I just came back from a twelve day trip to Israel. Well that’s kind of misleading. A trip may make you think I did some touring. To the Dead Sea for example, or the Carmel Spa for a treat. No I really should say I came back from a twelve day stay in Jerusalem. But you know what? Even that is not exactly accurate. It suggests that I passed almost two weeks exploring this beautiful, ancient city. Which is more than possible. You can spend endless days discovering all Jerusalem has to offer, from amazing excavations to bustling marketplaces, from breathtaking overlooks to powerful museums. You can schedule a complete summer vacation uncovering the beauty and depth of Jerusalem without
venturing beyond its city limits. But I didn’t. What I really should say is that I just came back from spending a dozen days on a particular block in a Jerusalem town. Now that’s more to the point. You see I flew to Israel to be with my daughter and her delicious family to welcome the arrival of a new member to their fold. I arrived five days before the blessed event and spent those days enjoying my grandchildren, taking them to gan in the morning and picking them up early afternoon. We kept doctors’ appointments, stocked up on groceries, visited some neighbors and shared a few play dates. Yes, Continued on page 116

NEW! Special Teen Collection
B eauty Bulletin - Brides by: Naomi Scheier Perfect skin for your wedding day is the goal of every bride! Some women have naturally perfect skin, but even they can suffer from breakouts due to stress and nerves. How best to take care of your skin pre wedding day? Start with discarding old makeup and skin care products. They can easily have germs that can cause skin problems. Makeup brushes should always be washed at least once a week. Makeup sponges should be washed after every Hair and Make-Up use. Use Q tips to remove foundation and moisturizer from their jars. Don’t store your makeup in the bathroom (it’s too humid and humidity breeds germs). Always store your makeup in a cool dry spot. You can even keep it in the refrigerator. Make sure all your products are sealed tightly! Now, on to getting that perfect skin. First, prep your skin with a primer. It fills in pores and fine lines
32
so that the foundation glides on evenly. Try “Stila Hydrating Primer with SPF20.” Picking the right foundation shade and formula guarantees a natural, not masklike result. A yellow-beige based color works on most women. Try Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer by Senegcence Cosmetics. A liquid luminizer gives the skin a luminescence and a dewy glow. Don’t forget to blend, including your blush and powder, for a flawless finish. Try Physicians Formula by Naomi Scheier Mineral Wear Airbrushing Kabuki Brush and Makesense Foundation Penalizer from Senegcence Cosmetics. Always remember: A smile gives the skin the best glow on your wedding day! MAZEL TOV Enjoy your Simcha. NAOMI

MIND OVER MATTER: An Engaging Moment By: Robin Daar, LCSW, RN Engagements are wonderful! It is an exciting time for a new couple. It is also a time to get to know your in-laws and for them to get to know you. This is a honeymoon period in that we are on our best behavior so we can make a good impression. Once the relationship is underway we start getting more comfortable with our new families. Hopefully, we get comfortable enough being “ourselves”. It is then that our relationship with our respective in-laws becomes just that, a real relationship. Sometimes, if we are fortunate, it becomes a wonderful “partnership.”. Other times, unfortunately, it can be disappointing or even worse. I was once a young married with in-laws and now I am an in-law myself. Like with any relationship I can tell you it’s constantly a work in progress. Having been on both ends I believe I have a pretty good idea of what both a daughter-in-law and a mother-in-law would like to experience in a relationship. My assumption here is that both parties would like to have a positive, working relationship. (If they do not then this article is not for you.) What does a mother-in-law or daughter-inlaw want? Well let’s start with a daughter-inlaw. According to an article in “Family Life” there are many things we would like our mothers-in-law to understand. 1. Cut the apron strings to your son: Don’t expect your son to do what you want him to do. Expect and encourage him to consult with his wife. Encourage your son to build, develop and define his marriage role. Don’t fight for position by grasping and grabbing for your son’s time and emotions. ”Good mamas want their kids to have good marriages”. 2. Talk with your daughter-in-laws about difficult issues. Conflicts occur in all families.
46
Conflicts can be resolved lovingly and constructively. Tiptoeing around the problem will only hurt everyone in the long run. Ask your daughter-in-law to let you know if you have hurt or insulted her. 3. Compliment your daughter-in-law and never criticize her. Make an effort to praise, applaud and thank her. Think about what you yourself might want to hear as a daughter-inlaw. The rest should be easy. 4. Your daughter-in-law may be different from you. Accept her for who she is. Realize she was not raised by you and may have different standards. Do not try to change her into what you would like her to be. 5. Only give advice when asked. Be aware that sometimes a mother-in-law’s suggestion can be misinterpreted as a criticism. 6. Your daughter-in-law may be different from you. A good mother-in-law encourages, accepts and loves unconditionally. 7. Remember your child has his own faults. Your child was not perfect before she met him. 8. Try to understand and accept goals your son and his wife have. (Whether you agree with them or not.) 9. Cultivate your relationship with your daughter-in-law. Spend time alone with her doing things you both like. When you call your son and your daughter-in-law answers the phone visit with her for a few minutes before asking for him. 10. Take the initiative to connect to both your son and your daughter-in-law. Take the grandchildren (if there are any), for the night or the afternoon so the couple can be alone together. Of course I can go and on but we all know it takes “two to tango” so what about the other dancing partner? I can speak for myself when I say that when I got married I wasn’t sure what to expect from my mother-in-law, having never been married before. I can tell you what I thought would happen but I can honestly say some of it was very unrealistic. What we expect from our mothers-in-law differs from person to person. I believe that much of it has to do with how we are raised by our own parents. It’s important to

Continued from page 46 remember that she may be the most wonderful person in the world and you may have a terrific relationship with her but she is still not your mother. So what is fair for a mother-in-law to expect and a daughter-in-law to give? 1. Remember your mother-in-law is somebody else’s child. They are just people like you and me which means they have the same needs and desires. When someone new comes into their lives, especially someone that changes all the dynamics, you need to be patient and understand their perspective (within reason), as well as our own. 2. Mothers-in-law may need time. Remember, they raise their children knowing that they will leave them and love others. Give them time. Mothers-in-law want to open their hearts to you and love you. 3. Call them when you can. Mothers-in-law have to understand that you have very busy lives but they want to hear from you and develop a relationship with you independent of their son/your husband. 4. Be honest with them. If you are upset or angry for some reason don’t hold it in and let it build up. Don’t speak to your husband about it and expect him to do something about it. Sit down with your mother-in-law and have an honest heart to heart. It’ll be good for both of you. 5. Thank your mother-in-law. We should never take anything we get for granted. Be thankful for what she does for you and your family. Tell her so and if you love her tell her that too.
6. Accept your in-law with all her flaws as part of life. You don’t have to like everything about her but it is important to be able to live in peace together. 7. Make your mother-in-law feel valuable. It’s difficult to realize that the lives of mothersin-law change drastically after their children marry. Try not to say “I’d rather do it myself” if you can really use her help. 8. “Don’t sweat the small stuff” - we’ve all heard this phrase. If you can do something little that would make her happy do it. If there’s something small she does that annoys you try to let it go. So what if she lets the kids stay up a bit later when they sleep over or she gives them ice cream before lunch occasionally. In the big picture is it worth making an issue out of it? 9. Mothers-in-law may have a wealth of knowledge to share, so listen even if you don’t follow their advice. Explain to her that you get what she is saying but you feel strongly about doing it differently (as you are the parent). There is so much more but most of it you already know. I just want to make the point that you cannot imagine how important and how much impact the relationship you have with your daughter-in-law/mother-in-law will have on your marriage and your life. Enjoy the blessing of having family. With such big problems in the world this is a small mountain we can all be successful climbing. THE WEDDING FEAST By: Rachel Rosenberg
L
diet conscious, cut up vegetables and fruit in little cups are always appreciated. After the Chupa, guests make their way to their tables and start eyeing the first course to determine whether the food at this wedding will be fabulous, mediocre, simply edible or do they need to plan an emergency run to the closest kosher restaurant immediately after the wedding? This is the moment for an impressive opening course. Often the first course is still being brought out as guests are arriving. It is essential and inexpensive to ensure that every table is set with cut pickles, coleslaw and breadsticks or challah rolls. I mean we are talking about Orthodox Jews here, and it’s been at least an hour and a half since the smorgasbord, so we’re ready to eat. My preferred first course is a salad with a protein, either seared tuna, grilled chicken or, my favorite, duck. In the summertime, I love a cool intermezzo or palate cleanser, such as mint ice or sorbet. For the main course, your pre-wedding tasting will have helped you select your caterer’s best dish. Guests’ favorite, but alas an expensive option, is a duo of chicken and steak so the guests don’t have to choose one or the other. Almost every caterer will have a fish choice even if the waiter doesn’t offer it. Ask. My grandmother always does and sometimes her fresh salmon surpasses the fatty ribs I am served. The best food at the wedding is often served at the children’s table. I notice guests will occasionally steal a French fry or chicken nugget from the kiddie table. By the time you get to dessert, even the guests who missed the smorgasbord are likely full and ready to go home. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t want dessert. My favorite wedding dessert was served in a to-go container as we left the hall, a napkinwrapped, hot, chocolate chip cookie and a cup of coffee for the road. I would skip the elaborate wedding cake because it rarely gets cut and served, even after you take the obligatory cake cutting
et’s face it, while your guests are thrilled to be part of your joyous event, and they are impressed by your flowers, loving your gown and rocking to the band, they care mostly about one thing. The food. Before I got married, I met with the caterer and sampled everything he offered as part of the menu. It is a misconception that good food at a wedding comes down to what you pay. Rather, it’s all about making smart choices. Of course an unlimited budget doesn’t hurt, but it is unnecessary to achieve guest contentment. I highly recommend that the bride or parent of the bride sit down with the caterer and taste before choosing. You likely won’t have time to eat at the wedding anyway so here is your opportunity to experience all the food your guests will. And yes, I am aware that it is a busy time before the wedding, but you manage to find time for 7 gown fittings, you can squeeze in an hour to eat. Take a friend and make it a free dinner evening out. For those guests lucky (or smart) enough to arrive on time, the highlight of the evening’s food is definitely the smorgasbord. Of course, it is lovely to offer sushi and meat carving stations, but those are not the basics most of your guests are looking for. Almost every male and, although they won’t admit it, many of the women at the smorgasbord, are looking for finger foods. By finger foods I mean junk food, franks in blankets, chicken poppers, mini knishes, and egg rolls. They’ve dieted all day to fit into their wedding best, now they want to enjoy. For those who are 68 JANUARY 2015, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com
picture. A great alternative is a wedding cupcake tower and guests can take home a cupcake. Weddings are, or at least should be, a once in a lifetime event so make every second count, and enjoy. From Soup to Nuts: Inside The Jewish Bakery Recipes and Memories from the Golden Age of Jewish Baking There is nothing like being in a bakery, staring at counters full of freshly made delights, trays full of breads and bagels, cookies and other treats, and deciding what to buy. Small, family-run Jewish bakeries that once lay at the heart of close-knit urban neighborhoods all over America have fallen victim to the demise of the oldschool bakers, shifting demographics and economic realities. But Stanley Ginsberg and Norman Berg seek to keep the memories of these Jewish bakeries alive with their new book, Inside the Jewish Bakery: Recipes and Memories from the Golden Ages of Jewish Baking (Camino Books). More than a collection of recipes, Inside the Jewish Bakery chronicles the history and traditions—as well as the distinctive baked goods—of Ashkenazi Jewry in Eastern Europe and its immigration to America. Utilizing a vast array of sources, the authors have crafted an engaging “edible history.”
1. Preheat your oven to 350° F., with your baking surface in the middle. 2. Combine the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in a mixing bowl and whisk by hand until well blended, 2 to 3 minutes. Add chopped nuts and continue mixing for another minute. 3. Add the eggs, melted butter and vanilla extract, then mix with a large spoon or your hands until the dough is smooth and flexible. 4. On a parchment-lined sheet pan, form the dough into a loaf about 4 in. wide and 2 in. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the dough is set and light brown. 5. Reduce the oven heat to 300° F. Remove the loaf from the oven and immediately slice it to desired thickness. 6. Arrange the slices on the parchment and return to the oven until browned and dry, about 40 minutes. Remove to a rack and let cool. When cooled, dip the ends into melted chocolate, if desired. Great with coffee or tea. KICHELACH
KAMISHBROYT (Jewish Biscotti) Makes two to three dozen slices 2 3/4 cups pastry or all-purpose flour 1 cup less 1 Tbs. granulated sugar 1/8 tsp. table salt 3/4 tsp. baking powder 1 cup chopped pecans, almonds or walnuts 2/3 cup beaten egg 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 tsp. vanilla extract
90
Kichelach are a food minimalist’s delight— light, airy morsels of crunch that were eaten like cookies or salty snacks. Wherever Eastern European Jews settled, kichelach became a mainstay nosh—the perfect accompaniment to a piece of herring or a glass of sweet wine, schnapps, tea or coffee—a delightful change from the ordinary. Today, they’re almost impossible to find, but their memory lives on.
JANUARY 2015, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com
BOW TIES (Eier Kichel) Makes two to three dozen cookies 3 Tbs. + 1 tsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. table salt 4 large eggs, beaten 9 large egg yolks, beaten 3/4 cup vegetable oil 1 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract 1 1/4 tsp. rum flavoring (optional) 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, unsifted 3 cups granulated sugar for coating
outsides, soft and chewy insides, fragrant with almonds. These were expensive to make, highpriced and absolutely worth it—one of the biggest sellers in the bakery. 1 3/4 cups almond or macaroon paste 1 1/2 large egg whites, beaten 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 large egg whites, beaten 2 cups sliced almonds 1 large egg + 1 tsp. of water for wash 1/2 cup simple syrup or melted apricot jam
1. Combine all the ingredients in the bowl of a mixer and use the flat (paddle) beater at low speed to mix to a smooth dough with welldeveloped gluten, about 20 minutes. 2. Preheat your oven to 350° F, with the baking surface in the middle. 3. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured work surface and knead for 2 to 3 minutes, until it no longer sticks. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes to relax the gluten. 4. Spread half the sugar on your work surface and roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/4 in. using the rest of the sugar on the top surface. Use a sharp knife or a pizza wheel to cut the dough into 1 x 2 in. rectangles. Give each piece a half twist to form the bow tie and arrange on a parchment-lined sheet pan about 1 in. apart. 5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the bowties are golden brown. Take care not to underbake; otherwise the kichelach will collapse when they cool. Remove to a rack and let cool for 3 to 4 hours until cold and thoroughly dried out. Store immediately in plastic to retain freshness. Variation In step 4, after you’ve rolled the dough thin, wash it with egg, spread half with a light layer of chocolate or cinnamon filling, fold over to form a three-layer sandwich and roll back out to a thickness of 1/4 in. Cut and bake as above. ALMOND HORNS Makes a dozen 2.5 oz. cookies
1. Cut or break the nut paste into small pieces and combine in a mixing bowl with the first quantity of egg whites and the sugar. Using a fork or the flat (paddle) beater at low medium speed, mix until fully blended with no lumps remaining, 2 to 3 minutes. 2. Gradually add the remaining egg whites until the nut paste mixture is moderately stiff and able to hold its shape. Be careful not to let it get too loose. 3. Put the sliced almonds into a small sheet pan or baking pan. Scale the almond dough to about 2.0 oz. using a small piece of parchment or plastic wrap to prevent sticking. As you weigh each piece, form it into a ball shape and place it on the sliced nuts. 4. This dough is very fragile, so handle it gently. Roll the dough in the nuts until you have a nut-coated log about 6 in. long. Carefully transfer the log to parchment-lined sheet pans, bending it into a horseshoe shape. Repeat with the rest of the dough. 5. Preheat your oven to 375° F, with your baking surface in the middle. Let the horns dry, uncovered, for 30 minutes, then bake until golden brown, 25 to 35 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven and let the horns cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. Very carefully wash them with the simple syrup or melted apricot jam. 7. Let the horns cool completely, at least for 1 hour, before trying to remove them from the pans. Until thoroughly cooled, they’re extremely fragile, and handling them too soon will almost certainly result in breakage. When cool, store in an airtight container. These are even better on the second day, if they last that long.

GRIN AND BARE IT
all, but I still like running a tight ship, being responsible, having high standards, and getting it all done quickly! M.S.
We all come to our marriages with flaws. What’s one flaw of yours you would not change?
When I read something unjust I write a letter to the editor. When I see something can be improved, I write a letter to the company. When something is beyond inappropriate I will write a comment or review. My husband would rather I did nothing and kept quiet. He says “your letter won’t change a thing”. which isn’t true. I have had marvelous results with some of my “reviews”, “letters”, “comments”, etc. I simply cannot be quiet in the face of stupidity. S.W.
I felt the best person to ask was my husband. In his opinion, I shouldn’t change my unrelenting desire for constant unwavering perfection in those I love. D.R. I don’t have any flaws. I’m perfect, lol. The one flaw I won’t change is being early and never being late - having my clocks fifteen minutes ahead of real time. C.B. Starting a sentence and not finishing; keeps people engaged, waiting for the end of one of my countless stories. B.D. I am exacting (lol).
B.K.
Expecting everyone to be on time.
D.H.
I like things clean and neat. At the beginning of my marriage I’m sure I made my spouse (and kids) crazy but I have definitely calmed down. Still I would not change that “flaw” for anything. R.D. Flaws, me??? O.K. I am impatient and expect everything to be done right away, perfectly and without a fuss. My bar is very high in these areas. I know I could/should work on the impatient piece of it
My persistence!
D.S.
I’m overly organized and detail oriented and my husband is certainly not. I shudder to think what our lives would look like if I didn’t organize everything for the two of us! T.B. I’m flawless!!
C.I.
All of them.
B.G.
Though not real life, if I could be flawless - that would be great. E.M. Persistence and determination.
B.K.
Telling the truth. Often undiplomatically.... E.W. I’m not so good at making plattentortes, and can’t seem to stop complaining about that. Is

That would depend on whether I think it’s a flaw or everyone else thinks it’s a flaw and I think it’s just the way I am. Meaning, if it’s emotional, or creative, nobody would understand that and think it’s a flaw. I don’t think it is…. (did that make sense?). Y.S.

Continued from page 12 all on the same block. A long, circular, hilly block. I did not venture far. After the arrival of my newest grandson, B”H, the following seven days were filled with more of the same. Shopping, cooking, gathering supplies, entertaining the troops. Until last Saturday night when, sadly, it was time to take my leave. You all know my feelings about flying. They are not positive. And yet when you have children living out-of-town, be it a four hour drive to Baltimore or an eleven hour flight to Israel, you go. Every free day is thought about in terms of being able to see the children. Vacations to glamorous destinations are a thing of the past. You think about visiting the kids constantly and as soon as one trip is over you start worrying about when you will be able to get there again. So of course I went. It was my great pleasure to be there for such a joyous occasion. I was exactly where I wanted to be and where I was supposed to be. I came back elated, appreciative, excited. But not rested. No tan lines around the watch for me. I arrived home after a hideous (for me, not the other slumbering passengers), twelve hour flight drained and exhausted with, of course, my signature cold and cough. There was no where else I wanted to be those last two weeks, but a vacation it was not. As I said, when your children live out-oftown, all the more so, overseas, you go. You go even if you haven’t been on a “real” vacation in years. You go even if getting there costs more than you had planned to spend. You go even if the flight gives you hives and you always come back sick. And here’s another thing. You go even if going means you’ll be missing special celebrations back home. Almost every time I scheduled a trip to Israel I went missing events back in my neighborhood. While you can’t dance at every wedding and be at two places at once, there are some occasions you really don’t

want to miss. This trip, for example, coincided with the wedding of a very good friend’s daughter. Family friends who we’ve been close to for decades. When I realized my scheduled trip would mean missing this very special simcha I was truly sad. I missed all the pre and post wedding festivities as well as the wedding itself. It’s not the first time it’s happened but it’s painful nonetheless. So now I am back. My trip has ended. The wedding is in the past. My biggest problem should be having to miss one joyful occasion because of another one. We should all have these worries. In the meantime I am already wondering how I can make my way back to Israel knowing full well that whenever I end up scheduling the trip something wonderful will be happening back home. May that something wonderful be happening to you.
