Made With Code projects are easy to follow for both beginners and intermediate coders. www.scratch.mit.edu Scratch is one of the most popular coding tools for kids, and it’s designed to help students with little to no coding experience. This software lets students create animations and stories with building blocks that mimic the structure of computer code. Also included is a wonderful web-based beginner’s’ guide that will help students get started.

for wider access to computer science learning in schools. Code.org has K-8 lessons that are an Introduction to Computer Science. There are also links to informative tutorials from a variety of sources. www.kahnacademy.org Khan Academy’s self-paced courses introduce a number of fascinating coding concepts to kids. From learning the basics of computer programming and animation, to more complex computer science subjects, these lessons are the perfect jumping off point for curious students. https://www.codecademy.com/ For more advanced students this is an educational website that teaches step by step new programming languages.
