When I polled my usual crew of email friends, acquaintances and associates asking what accessory they had trouble mastering themselves but admired when other women wore, a frequent response that sailed back to me through cyberspace was the scarf. And I agree. The scarf is often challenging to wear and frustrating to figure out and yet it is such an easy and ideal accessory. For one thing, because of its size, the scarf is noticeable and can dramatically alter an outfit. Unlike, for example, a pin or an earring, when you add a scarf to an outfit no one can miss it. It can instantly change a look and add panache to a ho-hum ensemble. The other great thing about a scarf is that almost anyone can wear it. Unlike a skirt or dress it does not come with a zipper, button or

snap. It can’t be too tight, doesn’t give your heels blisters or your back spasms. It doesn’t start pinching your earlobe an hour into your evening of fun, or need to be loosened a notch after a delicious meal. It is one of the few fashion pieces that is accessible to all - any age or size. One other wonderful feature of the scarf is that is comes in a myriad of shapes, styles and colors. The choices are virtually endless. Solids show up in any type of fabric from a sleek silk to a nubby knit. Patterns are designed in florals, paisleys, stripes, polka dots, animal prints - just about anything you can want or imagine. Scarves can be long and loopy or a perfect square. They can be trimmed in fringes or beads or have delicately handContinued on page 15

I’ve come to the conclusion that, as with most abilities in life, some people simply have a natural flair. This doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t learn the skill, but to a select few the talent is inborn. There is an elderly woman in my neighborhood who is grey-headed and a little

stooped but as elegant as anyone decades younger. She wears two accessories with great dignity and ease. One is the ever-present smile spread across her face with which she greets all, and the other is a lovely silk scarf that is invariably draped neatly across her frail frame, secured with a gold brooch. I never really notice her outfits but I always spot the scarf and pin and I believe she has quite a collection. You can tell this women has

I’ve tried that technique numerous times and something is forever shifting. Then there are the women who do that double drape of fabric around their necks, be it woolen in the winter, or of some light, crinkly material in the warmer months. It is a really cool look on them and doesn’t seem contrived, rather casual and chic. I’ve tried that layered

Chronicles Of A Therapist:

Children and Self Expression By Tova Bollag, LMSW Most of us recognize the need and the benefits of developing a signature style and creating our own unique “voice”. As adults, self-expression is something we have the opportunity to do regularly; with the words departing from our mouths, the clothes and accessories with which we adorn ourselves or even the recipes we concoct in our kitchens. We often flip through the latest fashion magazines to see what the newest styles and trends are and may even spend more money on a YomTov outfit than anticipated because “it’s just so me!” Yet, as parents, we often limit and sometimes stifle our children’s need to freely express themselves. As a child behavioral therapist, I have had the opportunity to meet with many parents who have strong concerns regarding negative behavior patterns they begin to notice in their toddlers. Upon intake, I have parents complete an extensive questionnaire in order to better ascertain their parenting style. When asked whether or not they provide opportunities for their child to freely express themselves within their home environment, they usually respond in the affirmative, but with a proviso, such as: ‘You have to understand, I know my daughter loves to bake, but if I were to allow her to work in my kitchen, it would never look the same again- so instead I allow her to play with play-doh whenever she want to.” Or “Don’t worry, I let my son choose his own pajamas, but I wouldn’t dare let him choose his own Shabbos outfit, I don’t want the neighbors talking about me, I could just hear it now, “How in the world could his mother ever let him walk out the front door looking like

36

that?” If this sounds all too familiar, than you should begin to realize just how crucial selfexpression is for your child’s overall development. According to Beth MacDonald, founder of the Macdonald Montessori preschool, “In order for a child to feel safe and secure and develop a healthy sense of self, a child must have ample opportunity to explore their interests, to freely express themselves, and expand their creativity.” Identity formation is one of the eight stages of your child’s overall psychosocial development. Affording your child a variety of opportunities and experiences for self-expression will further enhance their development, and unfortunately, stifling their ability to selfdiscover, will most likely stunt their emotional growth. In addition to the benefits self-expression and exploration can have on a young child’s overall development, parents should bear in mind that creative experiences can help children cope with their feelings. Young children often feel frustrated due to their inability to use language to fully express their thoughts or feelings. By allowing children ample opportunity to freely express themselves, parents can help their children free pent up emotions in a healthy manner thereby preventing possible aggressive outbursts or tantrums. The following are just a few ideas that you can try at home to further expand your child’s opportunities for self-expression. Opportunities for Creativity: Art: Children thrive when they create, experiment, and discover. In order for your child to fully gain from the art experience, make sure that the activity you have prepared focuses on the process, and requires your child to explore, rather than focus on a particular finished product. Steer away from coloring books or art kits that come with premade pieces or specific directions. The most basic supplies are often the best ones

Continued from page 36 for encouraging creativity. Art materials in your home should be abundant and varied. Some of these materials can include: washable paints, washable markers, crayons, paints and paintbrushes, modeling clay, construction paper, glue, colored tissue paper, paper towel tubes, sponges, chalk, paper plates and scrap paper. After each art project, encourage your child to explore his or her creation further by asking questions such as, “Can you tell me about your painting?” Remember, it’s the process of creating art that young children learn from, not the end product. So no matter how tempting, never criticize or judge your child’s artwork. Pretend Play: Pretend play, also known as imaginative or make believe play, is another great way to help kids express themselves. Parents should make sure their children have enough open-ended and engaging materials to play with. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on toys. 38

Everyday household items and old clothes for dress-up are great additions to your children’s pretend play repertoire. It is also important to allow your children to explore various roles that interest them. Whenever possible, try and join in the fun! When parents interact with their children in pretend play scenarios, they get to experience the advantages first hand and help further their child’s growth. Music and Movement: In addition to offering a venue for self-expression, music and movement can also help the development of children in various areas including, language and reasoning skills, fine motor and gross motor skills, cognitive development, as well as social-emotional development. Try to have various kid friendly instruments readily available for your children; such as tambourines, maracas, harmonicas, empty water bottles, spoons made of varied materials and some old pots. In order to further encourage your young children to dance and move to the beats they compose, have fluid scarves, ribbons and soft balls available to them in the area where the musical instruments are stored. Parents are often amazed by the creative, catchy rhythms and dances that their children compose. In conclusion, it’s important for us to acknowledge our children’s emerging sense of self by recognizing their individuality and choices for self-expression. It may be challenging, and at times quite messy, but ask experienced parents and professionals and they will tell you that if you put in the effort you will see tremendous results! Tova Bollag is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working primarily with children and young adults. Her office is located in Woodmere, Long Island. From Soup to Nuts: Kosher Cooking Reimagined! Trying to lose weight? Need to feed a big family? Want to save on your grocery bill? You can do all that at once with The Whole Foods Kosher K i t c h e n , (Skyhorse Publishing), the epic cookbook from kosher gourmet queen L é v a n a Kirschenbaum. Chef Lévana has made a career out of teaching people how to make easy, fast meals with maximum nutritional value. Now you can bring hundreds of her healthiest, most delicious recipes into your own kitchen— and she shows you how to do it on a dime. From homemade dressings, soups, and salads, to fish, meat, vegetarian dishes, breakfast and brunch, pasta, breads, and desserts, the recipes in this lovingly crafted book focus on well-balanced nutrition and the value of each ingredient. Illustrated with gorgeous photography, The Whole Foods Kosher Kitchen is peppered with guidelines and tips for losing weight and keeping it off. Lévana also highlights glutenfree and gluten-adaptable recipes. Here’s a taste of what you’ll find inside: Using fresh herbs If you are too lazy to pluck the rosemary and thyme leaves, or any herbs, off their branches, just do what I do—it will be our little secret: Throw in the whole branches as is and discard them at the end of cooking using a slotted spoon.

ROASTED GARLIC, ARTICHOKE, AND CELERY ROOT SOUP GF, P The elegant and silky soup you will end up with will belie its scant preparation time—all thanks to the perfect pairing of ingredients and the availability of frozen hearts and bottoms. 4 heads garlic 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 quarts (12 cups) water 3 10-ounce boxes frozen artichoke hearts, or 2 1-pound bags artichoke bottoms 1 large head celery root, grated 1/3 cup olive oil 3 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves only 3 sprigs thyme, leaves only Good pinch saffron 1 teaspoon turmeric Salt to taste Ground pepper to taste 1/4 cup chopped chives Preheat the oven to 400°F. Cut off the points of the garlic heads. Rub with the olive oil. Wrap in foil, cut sides down, and roast until browned and soft, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, make the rest of the soup. Bring the water to boil in a wide heavy pot. Add the artichokes, celery root, olive oil, rosemary, thyme, saffron, turmeric, and salt to taste. Bring back to boil, then reduce to medium. Cook covered for 30 minutes. Squeeze the flesh out of the garlic heads into the pot whenever it’s ready and cool enough to handle. Purée the soup with an immersion blender. Add ground pepper to taste and chives. Adjust texture and seasonings. Serve hot. Delicious chilled too. Makes 12 ample servings. Peeling celery Always peel the rounded side of a rib of celery with a vegetable peeler, just as you would a carrot. You will be surprised at

OCTOBER 2013, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

how much more pleasant the celery will be to cook with, especially in recipes where you have to cream a soup, as peeling it rids it of all its fibrous, bitter, tough threads. This step will also make your salads much more palatable and scooping dips and spreads with celery sticks a real treat.

1 small bunch flat-leaf parsley, minced 1 teaspoon turmeric Salt and pepper to taste 1/3 cup pine nuts, toasted (300°F about 12 minutes) 8 snapper or tilapia fillets, about 6 ounces each

MINTED WATERMELON FETA CHEESE SALAD GF, P

Preheat oven to 425°F. Heat the oil in a skillet. Add the onion and saute until translucent. Add the tomato and saute 3 more minutes. Add vinegar, raisins, Sucanat, parsley, turmeric, salt, and pepper and saute 3 more minutes. Place the fish fillets in an ovenproof pan just large enough to hold them. Pour the sauce over them. Bake for 20 minutes. Sprinkle the pine nuts on the fish and serve hot or at room temperature.

Wacky combo? I admit this is quite a stretch from the way watermelon is usually enjoyed: only one small good problem—it’s fabulous, so go for it! You must have noticed as I did that seeded watermelon is much tastier than the “convenient” and bland seedless hybrid. Just spit out the seeds discreetly, OK? 8 cups watermelon, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 3/4 cup crumbled feta cheese 2 cups cherry or grape tomatoes halved 1 cup fresh mint, packed, sliced very thin 6 scallions sliced thin

CHINESE MEAT LOAF GF The easiest and tastiest ever! The meat is extended by several vegetables—so you end up with a leaner and lighter meat loaf—and the potato flakes make it particularly smooth. Children love it! It will be delicious served cold in sandwiches as well as hot. If you decide to use ground turkey, try your best for dark turkey, go a little heavier on the seasonings, and add 2 tablespoons paprika for color.

Dressing: 1/4 cup fresh lemon or lime juice 1/4 cup olive oil salt and pepper to taste (you might need no salt at all) pinch of red pepper flakes Place all salad ingredients on a platter. Whisk the dressing ingredients in a little bowl and pour over the salad. Mix very gently so as not to extract moisture. Makes 8 servings. BAKED SNAPPER WITH RAISINS AND PINE NUTS GF, P Overlaid with wonderful Mediterranean flavors. You might also want to consider another firm and thick type of fish fillets such as bass, salmon, or scrod. 1/4 cup olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 large tomato, diced small 1/4 cup wine vinegar 1/3 cup black or golden raisins 2 tablespoons Sucanat or honey

2 1/2 pounds lean ground beef, bison or turkey 3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 1 cup grated carrots, packed 1 cup natural potato flakes (health food stores) 1 cup coconut milk, light OK 1 bunch cilantro, all tough stems removed, minced bunch scallions, sliced very thin tablespoons grated fresh ginger 2-3 tablespoons chili sauce 2 eggs Preheat the oven to 375°F. Mix all ingredients thoroughly by hand. Pour the mixture into a loaf pan. Bake about 1 hour, or a little longer until the top is just firm to the touch. Makes 8 to 10 servings.

B e a u t y B u l l e t i n - Fall Forecast by: Naomi Scheier

After a month of a hot summer sun and humidity taking its toll on our skin, it’s time to get our skin back into great condition. Free radicals that form in the skin in response to the sun’s UV rays are largely responsible for wrinkles and other signs of aging. To combat these damaging molecules, you have to use a moisturizer with natural anti oxidants such as vitamins C and E. Try Nature’s Dermatology Action C Cream and Action C Serum. The supercharged high potency vitamin C cream will boost the skin’s natural renewal system for a healthy new radiance. The action C serum helps improve the appearance of skin damaged by photoaging and stimulates collagen regeneration. Another great product is Olay Total Effects. It fights seven signs of aging like fine lines, large pores, and age spots brought on by the sun. Also try Neutragena Healthy Skin Anti Wrinkle Cream. It has retinol A that helps reduce fine lines, hyper pigmentation and surface roughness associated with sun exposure. 70

The fall face is bold but natural. Skin is matte, blush is soft, lips are strong and matte, and eyes are natural colors with defined eye liner and long lashes. For that matte flawless finish try Giorgio Armani Beauty Lasting Silk UV Compact Foundation. For a natural healthy glow all over, try Shiseido Makeup Luminizing Satin for color in Tea Rose and Petal over the cheeks, across the nose and around the temples. Eyes should be natural but strong. Try Iayeing Long Wear Cream Shadow in Antique Gold from Bobbi Brown. For strong liner, use Prescriptives Long Wear Kohl Liner in Black Kohl. Let’s not forget our lips. Bold colors in red and pink are in. Try Revlon Color Burst Lipstick in Crimson, Estee Lauder Signature Lipstick in Spanish Red and MAC Amplified Cream Lipstick in Snow Orchid. Always remember, the best face is a happy one! Smile. Have a great fall. Naomi Hair and Make-Up by Naomi Scheier

For Inna Koppel, owner of Studio Inna, fitness is not only about physical strength. It encompasses the entire person on every level. Coaching clients in her unique way, she has helped them overcome major challenges, both physical and emotional, earning her a long list of loyal followers along the way. “If you have a following you have an obligation to direct them not only physically, but spiritually as well”, says Inna. “People shouldn’t get too focused on themselves. Becoming a better person is about a lot more than having a better body. That’s why I choose to have charity events.” On Saturday evening, October 12th, 8:30 pm, Inna is hosting an “All Star Sports Initiative Fitness Extravaganza” to benefit the children of EMUNAH’s Achuzat Sarah Children’s Home in Israel. The event, which will be held at the HAFTR Sports Complex, 33 Washington, Lawrence, is dedicated to Inna’s late mother, Sheila Roit, a”h. It will feature kickboxing, cycling, and yoga for women, and a boot camp for men. It will also feature a sports memorabilia auction. Inna’s relationship with EMUNAH began four years ago when she traveled to Israel with her family to celebrate her son’s Bar Mitzvah with a tour of the country, all arranged by EMUNAH. Yet the highlight of the trip wasn’t a travel destination. It was her visit to EMUNAH’s Achuzat Sarah Children’s Home, catering to some of Israel’s neediest children, most facing enormous psychosocial challenges. A social worker by trade, Inna recognized the outstanding methods of teaching and caring for children employed by the staff at Achuzat Sarah. “What I witnessed at Achuzat Sarah was so inspirational,” says Inna. “They don’t just teach the children the right thing to do, they teach them why to do it. This motivates them to take care of each other.” After that visit, Inna was determined to make a difference to the children she met there. “In a world where everything is moving so

FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY UPCOMING EXHIBITION 7th Ave. and 27th St. NYC 212- 217-4558 RetroSpective - through November 16, 2013 RetroSpective explores fashion’s relationship with its own history. The speed of the fashion cycle is faster than ever, and yet, in the constant drive for newness, the past is often used as a point of reference. Many contemporary designers embrace looking back at fashion history as a fundamental part of the design process. In doing so, they create inventive and modern re-interpretations of everything from crinolines to “flapper” dresses. As cutting-edge designer Yohji Yamamoto once said, “Going to the future means you have to use your past.” Featuring more than 100 garments, accessories, and textiles from the Museum’s permanent collection, RetroSpective begins with a selection of fashions that references historical periods prior to the eighteenth century, including a 1981 gold lamé ensemble by Zandra Rhodes and a 1999 painted silk chiffon gown by Alexander McQueen for Givenchy Couture, both of which draw inspiration from 16thcentury England. The remainder of the exhibition showcases groupings of period fashions and their more recent revivals. Curated by Jennifer Farley, the exhibition also includes work by innovative designers such as Norman Norell, Yves Saint Laurent, Anna Sui, Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga, Walter Van Beirendonck, and artist Cat Chow.

Masago Asian Fusion By: Rachel Rosenberg

A

s the weather gets colder, and I reluctantly say good bye to outdoor seating, fresh summer salads, and frozen cocktails, I turn to my favorite warming comfort foods, which include Chinese takeout (and macaroni cheese balls, of course, but that’s for another day). The Five Towns in Long Island recently welcomed Masago Asian Fusion in the spot formerly occupied by dairy restaurant Sapore, formerly Bistro Grill, all under the same ownership. After sampling Masago’s sizzling Chinese menu coupled with what I would venture to call the best kosher sushi outside of Manhattan, I would bet Masago survives the winter. Masago’s exterior is bright red while inside there are contrasting shiny white plastic booths lining the walls, giving the restaurant a fun retro look. Some patrons were dressed for a night out in full fashion regalia, and others were in casual mode grabbing some Chinese guilty pleasures at the end of a long day. Upon opening, Masago hit some service snafus which have drastically improved with the addition of an attentive and conscientious maître d. The service isn’t perfect, but it is headed in the right direction, with all the staff truly aiming to please. Masago is striving for a higher end Asian dining experience, but my dirty tablecloth indicated otherwise. Some of the waiters could also use reminders that they belong out on the floor watching over their tables rather than disappearing into the kitchen for long periods of time. Thankfully,

92

Masago’s maître-d fills in where the waiters lack, rushing to get customers whatever it is they need. Upon being seated in my favorite location -- a corner booth, I ordered off a plastic menu reminiscent of every Chinese takeout place I’ve been to. However, here is where Masago differs—the sushi. The sushi chef, brought over from a high end NYC restaurant, prepares beautiful and delectable sushi rolls. I tried the galaxy dragon roll which was stuffed with fake crab and topped with seared black pepper tuna and drizzled with spicy mayonnaise. I adored every roll I tried, including the chef’s special roll which strangely had scattered pieces of crunchy rosemary. The ceviche was perfect with fleshy pieces of bass mixed with bright red onions and yellow and red grape tomatoes. After the sushi, it was time to forget the diet because the rest of the menu is classic Chinese. Almost everything is fried and covered with a thick sweet sauce. But like all good Chinese, it was worth it. The shredded crispy beef and shredded crispy chicken are almost identical but both were delicious. Tiny pieces of beef and chicken are thickly coated and fried in a slightly spicy but savory sauce. There was hardly any way to differentiate in taste between the chicken and the beef, but they were still enjoyable the following night at home when I opened my little white box of leftovers. The chicken wings were fresh, piping hot and also covered in a thick sauce. The spring rolls were small and a tad too oily, but tasty. For the entrées, the beef teriyaki was smoking hot and sizzled on a cast iron plate filled with Chinese vegetables and onions. While the dish was flavorful, I couldn’t eat more than a few bites due to its heaviness (or maybe due to the many heavy dishes I tried). The Thai steak was tough, overcooked and tasteless and not worth bringing home as leftovers. The Paradise chicken was a little lighter and sautéed with the same Chinese vegetables and onions as the beef teriyaki.

Continued from page 92 The sauce was sweet but not cloyingly so. Frankly, if you’re heading out for Chinese, I say go for the grease and have the shredded beef and Tsao chicken. But for those want to keep it light, there are lighter fish options. I tried the black pepper tuna entrée, which was only lightly seared at the edges, and it was excellent. While traditionally Chinese restaurants don’t serve dessert and leave you only with a chopped orange and a fortune cookie, Masago is not typical, and is Asian “Fusion” so they have a full dessert menu, no fortune cookie. The truffle dome was a single piece of thick soft chocolate with a creamy center and looked great with a candle stuck in the center as the waiters serenaded birthday diners. The ice cream sundae was nothing spectacular with three scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream but it made my kids happy, which is all that counts. Five Towns’ restaurants don’t seem to succeed as well as Brooklyn and Manhattan kosher restaurants, so I am glad to welcome new and different cuisines to the neighborhood. Masago is a great option for locals and also worth the drive from Brooklyn and Manhattan. My rating: 3 stars ★★★★★✩ Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. GRIN AND BARE IT What fashion article do you never wear yourself but admire on others? Heels. I think most outfits look better with heels and most women look slimmer and more put-together when they were even a medium heel but, unfortunately, I have back issues and have to stick to flats. P.M. Hanging earrings. I love the way they look on most people but every time I try a pair on I think I look ridiculous and I take them off. A.M. Shaitels!

L.M.

Accessories! I love them! I want to wear lots of themscarves, bangles, big necklaces, big earrings, but I always feel silly when I put them on so they stay in the closet. E.F. Color. Some women wear color with such confidence and panache but I am most comfortable in basic black. Every once in a while when I spot someone wearing a great outfit in a striking solid or a bold print I decide to try it myself but invariably return my purchase to the store unworn. L.B. Fun everyday hats! They look terrible on me but they’re really cute. D.S.

Sky-high heels.

B.D.

I’m not good with accessories. Especially the popular scarves that look so casual on everyone; almost an afterthought. On me they look contrived and out of place. S.F. Headbands, spike heels, maxi dresses (I’m too short). B.H. Belts - for obvious reasons. I figured you need to have a waist to wear belts. T.D. I love a great leopard skin pump or belt accessorizing a classic look. I don’t however own

Scarves. Somehow I can never get it right whenever I try to accessorize with one. H.R. I wouldn’t say never but very rarely. I love the way people accessorize with scarves and belts. I wish I could do it as well. S.U. I could never wear a peplum. I don’t have a waist and my legs are long. The peplum style is not a very good look for my body type. But it still doesn’t stop me from trying it on from time to time to time! D.W.

Scarves to complement an outfit. I’ve tried… can’t seem to pull it off. T.B Accessories, including jewelry, pocketbooks & scarves. Somehow others can pull it all together but I never get it quite right. I end up wearing the same jewelry & using the same bag year round. And scarves... I don't even pretend to try!! E.D. Heels. I love the way they complete a look, but have come to the realization that safeguarding my back is more important than being a fashion plate. So TOMS it is. At all times. Oh well. S.R. .

Continued from page 20 loop thing myself and have never gotten it right. Oh, I might leave the house thinking I was looking pretty hip but one glance in a storefront window and I knew I had missed the mark. How do they do it? A couple of weeks ago I was doing some closet weeding and discovered a light blue pleated skirt I hadn’t worn in years. I tried it on and was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit. I found a top that paired well with it but then noticed six belt loops that I hadn’t remembered the skirt sported. I am not such a belt person but did have a few options at my reach. None, however, fit through the narrow loops. It looked sloppy to leave the loops beltless so I figured the whole outfit had to go. And then suddenly I had an inspiration. I dug into my accessory drawer and found a thin, chiffon, head scarf in shades of blue and teal that fit easily through the loops with even a few inches left to tie and hang. I was very pleased with my creativity and, actually, with how it looked. I ran around that morning doing errands, occasionally spotted myself in a car reflection and remained pretty pleased until I met up with my daughter in the afternoon. She took one look at me and asked “Is that my headband on your skirt?” Instant deflation. She saw my expression and quickly addeed “No, it looks cute.” But the damage was done. I could not wait to get home and pull out the the scarf and off the skirt. Just not my forte, I guess. I’ll stick to earrings. It is finally beginning to feel like fall around here and with the change in weather comes a change in our wardrobes. Our pages are filled with fabulous fall options for each member of your family - from every day to special occasion wear. You’ll find everything you are looking for in this Fall Fashion issue including the latest in exciting accessories. Perhaps this season you’ll even be sporting a sensational scarf. Good luck!
