woke up this morning and knew it was another gloomy day. Without even lifting the shades I could tell it was dark outside when it should have already been light. Another overcast day in an endless winter that has worked its way well into spring. When I finally pulled at the accordion shades I was met not only with the grey sky I expected, but a dense fog coupled with a light mist. It was hard to believe that May was only three days away. While this time of year I could easily be dressed in a light outfit – both in color and weight – I, once again, donned black tights and booties and grabbed my winter jacket on my way out. This weather was unsettling. When I reached my destination, I removed my outerwear, shook off the mist and joined my friends indoors. More than a couple of hours passed before I left to brave the outdoors again but something almost magical had occurred while I had been inside. As soon as I stepped foot on the building’s stoop I realized that the fog and mist were gone and in their place was

a beautiful light blue, cloudless sky. Impossible, but true. As I started walking back home I had to unbutton my jacket and suddenly felt foolish in my dark and heavy outfit. I know it was unlikely, but it seemed as if in the block of time I had been inside spring had finally arrived. Had those cherry blossoms been out and in bloom this morning? Wouldn’t I have noticed them? And the beautiful canopy of white flowers on the pear trees across the street from my house? How had I not spotted them this week, or yesterday, or when I left the house today? As I turned onto my walkway I clearly heard the the chirping of happy birds. In a blink of an eye the season had finally changed. I knew with the unpredictable weather we’ve been having tomorrow’s temperatures could drop and it could be dark and rainy again, but it seemed unlikely. I took the handful of steps up to my front porch and was so taken with the gift of the sudden clear sky, and the trees offering fragrant blooms and warbling birdsong that I didn’t want to head indoors yet. The cushions on

my porch glider were still bagged and sealed in the garage. Up until today no reason to bring them out. The awning had deteriorated during the harsh winter and hung ripped and loose. Nonetheless, I sat down and began to swing. I heard children laughing in my neighbors’ yards. No doubt, they too, had shed their coats and jackets and were enjoying the sunshine. I lifted my face to catch some welcome rays and could actually envision one day soon taking my grandchildren back to Cedarhurst Park, pulling out my bike, taking my first season’s walk on the beach. Spring was officially half over and summer was on its way. June is often a month of celebrations – weddings,
for sure, but also graduations and, maybe it’s my imaginations, but extra birthdays and other special occasions. June is the month where schools let out, kids get ready to head to camp, bungalow colonies begin to fill and stores clear their racks to make room for new lines. Whether you are making a simcha, taking a trip, heading up to the Catskills or just taking advantage of the season’s sales, we’ve got everything you need right here in these pages. Enjoy the issue, the slower pace, the beautiful weather, the summer ahead. See you back in the fall!

Fun in the Sun
W
By Naomi Scheier
ith summer on the horizon, vacation plans are being made and getaways from the hustle and bustle of daily life are on our minds. When traveling, there are many important things one must always bear in mind and keep on hand. The first and perhaps most important is sunscreen. Whether it be a day at the beach, walking outdoors, or traveling abroad, the hot summer sun is everywhere and protection is necessary. In hot desert climates like Israel, the sun has an even stronger effect than we think. It is extremely bright and can cause some serious burns. Sunscreen is important regardless of your location because it shields the skin and underlying tissue
en n
from harmful ultraviolet rays. Protecting the skin with sunscreen lowers the risk of sunburns, skin damage and skin cancer. So for starters, choose a sunscreen that has a minimum of SPF 30 and is waterproof. Apply it before going out into the sun and reapply as necessary. A great thing about sunscreen is that it can be found in many of the moisturizers that we already use and love such as Neutrogena, Clinique, Lancome, Shiseido and CeraVe. If you choose to use sunscreen separate from your moisturizer, apply it after your regular creams to get maximum protection. Another thing to keep in mind while in Israel, traveling or just being outside, is water. Especially in hot climates, many people can experience dehydration symptoms without even feeling it and therefore must constantly replenish their water supply. It is important to stay hydrated in order to avoid nausea, dizziness, headaches and fatigue. Bear in mind that in hot climates you’re sweating out a lot of water in order to keep your body cool. Hats, sunglasses and lightweight clothing are traveling essentials. In case you forget to pack the hat, pick one up at the local gift shop and bring it home as a souvenir! In terms of flying, there are many things we can bring along in our carry-ons to keep us looking fresh and feeling good throughout and after a long flight. On long overnight flights, women are always looking for ways to keep themselves fresh on the plane. So ladies, skip the contact lenses and make up for the flight. You want to travel with a clean face, traveling with a full face of make up, especially on those Israel flights, allows dirt particles in the contained cabin air to settle in on your face. Because plane air tends to be dry, moisturizing your face before, during and after the flight is a perfect way to keep the skin hydrated. Before landing, freshen up with the essentials in your carry-on. Pack moist facial cloths, a travel toothbrush, and some light bronzer to give you that post flight pick me up. Wherever you are traveling or even if you're not, maintaining a healthy skin regimen is crucial to prevent sudden breakouts and sunburns. Even though they seem convenient, vacation time is not right the time to test out those little travel size samples they give you at Macy’s and it is definitely the wrong time to deal with unexpected skin reactions. Sunscreen, water, a small travel kit, and a good book are enough to be enjoyed from the Jersey shores to the Greek Isles and Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy your summer plans and don’t forget the hat!
All the best, Naomi

RAMEN SHAKSHUKA
SUMMER BERRY & FETA SALAD WITH BASIL LIME DRESSING
Pareve ■ Yields 3 servings Ah, shakshuka, you are my all-time favorite breakfast. I love changing you up with different ingredients, and serving you for brunch, placing the pan right in the middle of the table, family style. I’ve created so many variations of shakshuka on my blog over the years — from garbanzo bean shakshuka to spaghetti squash shakshuka, eggplant shakshuka, and even Mexican quinoa shakshuka. This ramen-based recipe is a super-simplified version, so you can make it with very few ingredients on hand. • 2 cups marinara sauce • 1 tsp sriracha • 1½ cups water • 2 (3-oz.) pkgs ramen noodles, flavoring packets discarded • 6 eggs • 2 scallions, sliced • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds In a skillet, bring marinara sauce, sriracha, and water to a simmer. Add ramen noodles; cook until noodles start to soften, about 2 minutes. Flip noodles; continue to cook until the block of ramen loosens, another 2 minutes. (Don’t worry if they are not cooked through; they will continue to cook along with the eggs.) With a spoon, make a well in the sauce. Crack an egg into a small bowl; gently slide it into the well. Repeat, one by one, making wells and sliding
Dairy ■ Yields 4 servings This is your new must-have summer salad. Forget saving it for Shavuos or dairy Shabbos meals. You’re going to want to make salad for lunch just so you can eat this. Trust me. • 5 oz. frisée or arugula • 1 cup sliced strawberries • ½ cup blueberries • ⅓ cup candied pecans • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese • Basil Lime Dressing • ⅓ cup light olive oil • 3 Tbsp lime juice • 2 Tbsp honey • ½ cup zpacked fresh basil leaves • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste Prepare the dressing: Place oil, lime juice, honey, basil, salt, and pepper into a blender or food processor; blend until smooth and creamy. Spread the frisée on a platter; top with strawberries, blueberries, pecans, red onion, and feta. e are all living in a digital world and our children are growing up in this digital environment. That is why it’s important for us to teach them how to become responsible digital citizens. When I was raising my children it was important to teach them proper social etiquette. We made sure to tell our children to say “Thank you” and “Please” when necessary. We “shushed” them when they shouted in public. We wanted them to understand the importance of proper behavior. So too our children now need to learn Netiquette – the rules on proper etiquette on the Internet since that is their world they socialize in. Schools and parents need to teach the importance on how to become responsible digital citizens. Helping children learn to use proper online etiquette, recognize how their personal information may be collected and used online as their digital footprint and learning how technology is here to improve the world around them can help prepare them for successfully navigating life in a connected world. Cyberbullying is a constant challenge that our children encounter online everyday. They need to learn strategies to deal responsibly with this. Here is a tip that you can teach your child if they ever feel cyberbullied. Teach them the word STOP. Step away from the situation. Tell a trusted adult, Okay websites that your parents approve, Pause and think before you post. Teach them about being an Upstander and not a Bystander when it comes to cyberbullying. Navigating cyberbullying, privacy, safety and other digital dilemmas is a real challenge for them. Therefore mastering these skills of how to become a good digital citizen provides incredible opportunities for students to learn, connect and the ability to make increasingly sound judgments about the use of technology in their daily life. Every child should become a responsible digital citizen who knows how to harness the learning potential of digital media in a 24/7 connected world, safely, effectively, ethically and respectfully. In order to accomplish this goal for our children we need to give them those skills. Here is a website that will give you some more guidelines and tips to help you teach your children about how to be a good digital citizen https://www.commonsense. org/education/digital-citizenship
