made a long-overdue discovery today. Brown is not my color. Not just not my color but it really looks bad on me. Or I look bad in it. I kind of suspected this even a few years ago but somehow when a friend made a passing comment to me I didn't let her words sink in. As you know I don't often wear bright colors and patterns. I must have mentioned this dozens of times over the past three decades of Spotlights I've written – at least two a year focused on fashion. Like most women I wear a lot of black – in every season. But I am also very comfy in gray, navy and – until today – brown. I have a number of brown business skirts, pinstriped or other subtle patterns. I have turtlenecks, sweaters, vests, belts and boots in varying shades of rich dark brown. And also, of course, matching handbags. I spent a few years searching for brown tortoise hanging earrings and when I couldn't find what I was looking for actually had something made up by a local jeweler. I thought my brown ensembles were rich in color, elegant in style and an acceptable spin on basic black.

I periodically sported my brown-themed get-ups and never gave a thought as to whether I actually looked good in those tones. I did, however, notice something early on. Although I tried to coordinate my eye shadow and other make-up with my attire, whenever I highlighted my eyes in shades of coffee, rust or the like I looked sickly. Interestingly, my older sister always sports brown shadow and it looks terrific on her. My older daughter too. Maybe it's their brown eyes. On me those colors were a disaster and I soon stopped trying to match my make-up to my wardrobe. But I never extended the thought to my dress. Several years ago I was at a party wearing a brown Ralph Lauren jumper with cranberry piping and a brown turtleneck and accessories. I thought I looked sharp. The following day I attended a wedding and wore a black two piece suit. One of my rather outspoken but lovable friends saw me pass by and whispered in my ear: "You look great but don't ever wear that brown outfit again. It's really not flattering." As I said, I kind of smiled and moved on. I was

Continued from page 14 a little puzzled but didn't let her words sink in. I did wear the Ralph Lauren again and while I may not have gotten compliments no one barred me from attending events. Fast forward to today. I have a bad cold and was feeling pretty dreary. I needed to get dressed but had little energy to put much thought into my outfit. I perused my closet and came across a heather brown dress I had found in TJ Maxx two years ago. Three quarter sleeves, half zipper in the back, A-line, nice length, washable and very easy. It came in gray too and I bought them both. These were great dresses for travelling and they carried me through most seasons. I reached for the brown one. Didn't even have to un-zipper it, just slipped it over my head. Because the temperature was in the 20's I grabbed a chocolate cardigan and threw it over the dress, unbuttoned. I slipped on dark brown opaques and the same shade leather booties and was ready to roll. I don't usually pass through my living room in the mornings. I probably can go a whole week without stepping into that room. But for some reason this morning I segued through it before reaching for my coat. Probably an album on the coffee table was out of line or some minor disturbance in the field caught my eye. In any case I turned right into the living room and was treated to a full view of myself in the large gilded mirror above the couch. It was not a pleasant picture. Granted, my nose was red and my eyes droopy but, honestly that wasn't it. The brown dress was so drab on me and unbecoming I stood there in shock. Suddenly I recalled my brown make-up fiascoes and then what should have been an eye-opening comment from my friend several year ago. I really look terrible in brown. Did I run upstairs and change my garb? No, I was too sick and wiped. But I felt self-conscious all day and when I finally take the dress off this evening, I will not be hanging it back in my closet. I am hardly a slave to fashion. I'm usually the last one to discover a trend and even then usually don't incorporate it into my wardrobe. But when something is clearly unflattering, it's time to make a change. This is our March Spring fashion issue and you'll find loads of exciting new ideas for every member of the family. Check them out and enjoy. Just keep in mind what usually works for you don't get sidelined by other enticing factors like you-know-who.

silhouettes during the 1940s. His mid-century chemise dresses were created a full decade before the style became popular in the 1950s. Another of his important innovations, the culotte for day and formal wear, debuted in 1960 and caused a sensation but took years to gain widespread popularity. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Norell’s dazzling eveningwear, especially his glittering “mermaid” gowns. Painstakingly crafted in his atelier solely for the readyto-wear market, the mermaids are generously but carefully frosted with thousands of sequins that were handsewn onto knitted jersey. While some of his designs had necklines that were embellished with sable trim or jeweled buttons, all his formal clothing was noted for its clean lines and comfort. Not surprisingly, Norell attracted an A-list clientele, including stars such as Lauren Bacall and several first ladies of the United States. His work was featured in hit films and on television Norell, Pilgrim collar wool coat, fall 1968. during the 1950s Photograph of Kenneth Pool Collection © Marc and 1960s, and Fowler. Norell was rightfully celebrated and lauded during his lifetime. More than 45 years after his death, we continue to marvel at the rich legacy of the “Dean of American Fashion.” The exhibition is accompanied by a book titled Norell: Master of American Fashion. Written by Jeffrey Banks and Doria de La Chapelle, it is the first monographic study of this groundbreaking designer. It is published by Rizzoli. Norell: Dean of American Fashion is made possible by the support of the Couture Council.
