There is a large and well-known chain of women’s clothing stores that is going out of business. At this writing they are counting down their final days with unprecedented sales. I have been flooded by emails over the past few weeks and in each subsequent correspondence the percentage off is larger, the print bolder. By the time you hold this issue in your hands the doors at all this chain’s locations will probably have closed for the last time. For many, it is the sad end of a particular era. This women’s wear site was a very popular shop decades ago when I was a high-school graduate living in Brooklyn. I would say it was the place to shop for chic fashions at discounted prices. Two bus rides were necessary to get there from my Boro Park home ground and many of my friends and their moms took those

rides frequently. Almost thirty years later, in my Long Island neighborhood, another branch of the store not far from my block, is also a wellvisited spot. Whenever postcards or emails arrive with news of holiday sales and special promotions, my friends here, too, excitedly flock there. Never a big shopper, I was not a frequent visitor at the Brooklyn branch nor at the one in the Five Towns. So the news of the chain’s closing and the huge sales being offered did not affect me. I can’t say the same for several of my friends. I find it amusing that some people are downright depressed over the closings. One pal told me she feels so lost. I guess if you’ve been happily outfitting yourself from one source all your adult life it could be distressing and even

Continued from page 10 disorienting to suddenly have to turn elsewhere. As odd as it might be, I never got a kick out of shopping - especially for myself. I never developed a special bond with a particular store or cultivated a close relationship with the store’s owner or manager. No boutique has ever put items aside for me, knowing my shopping style and taste and I have certainly never received a personal call telling me something I would love just arrived, that it “had my name on it”. However, things did change a bit when I had

my first grandchild. Suddenly I found I didn’t mind shopping. I am sure the fact that I didn’t have to try anything on was a big part of it. Everything was so small and so cute and what joy seeing my grandchild wearing something I had picked out. As a few more little ones came onto the scene, B”H, I began shopping a little more frequently until, okay I admit it, I, too, have become a shopoholic, albeit just for little sizes.

Continued from page 12 While everyone was lamenting the closing of the women’s fashions chain and running to nab some last minute markdowns, I have been a little frantic myself trying to take advantage of all the end-of-season pint-size savings around. One fine shop in particular, which is normally a little pricey for my budget, has wonderful children’s outerwear. Their sale starts low and slow but eventually gets to a whopping 70% off. Of course if you wait until

the collections are at the greatest reductions, chances are you will not find all - or any - of the sizes you need. There is a delicate dance one must practice here. Shop early on for greater options but a smaller discount? Wait until the sale is even bigger and hope the selection will still be satisfying? Make a mad dash in the day the prices are slashed to the lowest and just grab, praying something you bring home on this final sale will fit someone?

Elegance in an Age of Crisis: Fashions of the 1930s The Museum at FIT 7th Ave. at 27th St. New York, NY 10003 Special Exhibitions Gallery February 7, 2013 – April 19, 2014 Many view the 1930s – a decade that emerged from the Jazz Age and ended with the onset of World War II – as the period in which truly modern clothing was created. As the rise of classicism became a dominant force in art and design, a balanced and well-proportioned body became the fashion ideal. The structure and rigidity of the Edwardian era and Perugia pumps, green suede, gold metallic the shapeless styles of painted leather, c. 1930, France. Gift of Frank Smith Collection, 2008.84.5. the 1920s were replaced by fashions that enhanced the human form without restricting it. Born of innovation and traditional craftsmanship, the phenomenon of modern and elegant dressing occurred in the realms of both women’s high fashion and men’s bespoke tailoring, as well as their respective accessories. Although the 1930s is not a new topic to fashion historians and curators, past exhibitions were high glamour presentations, but they overlooked the richness of menswear. They also overlooked the global impact of fashions created outside of Paris, the epicenter of haute couture. Elegance in an Age of Crisis is the first exhibition to House (founder: Gennaro Rubinacci, feature a balanced London tailor: Vincenzo Attolini) classic Neopolitan jacket, silk thussor, 1930s, Italy. high fashion and menswear. The perspective is global: the objects herein come from Paris and London (capitals of haute couture and bespoke tailoring respectively), as well as cities such as Naples, New York, Los Angeles, Havana, and Shanghai. It is a compelling irony that the elegant and progressive qualities of 1930s fashions emerged during one of the most tumultuous periods of modern western history. Set between the stock market crash in 1929 and the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939, this decade was a startling paradox, as the title of this exhibition suggests. From 1914 to 1945, the world was embroiled in two horrific world wars, with a soul-searing, catastrophic economic depression separating them. Yet despite these crises—or maybe in reaction to them—culture during the Great Depression was not only elegant, but also buoyant, effervescent, and escapist. Along with the classical revival, influences that led to a new, modern style of clothing were advances in textile technology and a strong reliance on craftsmanship. Inspired by the bourgeoning, streamlined aesthetic and enriched by the growth of softer Anderson & Sheppard suit, 1935, London. Collection of Steven Hitchcock. materials, innovative tailors and dressmakers began to construct clothing without padding and boning. By draping soft crepes on the bias (or oblique angle), Madeline Vionnet, one of the greatest dressmakers of the twentieth century, inspired a cadre of couturiers who revolutionized fashion and literally built the languid styles of the age. For menswear Gennaro Rubinacci and his master tailor, Vincenzo Attolini, literally “deconstructed” the suit and created a garment as supple as a shirt, while in London, Frederick Scholte softened British tailoring with the creation of the London Lounge style as he pioneered the celebrated drape cut. Also highlighted in the exhibition are a range

Tweed, no longer only for certain sports, became a ubiquitous material for menswear. The spectrum of outfits for activities such as skiing, golf, and swimwear expanded, mirroring the growth in technology that made sports clothes lighter and more functional. Lingerie and at-home ensembles mirrored the

decade’s evening gowns and suits, and resort dressing designed specifically for warm weather environments grew in significance. Objects featured in the exhibition epitomize the streamlined aesthetics of this golden age of fashion. From neckline to hemline and every nuanced detail in between, Elegance in an Age of Crisis pays homage to the great men and women, craftspeople and clients alike, who created styles that live on to this day as the ideal of beauty and modernity.

The scene is all too familiar. My eleven year old daughter wails, “Mooooommy, I have nothing to wear.” “Honey,” I tell her calmly, though if she looked closely enough she would see the steam coming out of my ears, “you have a closet full of clothing. Your drawers are busting. Surely you have something to wear!” “No Mommy, I don’t. I don’t wear any of these things.” The truth is I do the exact the same thing. We’ve all been there, a half hour before a shul Kiddush, clothing and shoes piled so high on your bed one of your children asks if he can slide down. When you arrive twenty minutes late and 10 outfits later you explain to your husband or friends, “I have nothing to wear.” My husband tells me, “Jen, you have a closet full of clothing. Your drawers are busting. Surely you have something to wear!” Hmmmmm, I knew I heard that line somewhere before. And then comes the dreaded advice - like nails on a chalk board. “You should just get rid of what you don’t wear anymore so you’ll see what you really have.” I know that for many people sorting through what they no longer wear creates a rush. Some women feel more alive as they toss their old threads and get organized. And yet for others the idea of going through the old closet creates a sense of dread, sadness or loss. So why do some of us feel the strong emotional urgency to hold on to articles of clothing we no longer wear? Perhaps we are trying to hold on to something from the past that no longer is. How many of us hang on to sweaters from high school, or the size two dress from the time you lost all that weight? How many of us keep our larger size clothing “just in case I gain back the weight?” Yes, we know we haven’t worn that 80s skirt since the 80s, but what if it comes back in style? Then what? Or, if we get rid of everything in the closet

LE MARAIS By: Rachel Rosenberg

W

hile Spring is around the corner and with it new beginnings, this month I was persuaded to write about an “oldie but goodie,” Le Marais. No, there is no lack of new kosher restaurants popping up in the New York area. However, this year, for the first time, and likely the last, New York and New Jersey hosted the Super Bowl. Times Square became Super Bowl Boulevard and throngs of football fans, tourists, and New Yorkers came to slide down the 180 foot long toboggan, take a picture of themselves as a Bronco or Seahawk, catch a glimpse of the Vince Lombardi trophy and kick a field goal down Broadway. After participating in the pre-game fun, we couldn’t go home without sitting down for the best steak and fries in NYC at Le Marais on 46th between 6th and 7th Avenue. Le Marais has been serving its classic French steaks for well over 15 years. The restaurant sports dark wood paneling, white paper covered dining tables and if you’re lucky, a luxurious leather arm chair. Here’s the great thing about dining at Le Marais. It never disappoints. There are busier nights (pre-Super Bowl) when we are frustrated with the wait for a table, but once seated it doesn’t take long to order our favorite Le Marais classics. The service is always stellar, with food and drink arriving within minutes of ordering. This is ideal when you are having a quick dinner before a show. I always start with an appetizer sized steak tartare. It is on the menu as an entree but I prefer my main dish cooked. The tartare is a

94

heaping plate of finely chopped raw beef mixed with seasonings and capers and topped with a handful of chopped onions. Here’s how to eat Le Marais’ tartare: Start with a slice of the warm baguette the waiter brought to the table when you sat down (if you’ve finished them already, ask for more, you’ll need it); spread a thin layer of margarine and add a spoonful of tartare and then prepare for food bliss. The crunchy bread with the silky smooth meat is the ideal combination. There are other decent appetizers at Le Marais but I would skip the frisee salad with duck confit. The duck is often dry and difficult to eat as it is served on the bone. The lamb chili is a great spicy Morrocan-style dish. Le Marais is one restaurant where I would make sure to save my appetite for the entree. Le Marais has its own butcher shop in the front of the restaurant and carries prime aged beef which is cooked to order on its menu. The favorite is the “La Surprise” or the butcher’s cut. The steak is juicy, sliced perfectly, pink in the center and full of flavor. While it isn’t necessary, I like to dip my steak in the house béarnaise or shallot sauce. If the Surprise isn’t available, the “Onglet” or hanger steak is also a juicy selection packed with flavor. All of Le Marais’ steaks are served with their famous “frites” or fries. You can ask for a side of salad instead, but why bother? The fries are thin and crispy and taste great when dipped in your steak sauces. As I know this issue of ESRA is a Spring edition, I figured I’d let everyone else enjoy the classic steaks while I tried something new. The “Magret de Canard au Poivre” or peppered duck breast turned out to be a fabulously fresh alternative. The duck was succulent and pink and heavily crusted with black pepper. It was covered with a savory sauce and shitake mushrooms. It left all the steak eaters at my table picking off my plate. While not always listed on the menu, ask for a side of green beans. The green beans are

If you can manage dessert after a dinner of steak and frites, try my favorite, the warm chocolate cake. Its richness together with the cold vanilla ice cream is a perfect note to end a spectacular meal. The dome of peanut butter mouse and the apple tart are also excellent sweet endings to 96

a great steak dinner. There’s a reason Le Marais is still around and still packed with business men, tourists and theater goers, whether they keep kosher or not. My rating: 41⁄2 stars ★★★★★ Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. She lives in Woodmere with her husband and three sons.

From Soup to Nuts: Quick and Healthy When we talk about what’s fashionable food-wise, low fat cooking is always in style. In Quick and Healthy: Low-Fat Cooking, by Preventions Food Editor Jean Rodgers (Rodale Press), over 200 recipes inspired by cuisines from the Mediterranean, built on the world’s healthiest foods, are all the rage. Take a peek. MARINATED MUSHROOM BROCHETTES SERVES

4

Mushrooms have a meaty taste and texture, which makes them quite satisfying as an appetizer or hors d'oeuvre. In this recipe, they pick up rich flavor from the marinade ingredients. Threading the mushrooms onto skewers through their sides allows them to sit flat on the broiler rack so they cook evenly. To make turning them easier, you might want to use two skewers, parallel to each other, for each brochette. If you're cooking outdoors, you can also do these brochettes on the grill. 1 pound large mushrooms, stems removed 2 tablespoons ketchup 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce 2 cloves garlic, minced Blanch the mushrooms in boiling water for about 3 minutes. Drain and pat dry. In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and garlic. Add the mushrooms and toss well to coat. Let marinate for at least 30 minutes. Thread the mushrooms through their sides onto thin, flat skewers. Set them on a broiler rack. Broil 5” from the heat for about 4 minutes per side. Preparation time: 5 minutes plus marinating time Cooking time: 10 minutes

SPICY TOMATO AND PEPPER SOUP SERVES

4

Serve this piquant soup with cornbread or a rustic Italian bread such as focaccia. Most of the sodium in this soup comes from the stock. If you need to reduce your sodium consumption, look for a brand that's low in sodium. 1 large onion, minced 2 cups finely chopped sweet red or yellow peppers 1 clove garlic, minced 2 teaspoons oil 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 4 cups defatted chicken stock 2 cups diced tomatoes In a 3-quart saucepan over medium heat, saute the onions, peppers and garlic in the oil for 5 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the chili powder, oregano, red pepper and black pepper. Saute for 1 minute. Add the stock and tomatoes. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Transfer about half of the soup to a blender and puree; pour back into the pan. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes GRILLED SALMON WITH CUCUMBER RELISH SERVES 4 This salmon recipe with Mediterranean overtones was created by Seattle Chef Caprial Pence. Serve the fish with pasta or rice. 1/2 cup diced red onions 1/2 cup white wine vinegar

Serve this chicken the way they do at the Doral Saturnia International Spa Resort in Miami—over rice or noodles. Or turn the cooked chicken into a summer salad by chilling it and serving it over mixed greens. 1 cup raspberry vinegar 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons minced fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme Pinch of ground black pepper 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves In a shallow glass baking dish, mix the vinegar, mustard, soy sauce, honey, basil, thyme and pepper. Add the chicken and turn to coat all sides. Allow to marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a grill or broiling rack; reserve the marinade and place in a 1quart saucepan. Grill or broil the chicken for 5 minutes per side, or until cooked through. While the chicken is cooking, boil the marinade until reduced by half. To serve, pour the marinade over the chicken. Preparation time: 5 minutes plus marinating time Cooking time: 10 minutes

GRIN AND BARE IT How do you think children’s fashions today compare to those when you were a kid? Kids’ fashions today are “cool”. Kids look like mini grown ups but it looks quite adorable. Our fashions in our days made us look like total nerds! But we were also oblivious!!! Maybe it was better. L.M. FASHION?! I was just glad I didn’t have to wear my weekday clothes for Shabbos. Things were so very, very simple back then....and who could afford what the kids wear today? There were barely any frum stores to shop at so the mothers made do with department stores of that time. Sorry to say they all don’t exist anymore. D.W. I’m not a fan of kids’ styles that could pass for young adult fashions. While I’m finally accepting that the smocked dresses of yore won’t pass muster with my granddaughters, I wish they’d skip the fitted, pull-on pencil skirts and graphic tees that have become their go-to wardrobe staples. M.S. Today kids are dressing like mini grownups. The clothing is sophisticated and sometimes provocative. You even see lots of black. In my days it was bows, smocking and froo froo. B.H. I wasn’t allowed to wear black (stockings or dresses) untill I was married!!!!! B.K. They’re much cooler today. When my kids look at old pictures of themselves when they were young, they inevitably say, “Mommmy, what were you thinking? How could you dress me in that?” T.B. I much prefer the formal, innocent fashions of my childhood. Except for one thing. All my outfits, old-

Continued from page 118 fashioned and simple as they were, stopped at the top of my thighs. What was that about??? R.D. Exclusive Children’s Clothing

Stroll Into… Judy’s Nook

Kids’ clothing today is way cooler than what I wore when I was a kid. Also sizes run smaller so a kid who loves plattentorte might have some trouble fitting in to the popular styles. L.E. Today, there is no difference between kids’ and parents’ fashion; unfortunately, it helps to blur the lines for inappropriate and appropriate behaviors for both. B.D. Considering the fact that it’s been half a century since I was a little kid (sheesh), children’s fashion has evolved considerably. The clothing is now so stylish and appealing and there’s so much to choose from. Shopping for my grandchildren is a great yet costly pleasure. D.R. I would say for little girls fashion has changed plenty. Fashions are too mature, clingy, often tasteless now. On the other hand, fashions for boys were creepy then and are still pretty creepy now. Oh well. A.M. When I was a kid, we looked like kids. The children’s fashions were just that - for children. Now the kids may look adorable, but they are dressed like mini high school kids from the time they are babies. C.J. I long for the classy days of little girls wearing “spring coats” with “matching hats” and “white cotton gloves”. B.G. Much nicer!!

Fabrics have changed. You can’t find down jackets easily. In fact babies don’t fit into cars seats with a snowsuit! Not much in wool or warm materials. Somehow children’s fashion tends to mimic the adult fashion trends! L.B.

we don’t wear, there will be five things hanging and that would be so depressing. What if I never get around to replacing the clothing? Think of a divorcee who keeps her wedding dress hanging in her closet. Every morning she opens the closet door to get dressed and there it is. A reminder of what no longer is. Perhaps she was happy in the marriage and the divorce came as a shock. Perhaps she was miserable in the marriage and tried her hardest to save it, but it could not be saved. As long as she keeps that dress in her closet she does not have to accept the reality that the marriage is over. Incredible how an article of clothing can serve as such a powerful symbol when it is no longer relevant in your life. The reason cleaning out the closet becomes emotional or overwhelming is because we are forced to deal with some reality we have been avoiding. The overstuffed drawers create some illusion for us that we are comfortable living in. Whether you are holding on to a skirt from a happier time in your life or a blouse that fit you ten years ago, those are not realities any longer. The longer we stay in what no longer is, the farther away we are from living an authentic life. So, here is the fashion challenge for Spring 2014 by yours truly. I challenge you to open your closet and pull something out you haven’t worn in years. Look at it. Take the item to a mirror and hold it up on yourself. What are you thinking? What emotion is being stirred? Are you brought back to a simpler time and yearning for it? Are you upset or angry that you’ve gained those last 20 pounds so this article of clothing no longer fits? Whatever the emotion is, it is crucial that you begin to process it. Do not run away from it and shove the clothing right back in the closet. We shove clothing that we no longer wear in our closet the same way we shove our emotions right back from where they came. Holding on to old baggage creates stress and tension that is damaging, both spiritually and physically. It is when we start to deal with the emotion that we can begin to clean out our closet and lighten the emotional clutter in our hearts. Wishing everyone a cleansed and refreshed Spring 2014. And remember, it is when the caterpillar sheds its cocoon that it becomes a butterfly. Sincerely, Jennifer

They are much improved. More sophisticated. You can practically get anything for a child that you can get for an adult. The designers have gotten into the kids space and, since kids are so competitive, this seems to be a goldmine for the designers. D.H. While many of the children’s fashions of yesteryear were quite ugly, the more contemporary and updated looks of today come with a lack of modesty and appropriateness - same problem with the maternity-wear. Why can’t the styles be chic and tasteful? B.S. I think there’s a lot more variety and imagination in them.... The fabrics are easy care.... But I also feel there is a lot of inappropriate clothing, especially for little girls… B.C. When I was young, and when my children were young, kids’ clothing were made so that they looked like children’s clothing. Nowadays they make adult clothing in children’s sizes. I think it was so much cuter back then. Let kids be kids!

Continued from page 22 I like to buy coats and jackets for my grandchildren to put away for the next year. I find there is usually no big risk with fit when it comes to a coat and it is always such a nice surprise when the weather turns cold again and I pull out new outerwear for the kids. So when my favorite shop put their first sale signs up in the storefront window I was on a mission. My first goal was to find a jacket for my oneyear-old grandson. As, meanwhile, the only male grandchild, he has no wardrobe source and really needs everything new. When the sale started I waited a bit and then purchased a warm and snugly navy jacket for him for next year. Soon after I realized that my oldest grandchild could probably use a coat for next year as well. She, too, was not getting hand-medowns from anyone. I was delighted, when I again visited the shop, to see that the markdowns had continued and that I was able to find her a fabulous option for next winter as well. I was thrilled with my purchases and pretty much done when it occurred to me that my

MARCH 2014, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

youngest granddaughter really wouldn’t have anything for next winter either. While it is true that there were many bigger-sized clothing from her cousins out there, they were all six thousand miles away. Who knows if and when they would make it back to New York shores? I wasn’t sure what I would find now that the sale had been going on for a while and the discounts were even greater but I headed back to my haunt and, my luck, there were still some adorable options in small, female sizes. Kaching! I brought the matching shopping bags upstairs to my storage closet and put them away. Several days later, talking to my daughter overseas, I told her about my successful shopping sprees. She was very grateful for all the gifts but while conversing I suddenly felt a pang of regret. I had left out one grandchild when making my purchases. Not accidentally. It was the granddaughter who has a big sister and always had tubs of her older sibling’s clothing passed on to her. But even if she didn’t really need it, how could I buy everyone else a special coat for the new season and not her? My daughter told me it wasn’t necessary, that she would have what to wear. I felt terrible. Needless to say the following day, when the sale had reached its final 70% off, I raced to the store. The racks and shelves were sparingly populated. The pickings were slim. I took one look around and was quite dismayed and very upset at myself. And then I spotted it. A charming navy quilted coat with gray trim. It was on the counter next to the cashier. “Does this belong to anyone?” I asked. She looked surprised to see it there. “Someone must have just left it. I guess not,” she answered. I checked the tag and, miraculously, it was the size I needed. So of course I bought that coat too. I guess I have no right mocking my friends who are mourning the loss of their favorite fashion source as I, too, have become a little obsessed. Well, one store is closing and the sales are ending. But not to worry. Our March SPRING FASHION issue has arrived with all the latest in women’s, men’s and children’s wear. Turn our pages and discover new looks, new collections, new shops, new opportunities. Let the shopping begin!
