Summer Practice # (845) 434-1743

I am definitely a night person, although maybe not as much as I used to be. I have been known to start cooking for weekend company late after work on Thursday and not hit the sack until every pot had cooled and could be refrigerated usually near 4 am Friday morning. I have, at times, cornered myself into a deadline where I had no choice but to pull an all-nighter to get the promised work done and had literally gone out the next morning without ever having rested head to pillow. Up to a point I function pretty well late into the night. Up until a point. And although I go to sleep late I do not sleep late. I have never been one to luxuriate in bed until all hours of the morning. Even 12

when on vacation or when the children were out and the house was quite with no obligations tugging on my brain, I could not seem to sleep more than half a dozen hours at most. I have friends who love nothing more than to crawl back into bed when possible, often after waking the kids and sending them off to school. It is a great treat for them. Alas, not for me. Even when sick I have never had the ability to get back into bed once arisen. My loss, I’m sure. I may go to sleep on the late side and I may not linger in bed in the morning but there are a few hours of sleep I do require and lately I have not gotten even those. Over the last few months two things Continued on page 109

MIND OVER MATTER: Back to School; Back to Ourselves By: Jennifer Mann, LMSW

This is confirmed by the teacher. As a matter of fact the child is well liked by his classmates. He tells his mother adamantly that he is not interested in a Shabbos playdate. He would much rather read, chat with his parents and putter around the house. He is a happy and content child. Meanwhile, mom is worried. She thinks to herself that this cannot be normal. How can a child not have plans Shabbos afternoon? Everyone else is busy on Shabbos with friends. Surely solid friendships are forming and he will be left out of these precious memories, with none of his own. So mother, from a place of love, drives her son to make plans. Another fairly common illustration is a parent who puts a lot of emphasis on her daughter’s appearance. Her bow must match her socks, hair perfectly in place. She must be perfectly coiffed and poised at all times. Or a father who insists his son play sports though he is not interested. In all of the aforementioned examples, there is something driving the parents’ proclivity to help their children. It is important that we are able to decipher whether our inclination is about our children or ourselves. As in the first example, perhaps this mother didn’t have a world of friends as a child, or perhaps she had no friends at all. Or, perhaps she had a world of friends because her mother sent the message that she must be busy with friends on Shabbos. We must identify what is motivating our behaviors and desires for our children. If not, we continue the cycle of whatever we were trying to avoid in the first place. If we were to pause and ask ourselves as parents, “what is really going on?” “Is the Shabbos playdate about the well adjusted son who prefers to spend Shabbos afternoon reading and with family or is it about the mother’s issues that she brings to the table? Perhaps the father who insists his son play sports is recreating a dynamic from his own childhood in which his father forced him to play sports. Or perhaps his father never took an interest in his attentiveness to sports.

It’s that time of year again. Those endless summer nights are coming to an official end. Gone are the long afternoons spent by the pool or lounging in the backyard. Before we know it, we will shut off our air conditioning, open the windows for that autumn breeze and then, in a blink, will come that time when we can no longer deny that the heat must be turned on! For parents and children alike the end of summer is synonymous with the return of school. Some dread it, some are counting down the seconds to send the children back. Though as parents we may have conflicting feelings on the matter, I believe there is one thing most of us have in common and it is that universal denominator that I would like to address in this column. We parents have a tendency to project our own fears, insecurities, issues, and even past history onto our children. When I was in high school a pregnant teacher told the class that if her baby was to be a girl, she could not name the baby “Elisheva.” She explained that when she was in middle school a classmate named Elisheva teased her mercilessly. She hated Elisheva so much that to that day, perhaps twenty years later, the name Elisheva, the thought of Elisheva, conjured up bad memories and the tumult of her early adolescent years. I could not understand it at the time, but the story has stuck with me until this day. A parent’s projection of his or her issues can manifest itself in infinite ways. For example, a child is not interested in a Shabbos playdate. He tells his mother everything is fine, he has friends at school. 38 SUMMER 2014, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

BRASSERIE HALEVI By: Rachel Rosenberg

T

tartar was mixed with mango, peppers and grapefruit which gave it an interesting flavor and a colorful plate. The duck dumplings were silky, thin dumpling dough filled with ground duck floating in a bowl of beef consommé. The broth was very salty and I could only eat a few spoonfuls but the duck dumplings were delicate and delicious. The wild mushroom risotto was creamy and savory with small crispy wild mushrooms decorating the side of the plate. The entrees I tried were a bit strange and did not work for me. The short rib ravioli fell apart before I could take a bite. The short ribs were heavy and I could not finish my dish even after offering a taste to my fellow diners. It was served with diced vegetables and bright green beans. The lamb ragout looked like it was dumped on the plate without any thought to presentation. It was also quite heavy and served with the same diced vegetables and green beans. I did notice the lamb ragout and short rib ravioli were not on the original Brasserie menu so hopefully these experiments will be shelved. The crispy skin salmon served with mashed potatoes and broccolini was fantastic. I don’t usually like to order fish in a steakhouse, especially a French steakhouse, but my health conscious friends chose the dish and it turned out to be the best entree I tried. For dessert I tried the chocolate mousse which was nothing special, but I enjoyed it, as, what could be bad about chocolate mousse? The blueberry tart, however, was incredible. Its thin tart crust was covered with globs of Belgian custard topped with fresh blueberries. There wasn’t a crumb left on the plate. The Brasserie has a full bar with some unique beers on draft. It’s great to have a local option that’s not teaming with screaming children.

o say my days are hectic as we gear up for back to school would be a major understatement. At the end of a Sunday filled with shopping for school supplies, uniforms, new sneakers, and coats, I don’t have the energy to travel to Manhattan for a quiet and elegant dinner. Although that is exactly what I need after one of “those” days. Unlike Brooklyn, the 5 Towns does not have a large selection of upscale kosher restaurants. While I was sorry to see Off the Grill close, in its place Central Avenue in Cedarhurst has gained a fabulous replacement with Brasserie Halevi. Don’t judge this restaurant by its name, which I abhor. You can judge Brasserie by its decor and ambiance. The space is large with high ceilings and offers dining on multiple levels. The overall look is elegant yet modern with white couch seating along the walls, large crystal chandeliers, and a fully stocked, mirrored bar. Either due to the fact that Brasserie is new to the neighborhood or its size, there is no wait for a table, even without a reservation. I have tried Brasserie twice, and both times the service was wonderful. Our waiter promptly delivered menus and inquired as to our drink selection while a bus boy delivered warm, soft garlic rolls with olive oil. The menu is French-inspired with a twist. The options seem to have changed slightly My rating: 3 stars ★★★ within the first few weeks of opening so Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney, is known perhaps the chef is still experimenting. amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and The crispy sweetbread appetizer was daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. She perfectly complemented by sautéed red lives in Woodmere with her husband and three sons. E cabbage flavored with cinnamon. The tuna 50 SUMMER 2014, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

Computers One on One Setting Screen Limits

by Shuly Rubel

Back to school is a challenging time in most households. Parents seek to prepare their children for the new school year with the right tools to begin the season successfully. My grandson is starting second grade this coming fall. Although he is an avid reader and spends much quality time with appropriate books, he also loves to play games on his Leapfrog, use apps on his Ipad and watches select Disney shows on his computer. Educational technology can be a great tool for your children’s growth but parents need to find the right balance of screen times. Not all screens are created equal. Parents must determine just how much screen time is too much -- and what’s just right for their own kids. Children can spend many hours of their day with various media, and balancing media usage is an essential part of the parenting plan. When it comes to screen time, both quality and quantity matter. Let’s face it, most of our children are growing up in front of screens. From smartphones to gaming devices to the computer, our kids seem mesmerized by them. According to a Kaiser Foundation study, some kids as young as eight years old are spending up to 7.5 hours per day consuming media. This is not surprising. video games, Facebook, the internet, and even TV -- they all seem so much more interesting than, say, doing homework. But studies have shown that all of this screen time can impact everything from kids’ health to their school readiness. The solution isn’t as simple as turning everything off. There’s a huge difference between an hour spent shooting zombies in a game and the same amount of time spent learning vocabulary from an Ipad app or

64

composing music online. This is where quality matters. And while more research is needed to fully understand the effects of all media on our children’s brains, it’s a good practice to pay attention to both quality and quantity. In today’s 24/7 digital world, learning to balance media usage has become an essential part of growing up. Just as children must be taught about nutrition and how to eat a balanced diet, so too they must learn how to manage their media diets. While it helps to start when your kids are young, it’s never too late to teach them how to recognize when enough is enough. As parents, we need to guide our children toward activities that help them learn, stimulate their interests, and express their creativity. We should encourage outdoor activity, reading and old-fashioned board games played with family and friends. When they do spend time with media, we need to be able to separate the mindful from the mindless. Following these simple steps will help you and your kids manage -- and even optimize -screen time: Set an example. Do you check your smartphone in restaurants, keep the TV on during dinner, or check your email constantly? It’ll be harder to teach your kids how to balance media usage if they don’t see you doing the same. Set limits. Parents can help kids develop self-control by working with them to create a schedule that incorporates all of the things they need to do in a day. Make sure that homework, hobbies, chores and outdoor activities come first. Encourage playing positive learning games. You may also want to schedule in some downtime. Childhood development experts say it’s good for kids to be idle -– and maybe even bored at times. Those moments allow for introspection and the development of selfawareness. Get involved. Make sure you know what your kids are doing, watching and playing. Take the time to sit down and play their favorite game with them or look at their latest digital creation. Always be aware of what they

FALL / WINTER 2014

OHR SARAH

INFANTS TO SIZE 12 1156 45TH STREET BROOKLYN NY 11219 T 718.853.3210

TF 1.888.LEBAMBINI

Well ladies…congratulations to all of you who recently completed her year of Seminary, whether here or in Eretz Yisroel….now what? Where do we all go from here? How do we do life, what does HKB”H want from us…and how do we get it right?! With that volley, Mrs. Chanie Juravel, noted therapist and lecturer from New Hempstead, New York, inaugurated the first shiur of the newly established OHR SARAH lecture series. The girls have been getting such a wonderful education since preschool days, it doesn’t have to stop just because they have completed one year of seminary. There is so much to learn and so much room for growth and sophisticated development in their avodas Hashem. Think about it! Do the boys stop advancing once they reach first year Bais Medrash? Of course there is a huge difference in the roles our girls play versus the boys, but that doesn’t mean that all spiritual growth has to come to a screeching halt as the landing gear of the planes touch down at JFK. As Chazal tell us, there are things that always need chizuk, strengthening. Divrei Torah always need freshness and encouragement, likewise the yetzer tov needs to be fortified if one is to have a chance to accomplish spiritually. To fill this niche, OHR SARAH was formed. Envisioned as a forum for post seminary students, to continue to flourish and grow, it has been set up as a once a month series of shiurim to be delivered by the most talented and dynamic mechanchim that exist today. We must present our daughters with the best educators available, if we want to motivate them to everything great in Yiddishkeit. OHR SARAH was founded l’iylui nishmas Sarah Azrikan. She was a BYA graduate, who left this world this year, on the third of Nissan, at the age of 18. Greatly loved by her friends and teachers, she brought tremendous nachas, joy and “light” to the lives of those who knew her. It is our hope and tefillah that the enjoyment and growth from the shiurim will be a source of aliyah for her neshama in Gan Eden. Tehay Zichrona Brucha. For the Shiurim schedule you can call 718-3381993. Anyone interested in supporting this project is urged to contribute to OHR SARAH. All contributions are tax deductible under section 501.3 A

From Soup to Nuts: Dairy Made Easy Triple-Tested Recipes for Every Day 2 Tbsp cream cheese 2 Tbsp shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese 1/2 tsp kosher salt pinch coarse black pepper 8-10 spring roll wrappers oil, for frying

Back to school: For kids it means homework, tests, deadlines and work. For us moms, it’s the pressure of coming up with delicious, nutritious dinners our children will enjoy. Who needs meat when you can enjoy bright and crave-worthy dairy dishes? Enjoy bistro-style pizzas and light refreshing salads. Relish restaurant-worthy pasta dishes and tantalizing desserts that could have come straight from a bakery showcase. Dairy Made Easy by Leah Schapira & Victoria Dwek (Artscroll), turns your kitchen into a favorite cafe your kids love to visit. Like all the books in the Made Easy series, Dairy Made Easy features a mouthwatering photo for every recipe, and includes simple recipes with clear and easy-to-follow instructions, using familiar ingredients.

Instructions 1. Chop broccoli very finely. Once thawed and chopped, the broccoli should yield 2 cups. 2. In a small bowl, combine broccoli, onions, cream cheese, shredded cheese, salt, and pepper. 3. Place a spring roll wrapper on your work surface. Place approximately 3 tablespoons filling across the center of the wrapper. Fold in the two sides, then fold the bottom half of the wrapper over the filling. Roll up to completely enclose. Use water to seal if necessary. Spring rolls can be frozen at this point.

BROCCOLI SPRING ROLLS YIELD 8-10 SPRING ROLLS Ingredients 4 cups frozen broccoli florets, completely thawed 1/2 cup finely diced onions 86 SUMMER 2014, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

4. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add spring rolls and fry until golden, about 3-4 minutes per side. Alternatively, spring rolls can be baked at 425째F for 18 minutes or until crispy. HOT ASIAN MUSHROOM SOUP YIELD 4 SERVINGS

mushrooms. 3. Prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together oil, sugar, garlic, salt, and mustard. Toss with salad. 4. Using a box grater, shred the feta cheese directly over the salad. AVOCADO AND BASIL PASTA SALAD YIELD 4 SERVINGS Ingredients 8 oz bow-tie pasta or macaroni 2 medium avocados, diced 2/3 cup loosely packed basil leaves, chopped OR 1/4 cup chopped fresh or frozen basil 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 Tbsp olive oil 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1/4 tsp kosher salt pinch coarse black pepper 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Instructions 1. Prepare pasta according to package directions. 2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine avocado, basil, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper. 3. Add hot pasta to bowl; stir to combine. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and serve at room temperature.

Ingredients 1 Tbsp oil 8 oz baby bella mushrooms, sliced 1 Tbsp teriyaki sauce 1 head Romaine lettuce, chopped 8-10 grape or cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced 1 1/2 oz feta cheese Dressing 2 Tbsp oil 1 Tbsp sugar 1 garlic clove, crushed pinch kosher salt 1/4 tsp mustard Instructions 1. Continued from page 38 When we identify what is the motivating force, we gain precious clarity that can be both a gift to ourselves as well our children. Once acknowledged, I imagine you might ask, “Now what? I have identified something from childhood. What do I do now?” The first step is to give yourself permission to feel whatever you are feeling. It can be scary or uncomfortable for some of us to even revisit painful memories or identify unmet needs, so kudos to you. These feelings are alive and well in what some refer to as your “inner child.” Your “inner child” needs something from you, the adult. He/she needs your unconditional love. He/she needs to know that though he/she did not get what he needed then, you will give it to your inner child now. Sometimes when we give our inner child validation of his needs and unconditional love, we lose our impulse to impose our unmet need onto our children. As the new school year approaches, parents have expectations of their children which is perfectly healthy and reasonable. As a matter of fact, we know that it is the combination of reasonable expectations and unconditional love that sets the atmosphere for a child to feel capable of success and accomplishments. When our expectations are rooted in our own unfinished business, we do not allow our children to become their authentic selves. If we are honest with ourselves, we all do it. We do it to our own children because we love them to pieces and don’t want them to experience some pain we ourselves have experienced, or because it was done to us and we don’t know how to do it any other way. So much of the work of parenting is about the work we do on ourselves. It is the hardest job in the world. With the school year looming and Rosh Hashanna right around the corner, I wish my readers contentment, enlightenment and the continued strength and humility to parent. Sincerely, Jennifer

Continued from page 12 happened that affected my sleeping pattern. The first is that my oldest grandchild - all of four - who lives in Israel, learned my cell phone number by heart and has taken to calling me when she wakes up in the morning before she leaves for school - about 8:30 am her time. About 1:30 am my time. The second situation is that my youngest grandchild - all of eight months old - gets dropped off at my house several times a week by 6:30 am so her mom can make it to work as a hospital nurse by 7 am. About two hours later I take her to the JCC in my neighborhood for their incredible day care program. At four-thirty in the afternoon I am back at “gan” picking her up and keeping her with me until her mom finishes that grueling twelve plus hour shift and comes to claim her somewhere between eight and eight-thirty at night. Now, don’t get me wrong. Nothing lights up my day (or, rather, night) more than having my phone ring minutes after I finally fall asleep than to hear my sweet granddaughter say “Hi Babie” and proceed to tell me all about her morning’s adventures. I get weather reports - “It’s shmoilling today!” I get sibling accounts - “My sister stuck a crayon in her nose.” I get menu updates - “Mommy’s sleeping and we’re eating chocolate chips for breakfast,” etc. And I am always kept up-to-date about the goings-on at her Jerusalem school. I have taken to charging my phone in the evening so I can leave it fully loaded on my night table when I go to sleep so as not to miss the opportunity to chat with her. And make no mistake. Having the bulk of my grandchildren living in Israel makes me greatly appreciate how lucky I am to be babysitting for their yummy cousin whenever I can. The day care program she attends is part of a wonderful pre-school in my neighborhood. As soon as we enter the cheerful building and she spots the holiday or seasonal decorations and hears the chatter and laughter of all the nursery children, she

With her black and pink personalized schoolbag slung over my shoulder I carry her through the hallways, both of us sporting big smiles on our faces as we are warmly greeted all along the way. Who could have know that decades after my own school days I would be back at school - both literally and figuratively - as I accompany my grandchildren on their school experiences? And although as I write this piece the school year is winding down, by the time you read it we’ll already be gearing up for the new fall semester. Whether your own children are still getting an academic education, your grandchildren are starting on their school journeys, or you, yourself have decided to sign up for an adult ed class or two, it seems someone in the family is always heading back-to-school. May it be a good year for all - big or small!
