My father was born without a sense of smell. Admittedly, probably the best of the five senses to be missing if one had to choose. But he did not have a choice and not having a sense of smell is a huge misfortune. To compensate for his lack of olfactory ability his visual senses stepped in and took over. How a food looks to my father determines whether he will even venture a taste of it. Since he doesn’t have the benefit of smell he isn’t about to dine on a dish without much visual appeal. We don’t appreciate how even subconsciously we rely on our sense of smell to choose consumables. He doesn’t have that option. While thankfully I did not inherit this odd deficit of his, and all my senses are in working order, I have a different disadvantage. I am greatly challenged by the vernacular. Today, for example, I walked into a local bagel shop to splurge on a multi-grain flat bagel. As I was waiting on the surprisingly, for once, short line, I

noticed the coffee kiosk behind me featuring two flavors of the day hand written in a flowery script Raspberry Truffle and Crumb Cake. Yum! They both sounded delicious. Had there been a long line behind me I would have undoubtedly stopped traffic and incurred the wrath of several shoppers there to satisfy their morning munchies. But since I was actually the last customer I had the luxury of standing, nearly paralyzed unmoving, but bothering no one - as I tried to come to a decision. Raspberry Truffle or Crumb Cake? Crumb Cake or Raspberry Truffle? “Miss,” gently prodded the Yankee-capped clerk behind the counter. “Anything else I can get you?” “Oh, just take the plunge,” I admonished myself. So I did. “I’ll have a large, iced decaf Raspberry Truffle, skim milk, one Splenda, please,” I ordered emphatically. I paid my bill, stuck a straw into the

I sat down in the driver’s seat, started the engine and took a long slurp of my iced cup-o-joe. And then I remembered. I hate coffee! I really, really dislike it - iced or otherwise. I took another sip and couldn’t help grimacing. Ich! Even with the very faint whiff of raspberry (and where was the truffle???), it still tasted like a cup of coffee. A very large cup of coffee. Hoodwinked again by inviting words, enticing labels and cutesy, curly handwriting. Simple marketing strategies at work. Raspberry Truffle. Yeah. Right.

And it’s not just coffee. Frozen yogurt does not agree with my stomach but when Toasted Coconut Dream is neatly printed on the flavor of the day sign I get snagged each and every time. And restaurants too. How many times have I ordered a food that I’ve never cared for because the inspired, almost poetic menu description literally made my mouth water? Too many. Did I say my senses were intact? Maybe not my sense of intelligence, my common sense. I like words and the magic you can create with

I’ll be working on my menus soon, perusing cookbooks, asking friends for recommendations and I refuse to get caught up in fancy phraseology. I’ve got to keep a clear head. Umm. Skewers of quail in honey, thyme and lavender (Is that for eating or bathing?) I must stay strong. Entertaining, especially on a Yom Tov, is about the people around your table not so much the dishes on top of it. Sure we want our guests to enjoy and for all the effort we want our food to taste good, but let’s keep our heads together and our priorities straight. By all means try something new, get a little imaginative. Just don’t get carried away. I’m definitely going to take my own advice this time. How hard can a mound of chocolate marquise with candied ginger be to make? Yum.

SEPTEMBER 2010, Esra
Many people think we, the frum community, are immune to bullying; however, there is much more bullying, exclusive grouping, and teasing than we realize in yeshivas today. Although we may not see many girls being physical with each other in school, we do see children picking mercilessly on others, which is also a form of bullying. Regarding boys, there has been a large increase in physical and verbal bullying in the past few years. I have numerous clients who suffer from other children’s taunting, and while we may say, “children will be children,” or “children can be cruel,” these children can ruin other kids’ lives. There continues to be a lot of opposition to the view that bullying is harmful to the health of children. Some of the resistance comes from people who proudly declare that being bullied at school never did them any harm and that they actually became stronger from it. What these people do not realize is that while they may be very strong and resilient people, others are not. There can be serious psychological ramifications for individuals who were taunted and publicly mocked as children. Although this is an extreme example, many of the students who were involved in school shootings claimed to be severely teased. That is not to say that every child who is teased will become a sociopath and hurt others, though every child that is teased will be affected to some extent and in various degrees depending on their resilience and coping skills. Some children will have acute emotional problems, whereas others might have some social scars. Research has shown that there is definitely a relationship between children being bullied often and having emotional problems when they get older. Olweus (1992) reported a correlation between frequent victimization in middle school and low self esteem and proneness to depression. Egan and Perry (1998) conducted a longitudinal study with elementary school children and reported that although bullying was experienced more often by children with low self-regard, victimization by peers induced a further loss of self-esteem. Some individuals, as noted above, may become stronger; however, this is a smaller percentage than people think. Because there are many risk factors to emotional distress and children have different levels of familial support and coping skills (two very

important protective factors), we should err on the side of caution and try to eliminate as many harmful outside aspects as possible. Bullying, cliques and teasing are all very harmful external causes for emotional suffering. Each new grade at school is supposed to be an exciting time. Teachers are preparing for a brand new year and are fresh from vacation, and children, as well as parents, are usually excited to begin the next level and to continue the process of growing up. But, what happens to those children who are made fun of day in and day out? How do you think
they feel? Perhaps worried, nervous, and maybe even frightened. While most of their counterparts are gearing up to start school, they are cringing at the thought of another year of being taunted and left out. Sometimes parents are aware of their child’s pain, though many times parents may have no idea as to how much their children are suffering. So, what can we do about it? Parents of the perpetrators of this offense and parents of the victims need to take a bigger role in helping their children socialize more appropriately.

Continued from page 43 Even parents whose children are not perpetrators or victims should take a stand. We need to go back to the basics: Middos. There is a lot of emphasis on learning for the boys and getting good grades for the girls, but what about who we trample on and hurt in the process? Middos should be everyone’s top priority. I say it is basic, because it is very simple: BE NICE. Children do not have to be cruel and we can teach them otherwise. It is helpful to start teaching children about niceness and good middos when they are very young. Young children are the

easiest to shape and mold and this is the time to begin teaching children to respect one another and do “good deeds” to one another. Of course, it goes without saying that kindness should be taught at home; however, schools need to take a greater responsibility as well. Teachers of pre-K, 1st grade and 2nd grade can implement games or contests to promote and encourage good middos and kindness in the classroom. One idea would be to fill up a jar with marbles for every nice thing a child does. Once the jar is filled, the class can get a pizza party or an ice
cream party. This encourages children to be nice and by default discourages teasing and cruelty. This also helps augment students’ self-esteem, something integral to every child. It would not be wise to punish children if they are caught taunting because children usually tease others because they feel bad about themselves. Thus, punishing children will only make children feel worse and cause more taunting. However, teasing should not be ignored. Teachers can take a child aside privately, during recess or after class, and talk about the child’s positive attributes. Then the teacher can say something like, “I would not expect such a special
student like you to say something like that.” Afterwards, make sure to praise the child when he/she is kind to others, try to notice even small gestures of kindness. Like this, the child will want to improve and be kind to others. Who doesn’t want to be praised and told that they are special? Teachers have such an important role in helping children develop, both academically and emotionally. Students will often remember the one teacher who made them feel extra special, or sadly, the one teacher that made their life miserable. So

Continued from page 45 ask yourself, do you want to make an impression on a child that will improve their life or do you want to help raise a generation of children who are selfish and cruel? Remember, we all can make a difference. This year, when your children are planning for their first day of school, bear in mind that yes, it is important for them to have all their supplies and paraphernalia, but it is more important for them to go into that first day of school with some strong social skills. If your child tends to leave others out and make others feel bad, work with them on

including and complimenting others. If your child is a victim of taunting, work with them on smart answers and good social skills. In either case, professional help may be helpful and sometimes warranted. Even if your child does not fall into either of the above categories, teach your children to respect others and be nice to others. Children who have leadership ability can influence others to stop teasing and leaving out certain children. So, this year buy your children pens and notebooks, but also buy them a year of happiness and positive selfgrowth!

It’s time for the holiday celebrations. We know what you’re thinking. What’s to celebrate when Uncle Arnold spills wine (red of course) on the white carpet, and Aunt Hanna’s two darlings wiped the icing off their hands (white of
course) on the red couch, and you find a schmaltz stain from chopped liver on the brocade chairs? What you can celebrate is Fiber-Seal. Invite us to your home before the holidays and Fiber-Seal can protect any fabricfurnishing, any carpet in
your home. And it’s backed by a 12 month service policy. So call Fiber-Seal and don’t cry over spilt borscht.

HAPPENINGS Avigdor’s Helping Hand was formed by the family and friends of Avigdor Glaser, Z”L, after his untimely Petira at the age of 30.
In the past four years, since its inception, Avigdor’s Helping Hand has given $1.9 Million to 85 families who have recently suffered the loss of a primary wage earner and to 275 Chassanim and Kallas, who, after tragically losing a parent, needed financial assistance to help make their weddings. The goal is to soften their difficult situations as much as possible. Unfortunately, we hear of too many young people passing away with the husband/wife and children left with the loss of their loving parent and/or spouse in addition to finding themselves in a precarious financial situation. Avigdor’s Helping Hand was formed with one overall question in mind: how can we ease the pain and suffering of these families? It is with this goal that Avigdor’s Helping Hand has set off on a mission to provide immediate, emergency financial relief to families who have sustained the loss of their primary wage earner. In addition, Avigdor’s Helping Hand has embarked on a mission of making the wedding day for orphans as special as it should be. Should a child who no longer has a father or mother suffer the additional pain of not being able to afford walking down the aisle? Avigdor’s Helping Hand addresses this by providing funds to qualified orphans, thereby helping to relieve the unfortunate stress that can disrupt their happy occasion. Avigdor’s Helping Hand, is a Tzedaka like no other. It proudly operates with NO EXPENSES, NO OFFICE STAFF and NO OVERHEAD, and instead is operated day-to-day by over 25 volunteers who give of themselves totally for the Mitzvah of helping our fellow Yiden. On Sunday, September 5, 2010, Labor Day Weekend, Avigdor’s Helping Hand will hold its Fifth Annual BBQ at the Moradi residence – 72 Muriel Avenue, Lawrence. In the past, Baruch Hashem, this event has been a resounding success, with all participants

enjoying great food by Michael Schick Catering in wonderful surroundings. We urge our friends and neighbors to join us and support this important and vital source of financial assistance for widow(er)s and orphans in our communities after a tragedy unexpectedly occurs, RL. If you know anyone who can use our assistance and/or if you are able to help, please call us at 718-568-9720 or visit us at www.avigdorshelpinghand.org. Thank you and Tizku Lemitzvos.

From Soup to Nuts: The Book Of Jewish Food In more than 800 glorious recipes interwoven with stories, reminiscences, and history, Claudia Roden traces the fascinating development of Jewish cooking over the centuries, in The Book of Jewish Food (Knopf). The recipes-many of them never before documented - are the treasures garnered by the author during almost fifteen years of traveling around the world, tasting, watching, collecting recipes, talking to cooks and food sellers, and gathering the stories that spice this remarkable book. Beginning with a loving recollection of her childhood in Egypt and the food of the Jewish quarter of Cairo, Claudia Roden takes us on a journey through the entire Jewish Diaspora, from the inventive cooking of Ashkenazi Jews in Russia and Poland, Germany, England, France, and, of course, America, to the sensuous and colorful food of the Sephardim throughout the Orient, in Syria and Morocco, India and China, Bukhara, Greece, and Israel. Here are some of the delights she offers us, representing the many ways Jews are cooking today: PLUM SOUP SERVES
6
This Eastern European soup can be sharp or sweet. Add the sugar to taste, starting with 1 or 2 tablespoons. Apricots, gooseberries, and apples can also be used in the same way. 2 lbs plums, pitted 9 cups water or 1/2-and-1/2 mixture of water and fruity white wine Juice of 1 lemon Grated zest of 1 lemon
90
SEPTEMBER 2010, Esra
1 cinnamon stick Sugar to taste, from 2 tablespoons to 3/4 cup 6 boiled potatoes (optional) 1 cup sour cream Wash the plums and remove the stones. Put them in a pan with the water or a mixture of wine and water. Add the lemon juice and zest, cinnamon, and 1-2 tablespoons sugar, and simmer 15 minutes, or till soft. Remove the lemon peel and cinnamon. Taste before adding more sugar. Serve hot with potatoes or cold with sour cream. Beat in the sour cream before serving, or pass it around for all to help themselves. VARIATIONS • Blend to a puree and serve hot with boiled potatoes or cold with sour cream. POTRAVKA Chicken with Wild Mushrooms SERVES
4
Mushroom hunting was a favorite pastime in Russia. This simple and delicious dish is one of the legacies. 1 chicken, quartered, or 2 Cornish hens cut in pieces 4 tablespoons light vegetable oil 1 lb wild mushrooms or shiitake, sliced or quartered 1 1/4 cups dry white wine Salt and pepper 3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley In a large casserole, brown the chicken or Cornish hens all over in the oil and remove the pieces. Then saute the mushrooms briefly in the same oil. Add the wine, salt, and pepper and return the chicken or Cornish hens to the pan. Simmer for about 30 minutes, or until tender, adding a little water if necessary. Serve hot, sprinkled with parsley.

In Egypt this salad was served for Rosh Hashanah, the New Year. It represented new life and fecundity. 1 lb black-eyed peas, soaked for 1 hour Salt 1 mild red onion, chopped, or 2 garlic cloves, minced or crushed in a press 4 tablespoons chopped flat-leafed parsley Black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cumin (optional) 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Juice of 1 lemon Boil the drained peas for about 20 minutes, or until tender, adding salt towards the end. Drain, then add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. VARIATION • A similar salad is made using brown or green lentils. BOULETTES DE POISSON á la SAUCE TOMATE Fish Balls in Tomato Sauce SERVES 4 All the Oriental communities make fish balls or fingers in various kinds of sauces, tomato being the most common. In Egypt we called them “blehat.” Because they are round and contain fish, their symbolism made them a New Year's dish. I prefer this Moroccan version to ours. It can be served with couscous or rice, or cold with bread.

Make the sauce first. In a wide pan, fry the garlic in oil till the aroma rises. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, and chili pepper or cayenne. Add about 2 cups of water and bring to the boil. If you leave the chili pepper in throughout the cooking, the sauce might end up too hot for you, so taste the sauce and remove the pepper when you feel the sauce is hot enough. For the fish balls, mix all the ingredients together and work to a firm paste with your hands. (If you use the food processor to grind the fish, do so very briefly or it can turn into a creamy puree.) Take lumps of paste the size of a small walnut and roll into little balls. Drop them one by one into the sauce and simmer for 20-25 minutes, turning them over once. Serve accompanied by lemon wedges.

Delectable Desserts
Out With The Old…In With The New by Rivky Eisenberg of The Viennese Table
Part 2 September is a month of new beginnings. Children (and adults) are starting school with new shoes, briefcases, fresh pencils and notebooks. Although it’s been a long time for me, I can almost smell the newness. Rosh Hashana brings its own excitement - with our hopes, and dreams for a happy, healthy, & sweet New Year. Desserts, likewise, can be classified as having a new beginning. Take the traditional 4-layer devil’s food cake featured in last month’s issue. That is old goodness, which when taken to the next level, creates this new sophisticated and decadent dessert: a parfaitlike treat of cake, mousse, and chocolate sauce topped with crunchy, salty cocoa nib streusel. Heavenly! THE NEW……….DEVIL’S FOOD CAKE VERRINE This deconstructed take on devil’s food cake gets its name from a French dish where various components are layered in a glass (verre is the French word for glass). Here, those components are a dense chocolate cake, creamy chocolate mousse, a rich chocolate sauce, and a crunchy, salty cocoa nib streusel. Serves twelve. For the Cake: 4 oz. (1/2 cup) unsalted butter; more for the pan 1 cup cake flour 1 cup plus 2 Tbs. granulated sugar 2/3 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. table salt

SEPTEMBER 2010, Esra
For the Mousse: 3 oz. bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped 3 oz. milk chocolate, coarsely chopped 2 large egg yolks 1/2 Tbs. honey, or light corn syrup 2 large egg whites 3/4 cup heavy cream For the Streusel 6 oz. (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 cup plus 2 Tbs. unbleached all-purpose flour 3/4 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder 1/3 cup cocoa nibs (available in some health food stores) 3/4 tsp. fine sea salt For the Sauce 8 oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 2/3 cup heavy cream 2 Tbs. light corn syrup Pinch kosher salt 2 Tbs. dark rum Make the Cake Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 325°F. Butter an 8x8x2inch square cake pan, line the bottom with parchment, and butter the parchment. Sift the cake flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt onto a piece of parchment. In a small saucepan, combine the butter and the coffee over medium heat to melt the butter. Transfer to a medium bowl. Whisk in the buttermilk, egg, and yolk and then the flour mixture until incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan

Continued from page 116 and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30-40 minutes. Cool on a rack for 15 minutes. Invert onto the rack, remove the parchment, and cool completely. Make the Mousse Melt the bittersweet and milk chocolates (use all semisweet or bittersweet if making it parve) in a medium heatproof bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Set aside. In another medium bowl, whisk the yolks and the honey/syrup. Temper the eggs by adding a bit of warm chocolate to the yolks. Then add the yolks to the chocolate. With an electric hand mixer on medium speed, whip the egg whites in a medium bowl until stiff peaks form, 1 to 2 minutes. With the mixer on medium-high speed, whip the cream in another medium bowl until soft peaks form. Whisk a spoonful of the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture. With a rubber spatula fold in the remaining whipped cream and then the egg whites. Refrigerate. (The mousse can be made up to 4 hours ahead. If you leave it longer, it will be just as delicious but the texture will be less creamy.) Make the Streusel In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. Reduce the speed to low and add the vanilla. In a medium bowl, stir the flour and cocoa powder. With the mixer running on low speed, add the flour mixture in three increments, including the cocoa nibs and salt with the final addition. Mix until the dough comes together. (The dough can be refrigerated for a week or frozen for up to 2 months.) Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment and press the dough into the pan in a 1/4-inch-thick layer. Bake at 325°F for 8 minutes and then rake 118 SEPTEMBER 2010, Esra
with a fork to break into medium clumps. Bake for 7 minutes more and rake again to create small pieces. The streusel will look sandy and will crisp as it cools. (The streusel can be made 1 day ahead.) Make the Sauce Put the chocolate in a medium bowl. Put the cream, syrup, salt, and 1/4 cup water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from the heat, pour over the chocolate, and stir to melt. Assemble Divide the warm chocolate sauce among twelve 8-oz. glasses. Cut the cake into 1-inch cubes and put 4 in each glass. Drizzle 1/2 tsp. of the rum on the cake cubes. Scoop a spoonful or a quenelle** of mousse into each glass. Sprinkle about 2 Tbs. of streusel on top of the mousse, and serve. Make Ahead Tips The cake can be baked 1 day ahead. The streusel dough can be refrigerated for a week or frozen, and baked up to 1 day ahead. The mousse can be made up to 4 hours ahead. *you can make your own buttermilk by putting a tablespoon of vinegar in a cup and then adding milk or parve/soy milk to make 1 cup. **A quenelle is an oval shaped scoop. To create a quenelle, you’ll need two spoons of the same size. The size of the spoon will determine the size of your quenelle. With a spoon in each hand, scoop a generous amount of mousse into one spoon. Gently press the bowl of the second spoon against the mousse, scooping the contents from the first spoon into the second. Transfer the mousse back to the first spoon in the same manner. This begins to create a smooth, rounded surface where the mousse molded to the spoon. Keep scooping back and forth until you have a nice, smooth oval shape. A Privet Moment by Gila Glikman-Labell Privet
As Rosh Hashana quickly approaches we will all become busy with Yom Tov preparations. Preparing ourselves both spiritually and physically; shopping, cooking, setting up our homes for our guests, and of course readying ourselves for the Tefillot. While all aforementioned are probably what worry women most about the holidays, as a florist my table centerpiece is one of the first things that comes to my mind when thinking of the Yom Tov. I am constantly thinking of new, innovative, creative, and of course these days, wallet friendly ideas. Starting with a central color scheme that works throughout your entire home is key. You can always stretch your flowers by mixing them with

garden greens. There is always something blooming outside that can be worked into the mix. Introduce the color with an arrangement in the front hall and work that color throughout the house. Place three vases of different heights on a console in your front hall. Sticking to one color, fill each vase with a different type of flower, for example, fill one vase with pink roses, the second with pink carnations, and the third with pink hydrangeas. This look is always simple, clean, classy, and beautiful, I like to call it “flower shop style. Selecting a look or style for your dining room table should be next; your options are practically endless. The dining room table is the center of the house for the Yom Tov season so make that arrangement extra special. One of my favorite approaches is to mix in fruit of the season. Use fruit that have a special significance on Yom Tov. Apples and pomegranates are beautiful mixed with flowers in shades of reds, wines, magentas, and greens. It is not always necessary to have one large arrangement in the center of the table, perhaps this year mix it up a bit by sporadically placing fruit down the center of your table and incorporating small arrangements or even several bud vases of a single flower in those same colors.
That would make a beautiful tablescape that would definitely not break the bank. A lighter, airier alternative would be to go with whites and greens for the holidays, always a safe, and classic look. Surprisingly and definitely reasonable, Baby’s Breath (yes, the cheap filler that most people say they don’t like) creates a fantastic and dramatic look when done in large quantities. In low vases, high vases, whatever look you do choose, Baby’s Breath is a great alternative that can be extremely impressive. A flower or two in a bud vase can be enough to
pull the color scheme through less important spaces. It is always a beautiful gesture to have fresh flowers in a guest bedroom. Fragrant flowers are always nice, such as freesia and garden roses. They give off a beautiful scent but are not too overwhelming. Flowers instantly add color, style, and of course happiness to any space. So think ahead and be creative, and of course don’t forget to place your orders because Yom Tov is the perfect time to send flowers to all of the important people in your life!

GRIN AND BARE IT Your cabinets are filled with a plethora of serving dishes and platters but there’s that one piece you love the most. Which is it and why?
Why is This Bride Not Smiling?
That’s easy! My glass silver overlay platter that I purchased at the Antiquefull Home. Every time I use it I get a million compliments. My advice is that every one should own at least one magnificent platter. E.S. I was given a wonderful blue bowl by our friends. It’s asymmetric and two toned. And beautiful. Especially since blue is my favorite color. S.W. The silver bread basket my friends chipped in for to buy me for my 25th anniversary. I absolutely love it! T.B The one that cooks, cleans, serves, washes and puts itself away. R.D. My soup mug. When I was in Israel I joined my grandson at one of those places where you paint plaster items and then you go back to get it after they put them in a kiln. I ended up painting a soup mug. I came back before it was ready and had to wait till the next family member going could bring it back. It’s great for my soup, salad, cholent, vegetables etc. E.W. I love a beautiful Annie Glass tray that I received as a gift last year. It’s the perfect size to serve any main course; it washes easily, stores easily and looks elegant in its simplicity. The perfect gift. D.R. My favorite serving piece is a very cool hammered metal tray on legs with three matching little dishes on top. I love it so much I never used it! I tend to save things which sounds ridiculous even as I write this. Next time I have company I’m pulling it out! R.S. I guess I’m fickle--I don’t have a favorite. I choose the serving dish based on the overall style of the table setting and the type and color of the food it’ll hold. R.B. A beautiful glass dish with a glass cover that my daughters bought me on Mother’s Day when they

perfect size for mayo and horseradish. So whatever my guest’s taste I can satisfy everyone and add beauty to my shabbos or yom tov table. M.S.
One of my favorite serving pieces is a glass handpainted Challah tray that we received as a gift from a cousin visiting from Israel. I love Shabbos, I love Israel and I love making Challah - and the tray brings it all together! H.R.
Oh my gosh! Too many to mention. My daughter and niece have made me some great ones at the art studios in town and in camp. These I love and will never part with them! C.B.

bought for me as a present a few years ago. I cherish it and I smile every time I look at it thinking of the fact that my children got me this perfect gift! S.M. I would like to say that I have one from Germany that my grandmother used to serve her plattentorte on, but that would be false, because I don’t have it! Therefore, I’d have to say that my mom got me 4 green glass serving pieces in different sizes and shapes and I love them and use them constantly. Thanks Mom! Now I only need one to fit a plattentorte...... L.E.
It’s hard to choose, but I have this crystal platter with an etched fruit design in the middle, which I received as an engagement gift all those years ago and have always been partial to. I.M. An antique glass small cookie plate that has a sterling design on the bottom of the plate, visible through the glass and has delicate glass handles on the side. I don’t even know why??? It just appeals to me. L.M.W.

Removing the Focus on Disabilities and Focusing on Abilities: The IVDU Upper School Students Go to Work The IVDU Upper School, located in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, is a prevocational high school that prepares students, with a broad range of disabilities, to transition into young adulthood by maximizing their strengths and preparing them for the world of work ahead of them. The school has separate boys and girls divisions serving students ages 13-21. Students attending IVDU come from the five boroughs of New York (with transportation provided). Through academic instruction, social & life skills building classes, and vocational training, this school emphasizes the skills needed to help its students live more independent lives. In addition to daily High School academic instruction, IVDU students participate in a specialized vocational training enrichment program. Teaching special needs students the necessary vocational skills such as resume building, appropriate dress and behavioral expectations, how to appropriately handle a work problem, communicating with a boss and peers, and job specific tasks, gives them the opportunity to become productive and valued members of the workforce and more importantly contributing members of society. As part of the educational vocational training program, each student receives both small group and individualized lessons. In addition, a developmentally appropriate job placement in the community is made with a trained job coach that reinforces the vocational lessons. IVDU students “go to work at their assigned community job placement, which include museums, hospitals, offices, stores, and more. The 152 SEPTEMBER 2010, Esra
maturity, responsibility, and satisfaction gained from being able to hold a job is a lifelong tool. Another wonderful benefit of the program; through job placements students begin to build their resume, so upon graduation they are already more employable then many others in their position. In addition to community based vocational experiences, IVDU students also began their own student run business. They make and sell simcha bags that are used at a bar mitzvah, aufruf, pidyon haben, and birthday party. Additionally, the students of IVDU make beautiful mishloach manos packages. Utilizing various concepts they learned in their math classes, they price items, collect money and offer the correct change. They also learn appropriate interpersonal skills, the importance of making eye contact with others, and speaking slowly and clearly to allow people to understand them well. The students apply the money raised towards supplementing field trips. In addition to academic and vocational classes, IVDU’s mission is to provide the core social and life skills needed by the students to achieve their highest potential and develop into productive citizens in their communities. Teaching social skills lessons provide the students with the most vital tools needed to facilitate interaction with the world around them. Teaching special needs individuals basic communication skills, listening skills, decision making skills, self control (anger management), hygiene, nutrition, travel training and personal safety will aid them in living and functioning as independently and inclusively as possible in the world. Classes focus on role playing, content based guided reading, and applying skills learned in the context of the real world so that students learn and understand appropriate behavior in different settings. Learning social skills will help them form and develop friendships and engage in appropriate interactions with peers and future workforce colleagues.
Equally important to academic classes is learning the core basic skills needed to successfully navigate society at large. IVDU students have mainstream activities with local Yeshivas. These special times include learning, holiday activities and weekly lunch-time get together; and help to reinforce those vital social skills taught in the classroom. Building each student’s self-esteem and skill set is essential to helping students participate in the community with ability and confidence. This is achieved through student’s hard work and the dedicated efforts of a wonderful staff. Anyone interested in supporting IVDU students by offering them a job in exchange for a conscientious and highly motivated worker (free of charge!), contact: (718) 3727203. If you would like to find out more about a placement in the IVDU School for your child, please contact (212) 613-8397 or (718 ) 372-7203.
